Optical frequency combs based on semiconductor lasers are a promising technology for monolithic integration of dual-comb spectrometers. However, the stabilization of the offset frequency fceo remains a challenging feat due the lack of octave-spanning spectra. In a dual-comb configuration, the uncorrelated jitter of the offset frequencies leads to a non-periodic signal resulting in broadened beatnotes with a limited signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Hence, expensive data acquisition schemes and complex signal processing are currently required. Here, we show that the offset frequencies of two frequency combs can be synchronized by optical injection locking, which allows full phase-stabilization when combined with electrical injection. A single comb line isolated via an optical Vernier filter serves as Master oscillator for injection locking. The resulting dual-comb signal is periodic and stable over thousands of periods. This enables coherent averaging using analog electronics, which increases the SNR and reduces the data size by one and three orders of magnitude, respectively. The presented method will enable fully phase-stabilized dual-comb spectrometers by leveraging on integrated optical filters and provides access for measuring and stabilizing fceo.

The phase synchronization of two semiconductor DFB lasers submitted to both frequency-shifted cross-injection and self-feedback is investigated, both numerically and experimentally. A dedicated setup based on monolithic DFB lasers permits to effectively lock the frequency difference of the two lasers on an external reference over a broad range of parameters. In agreement with a delayed rate equation model, it is shown that the sensitivity of the locking to the optical feedback phases is mitigated by using strong cross-injection, thus paving the way to applications for microwave photonics. Othe…
Injection locking is a powerful technique for synchronization of oscillator networks and controlling the phase and frequency of individual oscillators using similar or other types of oscillators. Here, we present the first demonstration of injection locking of a radiation-pressure driven optomechanical oscillator (OMO) via acoustic waves. As opposed to previously reported techniques (based on pump modulation or direct application of a modulated electrostatic force), injection locking of OMO via acoustic waves does not require optical power modulation or physical contact with the OMO and it can…
Optical soliton molecules in ultrafast lasers present striking analogies with their matter molecule counterparts, such as internal vibrations. However, the vibrations of soliton molecules are nonlinear, with frequencies that are sensitive to the system parameters, thus presenting an opportunity of control. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the synchronization of the internal vibrations of self-excited vibrating soliton molecules through a modulated optical injection. We show efficient sub-harmonic, fundamental and super-harmonic synchronization, forming a pattern of Arnold tongues with respe…
The techniques of cavity optomechanics have enabled significant achievements in precision sensing, including the detection of gravitational waves and the cooling of mechanical systems to their quantum ground state. Recently, the inherent non-linearity in the optomechanical interaction has been harnessed to explore synchronization effects, including the spontaneous locking of an oscillator to a reference injection signal delivered via the optical field. Here, we present the first demonstration of a radiation-pressure driven optomechanical system locking to an inertial drive, with actuation prov…
Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature that manifests as the spectral or temporal locking of coupled nonlinear oscillators. In the field of photonics, synchronization has been implemented in various laser and oscillator systems, enabling applications including coherent beam combining and high precision pump-probe measurements. Recent experiments have also shown time-domain synchronization of Kerr frequency combs via coupling of two separate oscillators operating in the dissipative soliton [i.e., anomalous group-velocity dispersion (GVD)] regime. Here, we demonstrate all-optical s…
The two-frequency problem of synchronization of the pulse train of a passively mode locked soliton laser to an externally injected pulse train is solved in the weak injection regime. The source and target frequency combs are distinguished by the spacing and offset frequency mismatches. Locking diagrams map the domain in the mismatch parameter space where stable locking of the combs is possible. We analyze the dependence of the locking behavior on the relative frequency and chirp of the source and target pulses, and the conditions where the relative offset frequency has to be actively stabilize…
The phenomenon of synchronization occurs universally across the natural sciences and provides critical insight into the behavior of coupled nonlinear dynamical systems. It also offers a powerful approach to robust frequency or temporal locking in diverse applications including communications, superconductors, and photonics. Here we report the experimental synchronization of two coupled soliton modelocked chip-based frequency combs separated over distances of 20 m. We show that such a system obeys the universal Kuramoto model for synchronization and that the cavity solitons from the microresona…
Pulsed driving of Kerr microresonators represents a promising avenue for the efficient generation of soliton states associated with coherent optical frequency combs. The underlying physics has not, however, yet been comprehensively investigated. Here, we report on a numerical and theoretical study of the impact of de-synchronization between the periodic pump field and the train of solitons circulating in the cavity. We show that de-synchronization can affect the soliton configurations that can be sustained for given parameters, and that it can be leveraged to guarantee operation in the attract…
We present detailed numerical simulations of the laser dynamics that describe optical frequency comb formation by injection-locking a gain-switched laser. The typical rate equations for semiconductor lasers including stochastic carrier recombination and spontaneous emission suffice to show the injection-locking behavior of gain switched lasers, and we show how the optical frequency comb evolves starting from the free-running state, right through the final injection- locked state. Unlike the locking of continuous wave lasers, we show that the locking range for gain switched lasers is considerab…
Coupled clocks are a classic example of a synchronization system leading to periodic collective oscillations. This phenomenon already attracted the attention of Christian Huygens back in 1665,who described it as a kind of "sympathy" among oscillators. In this work we describe the formation of two types of laser frequency combs as a system of oscillators coupled through the beating of the lasing modes. We experimentally show two completely different types of synchronizations in a quantum dot laser { in-phase and splay states. Both states can be generated in the same device, just by varying the …
Quantum cascade laser (QCL) frequency combs are a promising candidate for chemical sensing and biomedical diagnostics, requiring only milliseconds of acquisition time to record absorption spectra without any moving parts. They are electrically pumped and have a small footprint, making them an ideal platform for on-chip integration. Until now, optical feedback is fatal for frequency comb generation in QCLs and destroys intermodal coherence. This property imposes strict limits on the possible degree of integration. Here, we demonstrate coherent injection locking of the repetition frequency to a …
Microresonator-based optical frequency combs have been a topic of extensive research during the last few years. Several theoretical models for the comb generation have been proposed; however, they do not comprehensively address experimental results that show a variety of independent comb generation mechanisms. Here, we present frequency-domain experiments that illuminate the transition of microcombs into phase-locked states, which show characteristics of injection locking between ensembles of comb modes. In addition, we demonstrate the existence of equidistant optical frequency combs that are …
We experimentally observed self-injection locking regime of the gain-switched laser to high-Q optical microresonator. We revealed that comb generated by the gain-switched laser experiences a dramatic reduce of comb teeth linewidths in this regime. We demonstrated the Lorentzian linewidth of the comb teeth of sub-kHz scale as narrow as for non-switched self-injection locked laser. Such setup allows generation of high-contrast electrically-tunable optical frequency combs with tunable comb line spacing in a wide range from 10 kHz up to 10 GHz. The characteristics of the generated combs were studi…

We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that a slave laser injected with an optical frequency comb can undergo two distinct locking mechanisms, both of which decrease the output optical comb's frequency spacing. We report that, for certain detuning and relative injection strengths, slave laser relaxation oscillations can become undamped and lock to rational frequencies of the optical comb spacing, creating extra comb tones by nonlinear dynamics of the injected laser. We also study the frequency locking of the slave laser in between the injected comb lines, which add the slave laser's f…

In this paper, we present an experimental study of the metrological stabilization of a solid-state frequency comb for embedded metrology applications. The comb is a passively mode-locked laser diode based on InGaAs/InP Quantum-dash structure emitting optical lines into a 9 nm bandwidth centered at 1.55 $μ$m with a repetition rate of 10.09 GHz. The frequency stabilization is achieved by optical injection locking of the comb with an external cavity laser diode referenced onto a metrological frequency standard. One observes the transfer of the spectral purity from the injection laser to the neigh…

Optical injection locking is implemented to faithfully transfer the phase noise of a dissipative Kerr microresonator soliton comb in addition to the amplification of the Kerr comb. Unlike Er-doped fiber and semiconductor optical amplifiers, the optical injection locking amplifies the comb mode without degrading the optical signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we show that the residual phase noise of the optical injection locking is sufficiently small to transfer the relative phase noise of comb modes (equivalent to the repetition frequency) of low phase noise Kerr combs, concluding that the opt…
We propose a simple approach to implement a tunable, high power and narrow linewidth laser source based on a series of highly coherent tones from an electro-optic frequency comb and a set of 3 DFB slave lasers. We experimentally demonstrate approximately 1.25 THz (10 nm) of tuning within the C-Band centered at 192.9 THz (1555 nm). The output power is approximately 100 mW (20 dBm), with a side band suppression ratio greater than 55 dB, and a linewidth below 400 Hz across the full range of tunability. This approach is scalable and may be extended to cover a significantly broader optical spectral…
Carrier conversion from terahertz wave to dual-wavelength near-infrared light injection-locking to optical comb using asynchronous nonpolarimetric electro-optic downconversion with electro-optic polymer modulator
Using a discrete mode approach we investigate the intermodal dynamics in a frequency comb with nonlinear coupling due to four-wave mixing. In the presence of sufficient saturable absorption, phase space collapses into a single state, and all modes tightly lock with identical phase. In case of a purely reactive nonlinearity, a less constrained locking mechanism emerges, which keeps phase differences of neighboring modes loosely bounded and leads to the formation of quasi-periodic breathers. Analysis of the underlying nonlinear correlations identifies a chaotic synchronization process as the ori…
Broadband dual-comb spectroscopy has attracted increasing interests due to its unique advantages in high spectral resolution, fast detection, and so on. Although the dual-comb technique is relatively mature in the infrared wavelengths, it is, currently, not commercially capable of practical applications in the terahertz regime due to the lack of high performance broadband terahertz dual-comb sources. In the terahertz frequency range, the electrically pumped quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a suitable candidate for the dual-comb operation. However, free running terahertz QCL dual-comb sources nor…
We present homogeneous quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting around 3 THz which display bandwidths up to 950 GHz with a single stable beatnote. Devices are spontaneously operating in a harmonic comb state, and when in a dense mode regime they can be injection locked at the cavity roundtrip frequency with very small RF powers down to -55 dBm. When operated in the electrically unstable region of negative differential resistance, the device displays ultra-broadband operation exceeding 1.83 THz ($Δf/f=50\%$) with high phase noise, exhibiting self-sustained, periodic voltage oscillations. The low …
We developed an original model describing the process of the frequency comb generation in the self-injection locking regime and performed numerical simulation of this process.Generation of the dissipative Kerr solitons in the self-injection locking regime at anomalous group velocity dispersion was studied numerically. Different regimes of the soliton excitation depending on the locking phase, backscattering parameter and pump power were identified. It was also proposed and confirmed numerically that self-injection locking may provide an easy way for the generation of the frequency combs at nor…

We use two fiber-based femtosecond frequency combs and a low-noise carrier suppression phase detection system to characterize the optical to microwave synchronization achievable with such frequency divider systems. By applying specific noise reduction strategies, a residual phase noise as low as -120 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset frequency from a 11.55 GHz carrier is measured. The fractional frequency instability from a single optical-to-frequency divider is 1.1E-16 at 1 s averaging down to below 2E-19 after only 1000 s. The corresponding rms time deviation is lower than 100 attoseconds up to 1000 s a…
