The hot Neptune desert, a distinct lack of highly irradiated planets in the size range of Neptune, remains one of the most intriguing results of exoplanet population studies. A deeper understanding of the atmosphere of exoplanets sitting at the edge or even within the Neptune desert will allow us to better understand if planetary formation or evolution processes are at the origin of the desert. A detection of sodium in WASP-166b was presented previously with tentative line broadening at the 3.4 sigma with the HARPS spectrograph. We update this result with two transits observed with the ESPRESSO spectrograph, confirming the detection in each night and the broadened character of the line. This result marks the first confirmed resolved sodium detection within the Neptune desert. In this work, we additionally highlight the importance of treating low-SNR spectral regions, particularly where absorption lines of stellar sodium and planetary sodium overlap at mid-transit - an important caveat for future observations of the system.
WASP-47 hosts a remarkable planetary system containing a hot Jupiter (WASP-47 b; P = 4.159 days) with an inner super-Earth (WASP-47 e; P = 0.7896 days), a close-orbiting outer Neptune (WASP-47 d; P = 9.031 days), and a long period giant planet (WASP-47 c; P = 588.4 days). We use the new TESS photometry to refine the orbital ephemerides of the transiting planets in the system, particularly the hot Jupiter WASP-47 b, for which we find an update equating to a 17.4 min shift in the transit time. We report new radial velocity measurements from the ESPRESSO spectrograph for WASP-47, which we use to …
We present the detection of sodium absorption in the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet WASP-17b, an inflated 'hot-Jupiter' in a tight orbit around an F6 dwarf. In-transit observations of WASP-17 made with the MIKE spectrograph on the 6.5-m Magellan Telescope were analysed for excess planetary atmospheric absorption in the sodium I 'D' doublet spectral region. Using the interstellar sodium absorption lines as reference, we detect an excess 0.58 \pm 0.13 per cent transit signal, with 4.5σ confidence, at 1.5 Å bandwidth around the stellar sodium absorption feature. This result is consistent wit…
With high-resolution spectroscopy we can study exoplanet atmospheres and learn about their chemical composition, temperature profiles, and presence of clouds and winds, mainly in hot, giant planets. State-of-the-art instrumentation is pushing these studies towards smaller exoplanets. Of special interest are the few planets in the 'Neptune desert', a lack of Neptune-size planets in close orbits around their hosts. Here, we assess the presence of water in one such planet, the bloated super-Neptune WASP-166 b, which orbits an F9-type star in a short orbit of 5.4 days. Despite its close-in orbit, …
Recent progress in high-resolution transmission spectroscopy has offered new avenues in which to characterise the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets. High-resolution cross-correlation spectroscopy allows for the unambiguous detection of molecules/atoms. It has also been used to map both atmospheric dynamics and longitudinal variations in the abundance of species across the morning and evening limbs. We present multiple VLT/ESPRESSO observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b, from which we constrain relative abundances of various neutral metals consistently across all observations, whils…
We report the first detection of sodium absorption in the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter WASP-52b. We observed one transit of WASP-52b with the low-resolution Optical System for Imaging and low-Intermediate-Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The resulting transmission spectrum, covering the wavelength range from 522 nm to 903 nm, is flat and featureless, except for the significant narrow absorption signature at the sodium doublet, which can be explained by an atmosphere in solar composition with clouds at 1 mbar. A cloud-free atmosphere is …
WASP-127b is one of the puffiest exoplanets found to date, with a mass only $3.4$ Neptune masses, but a radius larger than Jupiter. It is also located at the border of the Neptune desert, which describes the lack of highly-irradiated Neptune-sized planets, and which remains poorly understood. Its large scale height and bright host star make the transiting WASP-127b a valuable target to characterise in transmission spectroscopy. We use combined EulerCam and TESS light curves to recalculate the system's parameters. Additionally, we present an in-depth search for sodium in four transit observatio…
Motivated by both ground- and space-based detections of the sodium doublet in the transmission spectra of exoplanetary atmospheres, we revisit the theory and interpretation of sodium lines in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE), where collisions are not efficient enough to maintain a Boltzmann distribution for the excited and ground states of the sodium atom. We consider non-Boltzmann distributions that account for the ineffectiveness of collisions. We analyze the sodium doublet in transmission spectra measured at low (HAT-P-1b, HAT-P-12b, HD 189733b, WASP-6b, WASP-17b and WASP-39b) and…
High-resolution optical spectroscopy during the transit of HD 189733b, a prototypical hot Jupiter, allowed the resolution of the Na I D sodium lines in the planet, giving access to the extreme conditions of the planet upper atmosphere. We have undertaken HEARTS, a spectroscopic survey of exoplanet upper atmospheres, to perform a comparative study of hot gas giants and determine how stellar irradiation affect them. Here, we report on the first HEARTS observations of the hot Saturn-mass planet WASP-49b. We observed the planet with the HARPS high-resolution spectrograph at ESO 3.6m telescope. We …
High-resolution optical spectroscopy is a powerful tool to characterise exoplanetary atmospheres from the ground. The sodium D lines, with their large cross sections, are especially suited to study the upper layers of atmospheres in this context. We report on the results from HEARTS, a spectroscopic survey of exoplanet atmospheres, performing a comparative study of hot gas giants to determine the effects of stellar irradiation. In this second installation of the series, we highlight the detection of neutral sodium on the ultra-hot giant WASP-76b. We observed three transits of the planet using …
Despite swift progress in the characterisation of exoplanet atmospheres in composition and structure, the study of atmospheric dynamics has not progressed at the same speed. While theoretical models have been developed to describe the lower layers of the atmosphere and, disconnected, the exosphere, little is known about the intermediate layers up to the thermosphere. We aim to provide a clearer picture of atmospheric dynamics for the class of ultra hot Jupiters, highly-irradiated gas giants, on the example of WASP-76~b. We analysed two datasets jointly, obtained with the HARPS and ESPRESSO spe…
In this paper, we present high-resolution spectroscopic transit observations from ESPRESSO of the super-Neptune WASP-166~b. In addition to spectroscopic ESPRESSO data, we analyse photometric data from {\sl TESS} of six WASP-166~b transits along with simultaneous NGTS observations of the ESPRESSO runs. These observations were used to fit for the planetary parameters as well as assessing the level of stellar activity (e.g. spot crossings, flares) present during the ESPRESSO observations. We utilise the Reloaded Rossiter McLaughlin (RRM) technique to spatially resolve the stellar surface, charact…
We present an optical transmission spectrum for WASP-94A b, the first atmospheric characterisation of this highly-inflated hot Jupiter. The planet has a reported radius of $1.72^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ R$_{\textrm{Jup}}$, a mass of only $0.456^{+0.032}_{-0.036}$ M$_{\textrm{Jup}}$, and an equilibrium temperature of $1508 \pm 75$ K. We observed the planet transit spectroscopically with the EFOSC2 instrument on the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile: the first use of NTT/EFOSC2 for transmission spectroscopy. We achieved an average transit-depth precision of $128$ ppm for bin widths o…
We present the optical transmission spectrum of the highly inflated Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-21b, using three transits obtained with the ACAM instrument on the William Herschel Telescope through the LRG-BEASTS survey (Low Resolution Ground-Based Exoplanet Atmosphere Survey using Transmission Spectroscopy). Our transmission spectrum covers a wavelength range of 4635-9000 Angstrom, achieving an average transit depth precision of 197ppm compared to one atmospheric scale height at 246ppm. We detect Na I absorption in a bin width of 30 Angstrom, at >4$σ$ confidence, which extends over 100 Angstro…
The study of exoplanet atmospheres is essential to understand the formation, evolution and composition of exoplanets. The transmission spectroscopy technique is playing a significant role in this domain. In particular, the combination of state-of-the-art spectrographs at low- and high-spectral resolution is key to our understanding of atmospheric structure and composition. Two transits of the close-in sub Saturn-mass planet,WASP-127b, have been observed with ESPRESSO in the frame of the Guaranteed Time Observations Consortium. Transit observations allow us to study simultaneously the system ar…
We have obtained $> 10$ hours of medium resolution ($R \sim 15000$) spectroscopic exposures on the transiting exoplanet host star WASP-12, including $\sim2$ hours while its planet, WASP-12b, is in transit, with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The out-of-transit and in-transit spectra are coadded into master out-of-transit and in-transit spectra, from which we create a master transmission spectrum. Strong, statistically significant absorption features are seen in the transmission spectrum at H$α$ and \ion{Na}{1} (the Na D doublet). There is the suggestion of pre- and post-transit absorption i…
The technique of transmission spectroscopy allows us to constrain the chemical composition of the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets. It relies on very high signal-to-noise spectroscopic (or spectrophotometric) observations and is thus most suited for bright exoplanet host stars. In the era of TESS, NGST and PLATO, more and more suitable targets, even for mid-sized telescopes, are discovered. Furthermore, a wealth of archival data is available that could become a basis for long-term monitoring of exo-atmospheres. We analyzed archival HARPS spectroscopic time series of four host stars to tran…
The detection of increased sodium absorption during primary transit implies the presence of an atmosphere around an extrasolar planet, and enables us to infer the structure of this atmosphere. Sodium has only been detected in the atmospheres of two planets to date - HD189733b and HD209458b. WASP-17b is the least dense planet currently known. It has a radius approximately twice that of Jupiter and orbits an F6-type star. The transit signal is expected to be about five times larger than that observed in HD209458b. We obtained 24 spectra with the GIRAFFE spectrograph on the VLT, eight during tran…
WASP-52b is a low density hot Jupiter orbiting a moderately active K2V star. Previous low-resolution studies have revealed a cloudy atmosphere and found atomic Na above the cloud deck. Here we report the detection of excess absorption at the Na doublet, the H$α$ line, and the K D$_1$ line. We derived a high-resolution transmission spectrum based on three transits of WASP-52b, observed with the ultra stable, high-resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO at the VLT. We measure a line contrast of $1.09\pm 0.16$% for Na D$_1$, $1.31\pm 0.13$% for Na D$_2$, $0.86\pm 0.13$% for H$α$, and $0.46\pm 0.13$% for…
High resolution precision spectroscopy provides a multitude of robust techniques for probing exoplanetary atmospheres. We present multiple VLT/ESPRESSO transit observations of the hot-Jupiter exoplanet WASP-19b with previously published but disputed atmospheric features from low resolution studies. Through spectral synthesis and modeling of the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect we calculate stellar, orbital and physical parameters for the system. From narrow-band spectroscopy we do not detect any of H\,I, Fe\,I, Mg\,I, Ca\,I, Na\,I and K\,I neutral species, placing upper limits on their line con…
High-resolution transmission spectroscopy is a method for understanding the chemical and physical properties of upper exoplanetary atmospheres. Due to large absorption cross-sections, resonance lines of atomic sodium D-lines (at 5889.95 $Å$ and 5895.92 $Å$) produce large transmission signals. Our aim is to unveil the physical properties of WASP-17b through an accurate measurement of the sodium absorption in the transmission spectrum. We analyze 37 high-resolution spectra observed during a single transit of WASP-17b with the MIKE instrument on the 6.5 meter Magellan Telescopes. We exclude stell…
Transit spectroscopy is one of the most commonly used methods to characterize exoplanets atmospheres. From the ground, these observations are very challenging due to the terrestrial atmosphere and its intrinsic variations, but high-spectral resolution observations overcome this difficulty by resolving the spectral lines and taking advantage of the different Doppler velocities of the Earth, the host star and the exoplanet. We analyze the transmission spectrum around the Na I doublet at 589 nm of the exoplanet WASP-69b, a hot Jupiter orbiting a K-type star with a period of 3.868 days, and compar…
Aims. We report on ESPRESSO high-resolution transmission spectroscopic observations of two primary transits of the highly-irradiated, ultra-hot Jupiter-size planet WASP-76b. We investigate the presence of several key atomic and molecular features of interest that may reveal the atmospheric properties of the planet. Methods. We extracted two transmission spectra of WASP-76b with R approx 140,000 using a procedure that allowed us to process the full ESPRESSO wavelength range (3800-7880 A) simultaneously. We observed that at a high signal-to-noise ratio, the continuum of ESPRESSO spectra shows wi…
We present an atmospheric transmission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76 b by analyzing archival data obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The dataset spans three transits, two with a wavelength coverage between 2900 and 5700 Armstrong, and the third one between 5250 and 10300 Armstrong. From the one-dimensional, time dependent spectra we constructed white and chromatic light curves, the latter with typical integration band widths of ~200 Armstrong. We computed the wavelength dependent planet-to-star radii ratios takin…
We report on a pilot study of a novel observing technique, defocussed transmission spectroscopy, and its application to the study of exoplanet atmospheres using ground-based platforms. Similar to defocussed photometry, defocussed transmission spectroscopy has an added advantage over normal spectroscopy in that it reduces systematic errors due to flat-fielding, PSF variations, slit-jaw imperfections and other effects associated with ground-based observations. For one of the planetary systems studied, WASP-12b, we report a tentative detection of additional Na absorption of 0.12+/-0.03[+0.03]% du…
WASP-121b is one of the most studied Ultra-hot Jupiters: many recent analyses of its atmosphere report interesting features at different wavelength ranges. In this paper we analyze one transit of WASP-121b acquired with the high-resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO at VLT in 1-telescope mode, and one partial transit taken during the commissioning of the instrument in 4-telescope mode. We investigate the anomalous in-transit radial velocity curve and study the transmission spectrum of the planet. By analysing the in-transit radial velocities we were able to infer the presence of the atmospheric Ros…
Hot Jupiters are predicted to have hot, clear daysides and cooler, cloudy nightsides. Recently, an asymmetric signature of iron absorption has been resolved in the transmission spectrum of WASP-76b using ESPRESSO on ESO's Very large Telescope. This feature is interpreted as being due to condensation of iron on the nightside, resulting in a different absorption signature from the evening than from the morning limb of the planet. It represents the first time that a chemical gradient has been observed across the surface of a single exoplanet. In this work, we confirm the presence of the asymmetri…
We present a dimensionless index that quantifies the degree of cloudiness of the atmosphere of a transiting exoplanet. Our cloudiness index is based on measuring the transit radii associated with the line center and wing of the sodium or potassium line. In deriving this index, we revisited the algebraic formulae for inferring the isothermal pressure scale height from transit measurements. We demonstrate that the formulae of Lecavelier et al. and Benneke & Seager are identical: the former is inferring the temperature while assuming a value for the mean molecular mass and the latter is inferring…
We investigate the atmospheric composition of the long period ($P_{\rm orb}=$ 10 days), eccentric exo-Saturn WASP-117b. WASP-117b could be in atmospheric temperature and chemistry similar to WASP-107b. In mass and radius WASP-117b is similar to WASP-39b, which allows a comparative study of these planets. We analyze a near-infrared transmission spectrum of WASP-117b taken with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 G141, which was reduced with two independent pipelines. High resolution measurements were taken with VLT/ESPRESSO in the optical. We report the robust ($3σ$) detection of a water spectral featu…
We have performed ground-based transmission spectroscopy of the hot Jupiter orbiting the cool dwarf WASP-80 using the ACAM instrument on the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) as part of the LRG-BEASTS programme. This is the third paper of a ground-based transmission spectroscopy survey of hot Jupiters using low-resolution grism spectrographs. We observed two transits of the planet and have constructed transmission spectra spanning a wavelength range of 4640-8840A. Our transmission spectrum is inconsistent with a previously claimed detection of potassium in WASP-80b's atmosphere, and is instead …
A Comprehensive Analysis of the Panchromatic Transmission Spectrum of the Hot-Saturn WASP-96 b: Nondetection of Haze, Possible Sodium Limb Asymmetry, Stellar Characterization, and Formation History
We present transmission spectroscopy of the warm Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b made with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS2) across the wavelength range 411-810nm. The transit depth is measured with a typical precision of 240 parts per million (ppm) in wavelength bins of 10nm on a V = 12.1 magnitude star. We detect the sodium absorption feature (3.2-sigma) and find evidence for potassium. The ground-based transmission spectrum is consistent with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical spectroscopy, strengthening the interpretation of WASP-39b having a largely cl…

High-resolution spectroscopy studies of ultra-hot Jupiters have been key in our understanding of exoplanet atmospheres. Observing into the atmospheres of these giant planets allows for direct constraints on their atmospheric compositions and dynamics while laying the groundwork for new research regarding their formation and evolution environments. Two of the most well-studied ultra-hot Jupiters are WASP-76b and WASP-121b, with multiple detected chemical species and strong signatures of their atmospheric dynamics. We take a new look at these two exceptional ultra-hot Jupiters by reanalyzing the…
Transmission spectroscopy is a prime technique to study the chemical composition and structure of exoplanetary atmospheres. Strong excess absorption signals have been detected in the optical Na I D1, 2 Fraunhofer lines during transits of hot Jupiters, which are attributed to the planetary atmospheres and allow us to constrain its structure. We study the atmosphere of WASP-7 b by means of high-resolution transit spectroscopy in the sodium lines. We analyzed a spectral transit time series of 89 high-resolution spectra of the hot Jupiter WASP-7 b that was observed using the Ultraviolet and Visual…
We present new analysis of infrared transmission spectroscopy of the cloud-free hot-Saturn WASP-96b performed with the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes (HST and Spitzer). The WASP-96b spectrum exhibits the absorption feature from water in excellent agreement with synthetic spectra computed assuming a cloud-free atmosphere. The HST-Spitzer spectrum is coupled with Very Large Telescope (VLT) optical transmission spectroscopy which reveals the full pressure-broadened profile of the sodium absorption feature and enables the derivation of absolute abundances. We confirm and correct for a spectra…

通过分析 ESPRESSO 和 MAROON-X 的罗斯特-麦克劳林效应观测,发现 WASP-156 b 的轨道是共面的(λ=-8±16°),否定了先前高度倾斜轨道的结论,并更新了系统参数。
Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) present excellent targets for atmospheric characterisation. Their hot dayside temperatures (T $\gtrsim$ 2200 K) strongly suppress the formation of condensates, leading to clear and highly-inflated atmospheres extremely conducive to transmission spectroscopy. Recent studies using optical high-resolution spectra have discovered a plethora of neutral and ionised atomic species in UHJs, placing constraints on their atmospheric structure and composition. Our recent work has presented a search for molecular features and detection of Fe I in the UHJ WASP-121b using VLT/UVES …

We have measured the transmission spectrum of the extremely inflated hot Jupiter WASP-52b using simultaneous photometric observations in SDSS u', g' and a filter centred on the sodium doublet (NaI) with the ULTRACAM instrument mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. We find that Rayleigh scattering is not the dominant source of opacity within the planetary atmosphere and find a transmission spectrum more consistent with wavelength-independent opacity such as from clouds. We detect an in-transit anomaly that we attribute to the presence of stellar activity and find that this feature can…
We present HST STIS optical transmission spectroscopy of the cool Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-39b from 0.29-1.025 micron, along with complementary transit observations from Spitzer IRAC at 3.6 and 4.5 micron. The low density and large atmospheric pressure scale height ofWASP-39b make it particularly amenable to atmospheric characterization using this technique. We detect a Rayleigh scattering slope as well as sodium and potassium absorption features; this is the first exoplanet in which both alkali features are clearly detected with the extended wings predicted by cloud-free atmosphere models. …
