We state and prove two theorems about the ground state of magnetic systems described by very general Heisenberg-type models and discuss their implications for magnetic neutron scattering. The first theorem states that two models cannot have the same correlator without sharing the corresponding ground states. According to the second theorem, an $N$-qubit wave function cannot reproduce the correlators of a given system unless it represents a true ground state of that system. We discuss the implications for neutron scattering inverse problems. We argue that the first theorem provides a framework to understand neutron-based Hamiltonian learning. Furthermore, we propose a variational approach to quantum magnets based on the second theorem where a representation of the wave function (held, for instance, in a neural network or in the qubit register of a quantum processor) is optimised to fit experimental neutron-scattering data directly, without the involvement of a model Hamiltonian.
Combining first principle density functional calculations and Moriya's self-consistent renormalization theory, we explain the recently reported counterintuitive appearance of an ordered magnetic state in uniaxially strained Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ beyond the Lifshits transition. We show that strain weakens the quantum spin fluctuations, which destroy the static order, more strongly than the tendency to magnetism. A different rate of decrease of the spin fluctuations vs. magnetic stabilization energy promotes the onset of a static magnetic order beyond a critical strain.
We motivate and perform a calculation of the energy of a cold fluid of charged fermions in the presence of a striped magnetic background. We find that a non-trivial value for the doping density on the walls is preferred
Based on low temperature resistivity, heat capacity and magnetization investigations we show that the unusually strong suppression of superconductivity in Lu$_x$Zr$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ BSC-type superconductors in the range $x$$<$0.08 is caused by the emergence of static spin polarization in the vicinity of non-magnetic lutetium impurities. The analysis of received results points to a formation of static magnetic moments with $μ_{eff}$$\approx$$3μ_B$ per Lu-ion. The size of these spin polarized nanodomains was estimated to be about 5 $Å$.
The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid behavior. The results imply the magnetic transition temperature in undoped CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ is very close to absolute 0 K. The possibility for proximity of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to the quantum critical point wi…
Equations of the magnetization dynamics are derived for an arbitrary curved 2D surface. General static solutions are obtained in the limit of a strong anisotropy of both signs (easy-surface and easy-normal cases). It is shown that the effect of the curvature can be treated as appearance of an effective magnetic field which is aligned along the surface normal for the case of easy-surface anisotropy and it is tangential to the surface for the case of easy-normal anisotropy. In general, the existence of such a field denies the solutions strictly tangential as well as strictly normal to the surfac…
Measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility and of the nuclear magnetic resonance of multiwalled vanadium-oxide nanotubes are reported. In this nanoscale magnet the structural low-dimensionality and mixed valency of vanadium ions yield a complex temperature dependence of the static magnetization and the nuclear relaxation rates. Analysis of the different contributions to the magnetism allows to identify individual interlayer magnetic sites as well as strongly antiferromagnetically coupled vanadium spins (S = 1/2) in the double layers of the nanotube's wall. In particular, the data give …
Neutron-scattering experiments were performed to study the magnetic field effect on the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_4, which shows the coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. The (1/2 3/2 0) magnetic Bragg intensity, which mainly originates from the order of both the Cu and Nd moments at low temperatures, shows no magnetic field dependence when the field is applied perpendicular to the CuO_{2} plane up to 10 T above the upper critical field. This result is significantly different from that reported for the hole-doped cuprate superconductors, in whic…
Static magnetic order of quasi two-dimensional FeAs compounds Sr4A2O6-xFe2As2, with A = Sc and V, has been detected by 57Fe Moessbauer and muon spin relaxation (μSR) spectroscopies. The non-superconducting stoichiometric (x = 0) A = Sc system exhibits a static internal/hyperfine magnetic field both at the 57Fe and μ+ sites, indicating antiferromagnetic order of Fe moments below TN = 35 K with ~ 0.1 Bohr magneton per Fe at T = 2 K. The superconducting and oxygen deficient (x = 0.4) A = V system exhibits a static internal field only at the μ+ site below TN ~ 40 K, indicating static magnetic orde…
The structure and the magnetic properties of layered Li3Cu2SbO6 are investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, static susceptibility, and electron spin resonance studies up to 330 GHz. The XRD data experimentally verify the space group C2/m with halved unit cell volume in contrast to previously reported C2/c. In addition, the data show significant Li/Cu-intersite exchange. Static magnetic susceptibility and ESR measurements show two magnetic contributions, i.e. quasi-free spins at low-temperature and a spin-gapped magnetic subsystem, with about half of the spins being associated to each subsyst…
A new type of three-dimensional magnetic soliton in easy-axis ferromagnets is predicted by taking simultaneous account of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and an external magnetic field. The numerically obtained static three-dimensional solitons with a finite energy are characterized by a Hopf topological index H=0 and have a vortex structure. The structure of these solitons and the dependence of their energy on the external field are determined. The asymptotic behavior of these solitons is investigated and a necessary condition for their existence is found.
LiOsO$_3$ is the first example of a new class of material called a ferroelectric metal. We performed zero-field and longitudinal-field $μ$SR, along with a combination of electronic structure and dipole field calculations, to determine the magnetic ground state of LiOsO$_3$. We find that the sample contains both static Li nuclear moments and dynamic Os electronic moments. Below $\approx 0.7\,$K, the fluctuations of the Os moments slow down, though remain dynamic down to 0.08$\,$K. We expect this could result in a frozen-out, disordered ground state at even lower temperatures.
Spin-1/2 compounds A3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) have one-dimensional (1D) inequilateral diamond chains. We analyze the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and determine the magnetic exchange interactions. In contrast to the azurite, a dimer is formed on one of the sides of the diamond. From numerical analyses of the proposed model, we find that the dimer together with a nearly isolated 1D Heisenberg chain characterizes magnetic properties including magnetization curve and magnetic excitations. This implies that a dimer-monomer composite chain without frustration is a goo…
The low-temperature behavior of Ce2RuZn4 has been investigated. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility data reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at a Neel temperature of 2 K. Ce2RuZn4 is a static intermediate-valent compound with two crystallographically independent cerium atoms. The magnetic data clearly show that only one cerium site is magnetic (Ce^3+), while the second one carries no magnetic moment. The experimental data are interpreted with the help of first principles electronic structure calculations using density functional theory and the augmented spherical wave method. The calc…
We develop an approach to treat magnetic energy of a ferromagnet for arbitrary curved wires and shells on the assumption that the anisotropy contribution much exceeds the dipolar and other weak interactions. We show that the curvature induces two effective magnetic interactions: effective magnetic anisotropy and effective Dzyaloshinskii-like interaction. We derive an equation of magnetisation dynamics and propose a general static solution for the limit case of strong anisotropy. To illustrate our approach we consider the magnetisation structure in a ring wire and a cone surface: ground states …
A synchrotron x-ray diffraction study of the crystallographic structure of PrO2 in the Jahn-Teller distorted phase is reported. The distortion of the oxygen sublattice, which was previously ambiguous, is shown to be a chiral structure in which neighbouring oxygen chains have opposite chiralities. A temperature dependent study of the magnetic excitation spectrum, probed by neutron inelastic scattering, is also reported. Changes in the energies and relative intensities of the crystal field transitions provide an insight into the interplay between the static and dynamic Jahn-Teller effects.
A perturbation spin-wave theory for the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice is proposed to calculate the uniform static magnetic susceptibility at finite temperatures, where a divergence in the previous theories due to an artificial phase transition has been removed. To the zeroth order, the main features of the uniform static susceptibility are produced: a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures and a smooth crossover in the intermediate range and the Curie law at high temperatures. When the leading corrections from the spin-wave interactions are included, the re…
In this Letter we report the LDA+DMFT (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) results for magnetic properties of parent superconductor LaFeAsO in paramagnetic phase. Calculated uniform magnetic susceptibility shows linear dependence at intermediate temperatures in agreement with experimental data. For high temperatures ($>$1000 K) calculations show saturation and then susceptibility decreases with temperature. Contributions to temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility are strongly orbitally dependent. It is related to the form of the orbitally…
We report that special care is needed when longitudinal magnetic susceptibility is computed in a magnetically ordered phase, especially in metals. We demonstrate this by studying static susceptibility in both a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic state in the random phase approximation to the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice. In contrast to the case in the disordered phase, a first derivative of the chemical potential (or the density) with respect to a magnetic field does not vanish in a magnetically ordered phase when the field is applied parallel to the magnetic moment. T…
We consider the response of the density of a fermion ensemble to an applied weak static magnetic field. It is known that for non-interacting Fermi gas, this response is fully characterized by the Fermi volume and the Berry curvature on the Fermi surface. Here we show the same result holds for interacting fermions, including Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid, to all orders in perturbation theory. Our result relies only on the assumption of a well-defined Fermi surface and the general analytic properties of quantum field theory, and is completely model independent.
We present $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements on single-crystalline FeSe under pressures up to 2 GPa. Based on the observation of the splitting and broadening of the NMR spectrum due to structural twin domains, we discovered that static, local nematic ordering exists well above the bulk nematic ordering temperature, $T_{\rm s}$. The static, local nematic order and the low-energy stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, as revealed by NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements, are both insensitive to pressure application. These NMR results provide clear evidence for the microscopic cooperat…
A universal linear-temperature dependence of the uniform magnetic susceptibility has been observed in the nonmagnetic normal state of iron-pnictides. This non-Pauli and non-Curie-Weiss-like paramagnetic behavior cannot be understood within a pure itinerant picture. We argue that it results from the existence of a wide antiferromagnetic fluctuation window in which the local spin-density-wave correlations exist but the global directional order has not been established yet.
We report on the magnetic properties of geometrically frustrated K3CrO4, in which Cr5+ cations are arranged on a distorted pyrochlore lattice. The crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of the compound are investigated in detail. A combination of DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements together with thermoremanent magnetization decay measurements reveal several magnetic transitions: the onset of glassy canted antiferromagnetic order occurs at 36 K, followed by the appearance of ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic cluster glass behavior below the freezing temperature of 20 K. …
Anyonic excitations emerging from a Kitaev spin liquid can form a basis for quantum computers. Searching for such excitations motivated intense research on the honeycomb iridate materials. However, access to a spin liquid ground state has been hindered by magnetic ordering. Cu2IrO3 is a new honeycomb iridate without thermodynamic signatures of a long-range order. Here, we use muon spin relaxation to uncover the magnetic ground state of Cu2IrO3. We find a two-component depolarization with slow and fast relaxation rates corresponding to distinct regions with dynamic and static magnetism, respect…
We report neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of BaFe$_{1.92}$Co$_{0.08}$As$_2$. The magnetic Bragg peak intensity is reduced by 6 % upon cooling through T$_C$. The spin dynamics exhibit a gap of 8 meV with anisotropic three-dimensional (3d) interactions. Below T$_C$ additional intensity appears at an energy of $\sim$4.5(0.5) meV similar to previous observations of a spin resonance in other Fe-based superconductors. No further gapping of the spin excitations is observed below T$_C$ for energies down to 2 meV. These observations suggest the redistribution of spectral weight from …
