英文摘要：

Although there has been a dramatically reduction on the prices of capturing devices and an increase on computing power in the last decade, it seems that biometric systems are still far from massive adoption for civilian applications. This paper deals with the causes of this phenomenon, as well as some misconceptions regarding biometric identification.

MAAD-Face: A Massively Annotated Attribute Dataset for Face Images

Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD（弗劳恩霍夫计算机图形学研究所）；Technical University of Darmstadt（达姆施塔特工业大学）

Soft-biometrics play an important role in face biometrics and related fields since these might lead to biased performances, threatens the user's privacy, or are valuable for commercial aspects. Current face databases are specifically constructed for the development of face recognition applications. Consequently, these databases contain large amount of face images but lack in the number of attribute annotations and the overall annotation correctness. In this work, we propose MAADFace, a new face annotations database that is characterized by the large number of its high-quality attribute annotat…

A Competitive Method for Dog Nose-print Re-identification

Nanjing University of Science and Technology（南京理工大学）；DeepBlue Technology Co., Ltd（深兰科技有限公司）；Guangdong University of Technology（广东工业大学）

Vision-based pattern identification (such as face, fingerprint, iris etc.) has been successfully applied in human biometrics for a long history. However, dog nose-print authentication is a challenging problem since the lack of a large amount of labeled data. For that, this paper presents our proposed methods for dog nose-print authentication (Re-ID) task in CVPR 2022 pet biometric challenge. First, considering the problem that each class only with few samples in the training set, we propose an automatic offline data augmentation strategy. Then, for the difference in sample styles between the t…

There is an elephant in the room: Towards a critique on the use of fairness in biometrics

In 2019, the UK's Immigration and Asylum Chamber of the Upper Tribunal dismissed an asylum appeal basing the decision on the output of a biometric system, alongside other discrepancies. The fingerprints of the asylum seeker were found in a biometric database which contradicted the appellant's account. The Tribunal found this evidence unequivocal and denied the asylum claim. Nowadays, the proliferation of biometric systems is shaping public debates around its political, social and ethical implications. Yet whilst concerns towards the racialised use of this technology for migration control have …

Psychophysical Evaluation of Human Performance in Detecting Digital Face Image Manipulations

Hochschule Darmstadt（达姆施塔特应用科学大学）

In recent years, increasing deployment of face recognition technology in security-critical settings, such as border control or law enforcement, has led to considerable interest in the vulnerability of face recognition systems to attacks utilising legitimate documents, which are issued on the basis of digitally manipulated face images. As automated manipulation and attack detection remains a challenging task, conventional processes with human inspectors performing identity verification remain indispensable. These circumstances merit a closer investigation of human capabilities in detecting mani…

Speckle-based optical cryptosystem and its application for human face recognition via deep learning

Hong Kong Polytechnic University（香港理工大学）；Nanyang Technological University（南洋理工大学）；Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences（中国科学院上海光学精密机械研究所）；Beihang University（北京航空航天大学）；Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences（中国科学院自动化研究所）

Face recognition has recently become ubiquitous in many scenes for authentication or security purposes. Meanwhile, there are increasing concerns about the privacy of face images, which are sensitive biometric data that should be carefully protected. Software-based cryptosystems are widely adopted nowadays to encrypt face images, but the security level is limited by insufficient digital secret key length or computing power. Hardware-based optical cryptosystems can generate enormously longer secret keys and enable encryption at light speed, but most reported optical methods, such as double rando…
