This article provides a review of the literature on rigorous definitions and constructions in Quantum Field Theory, spanning the period of seven decades. Comparing with the ideas and constructions found in the modern physics literature, we conclude that none of the existing systems of QFT axioms can cover all the physical situations. Therefore, it is still an outstanding open problem to formulate a complete definition of QFT. We argue that the question is of relevance for both physicists and mathematicians.
We attempt to give a broad conceptual overview of modern quantum field theory, highlighting important recent developments. This report serves as the TF03 topical group summary for Snowmass 2021.
Strongly-coupled Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) are ubiquitous in high energy physics and many-body physics, yet our ability to do precise computations in such systems remains limited. Hamiltonian Truncation is a method for doing nonperturbative computations of real-time evolution in strongly coupled QFT in the continuum limit, and works by numerically solving the Schrodinger equation in a truncated subspace of the full Hilbert space. Recent advances in understanding this method have opened the door to progress in a range of applications, from gauge theories in $d\ge 2$ dimensions to relativist…
We present a summary of recent progress and remaining challenges in applying the methods and ideas of quantum information theory to the study of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. Important topics and themes include: entanglement entropy in QFTs and what it reveals about RG flows, symmetries, and phases; scrambling, information spreading, and chaos; state preparation and complexity; classical and quantum simulation of QFTs; and the role of information in holographic dualities. We also highlight the ways in which quantum information science benefits from the synergy between the fields.
Higher Spin Gravity refers to extensions of gravity including at least one field of spin greater than two. These extensions are expected to provide manageable models of quantum gravity thanks to the infinite-dimensional (higher spin) gauge symmetry constraining them. One of the key aspects of Higher Spin Gravity/Symmetry is the range and diversity of topics it embraces: (a) higher spin fields play a role in quantum gravity, AdS/CFT, string theory and are expected to have important consequences in cosmology and black hole physics; (b) higher spin symmetry finds applications in Conformal Field T…
We review recent developments and outstanding questions regarding connecting the top-down UV complete physical framework of string theory with the observed physics of the Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model physics, emphasizing the global nonperturbative framework of F-theory and general lessons from UV physics. This paper, prepared for the TF01 conveners of the Snowmass 2022 process, provides a brief synopsis of this important area, focusing on ongoing developments and opportunities.
We provide further analytical and first numerical results on the solvable $λϕ^4_4$-NCQFT model. We prove that for $λ<0$ the singular integral equation has a unique solution, whereas for $λ>0$ there is considerable freedom. Furthermore we provide integral formulae for partial derivatives of the matrix 2-point function, which are the key to investigate reflection positivity. The numerical implementation of these equations gives evidence for phase transitions. The derivative of the finite wavefunction renormalisation with respect to $λ$ is discontinuous at $λ_c \approx -0.39$. This leads to singu…
We present a brief overview of Moonshine with an emphasis on connections to physics. Moonshine collectively refers to a set of phenomena connecting group theory, analytic number theory, and vertex operator algebras or conformal field theories. Modern incarnations of Moonshine arise in various BPS observables in string theory and, via dualities, invariants in enumerative geometry. We survey old and new developments, and highlight some of the many open questions that remain.
We summarize current and future applications of quantum information science to theoretical high energy physics. Three main themes are identified and discussed; quantum simulation, quantum sensors and formal aspects of the connection between quantum information and gravity. Within these themes, there are important research questions and opportunities to address them in the years and decades ahead. Efforts in developing a diverse quantum workforce are also discussed. This work summarizes the subtopical area Quantum Information for High Energy Physics TF10 which forms part of the Theory Frontier …
Small fluctuations around homogeneous and isotropic expanding backgrounds are the main object of study in cosmology. Their origin and evolution is sensitive to the physical processes that happen during inflation and in the late Universe. As such, they hold the key to answering many of the major open questions in cosmology. Given a large separation of relevant scales in many examples of interest, the most natural description of these fluctuations is formulated in terms of effective field theories. This was the main avenue for many of the important modern developments in theoretical cosmology, w…
Following the seminal works of Asorey-Ibort-Marmo and Muñoz-Castañeda-Asorey about selfadjoint extensions and quantum fields in bounded domains, we compute all the heat kernel coefficients for any strongly consistent selfadjoint extension of the Laplace operator over the finite line $[0,L]$. The derivative of the corresponding spectral zeta function at $s=0$ (partition function of the corresponding quantum field theory) is obtained. In order to compute the correct expression for the $a_{1/2}$ heat kernel coefficient, it is necessary to know in detail which non-negative selfadjoint extensions h…
Black holes provide a window into the microscopic structure of spacetime in quantum gravity. Recently the quantum information contained in Hawking radiation has been calculated, verifying a key aspect of the consistency of black hole evaporation with quantum mechanical unitarity. This calculation relied crucially on recent progress in understanding the emergence of bulk spacetime from a boundary holographic description. Spacetime wormholes have played an important role in understanding the underpinnings of this result, and the precision study of such wormholes, in this and other contexts, has …
In relativistic Quantum Field Theory (QFT) ideal measurements of certain observables are physically impossible without violating causality. This prompts two questions: i) can a given observable be ideally measured in QFT, and ii) if not, in what sense can it be measured? Here we formulate a necessary and sufficient condition that any measurement, and more generally any state update (quantum operation), must satisfy to respect causality in real scalar QFT. We argue that for unitary `kicks' and operations involving 1-parameter families of Kraus operators, e.g. Gaussian measurements, the only cau…
In this article and a companion paper we address the question of how one might obtain the semiclassical limit of ordinary matter quantum fields (QFT) propagating on curved spacetimes (CST) from full fledged Quantum General Relativity (QGR), starting from first principles. We stress that we do not claim to have a satisfactory answer to this question, rather our intention is to ignite a discussion by displaying the problems that have to be solved when carrying out such a program. In the present paper we propose a scheme that one might follow in order to arrive at such a limit. We discuss the tec…
Hamiltonian Renormalisation, as defined within this series of works, was derived from covariant Wilson renormalisation via Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction. As such it directly applies to QFT with a true (physical) Hamiltonian bounded from below. The validity of the scheme was positively tested for free QFT in any dimension with or without Abelian gauge symmetries of Yang-Mills type. The aim of this Hamiltonian renormalisation scheme is to remove quantisation ambiguities of Hamiltonians in interacting QFT that remain even after UV and IR regulators are removed as it happens in highly non-li…
There has been a recent interest in considering Quantum Field Theories in which Lorentz Invariance is broken in the UV sector. However attention has been mostly limited to dispersive theories. In this work we provide the generalized settings for studying dissipation. Unitarity is preserved by coupling the original fields to additional (heavy) fields which induce the dissipation. Starting with Lagrangians breaking LI in the UV, we learn that dissipative effects unavoidably develop in the effective theory. We then covariantize these Lagrangians in order to address the trans-Planckian question of…
Can we reduce Quantum Field Theory (QFT) to a quantum computation? Can physics be simulated by a quantum computer? Do we believe that a quantum field is ultimately made of a numerable set of quantum systems that are unitarily interacting? A positive answer to these questions corresponds to substituting QFT with a theory of quantum cellular automata (QCA), and the present work is examining this hypothesis. These investigations are part of a large research program on a "quantum-digitalization" of physics, with Quantum Theory as a special theory of information, and Physics as emergent from the sa…
The search for a relation among GR, QFT and TFT is the toughest challenge of theoretical physics since Hawking's discovery. The emergence of a temperature in spacetimes with an event horizon has unveiled the existence of a fertile territory, where gravity, thermal and quantum effects are non-trivially connected. Although black holes are the best arena to explore this interplay, evidences for their existence are lacking, suggesting to address less exotic contexts. In this sense, a promising stage is the QFT in curved space: specifically, the Unruh effect (UE) provides the first step toward unif…
Scattering amplitudes are both a wonderful playground to discover novel ideas in Quantum Field Theory and simultaneously of immense phenomenological importance to make precision predictions for e.g.~particle collider observables and more recently also for gravitational wave signals. In this review chapter, we give an overview of some of the exciting recent progress on reformulating QFT in terms of mathematical, geometric quantities, such as polytopes, associahedra, Grassmanians, and the amplituhedron. In this novel approach, standard notions of locality and unitarity are derived concepts rathe…
