In noninteracting limit, the density of states of a many body system can be expressed as the convolution of single body density of states of its subunits. Here we use the formulation to derive the ensemble averaged many body density of states for the cases in which subunits can be modelled by Gaussian or Wishart random matrix ensembles.
We construct a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for interacting fermions using the two-body density as the fundamental quantity. The central idea is mapping the interacting fermionic system onto an auxiliary system of interacting bosons. The correction term is approximated using correlated wave functions for the interacting system, resulting in an effective potential that represents the nodal surface. We calculate the properties of 3He and find good agreement with experiment and with other theoretical work. In particular, our results for the total energy agree well with other calculations where t…
In this paper, the emergence of macroscopic-scale pseudo time-irreversibility is studied in the closed classical many-body system of pair interacting particles. First, exact continuum equations are derived to the Hamiltonian dynamics without the utilisation of statistical mechanics. Next, it is shown that the momentum density field incorporates the thermal degrees of freedom in the considered scaling limit, and therefore initial condition indicated pseudo time-irreversible solutions may exist to the dynamical equations. Numerical evidence for pseudo-irreversible thermal equilibration, heat and…
The thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) has been well studied for systems with few degrees of freedom. While, in principle, the TUR holds for more complex systems with many interacting degrees of freedom as well, little is known so far about its behavior in such systems. We analyze the TUR in the thermodynamic limit for mixtures of driven particles with short-range interactions. Our main result is an explicit expression for the optimal estimate of the total entropy production in terms of single-particle currents and correlations between two-particle currents. Quantitative results for vari…
Entropy production is one of the most important characteristics of non-equilibrium steady states. We study here the steady-state entropy production, both at short times as well as in the long-time limit, of two important classes of non-equilibrium systems: transport systems and reaction-diffusion systems. The usefulness of the mean entropy production rate and of the large deviation function of the entropy production for characterizing non-equilibrium steady states of interacting many-body systems is discussed. We show that the large deviation function displays a kink-like feature at zero entro…
We explore the possibility that physical phenomena arising from interacting multi-particle systems, can be usefully interpreted in terms of multi-player games. We show how non-cooperative phenomena can emerge from Ising Hamiltonians, even though the individual spins behave cooperatively. Our findings establish a mapping between two fundamental models from condensed matter physics and game theory.
Wavefunction structure is analyzed for dense interacting many-boson systems using Hamiltonian $H$, which is a sum of one-body $h(1)$ and an embedded GOE of $k$-body interaction $V(k)$ with strength $λ$. In the first analysis, a complete analytical description of the variance of the strength function as a function of $λ$ and $k$ is derived and the marker $λ_t$ defining thermalization region is obtained. In the strong coupling limit ($λ> λ_t$), the conditional $q$-normal density describes Gaussian to semi-circle transition in strength functions as body rank $k$ of the interaction increases. In t…
We observe the onset of non-ergodicity from ballistic propagation of a two-body bound state in an interacting discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) due to time-dependent disorder in the interaction. The effect of the disorder on the two-body state can be interpreted as Anderson-type localisation in a projected DTQW, but without saturation of entanglement entropy. We characterise the two-body localisation in terms of the rate of growth of entanglement entropy and compute the localisation length. We find indications for two distinct growth laws for the entanglement: a logarithmic law in the delocali…
The recent discovery of quantum many-body scar states has revealed the possibility of having states with low entanglement that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in nonintegrable systems. Such states with low entanglement entropy are rare but naturally exist in the integrable system of free fermions. Here, we demonstrate analytically that these atypical states would be always eliminated when an arbitrary weak interaction is introduced between the fermions. In particular, we show that the probability of having a many-body scar state with entanglement entropy satisfying a sub-volum…
Certain periodically driven quantum many-particle systems in one dimension are known to exhibit edge modes that are related to topological properties and lead to approximate degeneracies of the Floquet spectrum. A similar situation occurs in spin chains, where stable edge modes were shown to exist at all energies in certain integrable spin chains. Moreover, these edge modes were found to be remarkably stable to perturbations. Here we investigate the stability of edge modes in interacting, periodically driven, clean systems. We introduce a model that features edge modes that persist over times …
We study the physics of cold polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice in the regime of strong three-body interactions, as put forward recently by Büchler [Nature Phys. 3, 726 (2007)]. To this end quantum Monte Carlo simulations, exact diagonalization and a semiclassical approach are used to explore hardcore bosons on the two-dimensional square lattice which interact solely by long ranged three-body terms. The resulting phase diagram shows a sequence of solid and supersolid phases. Our findings are directly relevant for future experimental implementations and open a new route towards the …
One of the main questions of research on quantum many-body systems following unitary out of equilibrium dynamics is to find out how local expectation values equilibrate in time. For non-interacting models, this question is rather well understood. However, the best known bounds for general quantum systems are vastly crude, scaling unfavorable with the system size. Nevertheless, empirical and numerical evidence suggests that for generic interacting many-body systems, generic local observables, and sufficiently well-behaved states, the equilibration time does not depend strongly on the system siz…
The exact solution of the interacting many-body system is important and is difficult to solve. In this paper, we introduce a group method to solve the interacting many-body problem using the relation between the permutation group and the unitary group. We prove a group theorem first, then using the theorem, we represent the Hamiltonian of the interacting many-body system by the Casimir operators of unitary group. The eigenvalues of Casimir operators could give the exact values of energy and thus solve those problems exactly. This method maps the interacting many-body system onto an intermediat…
We investigate the dynamics of bound states of two interacting particles, either bosons or fermions, performing a continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional lattice. We consider the situation where the distance between both particles has a hard bound, and the richer situation where the particles are bound by a smooth confining potential. The main emphasis is on the velocity characterizing the ballistic spreading of these bound states, and on the structure of the asymptotic distribution profile of their center-of-mass coordinate. The latter profile generically exhibits many internal fron…
Because active particles break time-reversal symmetry, an active fluid can sustain currents even without an external drive. We show that when a passive body is placed in a fluid of pairwise interacting active particles, it generates long-range currents, corresponding to density and pressure gradients. By using a multipole expansion and a far-field constitutive relation, we show that the leading-order behavior of all three corresponds to a source dipole. Then, when two bodies or more are placed in the active fluid, generic long-range interactions between the bodies occur. We find these to be qu…
Long-range interacting systems irreversibly relax as a result of their finite number of particles, $N$. At order $1/N$, this process is described by the inhomogeneous Balescu--Lenard equation. Yet, this equation exactly vanishes in one-dimensional inhomogeneous systems with a monotonic frequency profile and sustaining only 1:1 resonances. In the limit where collective effects can be neglected, we derive a closed and explicit $1/N^{2}$ collision operator for such systems. We detail its properties highlighting in particular how it satisfies an $H$-theorem for Boltzmann entropy. We also compare i…
We verify the validity of the Cohen-Gallavotti fluctuation theorem for the strongly correlated problem of charge transfer through an impurity in a chiral Luttinger liquid, which is realizable experimentally as a quantum point contact in a fractional quantum Hall edge state device. This is accomplished via the development of an analytical method to calculate the full counting statistics (FCS) of the problem in all the parameter regimes involving the temperature, the Hall voltage, and the gate voltage.
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) extend the concept of phase transitions and thus universality to the non-equilibrium regime. In this letter, we investigate DQPTs in a string of ions simulating interacting transverse-field Ising models. We observe non-equilibrium dynamics induced by a quantum quench and show for strings of up to 10 ions the direct detection of DQPTs by measuring a quantity that becomes non-analytic in time in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we provide a link between DQPTs and the dynamics of other relevant quantities such as the magnetization, and we establish a …
Employing one plus two-body random matrix ensembles for bosons, temperature and entropy are calculated, using different definitions, as a function of the two-body interaction strength λfor a system with 10 bosons (m=10) in five single particle levels (N=5). It is found that in a region λ\sim λ_t, different definitions give essentially same values for temperature and entropy, thus defining a thermalization region. Also, (m,N) dependence of λ_t has been derived. It is seen that λ_t is much larger than the λvalues where level fluctuations change from Poisson to GOE and strength functions change f…

Work in isolated quantum systems is a random variable and its probability distribution function obeys the celebrated fluctuation theorems of Crooks and Jarzynski. In this study, we provide a simple way to describe the work probability distribution function for sudden quench processes in quantum systems with large Hilbert spaces. This description can be constructed from two elements: the level density of the initial Hamiltonian, and a smoothed strength function that provides information about the influence of the perturbation over the eigenvectors in the quench process, and is especially suited…
We study the emergence of Boltzmann's law for the "single particle energy distribution" in a closed system of interacting classical spins. It is shown that for a large number of particles Boltzmann's law may occur, even if the interaction is very strong. Specific attention is paid to classical analogs of the average shape of quantum eigenstates and "local density of states", which are very important in quantum chaology. Analytical predictions are then compared with numerical data.
We demonstrate that stability and chaotic-transport features of paradigmatic nonequilibrium many-body systems, i.e., periodically kicked and interacting particles, can deviate significantly from the expected ones of full instability and normal chaotic diffusion for arbitrarily strong chaos, arbitrary number of particles, and different interaction cases. We rigorously show that under the latter general conditions there exist {\em fully stable} orbits, accelerator-mode (AM) fixed points, performing ballistic motion in momentum. It is numerically shown that an {\em "isolated chaotic zone"} (ICZ),…
Systems of interacting bosons in triple-well potentials are of significant theoretical and experimental interest. They are explored in contexts that range from quantum phase transitions and quantum dynamics to semiclassical analysis. Here, we systematically investigate the onset of quantum chaos in a triple-well model that moves away from integrability as its potential gets tilted. Even in its deepest chaotic regime, the system presents features reminiscent of integrability. Our studies are based on level spacing distribution and spectral form factor, structure of the eigenstates, diagonal and…
We study heating rates in strongly interacting quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Using a numerical linked cluster expansion, we calculate the energy as a function of the driving time and find a robust exponential regime. The heating rates are shown to be in excellent agreement with Fermi's golden rule. We discuss the relationship between heating rates and, within the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, the smooth function that characterizes the off-diagonal matrix elements of the drive operator in the eigenbasis of the static Hamiltonian. We show that such a function, in no…
Population dynamics deals with the collective phenomena of living organisms, and it has attracted much attention since it is expected to explain how not only living organisms but also human beings have been adapted to varying environments. However, it is quite difficult to insist on a general statement on living organisms since mathematical models heavily depend on phenomena that we focus on. Recently it was reported that the fluctuation relations on the fitness of living organisms held for a quite general problem setting. But, interactions between organisms were not incorporated in the proble…
We numerically study level statistics of disordered interacting quantum many-body systems. A two-parameter plasma model which controls level repulsion exponent $β$ and range $h$ of interactions between eigenvalues is shown to reproduce accurately features of level statistics across the transition from ergodic to many-body localized phase. Analysis of higher order spacing ratios indicates that the considered $β$-$h$ model accounts even for long range spectral correlations and allows to obtain a clear picture of the flow of level statistics across the transition. Comparing spectral form factors …
We provide numerical evidence combined with an analytical understanding of the many-body mobility edge for the strongly anisotropic spin-1/2 XXZ model in a random magnetic field. The system dynamics can be understood in terms of symmetry-constrained excitations about parent states with ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic short range order. These two regimes yield vastly different dynamics producing an observable, tunable many-body mobility edge. We compute a set of diagnostic quantities that verify the presence of the mobility edge and discuss how weakly correlated disorder can tune the mobil…
We study the nature of many-body eigenstates of a system of interacting chiral spinless fermions on a ring. We find a coexistence of fermionic and bosonic types of eigenstates in parts of the many-body spectrum. Some bosonic eigenstates, native to the strong interaction limit, persist at intermediate and weak couplings, enabling persistent density oscillations in the system, despite it being far from integrability.
We demonstrate that a combination of disorder and interactions in a two-dimensional bulk topological insulator can generically drive its helical edge insulating. We establish this within the framework of helical Luttinger liquid theory and exact Emery-Luther mapping. The gapless glassy edge state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry in a `spin glass' fashion, and may be viewed as a localized state of solitons which carry half integer charge. Such a qualitatively distinct edge state provides a simple explanation for heretofore puzzling experimental observations. This phase exhibits a str…
Thermalization has been shown to occur in a number of closed quantum many-body systems, but the description of the actual thermalization dynamics is prohibitively complex. Here, we present a model - in one and two dimensions - for which we can analytically show that the evolution into thermal equilibrium is governed by a Fokker-Planck equation derived from the underlying quantum dynamics. Our approach does not rely on a formal distinction of weakly coupled bath and system degrees of freedom. The results show that transitions within narrow energy shells lead to a dynamics which is dominated by …
We construct an interacting integrable Floquet model featuring quasiparticle excitations with topologically nontrivial chiral dispersion. This model is a fully quantum generalization of an integrable classical cellular automaton. We write down and solve the Bethe equations for the generalized quantum model, and show that these take on a particularly simple form that allows for an exact solution: essentially, the quasiparticles behave like interacting hard rods. The generalized thermodynamics and hydrodynamics of this model follow directly. Although the model is interacting, its unusually simpl…
