Training convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with back-propagation (BP) is time-consuming and resource-intensive particularly in view of the need to visit the dataset multiple times. In contrast, analytic learning attempts to obtain the weights in one epoch. However, existing attempts to analytic learning considered only the multilayer perceptron (MLP). In this article, we propose an analytic convolutional neural network learning (ACnnL). Theoretically we show that ACnnL builds a closed-form solution similar to its MLP counterpart, but differs in their regularization constraints. Consequently, we are able to answer to a certain extent why CNNs usually generalize better than MLPs from the implicit regularization point of view. The ACnnL is validated by conducting classification tasks on several benchmark datasets. It is encouraging that the ACnnL trains CNNs in a significantly fast manner with reasonably close prediction accuracies to those using BP. Moreover, our experiments disclose a unique advantage of ACnnL under the small-sample scenario when training data are scarce or expensive.
A major barrier to the personalized Human Activity Recognition using wearable sensors is that the performance of the recognition model drops significantly upon adoption of the system by new users or changes in physical/ behavioral status of users. Therefore, the model needs to be retrained by collecting new labeled data in the new context. In this study, we develop a transfer learning framework using convolutional neural networks to build a personalized activity recognition model with minimal user supervision.
Convolutional neural networks have become a popular research in the field of finger vein recognition because of their powerful image feature representation. However, most researchers focus on improving the performance of the network by increasing the CNN depth and width, which often requires high computational effort. Moreover, we can notice that not only the importance of pixels in different channels is different, but also the importance of pixels in different positions of the same channel is different. To reduce the computational effort and to take into account the different importance of pi…

Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks (CRNNs) excel at scene text recognition. Unfortunately, they are likely to suffer from vanishing/exploding gradient problems when processing long text images, which are commonly found in scanned documents. This poses a major challenge to goal of completely solving Optical Character Recognition (OCR) problem. Inspired by recently proposed memory-augmented neural networks (MANNs) for long-term sequential modeling, we present a new architecture dubbed Convolutional Multi-way Associative Memory (CMAM) to tackle the limitation of current CRNNs. By leveraging …
Face recognition has been an active research area in the past few decades. In general, face recognition can be very challenging due to variations in viewpoint, illumination, facial expression, etc. Therefore it is essential to extract features which are invariant to some or all of these variations. Here a new image representation, called scattering transform/network, has been used to extract features from faces. The scattering transform is a kind of convolutional network which provides a powerful multi-layer representation for signals. After extraction of scattering features, PCA is applied to…

This paper proposes a new graph convolutional operator called central difference graph convolution (CDGC) for skeleton based action recognition. It is not only able to aggregate node information like a vanilla graph convolutional operation but also gradient information. Without introducing any additional parameters, CDGC can replace vanilla graph convolution in any existing Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs). In addition, an accelerated version of the CDGC is developed which greatly improves the speed of training. Experiments on two popular large-scale datasets NTU RGB+D 60 & 120 have demonst…

To this end, we propose a data-efficient, end-to-end neural network model for generic, unconstrained text recognition. In our proposed architecture we strive for simplicity and efficiency without sacrificing recognition a…

Existing methods capture the structure with the sequence-to-sequence models by an encoder to have the visual representations and then a decoder to translate the features into the label sequence. In this paper, we study text recognition framework by considering the long-term temporal dependencies in the encoder stage. We demonstrate that the proposed Temporal Convolutional Encoder with increased sequential extents improves the accuracy of text recognition. We also study the impact of…

Human action recognition is one of the challenging tasks in computer vision. The current action recognition methods use computationally expensive models for learning spatio-temporal dependencies of the action. Models utilizing RGB channels and optical flow separately, models using a two-stream fusion technique, and models consisting of both convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory (LSTM) network are few examples of such complex models. Moreover, fine-tuning such complex models is computationally expensive as well. This paper proposes a deep neural network architecture for …

This paper investigates body bones from skeleton data for skeleton based action recognition. Body joints, as the direct result of mature pose estimation technologies, are always the key concerns of traditional action recognition methods. However, instead of joints, we humans naturally identify how the human body moves according to shapes, lengths and places of bones, which are more obvious and stable for observation. Hence given graphs generated from skeleton data, we propose to develop convolutions over graph edges that correspond to bones in human skeleton. We describe an edge by integrating…
Learning graph convolutional networks (GCNs) is an emerging field which aims at generalizing convolutional operations to arbitrary non-regular domains. In particular, GCNs operating on spatial domains show superior performances compared to spectral ones, however their success is highly dependent on how the topology of input graphs is defined. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for graph convolutional networks that learns the topological properties of graphs. The design principle of our method is based on the optimization of a constrained objective function which learns not only the …

This paper investigates the problem of aerial vehicle recognition using a text-guided deep convolutional neural network classifier. The network receives an aerial image and a desired class, and makes a yes or no output by matching the image and the textual description of the desired class. We train and test our model on a synthetic aerial dataset and our desired classes consist of the combination of the class types and colors of the vehicles. This strategy helps when considering more classes in testing than in training.

Additional sensor measurements are incorporated into the graph representation, either on a channel dimension (introducing additional node attributes) or spatial dimension (introducing new …
Face identification/recognition has significantly advanced over the past years. However, most of the proposed approaches rely on static RGB frames and on neutral facial expressions. This has two disadvantages. First, important facial shape cues are ignored. Second, facial deformations due to expressions can have an impact on the performance of such a method. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for dynamic 3D face identification/recognition based on facial keypoints. Each dynamic sequence of facial expressions is represented as a spatio-temporal graph, which is constructed using 3D faci…

However, the existing methods only focus on the construction of spatial topology and ignore the time-point dependence. This paper proposes a dynamic spatial-temporal hypergraph convolutional network (DST-HCN) to capture spatial-temporal information for skeleton-based action recognition. DST-HCN introduces a time-point hypergraph (TPH) to learn relationships at time points. With multiple spatial static hypergraphs and dy…

Gait recognition is a promising video-based biometric for identifying individual walking patterns from a long distance. At present, most gait recognition methods use silhouette images to represent a person in each frame. However, silhouette images can lose fine-grained spatial information, and most papers do not regard how to obtain these silhouettes in complex scenes. Furthermore, silhouette images contain not only gait features but also other visual clues that can be recognized. Hence these approaches can not be considered as strict gait recognition.
