We report the crystal structure, charge-density-wave (CDW), superconductivity (SC), and ferromagnetism (FM) in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 chalcogenides. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) results reveal that CuIr2-xCrxTe4 series are distinguished between two structural types and three different regions: (i) layered trigonal structure region, (ii) mixed phase regions, (iii) spinel structure region. Besides, Cr substitution for Ir site results in rich physical properties including the collapse of CDW, the formation of dome-shaped like SC, and the emergence of magnetism. Cr doping slightly elevates the superconducting critical temperature (Tsc) to its highest Tsc = 2.9 K around x = 0.06. As x increases from 0.3 to 0.4, the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) increases from 175 to 260 K. However, the Tc remains unchanged in the spinel range from 1.9 to 2. This finding provides a comprehensive material platform for investigating the interplay between CDW, SC, and FM multipartite quantum states.
PbO-type Fe chalcogenide has been drawing much attention as the Fe-based superconductor with the most simple crystal structure. Whereas FeSe is an intrinsic superconductor, FeTe, while having a structure analogous to FeSe, exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity provides key information to understand better superconductivity in Fe chalcogenides. Furthermore the significant pressure effect on Tc in the Fe-chalcogenide superconductors, which is likely to be correlated with the crystal structure and/or magnetism, is important in eluci…
We discovered a novel annealing method for Fe-chalcogenide superconductors. It was found that sulfur annealing deintercalated excess Fe via formation of FeS2. Due to its specifics, sulfur annealing is applicable when preparing Fe-chalcogenide-based wires or cables.
Layered transition-metal chalcogenides (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ were screened out from database of Atomwork as a candidate for pressure-induced superconductivity due to their narrow band gap and high density of state near the Fermi level. The (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ samples were synthesized in single crystal and then the compositional ratio, crystal structures, and valence states were investigated via energy dispersive spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The pressure-induced superconductivity in both crystals were first time reported by using …
Superconductivity develops in metals upon the formation of a coherent macroscopic quantum state of electron pairs. Iron pnictides and chalcogenides are materials that have high superconducting transition temperatures. In this Review, we describe the advances in the field that have led to higher superconducting transition temperatures in iron-based superconductors and the wide range of materials that form them. We summarize both the essential aspects of the normal state and the mechanism for superconductivity. We emphasize the degree of electron-electron correlations and their manifestation in …
We present the first direct evidence for two-band superconductivity in the quasi-one dimensional chalcogenide Nb$_{2}$Pd$_{0.81}$S$_{5}$. Soft point contact spectroscopic measurements reveal Andreev reflection in the differential conductance $G$ in the zero-resistance superconducting (SC) state below $T_c$(=6.6~K). Multiple peaks in $G$ were clearly observed at 1.8~K and were successfully explained by the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with two gaps $Δ_{1}=0.48$~meV and $Δ_{2}=1.05$~meV. Their evolution in temperature and magnetic field is consistent with the conventional BCS theory. …
Pressure plays an essential role in the induction1 and control2,3 of superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Substitution of a smaller rare-earth ion for the bigger one to simulate the pressure effects has surprisingly raised the superconducting transition temperature Tc to the record high 55 K in these materials4,5. However, Tc always goes down after passing through a maximum at some pressure and the superconductivity eventually tends to disappear at sufficiently high pressures1-3. Here we show that the superconductivity can reemerge with a much higher Tc after its destruction upon c…
The interplay among topology, superconductivity, and magnetism promises to bring a plethora of exotic and unintuitive behaviors in emergent quantum materials. The family of Fe-chalcogenide superconductors FeTexSe1-x are directly relevant in this context due to their intrinsic topological band structure, high-temperature superconductivity, and unconventional pairing symmetry. Despite enormous promise and expectation, the local magnetic properties of FeTexSe1-x remain largely unexplored, which prevents a comprehensive understanding of their underlying material properties. Exploiting nitrogen vac…
The highly conductive two-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface between insulating SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$ shows low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism. The Rashba spin-orbit interaction with in-plane Zeeman field of the system favors $p_x \pm i p_y$-wave superconductivity at finite momentum. Owing to the intrinsic disorder at the interface, the role of spatial inhomogeneity on the superconducting and ferromagnetic states becomes important. We find that for strong disorder, the system breaks up into mutually excluded regions of superconductivi…
The coexistence of a homogeneous (Meissner-like) phase of spin-triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism is investigated within the framework of a phenomenological model of spin-triplet ferromagnetic superconductors. The results are discussed in view of application to metallic ferromagnets as UGe$_2$, ZrZn$_2$, URhGe, and Fe.
We present the results of a study of the vortex lattice (VL) of the nickel chalcogenide superconductor TlNi2Se2, using small angle neutron scattering. This superconductor has the same crystal symmetry as the iron arsenide materials. Previous work points to it being a two-gap superconductor, with an unknown pairing mechanism. No structural transitions in the vortex lattice are seen in the phase diagram, arguing against d-wave gap symmetry. Empirical fits of the temperature-dependence of the form factor and penetration depth rule out a simple s-wave model, supporting the presence of nodes in the…
Recent reports of the detecting of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in ruthenium-cuprates have aroused great interest. Unfortunately, whether the two antagonistic phenomena coexist in the same space in the compounds remains unresolved. By employing the magneto-optical-imaging technique, ferromagnetism and superconductivity were indeed directly observed to coexist in the same space in RuSr2(Gd0.7Ce0.3)2Cu2O10 within the experimental resolution of ~ 10 (mu)m. The observation sets a length scale limit for models proposed to account for the competition between ferromagnetism and superconductiv…
We demonstrate that the differential conductance, $dI/dV$, measured via spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy in the doped iron chalcogenide FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$, possesses a series of characteristic features that allow one to extract the orbital structure of the superconducting gaps. This yields nearly isotropic superconducting gaps on the two hole-like Fermi surfaces, and a strongly anisotropic gap on the electron-like Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the pinning of nematic fluctuations by defects can give rise to a dumbbell-like spatial structure of the induced impuri…
We show the observation of the coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2(x = 0 - 1.0) prepared by annealing under high-pressure. In CeO1-xFxBiS2 system, both superconductivity and two types of ferromagnetism with respective magnetic transition temperatures of 4.5 K and 7.5 K are induced upon systematic F substitution. This fact suggests that carriers generated by the substitution of O by F are supplied to not only the BiS2 superconducting layers but also the CeO blocking layers. Furthermore, the highest superconducting transition temperature is observed when the …
We study an SO(5) model unifying p-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism. If only a single p-wave pairing wavefunction is involved, the p-wave superconducting (pSC) and ferromagnetic (F) states can be unified to form 10-dimensional multiplet of SO(5). The collective modes in pSC and F states are studied from this viewpoint in terms of a non-linear sigma model.
The unique electronic and crystal structures driven by external pressure in transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) can host emergent quantum states. Here we report pressure-induced metallization, nontrivial $Z_2$ band topology and superconductivity in TMC $\mathrm{Ta}_2 \mathrm{Ni}_3 \mathrm{Te}_5$. Our electrical transport measurements show that the metallization emerges at 3.3 GPa, followed by appearance of the superconductivity at $P_{\mathrm{c}}$ = 21.3 GPa with $T_{\mathrm{c}} \sim$ 0.4 K. Room-temperature synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate the stability of the pristine …
The relationship between charge-density-wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC), two vital physical phases in condensed matter physics, has always been the focus of scientists' research over the past decades. Motivated by this research hotspot, we systematically studied the physical properties of the layered telluride chalcogenide superconductors CuIr2-xAlxTe4. Through the resistance and magnetization measurements, we found that the CDW order was destroyed by a small amount of Al doping. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) kept changing with the change of doping amount and…
We study tunneling currents in a model consisting of two non-unitary ferromagnetic spin-triplet superconductors separated by a thin insulating layer. We find a novel interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity, manifested in the Josephson effect. This offers the possibility of tuning dissipationless currents of charge and spin in a well-defined manner by adjusting the magnetization direction on either side of the junction.
We characterize the coexistence of itinerant ferromagnetism and spin-triplet superconductivity within a single mechanism involving local (Hund's rule) exchange among $d$ electrons. The ratio of transition temperatures and the spin anisotropy of the superconducting gap is estimated for $ZrZn_2$. The $A$ phase is stable in very low applied and molecular fields, whereas the $A1$ phases persists in higher fields. A small residual magnetic moment is present below the Stoner threshold in the superconducting phase.
Here we report the first observation of superconductivity in the AB2X4-type ternary telluride CuIr2Te4, which is synthesized by a solid-state method in an evacuated quartz jacket. It adopts a disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164), which embodies a two-dimensional IrTe2 layers and intercalated by Cu between the layers. We use a combination of experimental and first principles calculation analysis to look insight into the structural and physical properties. CuIr2Te4 consistently exhibited a bulk superconductivity transition at 2.5 K in electrical resistivity, magnetic sus…
Over the past few years Fe chalcogenides (FeSe/Te) have advanced to the forefront of Fe-based superconductors (FeBS) research. The most intriguing results thus far are for intercalated and monolayer FeSe, however experimental studies are still inconclusive. Yet, bulk FeSe itself remains an unusual case when compared with pnictogen-based FeBS, and may hold clues to understanding the more exotic FeSe-derivatives. The FeSe phase diagram is unlike the pnictides: the orthorhombic distortion, which is likely to be of a "spin-nematic" nature in numerous pnictides, is not accompanied by magnetic order…
We report superconductivity in defective pyrite-type iridium chalcogenides IrxCh2. Maximum values of Tc of 6.4 K for Ir0.91Se2 and 4.7 K for Ir0.93Te2 were observed. It was found that Ir0.75Ch2 is close to the boundary between metallic and insulating states and IrxCh2 systems undergo nonmetal to metal transitions as x increases. On the basis of density functional theory calculations and the observed large variation in the Ch-Ch distance with x, we suggest that Ir0.75Ch2 is the parent compound for the present superconductors.
The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.15 has been determined using element specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. Combining magnetic, thermodynamic and scattering measurements, we conclude that the long range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments aligned primarily along the c axis coexists with the bulk superconductivity at zero field. At an applied magnetic field >= 0.6 T, superconductivity still coexists with the ferromagnetic Eu2+ moments which are polarized along the field direction. We propose a spontaneous vortex state…
Topological superconductivity has been sought for in a variety of heterostructure systems, the interest being that a material displaying such a phenomenon could prove to be the ideal platform to support Majorana fermions, which in turn could be the basis for advanced qubit technologies. Recently the high Tc family of superconductors, $FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x}$, have been shown to exhibit the property of topological superconductivity and further, evidence has been found for the presence of Majorana fermions. We have studied the interplay of topology, magnetism and superconductivity in the $FeSe_{x}Te_{…
We propose a novel mechanism for the coexistence of metallic ferromagnetism and singlet superconductivity assuming that the magnetic instability is due to kinetic exchange. Within this scenario, the unpaired electrons which contribute to the magnetization have a positive feedback on the gain of the kinetic energy in the coexisting phase by undressing the effective mass of the carriers involved into the pairing. The evolution of the magnetization and pairing amplitude, and the phase diagram are first analyzed for a generic kinetic exchange model and then are determined within a specific case wi…
This is a model study for the emergence of superconductivity in ferromagnetically ordered phases of cubic materials whose crystal structure lacks inversion symmetry. A Ginzburg-Landau-type theory is used to find the ferromagnetic state and to determine the coupling of magnetic order to superconductivity. It is found that noncentrosymmetricity evokes a helical magnetic phase. If the wavelength of the magnetic order is long enough, it gives rise to modulations of the order parameter of superconductivity, both in modulus and complex phase. At magnetic domain walls the nucleation of superconductiv…
We discuss the possibility of coexistence of spin-singlet superconductivity and ferromagnetism in a model where the same electrons are assumed responsible for both of them. Our calculations include both zero and finite momentum pairing states with both s-wave and d-wave pairing symmetry. Under the mean-field approximation, the thermodynamic potential of the non-magnetic superconducting (SC) state is shown to be always lower than that of the superconducting ferromagnetic (SF) state. It follows that the spin-singlet SF state is energetically unfavorable, and a spin-triplet SF state is more likel…
We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental cha…
Iron-chalcogenide compounds with FeSe(Te, S) layers did not attract much attention until the discovery of high-Tc superconductivity (SC) in the iron-pnictide compounds at the begining of 2008. Compared with FeAs-based superconductors, iron-chalcogenide superconductors have aroused enormous enthusiasm to study the relationship between SC and magnetisms with several distinct features, such as different antiferromagnetic ground states with relatively large moments in the parents, indicating possibly different superconducting mechanisms, the existence of the excess Fe atoms or Fe vacancies in the …
By means of first-principles calculations, we predict two new types of partially hydrogenated graphene systems: C$_{6}$H$_{1}$ and C$_{6}$H$_{5}$, which are shown to be ferromagnetic (FM) semimetal and FM narrow-gap semiconductor, respectively. When properly doped, the Fermi surface of the two systems consists of an electron pocket or six hole patches in the first Brillouin zone with completely spin-polarized charge carries. If superconductivity exists in these systems, the stable pairing symmetries are shown to be $p+ip$ for electron doped case, and anisotropic $p+ip$ for hole doped case. The…
We have studied EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, thermopower, magnetic susceptibility, magnetoresistance and specific heat. Partial substitution of As with P results in the shrinkage of lattice, which generates chemical pressure to the system. It is found that EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ undergoes a superconducting transition at 26 K, followed by ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. This finding is the first observation of superconductivity stabilized by internal chemical pressure, and supplies a r…
Here we report the effect of structural and superconductivity properties on Ru doped CuIr2Te4 telluride chalcogenide. XRD results suggest that the CuIr2-xRuxTe4 maintain the disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164) for x less than 0.3. The lattice constants, a and c, both decrease with increasing Ru content. Temperature-dependent resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements are performed to characterize the superconducting properties systematically. Our results suggest that the optimal doping level for superconductivity in CuIr2-xRuxTe4 is x = 0.05, …
Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic phenomena. Their coexistence implies either a modulated ferromagnetic order parameter on a lengthscale shorter than the superconducting coherence length or a weak exchange coupling between the itinerant superconducting electrons and the localized ordered spins. In some iron based pnictide superconductors the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity has been clearly demonstrated. The nature of the coexistence, however, remains elusive since no clear understanding of the spin structure in the superconducting state has been reached …
The superconducting order parameter in the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$ ($T_\textrm{c}$ = 14.2 K) is investigated by point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The energy gap magnitude (3.8 meV at 1.70 K) and temperature dependence as extracted from the Andreev conductance spectra reveal strong-coupling superconductivity and is consistent with $s$-wave order parameter symmetry. No clear evidence for multiple order parameters or interference from multiple bands is observed. A conductance enhancement persists above $T_\textrm{c}$ to $\sim 18-20$ K and possible or…
We have investigated the Se isotope effect in layered bismuth chalcogenide (BiCh2-based) superconductor LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 with 76Se and 80Se. For all examined samples, the Se concentration, which is linked to the superconducting properties, is successfully controlled within x = 1.09-1.14 in LaO0.6F0.4BiS2-xSex. From the magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements, changes in Tc are not observed for the LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 samples with 76Se and 80Se isotopes. Our results suggest that pairing in the BiCh2-based superconductors is not mediated by phonons, and unconventional supercondu…
We explore various temperature dependencies and thermodynamic quantities of a mean field model of a ferromagnetic-superconducting system. The starting point for this model is based on an s-wave pairing scheme in the singlet channel of the superconducting state and a spontaneously broken symmetry phase in the ferromagnetic state. We show numerically and analytically that a state of coexistence reveals itself and is favored energetically over other possible states, and a simple phase diagram is developed. Finally, a comparison of the specific heat with experiment is shown.
A recent experiment on Nb-doped Bi2Se3 showed that zero field magnetization appears below the superconducting transition temperature. This gives evidence that the superconducting state breaks time-reversal symmetry spontaneously and possibly be in the chiral topological phase. This is in sharp contrast to the Cu-doped case which is possibly in the nematic phase and breaks rotational symmetry spontaneously. By deriving the free energy of the system from a microscopic model, we show that the magnetic moments of the Nb atoms can be polarized by the chiral Cooper pairs and enlarge the phase space …
Bulk magnetization, transport and neutron scattering measurements were performed to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of a polycrystalline sample of the newly discovered ferromagnetic superconductor, CeO$_{0.3}$F$_{0.7}$BiS$_{2}$. Ferromagnetism develops below T$_{FM}$ = 6.54(8) K and superconductivity is found to coexist with the ferromagnetic state below T$_{SC}$ ~ 4.5 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a very weakly dispersive magnetic excitation at 1.8 meV that can be explained by an Ising-like spin Hamiltonian. Under application of an external magnetic fi…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe1.03Te0.7Se0.3 (Tc = 13 K) to investigate the electronic structure relevant to superconductivity. We observed a hole- and an electron-like Fermi surfaces at the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, which are nearly nested by the Q~(pi, pi) wave vector. We do not find evidence for the nesting instability with Q~(pi+delta, 0) reminiscent of the antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound Fe1+yTe. We have observed an isotropic superconducting gap along the hole-like Ferm…
Tunnel-diode resonator technique was used to study crystals of ferromagnetic re-entrant superconductor, ErRh$_{4}$B$_{4}$. At the boundary between ferromagnetism (FM) and superconductivity (SC), dynamic magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T,H)$, exhibits highly asymmetric behavior upon warming and cooling as well as enhanced diamagnetism on the SC side. SC phase nucleates upon warming in a cascade of discontinuous jumps in magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,H)$, whereas FM phase develops gradually as reported in detail in \cite{prozorov2008}. Here we further investigate enhanced diamagnetism. We find that w…
Through the combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and the heat capacity measurements, we studied the effect of Ce doping in the newly discovered SrFBiS${2}$ system. It is found that Sr${0.5}$Ce${0.5}$FBiS${2}$ undergoes a second-order transition below $7.5 K, followed by a superconducting transition with the critical temperature Tc=2.8 K. Our transport, specific heat and DC-magnetization results suggest the presence of bulk ferromagneticcorrelation of Ce ion below 7.5 K that coexist with superconductivity when the temperature is further lowered below …
Superconducting characteristics such as the Meissner-Ochsenfeld state, screening supercurrents and hysteresis loops of type-II superconductors were observed from the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetic moment, m(T, H), in graphite powders reacted with sulfur for temperatures below 9.0 K. The temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1(T) was determined and the zero-temperature penetration depth, lambda(0), was estimated (lambda (0) = 227 nm). The superconductivity was observed to be highly anisotropic and to coexist with a ferromagnetic state that has a Curie …
We investigated transport and magnetic properties of NdFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystal under hydrostatic pressures up to 50\,GPa. The ambient pressure superconductivity at $T_{c} \sim$ 45.4\,K is fully suppressed at $P_{c} \sim$ 21 GPa. Upon further increase of the pressure, the ferromagnetism associated with the order of rare-earth subsystem is induced at the border of superconductivity. Our finding is supported by the hysteresis in the magnetization $M$($H$) loops and the strong increase in the field cooled data, $M$($T$), toward low temperatures. We also show that the temperature evol…
The compound Sr$_{0.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ belongs to the intensively studied family of layered BiS$_2$ superconductors. It attracts special attention because superconductivity at $T_{sc} = 2.8$ K was found to coexist with local-moment ferromagnetic order with a Curie temperature $T_C = 7.5$ K. Recently it was reported that upon replacing S by Se $T_C$ drops and ferromagnetism becomes of an itinerant nature (Thakur et al., Sci. Reports 6, 37527 (2016)). At the same time $T_{sc}$ increases and it was argued superconductivity coexists with itinerant ferromagnetism. Here we report a muon spin ro…
The metal-metal bond in metal-rich chalcogenide is known to exhibit various structures and dominate interesting physical properties. Ta2Se can be obtained by both arc-melting and solid-state pellet methods. Ta2Se crystallizes a layered tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm (S.G.129, Pearson symbol tP6). Each unit cell consists of four layers of body-centered closed packing Ta atoms sandwiched between two square nets of Se atoms, forming the Se-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Se networks. A combined result of magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements on Ta2Se indicate the bulk sup…
By tuning the physical and chemical pressures of layered perovskite materials we can realize the quantum states of both superconductors and insulators. By reducing the thickness of a layered crystal to a nanometer level, a nanofilm crystal can provide novel quantum states that have not previously been found in bulk crystals. Here we report the realization of high-temperature superconductivity in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ nanofilm single crystals. Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ thin film with the highest transition temperature $T_c$ (midpoint) of 64~K exhibits zero resistance in electric transport measurements. The superco…
We report the anomalous charge density wave (CDW) state evolution and dome-like superconductivity (SC) in CuIr2Te4-xSex series. Room temperature powder X ray-diffraction (PXRD) results indicate that CuIr2Te4-xSex compounds retain the same structure as the host CuIr2Te4 and the unit cell constants a and c manifest a linear decline with increasing Se content. Magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity results suggest that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits a weak dome-like variation as substituting Te by Se with the maximum Tc = 2.83 K for x = 0.1 followed by suppression in T…
Superconducting [(Li(1-x)Fex)OH](Fe(1-y)Liy)Se (x ~ 0.2, y ~ 0.08) was synthesized by hydrothermal methods and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure contains anti-PbO type (Fe(1-y)Liy)Se layers separated by layers of (Li(1-x)Fex)OH. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal superconductivity at 43 K. An anomaly in the diamagnetic shielding indicates ferromagnetic ordering near 10 K while superconductivity is retained. The ferromagnetism emerges from the iron atoms in the (Li(1-x)Fex)OH layer. Isothermal magnetization …
A possibility for a new family of intermetallic perovskite superconductors Sc3XB, with X = Tl, In, Ga and Al, is presented as a result of KKR electronic structure and pseudopotential phonon calculations. The large values of computed McMillan--Hopfield parameters on scandium suggest appearance of superconductivity in Sc3XB compounds. On the other hand, the possibility of weak itinerant ferromagnetic behavior of Sc3X systems is indicated by the small magnetic moment on Sc atoms in two cases of X =~ l and In. Also the electronic structure and resulting superconducting parameters for more realisti…
We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$PdSe$_5$. The measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat reveal that Ta$_2$PdSe$_5$ is a bulk superconductor with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 2.5 K. The zero-field electronic specific heat in the superconducting state can be fitted with a two-gap BCS model. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ shows a linear temperature dependence, and the value of $H_{c2}$(0) is much higher than the estimated Pauli limiting field $H_{c2}^{P}$ and orbital limiting field $H_{c2}^{orb}$. All these results of sp…
In order to clarify the influence of ferromagnetism on superconductivity through a normal metal layer, the superconducting properties of epitaxial Nb(110)/Au(111)/Fe(110) trilayers were studied as a function of the thickness tAu of the intervening Au layer. Structural characterization of the samples revealed sharp interfaces, almost free from roughness. A strong suppression of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed for tAu<10 A, implying a strong spin-polarization of the Au layer in the vicinity of the Au/Fe interface. A periodic change of Tc with a period of ~21 A (~9 atom…
Undoped iron superconductors accommodate $n=6$ electrons in five d-orbitals. Experimental and theoretical evidence shows that the strength of correlations increases with hole-doping, as the electronic filling approaches half-filling with $n=5$ electrons. This evidence delineates a scenario in which the parent compound of iron superconductors is the half-filled system, in analogy to cuprate superconductors. In cuprates the superconductivity can be induced upon electron or hole doping. In this work we propose to search for high-Tc superconductivity and strong correlations in chromium pnictides a…
We have carried out detailed magnetic and transport studies of the new Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex (x = 0.5, 1) superconductors derived by doping Se in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2. Se-doping produces several effects: it suppresses semiconducting like behavior observed in the undoped Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2, ferromagnetic ordering temperature, TFM, decreases considerably from 7.5 K (in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2) to 3.5 K and superconducting transition temperature, Tc, gets enhanced slightly to 2.9 - 3.3 K. Thus in these Se-doped materials, TFM is just marginally higher than Tc. Magnetization studies provide an evidence of bulk sup…
In this article we shortly review previous and recently published experimental results that provide evidence for intrinsic, magnetic-impurity-free ferromagnetism and for high-temperature superconductivity in carbon-based materials. The available data suggest that the origin of those phenomena is related to structural disorder and the presence of light elements like hydrogen, oxygen and/or sulfur.
LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 are insulating, nonmagnetic oxides, yet the interface between them exhibits a two-dimensional electron system with high electron mobility,1 superconductivity at low temperatures,2-6 and electric-field-tuned metal-insulator and superconductorinsulator phase transitions.3,6-8 Bulk magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements also suggest some form of magnetism depending on preparation conditions5,9-11 and suggest a tendency towards nanoscale electronic phase separation.10 Here we use local imaging of the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility to directly observe a landsc…
We report the effect of pressure on the electrical transport properties of the four-layer-type bismuth chalcogenide semiconductors LaOPbBiS$_{3}$ and La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi$_{3}$AgS$_{6}$ and present the discovery of a pressure-induced superconductivity. In both compounds, the semiconductorlike behavior concomitant with an anomaly in the more insulating state is gradually suppressed with increasing pressure while the superconductivity develops. The obtained phase diagrams, in sharp contrast with the interplay between the conventional charge density waves and superconductivity, suggest that the enha…
In this paper we address the question of coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the high temperature superconductor RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$. Using a field theoretical approach we study a one-fermion effective model of a ferromagnetic superconductor in which the quasiparticles responsible for the ferromagnetism form the Cooper pairs as well. We discuss the physical features which are different in this model and the standard BCS model and consider their experimental consequences.
The present article reviews recent experimental investigations of spin dynamics in iron-based superconductors and their parent compounds by means of inelastic neutron scattering. It mainly focuses on the most contemporary developments in this field, pertaining to the observations of magnetic resonant modes in new superconductors, spin anisotropy of low-energy magnetic fluctuations that has now been observed in a wide range of chemical compositions and doping levels, as well as their momentum-space anisotropy incurred by the spin-nematic order. The implications of these new findings for our und…
