In this brief paper, we show that atom interferometer experiments such as MAGIS, AION or AEDGE have the potential to not only probe very light dark matter models, but they will also probe quantum gravity. We show that the linear coupling of a singlet scalar dark matter particle to electrons or photons is already ruled out by our current understanding of quantum gravity coupled to data from torsion pendulum experiments. On the other hand, the quadratic coupling of scalar dark matter to electrons and photons has a large viable parameter space which will be probed by these atom interferometers. Implications for searches of quantum gravity are discussed.
The implications of the LHC SUSY searches as well as the discovery of a new bosonic state compatible with the lightest Higgs boson will be discussed in the context of constrained and general MSSM scenarios. Exploring the MSSM through the Higgs sector is an alternative and complementary path to direct searches, and tight constraints on the MSSM parameter space can be obtained.
I discuss some essential features of the electroweak hierarchy problem and the ensuing motivation for weak-scale supersymmetry. Taking the hierarchy problem seriously, null results in searches for SUSY at the LHC favor specific regions of SUSY parameter space. More broadly, they suggest investigating a variety of alternative approaches to the hierarchy problem with diverse experimental signatures.
Among various dark matter candidates, bosonic ultralight fields with masses below 1~eV are well motivated. Recently, a number of novel approaches have been put forward to search for ultralight dark matter candidates using laser interferometers at various scales. Those include our proposals to search for axion-like particles (ALPs) and vector fields with laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors. ALPs can be searched for by measuring the oscillating polarization rotation of laser light. Massive vector fields weakly coupled to the standard model sector can also be searched for by measur…
With the latest LHC available results, we consider the generic constraints on massive graviton. Both dijet and dilepton resonance searches are used. The limits on parameter space can be applied to many models. As an illustration, we show the constraints for Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Implications on massive graviton and the coupling strength are discussed. For $k/M_{pl}=0.1$, $M_G<2.2$ TeV region is excluded at 95% confidence level. We also present some interesting implications on the RS radion with respect to the 125 GeV excess at the LHC. For $k/M_{pl}=0.1$, $Λ_ϕ<13.8$ TeV is excluded where…
In recent years, realistic hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies like the Milky Way have become available, enabling a reliable estimate of the dark matter density and velocity distribution in the Solar neighborhood. We review here the status of hydrodynamical simulations and their implications for the interpretation of direct dark matter searches. We focus in particular on: the criteria to identify Milky Way-like galaxies; the impact of baryonic physics on the dark matter velocity distribution; the possible presence of substructures like clumps, streams, or dark disks; and on the implications…
Global frequentist fits to the CMSSM and NUHM1 using the MasterCode framework are updated to include the public results of searches for supersymmetric signals using \sim 1/fb of LHC data recorded by ATLAS and CMS and \sim 0.3/fb of data recorded by LHCb. We also include the constraints imposed by the electroweak precision and B-physics observables, the cosmological dark matter density and the XENON100 search for spin-independent dark matter scattering. Finally we also investigate the impact of a possible Higgs signal around 125 GeV. The various constraints set new bounds on the parameter space…
The LHC has collided protons on protons at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV between 2010-2012, referred to as the Run I period. We review the current status of searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model at the end of Run I by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, limited to the 8 TeV search results published or submitted for publication as of the end of February 2014. We discuss some of the implications of these searches on the existence of TeV scale new physics, with a special focus on two open questions: the hierarchy problem, and the nature of dark matter. Finally, we give an outlook…
A wide range of quantum sensing technologies are rapidly being integrated into the experimental portfolio of the high energy physics community. Here we focus on sensing with atomic interferometers; mechanical devices read out with optical or microwave fields; precision spectroscopic methods with atomic, nuclear, and molecular systems; and trapped atoms and ions. We give a variety of detection targets relevant to particle physics for which these systems are uniquely poised to contribute. This includes experiments at the precision frontier like measurements of the electron dipole moment and elec…
We study the implications of LHC searches on SUSY particle spectra using flat scans of the 19-parameter pMSSM phase space. We apply constraints from flavour physics, g_mu-2, dark matter and earlier LEP and Tevatron searches. The sensitivity of the LHC SUSY searches with jets, leptons and missing energy is assessed by reproducing with fast simulation the recent CMS analyses after validation on benchmark points. We present results in terms of the fraction of pMSSM points compatible with all the constraints which are excluded by the LHC searches with 1 fb^{-1} and 15 fb^{-1} as a function of the …
We study the constraints implied by partial wave unitarity on new physics in the form of spin-zero di-boson resonances at LHC. We derive the scale where the effective description in terms of the SM supplemented by a single resonance is expected to break down depending on the resonance mass and signal cross-section. Likewise, we use unitarity arguments in order to set perturbativity bounds on renormalizable UV completions of the effective description. We finally discuss under which conditions scalar di-boson resonance signals can be accommodated within weakly-coupled models.
In this article I review some connections between flavor physics and collider physics. The first part discusses the effect of right-handed charged currents on the determination of the CKM elements V_ub. It is shown that such an effective right-handed W-coupling can be generated in the MSSM which would lead to a sizable enhancement of single-top production at the LHC. The second part of this article focuses on the constraints on the mass splitting between left-handed squarks from Kaon and D mixing. Such a mass splitting has interesting consequences for squark decay chains at colliders.
Within the four generation Standard Model, the Higgs couplings to gluons and to photons deviate in a significant way from the predictions of the three generation Standard Model. As a consequence, large departures in several Higgs production and decay channels are expected. Recent Higgs search results, presented by ATLAS, CMS and CDF, hint on the existence of a Higgs boson with a mass around 125 GeV. Using these results and assuming such a Higgs boson, we derive exclusion limits on the four generation Standard Model. For m_H = 125 GeV, the model is excluded at 99.9% confidence level. For 124 Ge…
The search for the a Standard Model Higgs boson at the LHC is reaching a critical stage as the possible mass range for the particle has become extremely narrow and some signal at a mass of about 125 GeV is starting to emerge. We study the implications of these LHC Higgs searches for Higgs portal models of dark matter in a rather model independent way. Their impact on the cosmological relic density and on the direct detection rates are studied in the context of generic scalar, vector and fermionic thermal dark matter particles. Assuming a sufficiently small invisible Higgs decay branching ratio…
We discuss the effect of next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the Higgsstrahlung process, where the Higgs boson decays to bottom quarks, using a partonic-level fully differential code. First we evaluate the impact of initial- and final-state gluon radiation on the reconstruction of a mass peak with the fat-jet analysis in the boosted regime at the LHC with sqrt(s) = 14 TeV as proposed in Butterworth et al. (2008) [1]. Finally we study the current CMS search strategy for this channel and compare it to the fat-jet procedure at the LHC with sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. Both show that final-state QC…
We analyse a combination of ATLAS and CMS searches for dijet resonances at run I and run II, presenting the results in a way that can be easily applied to a generic Z' model. As an illustrative example, we consider a simple model of a Z' coupling to quarks and dark matter. We first study a benchmark case with fixed couplings and then focus on the assumption that the Z' is responsible for setting the dark matter relic abundance. Dijet constraints place significant bounds on this scenario, allowing us to narrow down the allowed range of dark matter masses for given Z' mass and width.
Low-mass (sub-eV) scalar field dark matter may induce apparent oscillations of fundamental constants, resulting in corresponding oscillations of the size and the index of refraction of solids. Laser interferometers are highly sensitive to changes in the size and index of refraction of the main beamsplitter. Using cross-correlated data of the Fermilab Holometer instrument, which consists of twin co-located 40-m arm length power-recycled interferometers, we investigate the possible existence of scalar field dark matter candidates in the mass range between 1.6$\cdot$10$^{-12}$ eV and 1.0$\cdot$10…
We investigate the viability of light neutralino scenarios as promoted by dark matter direct detection experiments. Using high statistics scans in the pMSSM we have identified several scenarios which give rise to very light neutralinos with large direct detection scattering cross sections. Our results are challenged with constraints from dark matter relic density, direct detection, indirect detection, as well as flavour physics, electroweak precision tests, LEP and Tevatron limits, LHC limits on SUSY, Higgs and monojet searches. In particular we study the effect of a Higgs boson in the range 1…
At the beginning of 2016, LIGO reported the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves. The measured signal was compatible with the merger of two black holes of about 30 solar masses, releasing about 3 solar masses of energy in gravitational waves. We consider the possible neutrino emission from a binary black hole merger relative to the energy released in gravitational waves and investigate the constraints coming from the non-detection of counterpart neutrinos, focusing on IceCube and its energy range. The information from searches for counterpart neutrinos is combined with the diffus…
Heavy vector-like quarks coupled to a scalar $S$ will induce a coupling of this scalar to gluons and possibly (if electrically charged) photons. The decay of the heavy quark into $Sq$, with $q$ being a Standard Model quark, provides, if kinematically allowed, new channels for heavy quark searches. Inspired by naturalness considerations, we consider the case of a vector-like partner of the top quark. For illustration, we show that a singlet partner can be searched for at the 13$\,$TeV LHC through its decay into a scalar resonance in the $2γ+\ell + X$ final states, especially if the diphoton bra…
A rather high Higgs mass, m_h = 126 GeV, suggests that at least a part of the supersymmetric spectrum of the MSSM may live beyond O(1TeV) and hence inaccessible to the LHC. However, there are theoretical and phenomenological reasons supporting a possibility that charginos and neutralinos remain much closer to the electroweak scale. In this paper, we explore such a scenario in the light of recent Higgs measurements, mainly its di-photon decay rate, where the data might indicate a slight excess over the SM prediction. That excess could be fitted by the contribution of light charginos provided ta…
Grand Unified Theories (GUT) offer an elegant and unified description of electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions at high energy scales. A phenomenological and exciting possibility to grasp GUT is to search for TeV scale observables arising from Abelian groups embedded in GUT constructions. That said, we use dilepton data (ee and $μμ$) that has been proven to be a golden channel for a wide variety of new phenomena expected in theories beyond the Standard Model to probe GUT-inspired models. Since heavy dilepton resonances feature high signal selection efficiencies and relatively well-under…
A new experimental evaluation of the quenching factor for nuclear recoils in NaI[Tl] is described. Systematics affecting previous measurements are addressed by careful characterization of the emission spectrum of the neutron source, use of a small scintillator coupled to an ultra-bialkali high quantum efficiency photomultiplier, and evaluation of non-linearities in the electron recoil response via Compton scattering. A trend towards a rapidly diminishing quenching factor with decreasing sodium recoil energy is revealed. Additionally, no evidence for crystal lattice channeling of low-energy rec…
In this work we point out that the apparent diphoton excess initially presented by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations could have originated from a radion in the bulk Higgs scenario within a warped extra dimension. In this scenario the couplings of the radion to massive gauge bosons are suppressed, allowing it to evade existing searches. In the presence of mixing with the Higgs, due to the strong constraints from diboson searches, only points near what we denominate the alignment region were able to explain the diphoton signal and evade other experimental constraints. In light of the new measurem…
Many composite Higgs models predict the existence of vector-like quarks with masses outside the reach of the LHC, e.g. $m_Q \gtrsim 2$ TeV, in particular if these models contain a dark matter candidate. In such models the mass of the new resonances is bounded from above to satisfy the constraint from the observed relic density. We therefore develop new strategies to search for vector-like quarks at a future $100$ TeV collider and evaluate what masses and interactions can be probed. We find that masses as large as $\sim 6.4$ ($\sim 9$) TeV can be tested if the fermionic resonances decay into St…
We study high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way type galaxies obtained within the "Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments" (EAGLE) project, and identify the those that best satisfy observational constraints on the Milky Way total stellar mass, rotation curve, and galaxy shape. Contrary to mock galaxies selected on the basis of their total virial mass, the Milky Way analogues so identified consistently exhibit very similar dark matter profiles inside the solar circle, therefore enabling more accurate predictions for indirect dark matter searches. We find in par…
We discuss the constraints on Supersymmetry in the Higgs sector arising from LHC searches, rare B decays and dark matter direct detection experiments. We show that constraints derived on the mass of the lightest h0 and the CP-odd A0 bosons from these searches are covering a broader fraction of the SUSY parameter space compared to searches for strongly interacting supersymmetric particle partners. We discuss the implications of a mass determination in the range 123 < Mh < 127 GeV, inspired by the intriguing hints reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, as well as those of a non-observatio…
For the case of the MSSM and the most general form of the NMSSM (GNMSSM) we determine the reduction in the fine tuning that follows from allowing gaugino masses to be non-degenerate at the unification scale, taking account of the LHC8 bounds on SUSY masses, the Higgs mass bound, gauge coupling unification and the requirement of an acceptable dark matter density. We show that low-fine tuned points fall in the region of gaugino mass ratios predicted by specific unified and string models. For the case of the MSSM the minimum fine tuning is still large, approximately 1:60 allowing for a 3 GeV unce…
We study theoretical implications of direct dark matter searches in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We assume that no accidental cancellations occur in the spin-independent elastic neutralino-quark scattering cross section, but do not impose any relations among the weak-scale MSSM parameters. We show that direct detection cross section below 10^-44 cm^2 requires the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) neutralino to be close to either a pure gaugino or pure Higgsino limit, with smaller cross sections correlated with smaller admixture of the subdominant components. The curre…
The stability of the dark matter particle could be attributed to the remnant $Z_2$ symmetry that arises from the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry. This plausible scenario contains a Goldstone boson which, as recently shown by Weinberg, is a strong candidate for dark radiation. We show in this paper that this Goldstone boson, together with the CP-even scalar associated to the spontaneous breaking of the global U(1) symmetry, plays a central role in the dark matter production. Besides, the mixing of the CP-even scalar with the Standard Model Higgs boson leads to novel Higgs decay c…
Hidden monopole is a plausible dark matter candidate due to its stability, but its direct experimental search is extremely difficult due to feeble interactions with the standard model particles in the minimal form. Then, we introduce an axion, $a$, connecting the hidden monopole and the standard model particles and examine the current limits and future prospects of direct dark matter searches and beam-dump experiments. We find two parameter regions around $m_a = {\cal O}(10)$ MeV, $f_a = {\cal O}(10^{5})$ GeV and $m_a = {\cal O}(100)$ MeV, $f_a = {\cal O}(10^{4})$ GeV where monopole dark matte…
