Recent works argue that the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD-like theories can be derived from supersymmetric (SUSY) QCD with perturbation of anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB). Nevertheless, despite the fact that AMSB needs to be a small (but still exact) perturbation, there are two other major problems remaining unsolved: first, in order to derive the chiral symmetry breaking pattern, one needs to minimize the potential along a certain specific direction, identifying this direction fully as an outcome is nontrivial given the moduli space of degenerate vacua in the SUSY limit; second, when SUSY is broken, non-holomorphic states might emerge and be relevant for determining the vacuum structure. In this work, we focus on SUSY QCD with $N_f\leq N_c+1$ and perturb the theories using AMSB. Without minimizing the potential along a certain specific direction in the moduli space, we successfully derive the expected chiral symmetry breaking pattern when $N_f<N_c$. However, when $N_f=N_c$ and $N_f=N_c+1$, we show that tree-level AMSB would induce runaway directions, along which baryon number is spontaneously broken, and the vacua with broken baryon number can be deeper while the field values are not far from the origin. This implies that phase transitions and/or non-holomorphic physics are necessary. Moreover, we perform explicit consistency checks on ultraviolet insensitivity for different $N_f$ by adding the holomorphic mass term for the last flavor, we find that the jump of AMSB potential indeed matches the contribution from the holomorphic mass term. We also show in general that, when tree-level AMSB is not vanishing, the origin of the moduli space in s-confining theories does not persist as a minimum.
The physics of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the case of the simultaneous presence of a magnetic field and a fermionic quartic interaction is discussed for both local and nonlocal kernels in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. The approach is based on the use of Valatin-Bogoliubov canonical transformations, which allow, in the absence of fermionic quartic terms, to completely diagonalize the Hamiltonian and construct the vacuum state.
The pattern of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) in confining background fields is analyzed. It is explicitly demonstrated how to get the inverse square root large proper time asymptotic of the operator product expansion which is needed for CSB.
Phenomenological model for confining Lagrangian based on the perfect dia-electric property of the vacuum of QCD, proposed by Kogut-Susskind and by 't Hooft, is derived by the stability of the condensed vacuum.
Abelian theories in three dimensions can have linearly confining phases as a result of monopole-instantons, as shown, for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory broken to its abelian subgroup, by Polyakov. In this article the generalization of this phase for N=2 supersymmetric abelian theories is identified, using a dual description. Topologically stable BPS-saturated and unsaturated particle and string solitons play essential roles. A plasma of chiral monopoles of charge 1 and -1 (along with their antichiral conjugates) are required for a stable confining vacuum. N=2 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory broken to U(1) l…
I discuss "truncated" QCD studied recently by Glozman et al. through numerical simulations. For two flavors it was observed that truncation restores the full chiral U(2)\times U(2) symmetry of the Lagrangian. Moreover, additional enhancement of the above symmetry connecting representations with distinct Lorentz spins was observed. I argue that the chiral symmetry restoration in a confining theory could entail emergent (extra) dynamical flavors which would show up in the spectrum of color-singlet particles provided their mass \neq 0. As an example, I consider truncated QCD with a single massles…
The Dual Meissner Effect description of QCD in the confining region provides $\frac{1}{q^4}$ behaviour for the gluon propagator and involves the dual gluon mass $m$ as a parameter. This is used in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quarks in the infrared region to exhibit chiral symmetry breaking for light quarks. Using the light quark condensate as input, the dual gluon mass is determined and its importance in showing the asymptotic free behaviour of the extrinsic curvature coupling in the rigid QCD string is discussed.
We study the response of confining gauge theory to the external electric field by using holographic Yang-Mills theories in the large $N_c$ limit. Although the theories are in the confinement phase, we find a transition from the insulator to the conductor phase when the electric field exceeds its critical value. Then, the baryon number current is generated in the conductor phase. At the same time, in this phase, the meson melting is observed through the quasi-normal modes of meson spectrum. Possible ideas are given for the string state corresponding to the melted mesons, and they lead to the id…
We explore the possible low energy phases of the confining non-supersymmetric $SU(5)$ chiral gauge theory with three generations of fermions in the $(10+\bar{5})$ representations. This theory has the same fermion and gauge matter content as the simplest Georgi-Glashow grand unified theory of the Standard Model and has an $SU(3)\times SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry. Using 't Hooft anomaly matching, most attractive channel, and soft SUSY breaking approaches, we outline a number of possible consistent low energy vacua including one with a remnant $SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry that is analogous t…
Utilizing the known off-shell formulation of 2D, N = (2,2) supergravity, containing a finite number of auxiliary fields, there is shown to exist a simple form for a 'chiral projection operator' and an explicit expression for it is given.
The folklore tradition about the QCD phase diagram is that at the chiral restoration phase transition at finite density hadrons are deconfined and there appears the quark matter. We address this question within the only known exactly solvable confining and chirally symmetric model. It is postulated within this model that there exists linear Coulomb-like confining interaction. The chiral symmetry breaking and the quark Green function are obtained from the Schwinger-Dyson (gap) equation while the color-singlet meson spectrum results from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We solve this model at T=0 an…
We explore 4-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with a Weyl fermion in an irreducible self-conjugate representation. This theory, in general, has a discrete chiral symmetry. We use 't Hooft anomaly matching condition of the center symmetry and the chiral symmetry, and find constraints on the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the confining phase. The domain-walls connecting different vacua are discussed from the point of view of the 't Hooft anomaly. We consider the SU(6) gauge theory with a Weyl fermion in the rank 3 anti-symmetric representation as an example. It is argued that this theory …
We derive analytically the terms of maximal transcendality of the planar 2- and 3-point functions of single-trace chiral primary operators of ${\cal N}=2$ SQCD on $\bR^4$, to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling. These results prove two conjectures we formulated in previous work. Furthermore, we also provide an explicit expression for the terms in the planar 2-point functions of these operators that contain products of two values of the $ζ$ function.
We expand on an idea of Seiberg that an N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory shows confinement without breaking of chiral symmetry when the gauge symmetry of its magnetic dual is completely broken by the Higgs effect. This has recently been applied to some models involving tensor fields and an appropriate tree-level superpotential. We show how the confining spectrum of a supersymmetric gauge theory can easily be derived when a magnetic dual is known and we determine it explicitly for many models containing fields in second rank tensor representations. We also give the form of the confining superpot…
The possibility for existence of cold, dense chirally symmetric matter with confinement is reviewed. The answer to this question crucially depends on the mechanism of mass generation in QCD and interconnection of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. This question can be clarified from spectroscopy of hadrons and their axial properties. Almost systematical parity doubling of highly excited hadrons suggests that their mass is not related to chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and is approximately chirally symmetric. Then there is a possibility for existence of confining but chirally symm…
In this talk I review and generalize an idea of Seiberg that an N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory shows confinement without breaking of chiral symmetry when the gauge symmetry of its magnetic dual is completely broken by the Higgs effect. It is shown how the confining spectrum of a supersymmetric gauge theory can easily be derived when a magnetic dual is known and this method is applied to many models containing fields in second rank tensor representations and an appropriate tree-level superpotential.
In this paper we investigate N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with a product gauge group. By using smoothly confining dynamics, we can find new dualities which include higher-rank tensor fields, and in which the dual gauge group is simple, not a product. Some of them are dualities between chiral and non-chiral gauge theories. We also discuss some applications to dynamical supersymmetry breaking phenomena and new confining theories with a tree-level superpotential.
We examine a large N duality via geometric transition for N=1 SO/Sp gauge theories with superpotential for adjoint chiral superfield. In this paper, we find that the large N gauge theories are exactly analyzed for the classical quartic superpotentials by the finite rank SO/Sp gauge theories. With this classical superpotentials, we evaluate the confining phase superpotentials using the Seiberg-Witten theory. In the dual theory, we calculate the superpotential generated by the R-R and NS-NS 3-form fluxes. As the non-trivial examples, we discuss for SO(6), SO(8) and Sp(4) gauge theories. In these…
We investigate, by numerical lattice simulations, the static quark-antiquark potential, the flux tube properties and the chiral condensate for $N_f = 2+1$ QCD with physical quark masses in the presence of strong magnetic fields, going up to $eB = 9$ GeV$^2$, with continuum extrapolated results. The string tension for quark-antiquark separations longitudinal to the magnetic field is suppressed by one order of magnitude at the largest explored magnetic field with respect to its value at zero magnetic background, but is still non-vanishing; in the transverse direction, instead, the string tension…
Casher's argument, which is believed to be quite general, states that in the confining regime chiral symmetry is necessarily broken. In the large-N_c limit and at moderate and low temperatures QCD is confining up to arbitrary large densities, and there should appear a quarkyonic matter. It has been demonstrated, within a manifestly confining and chirally symmetric model, which is a 3+1 dimensional generalization of the 't Hooft model, that, at zero temperature and at a density exceeding a critical one, the chiral symmetry is restored while quarks remain confined in color-singlet hadrons. This …
In this work the solution generated by performing a U-duality on a deformation of the Maldacena-Nastase solution is studied. This is a solution of type-IIA with a metric that is asymptotically AdS4 and supports a G2 structure. It is believed to be dual to a 2+1d, N=1 gauge theory similar to the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler with an additional intermediate scale. An improved radial coordinate is used allowing the derivation of UV series solutions to the BPS equation that persist to all orders. A study of the properties of the dual field theory is performed which includes an operator ana…

Chiral U(1) anomaly is derived with mathematical rigor for a Euclidean fermion coupled to a smooth external U(1) gauge field on an even dimensional torus as a continuum limit of lattice regularized fermion field theory with the Wilson term in the action. The present work rigorously proves for the first time that the Wilson term correctly reproduces the chiral anomaly.
Starting from the Henneaux-Teitelboim action for a chiral scalar, which generalizes to curved space the Floreanini-Jackiw action, we give two simple derivations of the exact consistent gravitational anomaly. The first derivation is through the Schwinger-DeWitt regularization. The second exploits cohomological methods and uses the fact that in dimension two the diffeomorphism transformations are described by a single ghost which allows to climb the cohomological chain in a unique way.
We study a deformation of N=2 supersymmetric QCD with U(N) gauge group and N_f quark flavors induced by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter which breaks supersymmetry down to N=1 QCD. Recently this deformation was shown to lead to a weakly coupled dual theory only in two particular sets of vacua: the r=N vacuum and the so-called zero vacua which can be found at r< N_f-N, where r is the number of condensed quarks. For small quark masses and intermediate values of μthe gauge group of the dual theory is U(N_f-N)\times U(1)^{2N-N_f} where the Abelian sector is heavy and can be integrated out. Ho…
A fast restoration of chiral symmetry in excited mesons is demonstrated. A minimal "realistic" chirally symmetric confining model is used, where the only interaction between quarks is the linear instantaneous Lorentz-vector confining potential. Chiral symmetry breaking is generated via the nonperturbative resummation of valence quarks self-energy loops and the meson bound states are obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The excited mesons fall into approximate chiral multiplets and lie on the approximately linear radial and angular Regge trajectories, though a significant deviation from t…
In the world line representation of the fermionic effective action for QCD the interaction between Fermions and the gauge field is contained in the fermionic Wilson loop, namely the Wilson loop for a spin-half particle. It is argued that a string representation of the fermionic Wilson loop can provide a link connecting QCD with a dual description of a meson as a quark and an antiquark connected by a string. This is illustrated by obtaining such a representation in compact U(1) gauge theories. The resulting description contains information about the interaction of the spin of the quark with the…
We present results of a study of the Chiral Separation Effect (CSE) in quenched finite-density QCD. Using a recently developed numerical method we calculate the conserved axial current for exactly chiral overlap fermions at finite density for the first time. We compute the anomalous transport coefficient for the CSE in the confining and de-confining phase and investigate possible deviations from the universal value. In both phases we find that non-perturbative corrections to the CSE are absent and we reproduce the universal value for the transport coefficient within small statistical errors. O…
A previous formal derivation of the effective chiral Lagrangian for low-lying pseudoscalar mesons from first-principles QCD without approximations [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. D61, (2000) 54011] is generalized to further include scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. In the large Nc limit and with an Abelian approximation, we show that the properties of the newly added mesons in our formalism are determined by the corresponding underlying fundamental homogeneous Bethe--Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation, which yields the equations of motion for the scalar, vector, and axial-vector mes…
We study two-dimensional, large $N$ field theoretic models (Gross-Neveu model, 't Hooft model) at finite baryon density near the chiral limit. The same mechanism which leads to massless baryons in these models induces a breakdown of translational invariance at any finite density. In the chiral limit baryonic matter is characterized by a spatially varying chiral angle with a wave number depending only on the density. For small bare quark masses a sine-Gordon kink chain is obtained which may be regarded as simplest realization of the Skyrme crystal for nuclear matter. Characteristic differences …

We consider a general framework to study holographically the dynamics of fundamental quarks in a confining gauge theory. Flavors are introduced by placing a set of (coincident) branes and antibranes on a background dual to a confining color theory. The spectrum contains an open string tachyon and its condensation describes the U(N_f)_L x U(N_f)_R -> U(N_f)_V symmetry breaking. By studying worldvolume gauge transformations of the flavor brane action, we obtain the QCD global anomalies and an IR condition that allows to fix the quark condensate in terms of the quark mass. We find the expected N_…
The symmetries and dynamics of simple chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories, with matter Weyl fermions in a two-index symmetric tensor and $N+4$ anti-fundamental representations, are examined, by taking advantage of the recent developments involving the ideas of generalized symmetries, gauging of discrete center 1-form symmetries and mixed 't Hooft anomalies. This class of models are particularly interesting because the conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching constraints allow a chirally symmetric confining vacuum, with no condensates breaking the $U(1) \times SU(N+4)$ flavor symmetry, and with certain…
We give necessary criteria for N=1 supersymmetric theories to be in a smoothly confining phase without chiral symmetry breaking and with a dynamically generated superpotential. Using our general arguments we find all such confining SU and Sp theories with a single gauge group and no tree level superpotential.
We study symmetries and dynamics of chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories with matter Weyl fermions in a two-index symmetric ($ψ$) or anti-symmetric tensor ($χ$) representation, together with $N \pm 4 + p $ fermions in the anti-fundamental ($η$) and $p$ fermions in the fundamental ($ξ$) representations. They are known as the Bars-Yankielowicz (the former) and the generalized Georgi-Glashow models (the latter). The conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching algorithm is known to allow a confining, chirally symmetric vacuum in all these models, with a simple set of massless baryonlike composite fermions des…
We show that the on-shell effective theory (OSEFT) is the quantum field theory counterpart of a Foldy-Wouthuysen diagonalization of relativistic quantum mechanics for massless fermions. Thus, it is free of the Zitterbewegung oscillations that would yield an ill-defined meaning to the semiclassical transport approach at short distances if derived from the pure Dirac picture. We present a detailed derivation of the collision terms in the chiral kinetic theory using the OSEFT. Collision integrals are derived up to order 1/E, where E is the energy of an on-shell fermion. At this order, the collisi…
We show that the entanglement of purification and the critical distance between the two mixed systems is a powerful measure in probing the phase structures of QCD and confining backgrounds, as it can distinguish the scale of chiral symmetry breaking versus the scale of confinement/deconfinement phase transitions. For two symmetric strips with equal and finite width and infinite length, and in the background of several confining geometries, we numerically calculate the critical distance between them where the mutual information vanishes and show that this quantity can probe the very rich phase …
We revisit the singular IIB supergravity solution describing M fractional 3-branes on the conifold [hep-th/0002159]. Its 5-form flux decreases, which we explain by showing that the relevant \NN=1 SUSY SU(N+M)xSU(N) gauge theory undergoes repeated Seiberg-duality transformations in which N -> N-M. Far in the IR the gauge theory confines; its chiral symmetry breaking removes the singularity of hep-th/0002159 by deforming the conifold. We propose a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual to the field theory on all scales, with small curvature everywhere if the `t Hooft coupling g_s M is la…
Expanding upon earlier work of Pouliot and Strassler, we construct chiral magnetic duals to nonchiral supersymmetric electric theories based upon SO(7), SO(8) and SO(9) gauge groups with various numbers of vector and spinor matter superfields. Anomalies are matched and gauge invariant operators are mapped within each dual pair. Renormalization group flows along flat directions are also examined. We find that confining phase quantum constraints in the electric theories are recovered from semiclassical equations of motion in their magnetic counterparts when the dual gauge groups are completely H…
We investigate the low energy structure of the Kahler potential in SUSY QCD with Nf=Nc+1 quark flavors. Since this theory's moduli space is everywhere smooth, a systematic power series expansion of its Kahler potential can be developed in terms of confined meson and baryon fields. Perturbation theory in the supersymmetric sigma model based upon a momentum expansion consistent with naive dimensional analysis and 1/Nf power counting exhibits some similarities with ordinary QCD chiral perturbation theory along with several key differences. We compute meson and baryon wavefunction renormalization …
We give a theoretical framework to obtain a low-energy effective theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) towards a first-principle derivation of confinement/deconfinement and chiral-symmetry breaking/restoration crossover transitions. In fact, we demonstrate that an effective theory obtained using simple but non-trivial approximations within this framework enables us to treat both transitions simultaneously on equal footing. A resulting effective theory is regarded as a modified and improved version of nonlocal Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (nonlocal PNJL) models proposed recently b…
We study the spectrum of the confining strings in four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories. We compute, for the SU(4) and SU(6) gauge theories formulated on a lattice, the string tensions sigma_k related to sources with Z_N charge k, using Monte Carlo simulations. Our results are consistent with the sine formula sigma_k/sigma = sin k pi/N / sin pi/N for the ratio between sigma_k and the standard string tension sigma. For the SU(4) and SU(6) cases the accuracy is approximately 1% and 2%, respectively. The sine formula is known to emerge in various realizations of supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theorie…
In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) the eigenmodes of the Dirac operator with small absolute eigenvalues have a close relationship to the dynamical breaking of the chiral symmetry. In a simulation with two dynamical quarks, we study the behavior of meson propagators when removing increasingly more of those modes in the valence sector, thus partially removing effects of chiral symmetry breaking. We find that some of the symmetry aspects are restored (e.g., the masses of $ρ$ and $a_1$ approach each other) while confining properties persist.
We discuss generalizations of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih (ISS) vacua to chiral models. We study one example, of an s-confining theory, in detail. In the IR, this example reduces to two ISS-like sectors, and exhibits a supersymmetry-breaking vacuum with all pseudo-moduli stabilized at the origin, and with the R-symmetry unbroken. The IR theory is interesting from the point of view of R-symmetry breaking. This theory is an O'Raifeartaigh model with all charges zero or two, but the presence of a second R-charged pseudo-modulus with superpotential couplings to the messengers in principle allows for…
The review of vacuum and matter restructuring in space-time with boundaries is presented. We consider phase properties of confining gauge theories and strongly interacting fermion systems. In particular, the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions properties in the presence of Casimir plates. We also discuss mass scale shifts in such systems and their possible dynamical and geometrical nature.
We show that new nonperturbative scales exist in four-dimensional ${\cal{N}}$$=$$1$ super-Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle, with an iterated-exponential dependence on the inverse gauge coupling. The lightest states with the quantum numbers of four-dimensional glueballs are nonrelativistic bound states of dual Cartan gluons and superpartners, with binding energy equal to $e^{- e^{1/g^2}}$ in units of the confining mass gap. Focusing on $SU(2)$ gauge group, we construct the nonrelativistic effective theory, show that the lightest glueball/glueballino states fill a chiral supermultiplet…
Monopole operators play a central role in 3 dimensional supersymmetric dualities: a careful understanding of their spectrum is necessary to match chiral operators on either sides of a conjectured duality. In Chern-Simons theories ($k\neq0$), monopole operators acquire an electric charge, thus they need to be "dressed" by chiral matter superfields to be made gauge-invariant. Here we present strong evidence that "dressed" monopoles appear in $SU(N)$ chiral theories even for $k=0$ because of mixed CS terms generated along certain Coulomb branch directions. Our analysis is based on the dimensional…
General Fierz-type identities are examined and their well known connection with completeness relations in matrix vector spaces is shown. In particular, I derive the chiral Fierz identities in a simple and systematic way by using a chiral basis for the complex $4\times4$ matrices. Other completeness relations for the fundamental representations of SU(N) algebras can be extracted using the same reasoning.
