Antiferromagnetic and ferro/ferrimagnetic orders are typically exclusive in nature, thus, their co-existence in atomic-scale proximity is expected only in heterostructures. Breaking this paradigm and broadening the range of unconventional magnetic states, we report here on an atomic-scale hybrid spin state, which is stabilized in three-dimensional crystals of the polar antiferromagnet Co$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ by magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the \emph{Co} honeycomb layers and possesses a spontaneous in-plane ferromagnetic moment. Our microscopic spin model, capturing the observed field dependence of the longitudinal and transverse magnetization as well as the magnetoelectric/elastic properties, reveals that this novel spin state is composed of an alternating stacking of antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic honeycomb layers. The strong intra-layer and the weak inter-layer exchange couplings together with competing anisotropies at octahedral and tetrahedral \emph{Co} sites are identified as the key ingredients to stabilize antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic layers in such a close proximity. We show that the proper balance of magnetic interactions can extend the stability range of this hybrid phase down to zero magnetic field. The possibility to realize a layer-by-layer stacking of such distinct spin orders via suitable combinations of microscopic interactions opens a new dimension towards the nanoscale engineering of magnetic states.
We studied structural and magnetic properties of a series of insulating double perovskite compounds, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuRuO$_{6}$ (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 1), representing doping via \textit{A}-site substitution. The end members La$_{2}$CuRuO$_{6}$ and LaSrCuRuO$_{6}$ form in monoclinic structure while the intermediate Sr doped compounds stabilise in triclinic structure. The Cu and Ru ions sit on alternate B-sites of the perovskite lattice with $\sim$15% anti-site defects in the undoped sample while the Sr doped samples show a tendency to higher ordering at B-sites. The undoped (x = 0) compound shows…
Motivated by the recent numerical simulations for doped $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice, we study superconductivity of singlet and triplet pairing on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model. We show that a superconducting state with coexisting spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings is induced by the antiferromagnetic order near half filling. The superconducting state we obtain has a topological phase transition that separates a topologically trivial state and a nontrivial state with Chern number two. Possible experimental realization of such a topological superconductivity is also discussed…
As a model for the B 2pz bands of MgB$_2$, a half-filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice is studied, and a possibility of an antiferromagnetism (AF) at the ground state is examined by Monte Carlo calculations as well as a random phase approximation method. On a single-layer honeycomb lattice, a paramagnetic to AF phase transition occurs at a finite value of the repulsion energy $U_c/t \simeq 3.6$, due to the loss of the density of states at the fermi level. On a layered honeycomb lattice, however, inter-layer hopping term creates a perfect nesting of the fermi surface, and leads the AF wi…
Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed to be a Kitaev-like honeycomb magnet. To assess how close it is to realizing Kitaev quantum spin liquids, we have measured magnetization and specific heat on high-quality single crystals in magnetic fields applied along high-symmetry directions. Small training fields reveal a weak but canonical ferrimagnetic behavior below 27 K, which cannot be explained by the zigzag antiferromagnetic order alone and suggests coexisting Néel-type order of moments canted away from the zigzag chains. Moderate fields in the honeycomb plane suppress the thermal trans…
The semimetal to antiferromagnet quantum phase transition of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has come to the forefront in the context of the proposal that a semimetal to spin liquid transition can occur before the transition to the antiferromagnetic phase. To study the semimetal to antiferromagnet transition, we generalize the two-particle self-consistent (TPSC) approach to the honeycomb lattice (a structure that can be realized in graphene for example). We show that the critical interaction strength where the transition occurs is $U_c/t=3.79\pm 0.01$ quite close to the value $U_c/t…
Motivated by recent experimental study of antiferromagnetic property of honeycomb compound In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$ [Yan \textit{et al.}, PRB \textbf{85}, 085102 (2012)], we explore possible superconductivity and its coexistence with antiferromagnetism. We use the t-t$^\prime$-J model on the honeycomb lattice as our starting point and employ the slave-boson mean-field theory. In the antiferromagnetic normal state, the characteristic doping evolution of Fermi surface shows that only one effective singe band is active, which suggests that the potential pairing symmetry is the time-reversal symme…
Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new 2:1 ordered triple perovskite Sr3CaOs2O9 are reported. The compound crystallizes in P21/c space group and features a unique buckled honeycomb lattice of osmium. It exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a high Neel temperature of 385 K as confirmed by susceptibility, heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements and is electrically insulating. This compound is also the first example of a 2:1 ordered osmate perovskite. Theoretical investigations indicate that Sr3CaOs2O9 features a sizeable antiferromagnetic exchange…
Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, functional renormalization group calculations and mean-field theory, we study the Hubbard model on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer at half-filling as a model system for bilayer graphene. The free bands consisting of two Fermi points with quadratic dispersions lead to a finite density of states at the Fermi level, which triggers an antiferromagnetic instability that spontaneously breaks sublattice and spin rotational symmetry once local Coulomb repulsions are introduced. Our results reveal an inhomogeneous participation of the spin mo…
We present the electronic band structures of states with the same symmetry as the three-sublattice planar antiferromagnetic order of the triangular lattice. Such states can also be defined on the honeycomb lattice provided the spin density waves lie on the bonds. We identify cases which are consistent with observations on twisted bilayer graphene: a correlated insulator with an energy gap, yielding a single doubly-degenerate Fermi surface upon hole doping. We also discuss extensions to metallic states which preserve spin rotation invariance, with fluctuating spin density waves and bulk $\mathb…
A magnetic origin for the honeycomb reconstruction of metallic surfaces with three-fold symmetry like Pb/Ge (111) is proposed. Assuming that the groundstate is an antiferromagnetic insulator over the triangular lattice of adatom sites (Pb), we demonstrate that the former is simultaneously unstable to canting and to a structural distortion if the surface is soft enough. We therefore predict a net magnetization over the reconstructed surface at sufficiently low temperature.
In this paper, based on the mean field approach and random-phase-approximation, we study the magnetic properties of the spinful Haldane model on honeycomb lattice of topological flat band with on-site repulsive Coulomb interaction. We find that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is more stable than ferromagnetic (FM) order at (or near) half-filling; while away from half-filling the phase diagram becomes complex: At large doping, FM order is more stable than AF order due to the flatness of band structure. In particular, we find that at quarter filling case, the system becomes a Q=1$ topological i…
We discuss t-J-U model on a honeycomb monolayer that has the same low-energy description of the kinetic term as graphene bilayer, and in particular study coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconducting correlations that originate from Cooper pairs without phase coherence. We show that the model is relevant for the description of graphene bilayer and that the presence of the d + i d superconducting correlations with antiferromagnetism can lead to quadratic dependence in small magnetic fields of the gap of the effective monolayer consistent with the transport measurements of Velasco et al.…
Due to the interaction between topological defects of an order parameter and underlying fermions, the defects can possess induced fermion numbers, leading to several exotic phenomena of fundamental importance to both condensed matter and high energy physics. One of the intriguing outcome of induced fermion number is the presence of fluctuating competing orders inside the core of topological defect. In this regard, the interaction between fermions and skyrmion excitations of antiferromagnetic phase can have important consequence for understanding the global phase diagrams of many condensed matt…
Antiferromagnetic Order and Magnetic Frustration in the Honeycomb Heavy-Fermion System Ce(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)$_6$Al$_3$: $^{27}$Al and $^{195}$Pt NMR Studies
A novel magnetic ground state is reported for the Hubbard Hamiltonian in strained graphene. When the chemical potential lies close to the Dirac point, the ground state exhibits locally both the Néel and ferromagnetic orders, even for weak Hubbard interaction. Whereas the Néel order parameter remains of the same sign in the entire system, the magnetization at the boundary takes the opposite sign from the bulk. The total magnetization this way vanishes, and the magnetic ground state is globally only an antiferromagnet. This peculiar ordering stems from the nature of the strain-induced single par…
Heavy fermion systems represent a prototypical setting to study magnetic quantum phase transitions. A particular focus has been on the physics of Kondo destruction, which captures quantum criticality beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In this context, we study the spin one-half Kondo-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice at half filling. The problem is approached from the Kondo destroyed, antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase. We describe the local moments in terms of a coarse grained quantum non-linear sigma model, and show that the skyrmion defects of the…
The complexity of the antiferromagnetic orders observed in the honeycomb iridates is a double-edged sword in the search for a quantum spin-liquid ground state: both attesting that the magnetic interactions provide many of the necessary ingredients, but simultaneously impeding access. As a result, focus has been drawn to the unusual magnetic orders and the hints they provide to the underlying spin correlations. However, the study of any particular broken symmetry state generally provides little clue as to the possibilities of other nearby ground states \cite{Anderson}. Here we use extreme magne…
We consider an efficient scheme to simulate fermionic Hubbard models with nonlocal density-density interactions in two dimensions, based on bond-centered auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. The simulations are shown to be sign-problem free within a finite, restricted parameter range. Using this approach, we first study the Hubbard model on the half-filled square lattice bilayer, including an interlayer repulsion term in addition to the local repulsion, and present the ground state phase diagram within the accessible parameter region. Starting from the antiferromagnetically ordered state in th…
Hexagonal LuFe2O4 is a promising charge-order (CO) driven multiferroic material with high charge and spin ordering temperatures. The coexisting charge and spin orders on Fe3+/Fe2+ sites result in novel magnetoelectric behaviors, but the coupling mechanism between the charge and spin orders remains elusive. Here, by tuning external pressure, we reveal three correlated spin-charge ordered phases in LuFe2O4: i) a centrosymmetric incommensurate three-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, ii) a non-centrosymmetric incommensurate quasi-two-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, and iii) a centrosymmetric…
Recent experiment on a honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$) revealed a novel spin-liquid-like behavior down to low temperature, which was ascribed to the frustration effect due to the competition between the AF nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$. Motivated by the experiment, we study the ordering of the $J_1$ -$J_2$ frustrated classical Heisenberg AF on a honeycomb lattice both by a low-temperature expansion and a Monte Carlo simulation. The model has been known to possess a massive degeneracy of the ground state, which, ho…
Single crystals of SrMn2P2 and CaMn2P2 were grown using Sn flux and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity Cp, and magnetic susceptibility chi = M/H measurements versus temperature T and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements. The x-ray diffraction results show that both compounds adopt the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure. The rho(T) measurements demonstrate insulating ground states for both compounds. The chi(T) and Cp(T) data reveal a weak first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperatu…
Crystallographic, electronic transport, thermal and magnetic properties are reported for SrMn2As2 and CaMn2As2 single crystals grown using Sn flux. Rietveld refinements of powder x-ray diffraction data show that the two compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure (space group P-3m1), in agreement with the literature. Electrical resistivity rho versus temperature T measurements demonstrate insulating ground states for both compounds with activation energies of 85 meV for SrMn2As2 and 61 meV for CaMn2As2. In a local-moment picture, the Mn^{+2} 3d^5 ions ar…
The current family of experimentally realized two-dimensional magnetic materials consist of 3$d$ transition metals with very weak spin-orbit coupling. In contrast, we report a new platform in a chemically bonded and layered 4$d$ oxide, with strong electron correlations and competing spin-orbit coupling. We synthesize ultra-thin sheets of SrRu$_2$O$_6$ using scalable liquid exfoliation. These exfoliated sheets are characterized by complementary experimental and theoretical techniques. The thickness of the nano-sheets varies between three to five monolayers, and within the first-principles calcu…
The two-dimensional Hubbard model defined for topological band structures exhibiting a quantum spin Hall effect poses fundamental challenges in terms of phenomenological characterization and microscopic classification. In the limit of infinite coupling U at half filling, the spin model Hamiltonians resulting from a strong coupling expansion show various forms of magnetic ordering phenomena depending on the underlying spin-orbit coupling terms. We investigate the infinite U limit of the Kane-Mele Hubbard model with z-axis intrinsic spin-orbit coupling as well as its generalization to a generica…
