Some of the issues associated with the practical applications of consensus of multi-agent systems (MAS) include switching topologies, attrition and inclusion of agents from an existing network, and model uncertainties of agents. In this paper, a single distributed dynamic state-feedback protocol referred to as the Robust Attrition-Inclusion Distributed Dynamic (RAIDD) consensus protocol, is synthesized for achieving the consensus of MAS with attrition and inclusion of linear time-invariant higher-order uncertain homogeneous agents and switching topologies. A state consensus problem termed as the Robust Attrition-Inclusion (RAI) consensus problem is formulated to find this RAIDD consensus protocol. To solve this RAI consensus problem, first, the sufficient condition for the existence of the RAIDD protocol is obtained using the $ν$-gap metric-based simultaneous stabilization approach. Next, the RAIDD consensus protocol is attained using the Glover-McFarlane robust stabilization method if the sufficient condition is satisfied. The performance of this RAIDD protocol is validated by numerical simulations.
We address the problems of bearing-only consensus and formation control, where each agent can only measure the relative bearings of its neighbors and relative distances are not available. We provide stability results for the Filippov solutions of two gradient-descent laws from non-smooth Lyapunov functions in the context of differential inclusion. For the consensus and formation control problems with undirected sensing topologies, we prove finite-time and asymptotic convergence of the proposed non-smooth gradient flows. For the directed consensus problem, we prove asymptotic convergence using …
The existing cryptosystem based approaches for privacy-preserving consensus of networked systems are usually limited to those with undirected topologies. This paper proposes a new privacy-preserving algorithm for networked systems with directed topologies to reach confidential consensus. As a prerequisite for applying the algorithm, a structural consensus problem is formulated and the solvability conditions are discussed for an explicitly constructed controller. The controller is then implemented with encryption to achieve consensus while avoiding individual's information leakage to external e…

This paper addresses the robust consensus problem under switching topologies. Contrary to existing methods, the proposed approach provides decentralized protocols that achieve consensus for networked multi-agent systems in a predefined time. Namely, the protocol design provides a tuning parameter that allows setting the convergence time of the agents to a consensus state. An appropriate Lyapunov analysis exposes the capability of the current proposal to achieve predefined-time consensus over switching topologies despite the presence of bounded perturbations. Finally, the paper presents a compa…

In this article, we present a finite time stopping criterion for consensus algorithms in networks with dynamic communication topology. Recent results provide asymptotic convergence to the consensus algorithm. However, the asymptotic convergence of these algorithms pose a challenge in the practical settings where the response from agents is required in finite time. To this end, we propose a Maximum-Minimum protocol which propagates the global maximum and minimum values of agent states (while running consensus algorithm) in the network. We establish that global maximum and minimum values are str…
This paper investigates the distributed event-based consensus problem of switching networks satisfying the jointly connected condition. Both the state consensus of homogeneous linear networks and output consensus of heterogeneous networks are studied. Two kinds of event-based protocols based on local sampled information are designed, without the need to solve any matrix equation or inequality. Theoretical analysis indicates that the proposed event-based protocols guarantee the achievement of consensus and the exclusion of Zeno behaviors for jointly connected undirected switching graphs. These …
The current paper deals with limited-budget output consensus for descriptor multiagent systems with two types of switching communication topologies; that is, switching connected ones and jointly connected ones. Firstly, a singular dynamic output feedback control protocol with switching communication topologies is proposed on the basis of the observable decomposition, where an energy constraint is involved and protocol states of neighboring agents are utilized to derive a new two-step design approach of gain matrices. Then, limited-budget output consensus problems are transformed into asymptoti…

This work addresses the synchronization/consensus problem of identical multi-agent system (MAS) where the agents' dynamics are linear and the communication network is arbitrarily switching among connected topologies. The approach uses a gain matrix of a special structure in a dynamic compensator for each agent. Under reasonable conditions, the approach ensures that consensus is reached when the gain is sufficiently large. This result holds for general linear systems including the case where agents have repeated unstable eigenvalues. The proposed controller structure can be seen as a special ca…
Time-varying hierarchical multi-agent systems are common in many applications. A well-known solution to control these systems is to use state feedback controllers that depend on the adjacency matrix to reach consensus. This solution has been applied so far to multi-agent systems with fixed or time-varying communication topologies. In this paper, we consider single-integrator multi-agent systems where only a subset of the agents are active at any given time and the set of active agents is time-varying. This type of multi-agent system is relevant in applications such as modular multilevel conver…
In this brief paper, a new consensus protocol based on the sign of innovations is proposed. Based on this protocol each agent only requires single-bit of information about its relative state to its neighboring agents. This is significant in real-time applications, since it requires less computation and/or communication load on agents. Using Lyapunov stability theorem the convergence is proved for networks having a spanning tree. Further, the convergence is shown to be in finite-time, which is significant as compared to most asymptotic protocols in the literature. Time-variant network topologie…
We propose predefined-time consensus-based cooperative guidance laws for a swarm of interceptors to simultaneously capture a target capable of executing various kinds of motions. Unlike leader-follower cooperative guidance techniques, the swarm of interceptors has no leader and each interceptor executes its own guidance command in a distributive fashion, thus obviating the residency of the mission over a single interceptor. We first design cooperative guidance commands subject to target's mobility, followed by the same when the target is stationary, and also account for interceptors' changing …
This paper proposes two algorithms, namely "back-tracking" and "history following", to reach consensus in case of communication loss for a network of distributed agents with switching topologies. To reach consensus in distributed control, considered communication topology forms a strongly connected graph. The graph is no more strongly connected whenever an agent loses communication.Whenever an agent loses communication, the topology is no more strongly connected. The proposed back-tracking algorithm makes sure that the agent backtracks its position unless the communication is reestablished, an…
This paper presents the distributed pinning consensus solution for nonlinear positive multi-agent systems with nonlinear control input by applying observer-based control protocols. The network topology is considered as a directed and fully connected structure. By considering sector input nonlinearities and various forms of topologies, two kinds of state observers involving standard observer and distributed pinning observer are presented for each regarded nonlinear agent by applying a novel analysis directly dealing with the nonlinear input and nonlinear system dynamics. The measured local outp…
This paper presents new classes of consensus protocols with fixed-time convergence, which enable the definition of an upper bound for consensus state as a parameter of the consensus protocol, ensuring its independence from the initial condition of the nodes. We demonstrate that our methodology subsumes current classes of fixed-time consensus protocols that are based on homogeneous in the bi-limit vector fields. Moreover, the proposed framework enables for the development of independent consensus protocols that are not needed to be homogeneous in the bi-limit. This proposal offers extra degrees…
Motivated by decentralized sensing and policy evaluation problems, we consider a particular type of distributed stochastic optimization problem over a network, called the online stochastic distributed averaging problem. We design a dual-based method for this distributed consensus problem with Polyak--Ruppert averaging and analyze its behavior. We show that the proposed algorithm attains an accelerated deterministic error depending optimally on the condition number of the network, and also that it has an order-optimal stochastic error. This improves on the guarantees of state-of-the-art distrib…
