Starting from a quantum description of multiple Lambda-type 3-level atoms driven with a coherent microwave field and incoherent optical pumping, we derive a microscopic model of lasing from which we move towards a consistent macroscopic picture. Our analysis applies across the range of system sizes from nanolasers to the thermodynamic limit of conventional lasing. We explore the necessary conditions to achieve lasing without inversion by calculating the non-equilibrium steady state solutions of the model at, and between, its microscopic and macroscopic limits. For the macroscopic picture, we use mean-field theory to present a thorough analysis of the lasing phase transition. In the microscopic case, we exploit the underlying permutation symmetry of the density matrix to calculate exact solutions for N 3-level systems. This allows us to show that the steady state solutions approach the thermodynamic limit as N increases, restoring the sharp non-equilibrium phase transition in this limit. We demonstrate how the lasing phase transition and degree of population inversion can be adjusted by simply varying the phase of the coherent driving field. The high level of quantum control presented by this microscopic model and the framework outlined here have applications to further understanding and developing nanophotonic technology.
We show lasing without population inversion in a closed four-level atomic system which is no longer incoherently pumped on the transition at which lasing occurs. The four-level system can overcome some limits in the typical lambda-type and V-type three-level systems, furthermore it is possible to achieve lasing even in the absence of the inversion condition for the thermal radiation fields or of the inversion of spontaneous decay rate. We find that when the detuning of probe field is equal to that of coherent coupling field, there is a peak value along with the increase of the detuning. To exp…
We have observed CW lasing without inversion in a gas of hot rubidium atoms in an optical cavity under conditions of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). The medium is pumped coherently and resonantly by a single ``coupling'' beam which also produces EIT in the lasing transition. The steady-state intensity exhibits thresholds as a function of the atomic density and the strength of the coupling beam. A theoretical model for an effective three-level lambda system indicates that gain without inversion is possible in this system if the two ground states are coupled by depolarizing colli…
A theory of lasing in an optically thin layer of active centers disposed at a metal surface is developed from first principles. The approach is based on a rigorous account of the local field in a close vicinity of a reflective surface which provides a feedback for dipole oscillations in active centers. It is demonstrated that the gain medium thickness plays a crucial role in the lasing condition and controls a switching from conventional lasing to lasing without inversion. The numerical calculations are carried out for erbium doped glass bordering a gold surface where radiation at telecom wave…
We study the photon generation in a transmission line oscillator coupled to a driven qubit in the presence of a dissipative electromagnetic environment. It has been demonstrated previously that a population inversion in the qubit may lead to a lasing state of the oscillator. Here we show that the circuit can also exhibit the effect of "lasing without inversion". This is possible since the coupling to the dissipative environment enhances photon emission as compared to absorption, similar to the recoil effect which was predicted for atomic systems. While the recoil effect is very weak, and so fa…
We suggest a method to generate coherent short pulses by generating a frequency comb using lasing without inversion in the transient regime. We use a universal method to study the propagation of a pulse in various spectral regions through an active medium that is strongly driven on a low-frequency transition on a time scale shorter than the decoherence time. The results show gain on the sidebands at different modes can be produced even if there is no initial population inversion prepared. Besides the production of ultra-short pulse this frequency comb may have applications towards making short…
We investigate the feasibility of UV lasing without inversion at a wavelength of $253.7$ nm utilizing interacting dark resonances in mercury vapor. Our theoretical analysis starts with radiation damped optical Bloch equations for all relevant 13 atomic levels. These master equations are generalized by considering technical phase noise of the driving lasers. From the Doppler broadened complex susceptibility we obtain the stationary output power from semiclassical laser theory. The finite overlap of the driving Gaussian laser beams defines an ellipsoidal inhomogeneous gain distribution. Therefor…
In this work we report a quantum interference mediated control of the resonance profiles in a generic three-level system and investigate its effect on key quantum interference (QI) phenomena. Namely in a three level configuration with doublets in the ground or excited states, we show control over enhancement and suppression of the emission (absorption) profiles. This is achieved by manipulation of the strength of QI and the energy spacing of the doublets. We analyze the application of such QI induced control of the resonance profile in the framework of two limiting cases of lasing without inve…
With the purpose to devise a novel lasing scheme, we consider a two level system with both a transversal and longitudinal coupling to the electromagnetic field. If the longitudinal coupling is sufficiently strong, multi-photon transitions become possible. We assume furthermore that the electromagnetic environment has a spectrum with a single sharp resonance, which serves as a lasing cavity. Additionally, the electromagnetic environment should have a very broad resonance around a frequency which differs form the sharp resonance. We use the polaron transformation and derive a rate equation to de…
Excitons bound to flourine atoms in ZnSe have the potential for several quantum optical applications. Examples include optically accessible quantum memories for quantum information processing and lasing without inversion. These applications require the bound-exciton transitions to be coupled to cavities with high cooperativity factors, which results in the experimental observation of low-threshold lasing. We report such lasing from fluorine-doped ZnSe quantum wells in 3 and 6 micron microdisk cavities. Photoluminescence and selective photoluminescence spectroscopy confirm that the lasing is du…
An influence of nonlinear interference processes at quantum transitions under strong resonance electromagnetic fields on absorption, amplification and refractive indices as well as on four-wave mixing processes is investigated. Doppler broadening of the coupled transitions, incoherent excitation, relaxation processes, as well as power saturation processes associated with the coupled levels are taken into account. Both closed (ground state is involved) and open (only excited states are involved) energy level configurations are considered. Common expressions are obtained which allow one to analy…
Recent advances in near-field plasmonic metamaterials, such as nanoresonators or transducers, have demonstrated the ability to generate localized fields of high intensity, and thus maintain relatively large nanoscale heat gradients on the order of $10^1-10^2$~K/nm. A plasmonic near-field transducer (NFT) can achieve such large gradients, making population inversion achievable within phononic media. We herein develop a thermal nanomachine composed of a nanoscale phononic laser using InGaAs quantum dot media where an NFT serves as the plasmonic energy source. We show, on demand, the generation o…
Simultaneous strong coherent pumping of the two transitions of a V-level atom with very differentdecay rates has been predicted to create almost perfect inversion on the narrower transition. Usingthe example of the blue and red transitions in Strontium we show that for suitable operatingconditions the corresponding resonant gain can be used to continuously operate a laser on thenarrow transition. In particular, for a strong detuning of the pump field with respect to the narrowtransition, coherent laser emission occurs close to the bare atomic transition frequency exhibitingonly a negligible co…
We present a microscopic theory describing the stimulated scattering of intersubband polariton excitations in a microcavity-embedded two-dimensional electron gas. In particular, we consider the polariton scattering induced by the spontaneous emission of optical phonons. Our theory demonstrates the possibility of final-state stimulation for the scattering of such composite excitations, accounting for the deviations from perfect bosonicity occurring at high excitation densities. By using realistic parameters for a GaAs semiconductor system, we predict how to achieve a quantum degenerate regime, …
We prove that coherent perfect absorption (CPA) without lasing is {\bf not} possible in the PT-symmetric domain as the s-matrix is such that $|\det S(\pm k)|=1$. We study coherent scattering from three complex potentials, one solved analytically and the other two numerically. We conjecture that in the domain of unbroken symmetry (when the potential has real discrete spectrum) neither spectral singularity nor CPA can occur. We show that Scarf II potential is a special model that can analytically and explicitly exhibit these as well as other novel phenomena and their subtleties. \pacs{03.65-w, 0…
Despite the enormous technological interest in micro and nanolasers, surprisingly, no class-B quantum density-matrix model is available to date, capable of accurately describing coherence and photon correlations within a unified theory. In class-B lasers $-$applicable for most solid-state lasers at room temperature$-$, the macroscopic polarization decay rate is larger than the cavity damping rate which, in turn, exceeds the upper level population decay rate. Here we carry out a density-matrix theoretical approach for generic class-B lasers, and provide closed equations for the photonic and ato…
Doppler-free three-photon coherence effects at a wavelength of 253.7 nm have been observed in thermal mercury vapor. The experimental results are compared to simulations based on a detailed theoretical model reproducing the measured effects. Based on these results, we show by simulations that amplification without inversion in our setup is feasible, paving the way towards lasing without inversion in mercury.
The quantum statistics of the light in the transparent medium with cubic nonlinearity is considered. Two types of transparent media are treated, namely, the cold transparent medium with a ground working level and the inversion-free medium with the lasing levels of the same population. The spectra of light fluctuation are found on the basis of both Scully-Lamb and Haken theories. The conditions for the use of effective Hamiltonian are determined. Basing on the exact solution of the Fokker-Plank equation for the Glauber-Sudarshan P-function the inversion-free medium with cubic nonlinearity is sh…
In this work, we use the quantum-jump approach to study light-matter interactions in a four-level scheme giving rise to frequency up-conversion amplification without inversion (AWI). The results obtained apply to the case of neutral Hg vapour where, recently, it has been reported AWI of a probe field in the UV regime, opening the way for lasing without inversion in this range of frequencies. We show that, in this scheme, the key element to obtain maximum amplification is the fulfillment of the three-photon resonance condition, which favors coherent evolution periods associated with the probe f…
We consider the fundamental problem of high temperature phase transitions in the system of high density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of atomic DSs thermalization pr…
A laser model is formulated in terms of quantum harmonic oscillators. Emitters in the low lasing states are usual harmonic oscillators, and emitters in the upper states are inverted harmonic oscillators. Diffusion coefficients, consistent with the model and necessary for solving quantum nonlinear laser equations analytically, are found. Photon number fluctuations of the lasing mode and fluctuations of the population of the lasing states are calculated. Collective Rabi splitting peaks are predicted in the intensity fluctuation spectra of the superradiant lasers. Population fluctuation mechanism…
We develop a full quantum-optical approach for optical self-feedback of a microcavity laser. These miniaturized devices work in a regime between the quantum and classical limit and are test-beds for the differences between a quantized theory of optical self-feedback and the corresponding semiclassical theory. The light intensity and photon statistics are investigated with and without an external feedback: We show that in the low-gain limit, where relaxation oscillations do not appear, the recently observed photon bunching in a quantum dot microcavity laser with optical feedback can be accounte…

Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. Calculated photon emission…
Light induced absorption with population inversion and amplification without population inversion (LWI) in a coherently prepared closed three level V - type system are investigated. This study is performed from the point of view of a two color dressed state basis. Both of these processes are possible due to atomic coherence and quantum interference contrary to simple intuitive predictions. Merely on physical basis, one would expect a complementary process to the amplification without inversion. We believe that absorption in the presence of population inversion found in the dressed state pictur…
We present a theoretical description for a lasing scheme for atoms with three internal levels in a $V$-configuration and interacting with an optical cavity. The use of a $V$-level system allows for an efficient closed lasing cycle to be sustained on a dipole-forbidden transition without the need for incoherent repumping. This is made possible by utilizing an additional dipole-allowed transition. We determine the lasing threshold and emission frequency by performing a stability analysis of the non-lasing solution. In the lasing regime, we use a mean-field Floquet method (MFFM) to calculate the …
For a quantum system with broken parity symmetry, selection rules can not hold and cyclic transition structures are generated. With these loop-transitions we discuss how to achieve inversionless gain of the probe field by properly setting the control and auxiliary fields. Possible implementations of our generic proposal with specific physical objects with broken parities, e.g., superconducting circuits and chiral molecules, are also discussed.
We have observed clear Rabi oscillations of a weak probe in a strongly driven three-level lambda system in laser-cooled rubidium for the first time. When the coupling field is non-adiabatically switched on using a Pockels cell, transient probe gain without population inversion is obtained in the presence of uncoupled absorptions. Our results are supported by three-state computations.
We design fast bias inversions of an asymmetric double well so that the lowest states in each well remain so and free from residual motional excitation. This cannot be done adiabatically, and a sudden bias switch produces in general motional excitation. The residual excitation is suppressed by complementing a predetermined fast bias change with a linear ramp whose time-dependent slope compensates for the displacement of the wells. The process, combined with vibrational multiplexing and demultiplexing, can produce vibrational state inversion without exciting internal states, just by deforming t…
We show that electromagnetically-induced transparency and lasing without inversion are simultaneously achieved for microwave fields by using a fluxonium superconducting circuit. As a result of the $Δ$ energy-level structure of this artificial three-level atom, we find the surprising phenomenon that the electromagnetically-induced transparency window in the frequency domain is sandwiched between absorption on one side and amplification on the other side.
We discuss an opportunity to achieve amplification without inversion in three-level cascade scheme using an effective unidirectional pumping via bidirectional incoherent pump. Analytical solution to the population and the coherence are obtained in the steady-state regime. With a proper choice of the parameters, obtained here, the possibility for amplification without inversion is presented.
We study gain without inversion due to coherence effects in a Doppler-broadened degenerate three-level system of a rubidium-hydrogen mixture in a miniaturized micron scale custom vapor cell. The cell miniaturization gives rise to collisions of atoms with the walls of the cell. This, combined with the high collision rate with the hydrogen buffer gas allows us to observe gain in the absorption spectra. Furthermore, we analyze the role of cell miniaturization in the evolution of the gain profile. In addition to fundamental interest, the observation of gain without inversion in our miniaturized ce…
We propose a geometric {approach to Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for} quantum many-body systems with discrete spin-rotation symmetries and lattice inversion or rotation symmetry, but without translation symmetry assumed. Under symmetry-twisting on a $(d-1)$-dimensional plane, we find that any $d$-dimensional inversion-symmetric spin system possesses a doubly degenerate spectrum when it hosts a half-integer spin at the inversion-symmetric point. We also show that any rotation-symmetric generalized spin model with a projective representation at the rotation center has a similar degeneracy under s…
