While higher bundles are of clear relevance to higher gauge theory, examples other than abelian bundle gerbes are hard to come across. One would in particular like to see 2-bundles where the structure 2-group is the String 2-group associated to a compact simple simply-connected Lie group. This talk will outline a method to construct many examples over homogeneous spaces. We shall also consider one example in detail, giving explicit formulas for the crossed-module-valued Cech cocycle arising from a local trivialisation.
We discuss nonabelian bundle gerbes and their differential geometry using simplicial methods. Associated to any crossed module there is a simplicial group NC, the nerve of the 1-category defined by the crossed module and its geometric realization |NC|. Equivalence classes of principal bundles with structure group |NC| are shown to be one-to-one with stable equivalence classes of what we call crossed module gerbes bundle gerbes. We can also associate to a crossed module a 2-category C'. Then there are two equivalent ways how to view classifying spaces of NC-bundles and hence of |NC|-bundles and…
We use bundle gerbes and their connections and curvings to obtain an explicit formula for a de Rham representative of the string class of a loop group bundle. This is related to earlier work on calorons.
We provide a general, homotopy-theoretic definition of string group models within an $\infty$-category of smooth spaces, and we present new smooth models for the string group. Here, a smooth space is a presheaf of $\infty$-groupoids on the category of cartesian spaces. The key to our definition and construction of smooth string group models is a version of the singular complex functor, which assigns to a smooth space an underlying ordinary space. We provide new characterisations of principal $\infty$-bundles and group extensions in $\infty$-topoi, building on work of Nikolaus, Schreiber, and S…
The caloron correspondence can be understood as an equivalence of categories between $G$-bundles over circle bundles and $LG \rtimes_ρS^1$-bundles where $LG$ is the group of smooth loops in $G$. We use it, and lifting bundle gerbes, to derive an explicit differential form based formula for the (real) string class of an $LG \rtimes_ρS^1$-bundle.
The Lagrangian description of mechanical systems and the Legendre Transformation (considered as a passage from the Lagrangian to the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics) for point-like objects, for which the infinitesimal configuration space is TM, is based on the existence of canonical symplectic isomorphisms of double vector bundles T*TM, T*TM, and TT*M. We show that there exist an analogous picture in the dynamics of objects for which the configuration space is the vector bundle of n-vectors, if we make use of certain graded bundle structures of degree n, i.e. objects generalizing vecto…
We consider various generalisations of the string class of a loop group bundle. The string class is the obstruction to lifting a bundle whose structure group is the loop group $LG$ to one whose structure group is the Kac-Moody central extension of the loop group. We develop a notion of higher string classes for bundles whose structure group is the group of based loops, $ΩG$. In particular, we give a formula for characteristic classes in odd dimensions for such bundles which are associated to characteristic classes for $G$-bundles in the same way that the string class is related to the first Po…
We review the caloron correspondence between $G$-bundles on $M \times S^1$ and $ΩG$-bundles on $M$, where $ΩG$ is the space of smooth loops in the compact Lie group $G$. We use the caloron correspondence to define characteristic classes for $ΩG$-bundles, called string classes, by transgression of characteristic classes of $G$-bundles. These generalise the string class of Killingback to higher dimensional cohomology.
The present paper is a contribution to categorial index theory. Its main result is the calculation of the Pfaffian line bundle of a certain family of real Dirac operators as an object in the category of line bundles. Furthermore, it is shown how string structures give rise to trivialisations of that Pfaffian.
We propose a construction of Kähler and non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by branched double covers of twistor spaces. In this construction we use the twistor spaces of four-manifolds with self-dual conformal structures, with the examples of connected sum of $n$ $\mathbb{P}^{2}$s. We also construct $K3$-fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds from the branched double covers of the blow-ups of the twistor spaces. These manifolds can be used in heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions. We also construct stable and polystable vector bundles. Some classes of these vector bundles can give rise to s…
This brief survey aims to set the stage and summarize some of the ideas under discussion at the Workshop on Singular Geometry and Higgs Bundles in String Theory, to be held at the American Institute of Mathematics from October 30th to November 3rd, 2017. One of the most interesting aspects of the duality revolution in string theory is the understanding that gauge fields and matter representations can be described by intersection of branes. Since gauge theory is at the heart of our description of physical interactions, it has opened the door to the geometric engineering of many physical systems…
Just like Atiyah Lie algebroids encode the infinitesimal symmetries of principal bundles, exact Courant algebroids are believed to encode the infinitesimal symmetries of $S^1$-gerbes. At the same time, transitive Courant algebroids may be viewed as the higher analogue of Atiyah Lie algebroids, and the non-commutative analogue of exact Courant algebroids. In this article, we explore what the "principal bundle" behind transitive Courant algebroids are, and they turn out to be principal 2-bundles of string groups. First, we construct the stack of principal 2-bundles of string groups with connecti…
We develop the theory of simplicial extensions for bundle gerbes and their characteristic classes with a view towards studying descent problems and equivariance for bundle gerbes. Equivariant bundle gerbes are important in the study of orbifold sigma models. We consider in detail two examples: the basic bundle gerbe on a unitary group and a string structure for a principal bundle. We show that the basic bundle gerbe is equivariant for the conjugation action and calculate its characteristic class; we show also that a string structure gives rise to a bundle gerbe which is equivariant for a natur…
We construct equivariant, string and leading order characteristic classes and Chern-Simons classes for certain infinite rank bundles associated to fibrations occurring in loop spaces, Gromov-Witten theory and gauge theory. Results include a restatement of the S^1 index theorem using equivariant classes on the tangent bundle to loop space; the expression of some GW invariants in terms of string and leading order classes for infinite rank bundles over moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves for semipositive symplectic manifolds; the identification of the real cohomology of a loop group with ce…
We give a complete and explicit description of the kinematical data of higher gauge theory on principal 2-bundles with the string 2-group model of Schommer-Pries as structure 2-group. We start with a self-contained review of the weak 2-category Bibun of Lie groupoids, bibundles and bibundle morphisms. We then construct categories internal to Bibun, which allow us to define principal 2-bundles with 2-groups internal to Bibun as structure 2-groups. Using these, we Lie-differentiate the 2-group model of the string group and we obtain the well-known string Lie 2-algebra. Generalizing the different…
We give a generalization of the notion of a Cartan-Ehresmann connection from Lie algebras to L-infinity algebras and use it to study the obstruction theory of lifts through higher String-like extensions of Lie algebras. We find (generalized) Chern-Simons and BF-theory functionals this way and describe aspects of their parallel transport and quantization. It is known that over a D-brane the Kalb-Ramond background field of the string restricts to a 2-bundle with connection (a gerbe) which can be seen as the obstruction to lifting the PU(H)-bundle on the D-brane to a U(H)-bundle. We discuss how t…
The caloron correspondence is a tool that gives an equivalence between principal $G$-bundles based over the manifold $M \times S^1$ and principal $LG$-bundles on $M$, where $LG$ is the Fréchet Lie group of smooth loops in the Lie group $G$. This thesis uses the caloron correspondence to construct certain differential forms called "string potentials" that play the same role as Chern-Simons forms for loop group bundles. Following their construction, the string potentials are used to define degree 1 differential characteristic classes for $ΩU(n)$-bundles. The notion of an "$Ω$ vector bundle" is i…
We show that there exists a natural Tulczyjew triple in the dynamics of objects for which the standard kinematic configuration space $TM$, i.e. the tangent bundle, is replaced with its $n$-th exterior power, i.e. the bundle of tangent $n$-vectors. In this framework, which is fully covariant, we geometrically derive phase equations, as well as Euler-Lagrange equations, including nonholonomic constraints into the picture. Dynamics of strings and a constrained Plateau problem in statics are particular cases of this framework.
We give a classifying theory for $LG$-bundles, where $LG$ is the loop group of a compact Lie group $G$, and present a calculation for the string class of the universal $LG$-bundle. We show that this class is in fact an equivariant cohomology class and give an equivariant differential form representing it. We then use the caloron correspondence to define (higher) characteristic classes for $LG$-bundles and to prove for the free loop group an analogue of the result for characteristic classes for based loop groups in Murray-Vozzo (J. Geom. Phys., 60(9), 2010). These classes have a natural interpr…
This paper shows that, away from 6, the kernel of the Witten genus is precisely the ideal consisting of (bordism classes of) Cayley plane bundles with connected structure group, but only after restricting the Witten genus to string bordism. It does so by showing that the divisibility properties of Cayley plane bundle characteristic numbers arising in Borel-Hirzebruch Lie-group-theoretic calculations correspond precisely to the divisibility properties arising in the Hovey-Ravenel-Wilson BP-Hopf-ring-theoretic calculation of string bordism at primes >3.
We study bundle gerbes on manifolds $M$ that carry an action of a connected Lie group $G$. We show that these data give rise to a smooth 2-group extension of $G$ by the smooth 2-group of hermitean line bundles on $M$. This 2-group extension classifies equivariant structures on the bundle gerbe, and its non-triviality poses an obstruction to the existence of equivariant structures. We present a new global approach to the parallel transport of a bundle gerbe with connection, and use it to give an alternative construction of this smooth 2-group extension in terms of a homotopy-coherent version of…
The explanation of the photoelectric effect by Einstein and Maxwell's field theory of electromagnetism have motivated De Broglie to make the hypothesis that matter exhibits both waves and particles like-properties. These representations of matter are enlightened by string theory which represents particles with stringlike entities. Mathematically, string theory can be formulated with a gauge theory on loop spaces which is equivalent to the differential geometry of gerbes. In this paper, we show that the descent theory of Giraud and Grothendieck can enable to describe the wave-like properties of…
We summarize the main results of our recent investigation of bundles of real Clifford modules and briefly touch on some applications to string theory and supergravity.
In this paper we present a construction of stable bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds using the method of bundle extensions. This construction applies to any given Calabi-Yau threefold with h^{1,1}>1. We give examples of stable bundles of rank 2 and 4 constructed out of pure geometric data of the given Calabi-Yau space. As an application, we find that some of these bundles satisfy the physical constraint imposed by heterotic string anomaly cancellation.
Using basic homotopy constructions, we show that isomorphism classes of string structures on spin bundles are naturally given by certain degree 3 cohomology classes, which we call string classes, on the total space of the bundle. Using a Hodge isomorphism, we then show that the harmonic representative of a string class gives rise to a canonical 3-form on the base space, refining the associated differential character. We explicitly calculate this 3-form for homogeneous metrics on 3-spheres, and we discuss how the cohomology theory tmf could potentially encode obstructions to positive Ricci curv…
We present a finite-dimensional and smooth formulation of string structures on spin bundles. It uses trivializations of the Chern-Simons 2-gerbe associated to this bundle. Our formulation is particularly suitable to deal with string connections: it enables us to prove that every string structure admits a string connection and that the possible choices form an affine space. Further we discover a new relation between string connections, 3-forms on the base manifold, and degree three differential cohomology. We also discuss in detail the relation between our formulation of string connections and …
In arXiv:1008.1018 it is shown that a given stable vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ which satisfies $c_2(X)=c_2(V)$ can be deformed to a solution of the Strominger system and the equations of motion of heterotic string theory. In this note we extend this result to the polystable case and construct explicit examples of polystable bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds where it applies. The polystable bundle is given by a spectral cover bundle, for the visible sector, and a suitably chosen bundle, for the hidden sector. This provides a new class of heterotic flux co…
