We report on the successful on-surface synthesis of metal-organic covalent coordination networks with a dense Kagome lattice of metallic centers. In the case of Mn centers ab-initio calculations show that the adsorbed monolayer on Ag(111) has all the characteristic features of a strictly two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic Kagome metal. Tetrahydroxyquinone (THQ) and metal atoms (M=Cu or Mn) are co-deposited on the Ag(111) substrate to build well-ordered 2D lattices M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$. The surface is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to optimize the growth conditions like fluxes and temperatures. The details of the atomic, electronic and magnetic structures are clarified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. XPS and DFT reveal a Cu$^+$ charge state and no local magnetic moments for the Cu-organic network. For the Mn-organic network, we find the charge state Mn$^{2+}$ and a local spin S=5/2. Charge transfer stabilizes the Cu$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$ charge states. We find two different modifications of the M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ lattice. DFT calculations which neglect the small spin-orbit coupling show a Dirac point, i.e. a band crossing with linear electron dispersion at the K-point of the Brillouin zone. This Dirac point is at the Fermi level if there is no charge transfer but drops by 100 meV if electron doping of Cu$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ on Ag(111) surface is acknowledged. We predict the magnetic couplings of an isolated M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ monolayer to be short range and antiferromagnetic leading to high frustration at the Kagome lattice and a tendency towards a spin-liquid ground state. In the case of hole transfer from the substrates ferromagnetic ordering is introduced, making M$_3$C$_6$O$_6$ an interesting candidate for the quantum anomalous Hall effect.
The kagome lattice, whose electronic valence band (VB) structure includes two Dirac bands and one flat band, offers a rich space to realise tuneable topological and strongly correlated electronic phases in two-dimensional (2D) and layered materials. While strong electron correlations have been observed in inorganic kagome crystals, they remain elusive in organic systems. The latter offer versatile synthesis protocols via molecular self-assembly and metal-ligand coordination. Here, we report the synthesis of a 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) where di-cyano-anthracene (DCA) molecules form a kag…
Recently, the superconductivity in a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been discovered for the first time in copper(II) benzenehexathiolate ([Cu$_3$(C$_6$S$_6$)]$_n$, Cu-BHT). The Cu atoms form a two-dimensional perfect Kagome lattice, which has the potential to host a metallic quantum spin liquid state. Here we present high-precision measurements of in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in Cu-BHT films down to 40\,mK. The temperature dependence of $λ$ shows a non-exponential, quasi-linear behavior at low temperatures, suggesting that unconventional superconductivity with low-energy quasipar…
We present the results of first-principle calculations using the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) for a new class of organometallics labeled TM3C6O6 (TM =Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) in the form of planar, two-dimensional, periodic free-standing layers. These materials, which can be produced by on-surface coordination on metallic surfaces, have a kagome lattice of TM ions. Calculating the structural properties, we show that all considered materials have local magnetic moments in the ground state, but four of them (with Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) show spin-crossover behavior by changing …
We design from first principles a new type of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using phenalenyl-based ligands to exhibit a half-filled flat band of the kagome lattice, which is one of the lattice family that shows Lieb-Mielke-Tasaki's flat-band ferromagnetism. Among various MOFs, we find that $\textit{trans}$-Au-THTAP(trihydroxytriaminophenalenyl) has such an ideal band structure, where the Fermi energy is adjusted right at the flat band due to unpaired electrons of radical phenalenyl. The spin-orbit coupling opens a band gap giving a non-zero Chern number to the nearly flat ban…
We investigate the layer localization control of two-dimensional states in multilayer metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). For finite stackings of (NiC4S4)3 MOFs, the weak van der Waals coupling between adjacent layers leads to a Fermi level dependent distribution of the electronic states in the monolayers. Such distribution is reflected in the topological edge states of multilayer nanoribbons. Moreover, by applying an external electric field, parallel to the stacking direction, the spacial localization of the electronic states can be controlled for a chosen Fermi energy. This localization behavio…
The modular nature and unique electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) make them an attractive option for applications in catalysis, optoelectronics, and spintronics. The fabrications of such devices often involve interfaces formed between COFs and substrates. In this work, we employ the first-principles GW approach to accurately determine the quasiparticle electronic structure of three 2D carbonyl bridged heterotriangulene-based COFs featuring kagome lattice, with their properties ranging from a semi-metal to a wide-gap semiconductor. Moreover, we study…
On-surface metal-organic coordination provides a promising way for synthesizing different two-dimensional lattice structures that have been predicted to possess exotic electronic properties. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we studied the supramolecular self-assembly of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) molecules on the Au(111) surface. Close-packed islands of DCA molecules and Au-DCA metal-organic coordination structures coexist on the Au(111) surface. Ordered DCA$_{3}$Au$_{2}$ metal-organic networks have a structure combining a honeycomb lattice of Au atoms with a…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phase is a novel topological state of matter characterized by a nonzero quantized Hall conductivity without an external magnetic field. The realizations of QAH effect, however, are experimentally challengeable. Based on ab initio calculations, here we propose an intrinsic QAH phase in DCA Kagome lattice. The nontrivial topology in Kagome bands are confirmed by the nonzero chern number, quantized Hall conductivity, and gapless chiral edge states of Mn-DCA lattice. A tight-binding (TB) model is further constructed to clarify the origin of QAH effect. Furthermore,…
Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced t…

Metal-organic frameworks comprehend a wide class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials with general structure A$_m$BX$_n$, with $A$ and $X$ being organic molecules and B a metal cation. This often results in enhanced structural flexibility and new functionalities. Hybrid perovskites ABX$_3$ are a well-known example.} In an Iron-based perovskites, (DMA)Fe^{II-III}(COOH)_3, dimethylammonium (DMA) molecules are organized in a hexagonal structure. They are orientationally disordered at high temperatures, but order at around $T=100$~K in a peculiar toroidal pattern. Recent experimental and theoreti…
A systematic variation of the exciton fine-structure splitting with quantum dot size in single InAs/GaAs quantum dots grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition is observed. The splitting increases from -80 to as much as 520 $μ$eV with quantum dot size. A change of sign is reported for small quantum dots. Model calculations within the framework of eight-band k.p theory and the configuration interaction method were performed. Different sources for the fine-structure splitting are discussed, and piezoelectricity is pinpointed as the only effect reproducing the observed trend.
We report on how to grow and control self-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays that show defined and regular gaps between individual nanotubes. For this we use electrochemical anodization of titanium in fluoride containing di-ethylene glycol (DEG) electrolytes, with variations in voltage and water content in the electrolyte. In these specific electrolytes, such nanotubes show a true spacing, i.e. nanotubes are spaced both at top and at bottom in regular intervals, this in contrast to classic nanotubes obtained in other organic electrolytes showing a close-packed organization. We identify critical pa…
The interplay of magnetism and spin-orbit coupling on an Fe kagome lattice in Fe3Sn2 crystal produces a unique band structure leading to an order of magnitude larger anomalous Hall effect than in conventional ferromagnetic metals. In this work, we demonstrate that Fe-Sn nanocrystalline films also exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect, being applicable to magnetic sensors that satisfy both high sensitivity and thermal stability. In the films prepared by a co-sputtering technique at room temperature, the partial development of crystalline lattice order appears as nanocrystals of Fe-Sn kagome lay…
The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials into vertical heterostructures has emerged as a promising path to designer quantum materials with exotic properties. Here, we extend this concept from inorganic 2D materials to 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that offer additional flexibility in realizing designer heterostructures. We successfully fabricate a monolayer 2D Cu-dicyanoanthracene MOF on a 2D van der Waals NbSe$_2$ superconducting substrate. The structural and electronic properties of two different phases of the 2D MOF are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling micro…
We have investigated the energetic stability and the electronic properties of metal-organic topological insulators bilayers (BLs), $(MC_4S_4)_3$-BL, with M=Ni and Pt, using first-principles calculations and tight-binding model. Our findings show that $(MC_4S_4)_3$-BL is an appealing platform to perform electronic band structure engineering, based on the topologically protected chiral edge states. The energetic stability of the BLs is ruled by van der Waals interactions; being the AA stacking the energetically most stable one. The electronic band structure is characterized by a combination of b…
This work describes an innovative concept for the development of organized molecular systems thanks to the template effect of the pre-structured semi-conductive SmSi(111) interface. This substrate was selected because Sm deposition in the submonolayer range leads to a 8x2-reconstruction, which is a well-defined one-dimensional semi-metallic structure. Adsorption of aromatic molecules (1,4-di-(9-ethynyltriptycenyl)-benzene) on SmSi(111)-8x2 and Si(111)-7x7 interfaces has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) and semi-empiri…
Recently, great attention has been paid to the possibility of implementing hybrid electronic devices exploiting the self-assembling properties of single molecules. Impressive progress has been done in this field by using organic molecules and macromolecules. However, the use of biomolecules is of great interest because of their larger size (few nanometers) and of their intrinsic functional properties. Here, we show that electron-transfer proteins, such as the blue copper protein azurin (Az), can be used to fabricate biomolecular electronic devices exploiting their intrinsic redox properties, s…

Metal-polymer nanocomposites have been investigated extensively during the last years due to their interesting functional applications. They are often produced by vapor phase deposition which generally leads to the self-organized formation of spherical metallic nanoparticles in the organic matrix, while nanocolumns are only obtained under very specific conditions. Experiments\cite{Grev+06} have shown that co-evaporation of the metallic and organic components in a simple single-step process can give rise to the formation of ultrahigh-density Fe-Ni-Co nanocolumnar structures embedded in a fluoro…
