We show that final state interactions (FSI) within a CPT invariant two-channel framework can enhance the charge-parity (CP) violation difference between $D^0\toπ^-π^+$ and $D^0\to K^-K^+$ decays up to the current experimental value. This result relies upon: (i) the dominant tree level diagram, (ii) the well-known experimental values for the $D^ 0\toπ^-π^+$ and $D^ 0\to K^-K^+$ branching ratios, and (iii) the $ππ\to ππ$ and $ππ\to K K $ scattering data to extract the strong phase difference and inelasticity. Based on well-grounded theoretical properties, we find the sign and bulk value of the $ΔA_{CP}$ and $A_{CP}(D^0 \to π^-π^+)$ recently observed by the LHCb Collaboration.
We study the effects of models with a warped extra dimension on rare charm decays. While the new degrees of freedom in these models are bounded above a few TeV, they can leave signatures in rare charm decays with their tiny Standard Model background. We look at several channels with leptons in the final state along with several asymmetries of both kinematical and dynamical nature. CPT invariance is `usable' for analyzing the impacts of new dynamics in $D$ meson decays and in particular, rare decays of charm mesons.
We find a new $CP$-violation effect in charm decays into neutral kaons, which results from the interference between two tree (Cabibbo-favored and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed) amplitudes with the mixing of final-state mesons. This effect, estimated to be of an order of $10^{-3}$, is much larger than the direct $CP$ asymmetries in these decays, but missed in the literature. It can be revealed by measuring the difference of the time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in the $D^{+}\toπ^{+}K_S^0$ and $D_{s}^{+}\to K^{+} K_S^0$ modes, which are accessible at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. If confirmed, th…
We propose a theoretical framework to understand the observable charge-parity (CP) violation in charmless three-body $B^\pm$ decays. The decay amplitudes put together the $ππ\to KK $ re-scattering and the U-spin symmetry, treated within a CPT invariant framework. This approach applied to a two-channel model provides the magnitudes and signs of the ratios of the global CP asymmetries for $B^\pm \to K^\pm π^+ π^- \,$, $B^\pm \to K^\pm K^+ K^- \,$, $B^\pm \to π^\pm K^+ K^- \,$ and $B^\pm \to π^\pm π^+π^- \,$ decays, compatible with those obtained from the available experimental data. In addition,…
The forward-backward asymmetry A_{FB}^t in top quark production at the Tevatron has been seen to be anomalously large both by CDF and D0. Parton-level asymmetries as large as 50%, with a large error bar, have been extracted from the data. It is important to measure other quark asymmetries if possible, as these would help clarify the source of any new physics behind A_{FB}^t. In this note it is argued that asymmetries in b\bar b and c\bar c should be accessible to the Tevatron experiments, using the full data sets. A crude study suggests that muon asymmetries in high-p_T dijet events, with suit…
We analyze patterns from CP-violating new physics (NP) in hadronic and semileptonic rare charm $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu\vert=1$ transitions. Observation of direct CP-violation in hadronic decays, as in $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$, provides opportunities for $c \to u \,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ$ transitions, and vice versa. For the concrete case of flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$-models a NP-interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$ suggests measurable CP-asymmetries in semileptonic decays such as $D \to π\, \ell^+ \ell^-$ or $D \to ππ\, \ell^+ \ell^-$. Conversely, an observation of CP-violation in $c \to u\,…
The LHCb collaboration has recently performed a first measurement of the angular production asymmetry in the distribution of beauty quarks and anti-quarks at a hadron collider. We calculate the corresponding standard model prediction for this asymmetry at fixed-order in perturbation theory. Our results show good agreement with the data, which is provided differentially for three bins in the invariant mass of the $b \bar b$ system. We also present similar predictions for both beauty-quark and charm-quark final states within the LHCb acceptance for a collision energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm Te…
The CKM paradigm has been tested thoroughly over the last 40 years in both the neutral $K$ and $B$ systems. The recent discovery of neutral charm meson mixing has prompted the search for CP violation in $D$ decays. We discuss the prospects of performing time-dependent CP asymmetry measurements at facilities either taking data or under construction. Such measurements can (i) provide precision determinations of the charm mixing phase, and (ii) be used to probe for possible new physics effects (and perhaps ultimately constrain the CKM paradigm). We propose the use of the time-dependent asymmetry …
With the first evidence of direct CP violation in $D^0 \to K^+K^-/π^+π^-$ there is a strong reason to probe CP asymmetries in charm baryons in three-body final states $Λ_c \to pπ^+π^-/pK^+K^-$ & $Λ_c \to pK^+π^-$ with $Λ_c \to pK^-π^+$ to calibrate them. Analyzing the Dalitz plots carefully allows to find the 'existence' of New Dynamics (ND) and its `features'. One can test different methods to probe CP asymmetries. Final data from CDF and D0 experiments have advantage by comparing $Λ_c $ with $\bar Λ_c $ directly from $p \bar p $ collisions. LHCb will need more data with $\bar Λ_c$ transition…
Angular distribution of the final particles in the decay $Λ_c^+\to K^- \, Δ(1232)^{++} \to K^- \, p \, π^+$ of the polarized charmed baryon is discussed. Asymmetries are proposed which allow for determination of the components of the $Λ_c^+$ polarization vector. The precession angle of the polarization in the process of baryon channeling in a bent crystal is directly related to these asymmetries. The decay rate and asymmetry parameter for the $Λ_c^+\to K^- \, Δ(1232)^{++}$ decay are calculated in the pole model and compared with experiment.
We propose for the first time a method to perform analysis of time-dependent CP asymmetries in charm by using both, correlated and un-correlated $D^0$ mesons. Here we consider the decay channels $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+ π^-$. The channel $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ will be used to measure the mixing phase, and the difference between the measured phase $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+ π^-$ will open the door to the first measurement of $β_c$, one of the angle of the charm unitarity triangle. Since in the standard model CP asymmetries in charm are expected to be small, any observation of large time…
Our community has focused on two-body final states in $B$ & $D$ decays. The SM produces at least the leading source of CP violation in $B$ transitions, none has been established yet in charm decays. It is crucial to measure three- and four-body FS with accuracy and to compare with predictions based on refined theoretical tools. Correlations between different final states (FS) based on CPT invariance are often not obvious, how to apply them and where. We have to probe regional asymmetries and use refined parametrization of the CKM matrix. One uses (broken) U- & V-spin symmetries for spectroscop…
We study the $K^0_S-K^0_L$ asymmetries and $CP$ violations in charm-baryon decays with neutral kaons in the final state. The $K^0_S-K^0_L$ asymmetry can be used to search for two-body doubly Cabibbo-suppressed amplitudes of charm-baryon decays, with the one in $Λ^+_c\to pK^0_{S,L}$ as a promising observable. Besides, it is studied for a new $CP$-violation effect in these processes, induced by the interference between the Cabibbo-favored and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed amplitudes with the neutral kaon mixing. Once the new CP-violation effect is determined by experiments, the direct $CP$ asymmetry…
We report a measurement of the difference (Delta Acp) between time-integrated CP--violating asymmetries in D0-> K+ K- and D0-> pi+pi- decays reconstructed in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The strong decay D*+->D0 pi+ is used to identify the charm meson at production as D0 or anti-D0. We measure Delta Acp = [-0.62 +- 0.21 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst)] %, which differs from zero by 2.7 Gaussian standard deviations. This result supports similar evidence for CP violation in charm-quark d…
The measurement of time-dependent CP asymmetries in charm decays can provide a unique insight into the flavor changing structure of the Standard Model. We examine a number of different CP eigenstate decays of D mesons and describe a method that can be used to measure time-dependent CP asymmetries at existing and future experiments, with a preliminary assessment, based on statistical considerations, of their various capabilities. Any asymmetry observed in time-dependent analysis of neutral D mesons could signify new physics. We discuss the measurements required to perform direct and indirect te…
We perform a comprehensive SU(3)-flavor analysis of charmed mesons decaying to two pseudoscalar SU(3)-octet mesons. Taking into account SU(3)-breaking effects induced by the splitting of the quark masses, m_s != m_{u,d}, we find that existing data can be described by SU(3)-breaking of the order 30%. The requisite penguin enhancement to accomodate all data on CP violation tends to be even larger than the one extracted from Delta a_{CP}^{dir}(K^+K^-,pi^+pi^-) alone, strengthening explanations beyond the standard model. Despite the large number of matrix elements, correlations between CP asymmetr…
We discuss some new aspects of charm production trigerred by recent observations of the LHCb collaboration. The LHCb collaboration measured small asymmetries in production of $D^+ D^-$ mesons as well as $D_s^+ D_s^-$ mesons. Is this related to initial quark/antiquark asymmetries in the proton ? Here we discuss a scenario in which unfavored fragmentations $q/{\bar q} \to D$ and $s/{\bar s} \to D_s$ are responsible for the asymmetries. We fix the strength of such fragmentations -- transition probabilities, by adjusting to the size of the LHCb asymmetries. This has consequences for production of …
Recent evidence for direct CP violation in non-leptonic charm decays cannot be easily accommodated within the Standard Model (SM). On the other hand, it fits well in new physics models generating CP violating Delta C=1 chromomagnetic dipole operators. We show that in these frameworks sizable direct CP asymmetries in radiative D to P+ P- gamma decays (P=pi,K), with M_PP close to the rho or the phi peak, can be expected. Enhanced matrix elements of the electromagnetic dipole operators can partly compensate the long distance dominance in these decays, leading to CP asymmetries of the order of sev…
We find new sum rules between direct CP asymmetries in $D$ meson decays with coefficients that can be determined from a global fit to branching ratio data. Our sum rules eliminate the penguin topologies $P$ and $PA$, which cannot be determined from branching ratios. In this way we can make predictions about direct CP asymmetries in the standard model without ad hoc assumptions on the sizes of penguin diagrams. We consistently include first-order SU(3)$_F$ breaking in the topological amplitudes extracted from the branching ratios. By confronting our sum rules with future precise data from LHCb …
Various new measurements in charmless $B_{u,d,s}\to PP$ modes, where $P$ is a low lying pseudoscalar meson, are reported by Belle and LHCb. These include the rates of $B^0\toπ^0π^0$, $ηπ^0$, $B_s\toη'η'$, $B^0\to K^+K^-$ and $B^0_s\toπ^+π^-$ decays. Some of these modes are highly suppressed and are among the rarest $B$ decays. Direct CP asymmetries on various modes are constantly updated. It is well known that direct CP asymmetries and rates of suppressed modes are sensitive to final state interaction (FSI). As new measurements are reported and more data will be collected, it is interesting an…
I discuss hadronic decays of $D$ mesons with emphasis on the recent discovery of charm CP violation in $D^0\to K^+K^-,π^+π^-$ decays. The measured difference $Δa_{CP} \, \equiv \; a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrow K^+K^-) - a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}(D^0\rightarrowπ^+π^-) = \; (-15.4\pm 2.9)\cdot 10^{-4}$ of two direct CP asymmetries exceeds the SM prediction by a factor of 7. A possible explanation is an enhancement of the penguin amplitude entering $ a_{CP}^{\mathrm{dir}}$ by QCD effects which are not understood yet. Alternatively, $Δa_{CP}$ could be dominated by contributions from new physics…
The study of local \cp \ asymmetry in Dalitz plots of charm (& beauty) decays gives us more information about the underlying dynamics than the ratio between total rates. In this paper we explore the consequences of the constraint from \cpt \ symmetry with emphasis on three-body $D$ decays. We show simulations of $D^{\pm} \to π^{\pm}K^+K^-$ and discuss correlations with measured $D^{\pm} \to π^{\pm}π^+ π^-$. There are important comments about analysies of recent LHCb data in \cp\ asymmetries for $B^{\pm}$ decays to three-body final states.
We present standard model (SM) estimates for exclusive $c \to u γ$ processes in heavy quark and hybrid frameworks. Measured branching ratios ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to (ϕ, \bar K^{*0}) γ)$ are at or somewhat exceeding the upper range of the SM and suggest slow convergence of the $1/m_D, α_s$-expansion. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ dipole operators from ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to ρ^0 γ)$ data are obtained. Predictions and implications for leptoquark models are worked out. While branching ratios are SM-like CP asymmetries $\lesssim 10 \%$ can be induced. In SUSY deviations from the SM can be e…
Recently observed increase of direct CP asymmetry in charm meson nonleptonic decays is difficult to explain within the SM. If this effect is induced by new physics, this might be investigated in other charm processes. We propose to investigate new CP violating effects in rare decays $D \to P \ell^+ \ell^-$, which arise due to the interference of resonant part of the long distance contribution and the new physics affected short distance contribution. Performing a model independent analysis, we identify as appropriate observables the differential direct CP asymmetry and partial decay width CP as…
There is a long way from `accuracy' to `precision' about {\bf CP} asymmetries in the decays of beauty \& charm hadrons. (a) We have to apply consistent parametrization of the CKM matrix. (b) Probing many-body final states (FS) is {\em not} a back-up for understanding the underlying forces; to be realistic we can hardly go beyond four-body FS. (c) Broken U-spin symmetry is a good tools to describe spectroscopy of hadrons. However the landscape is very different for weak transitions; the connection of U- \& V-spin symmetries are important. We have to understand the differences between Penguin {\e…
In this talk we briefly present a flavor-SU(3) technique to study branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries $D$-meson decays. The first part of the talk is meant to set up a foundation, based on previous work, to deal with flavor-SU(3) amplitudes and relative strong phases. In addition, we present a model for dealing with SU(3)-breaking in branching ratio measurements of SCS $D^0$ decays. In the second part of the talk we make use of a proposal for an enhanced CP-violating penguin in the SM, to explain the recent LHCb and CDF observations of CP violation in SCS $D^0$ decays. Furthermore, we u…
In view of the recent LHCb measurement of Delta A_CP, the difference between the time-integrated CP asymmetries in D --> K+K- and D --> pi+pi- decays, we perform a comparative study of the possible impact of New Physics degrees of freedom on the direct CP asymmetries in singly Cabibbo suppressed D meson decays. We systematically discuss scenarios with a minimal set of new degrees of freedom that have renormalizable couplings to the SM particles and that are heavy enough such that their effects on the D meson decays can be described by local operators. We take into account both constraints from…
The title of my talk pointed out central statements: the impact of non-perturbative QCD on {\bf CP} asymmetries in many-body FS in charm \& beauty hadrons. For practical reasons one measures first {\bf CP} violation in two-body final states of heavy flavor hadrons. However, those are small parts of charm hadrons and tiny ones for beauty hadrons; therefore one has to probe {\bf CP} asymmetries in three- \& four-body final states. Thus the transitions to the many-body FS basically give information about the underlying dynamics. The impact of non-perturbative QCD on {\bf CP} asymmetries in many-b…
