The precise control and knowledge over the atomic dynamics is central to the advancement of quantum technology. The different experimental conditions namely, atoms in a vacuum, an anti-relaxation coated and a buffer gas filled atomic cell provides complementary platform for such investigations. The extent of changes in optical pumping, velocity changing collision and hyperfine changing collision rates associated with these conditions are discussed. There is a phenomenal change in the optical density by a factor of >25 times in presence of a control field in buffer gas environment. In contrary to earlier reports, we found confinement induced enhanced optical pumping as the mechanism behind the observed transparency in buffer gas cell. The feeble interplay of radiation trapping under specific conditions are pointed out. The diffusive velocity of atoms is measured to be ~25+-12 m/s and <= 8+-4 m/s for anti-relaxation coated and buffer gas filled cell respectively. The studies will have useful application in measurements of relaxation rates, quantum memory, quantum repeaters and atomic devices.
The hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) atomic magnetometers can realize ultrahigh sensitivity measurement of magnetic field and inertia. We have studied the $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization of two types of hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometers based on $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He and $^{\text{133}}$Cs-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He respectively. Then we found that $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization varies with the number density of buffer gas $^{\text{4}}$He and quench gas N$_{\text{2}}$, pumping rate of pump beam and cell temperature respectively, w…
We consider the degree of conservation of nuclear spin polarization in the process of optical pumping under typical spin-exchange optical pumping conditions. Previous analyses have assumed that negligible nuclear spin precession occurs in the brief periods of time the alkali-metal atoms are in the excited state after absorbing photons and before undergoing quenching collisions with nitrogen molecules. We include excited-state hyperfine interactions, electronic spin relaxation in collisions with He and N_2, spontaneous emission, quenching collisions, and a simplified treatment of radiation trap…
We present the results of a study on relaxation and diffusion processes of rubidium atoms in a rubidium cell with an internal vapor source. The cell is an evacuated glass bulb, which is characterized in that the source of atomic vapors in the form of a metal film Rb is evenly distributed throughout the inner surface of the bulb, and the paraffin film is uniformly distributed over the entire area and over the metal surface. By using laser optical pumping, we performed measurements of the relaxation time and the average number of bounces of optical pumped rubidium atoms in the bulb. We have meas…
We report high steady-state nuclear polarization of 1 torr $^3$He gas nuclei via metastability-exchange optical pumping at magnetic fields above 2 T. The introduction of highly polarized $^3$He gas into Brookhaven's Electron Beam Ion Source would enable a new, polarized $^3$He ion source for use at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and a future Electron-Ion Collider facility. By adapting recent developments in high field metastability-exchange optical pumping for higher pressure gas, we have successfully polarized 1 torr $^3$He sealed cells in the EBIS solenoid. Through careful manipulation …
We have developed a versatile pulsed laser system for high precision magnetometry. The operating wavelength of the system can be configured to optically pump alkali vapors such as rubidium and cesium. The laser system consists of an auto-locked, interference filter stabilized, external cavity diode laser (ECDL), a tapered waveguide amplifier, and a pulsing module. The auto-locking controller can be used by an untrained operator to stabilize the laser frequency with respect to a library of atomic, molecular, and solid-state spectral markers. The ECDL output can be amplified from 20 mW to 2 W in…
We report on hyperpolarization of quadrupolar (I=3/2) 131Xe via spin-exchange optical pumping. Observations of the 131Xe polarization dynamics show that the effective alkali-metal/131Xe spin-exchange cross-sections are large enough to compete with 131Xe spin relaxation. 131Xe polarization up to 7.6 p/m 1.5 percent was achieved in ca. 8.5EE20 spins--a ca. 100-fold improvement in the total spin angular momentum--enabling applications including measurement of spin-dependent neutron-131Xe s-wave scattering and sensitive searches for time-reversal violation in neutron-131Xe interactions beyond the …
We present efficient theoretical tools for describing the optical pumping of atoms by light propagating at arbitrary directions with respect to an external magnetic field, at buffer-gas pressures that are small enough for velocity-selective optical pumping (VSOP) but large enough to cause substantial collisional relaxation of the velocities and the spin. These are the conditions for the sodium atoms at an altitude of about 100 km that are used as guidestars for adaptive optics in modern ground-based telescopes to correct for aberrations due to atmospheric turbulence. We use spin and velocity r…
Results of a fairly straightforward experiment on resonant magneto-optical rotation by rubidium-87 atoms revealed strong time-dependence of the polarization plane of light emerging from atomic vapors following a sudden irradiation with a laser beam. The rotation of the plane appears as a not direct consequence of the influence of the magnetic field on atoms. Reported measurements conducted using a vapor cell without any buffer gas or an anti-relaxation wall coating show that transmitted light has initially the same (linear) polarization as the incident one. Rotation of the polarization plane c…
Efficient optical pumping is an important tool for state initialization in quantum technologies, such as optical quantum memories. In crystals doped with Kramers rare-earth ions, such as erbium and neodymium, efficient optical pumping is challenging due to the relatively short population lifetimes of the electronic Zeeman levels, of the order of 100 ms at around 4 K. In this article we show that optical pumping of the hyperfine levels in isotopically enriched $^{145}$Nd$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystals is more efficient, owing to the longer population relaxation times of hyperfine levels. By optic…

We have carried out theoretical research on ultra-high resolution spectroscopy of atoms (or molecules) in the suggested cell with a series of plane-parallel thin gas layers between spatially separated gas regions of this cell for optical pumping and probing. It is shown the effective velocity selection of optically pumped atoms because of their specific transit time and collisional relaxation in such a cell, which lead to narrow sub-Doppler resonances in absorption of the probe monochromatic light beam. Resolution of this spectroscopic method is analyzed in cases of stationary and definite non…
Quantum state-resolved spectroscopy was recently achieved for C60 molecules when cooled by buffer gas collisions and probed with a midinfrared frequency comb. This rovibrational quantum state resolution for the largest molecule on record is facilitated by the remarkable symmetry and rigidity of C60, which also present new opportunities and challenges to explore energy transfer between quantum states in this many-atom system. Here we combine state-specific optical pumping, buffer gas collisions, and ultrasensitive intracavity nonlinear spectroscopy to initiate and probe the rotation-vibration e…
Exceptional points (EPs) are exotic degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems, where the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors simultaneously coalesce in parameter space, and these degeneracies are sensitive to tiny perturbations on the system. Here we report an experimental observation of the EP in a hybrid quantum system consisting of dense nitrogen (P1) centers in diamond coupled to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. These P1 centers can be divided into three subensembles of spins, and cross relaxation occurs among them. As a new method to demonstrate this EP, we pump a given spin subense…
We present the development of high-performance polarized $^3\mathrm{He}$ targets for use in electron scattering experiments that utilize the technique of alkali-hybrid spin-exchange optical pumping. We include data obtained during the characterization of 24 separate target cells, each of which was constructed while preparing for one of four experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News, Virginia. The results presented here document dramatic improvement in the performance of polarized $^3\mathrm{He}$ targets, as well as the target properties and operating parameters that made those improv…
