This document describes a noise generator that simulates realistic noise found in smartphone cameras. The generator simulates Poissonian-Gaussian noise whose parameters have been estimated on the Smartphone Image Denoising Dataset (SIDD). The generator is available online, and is currently being used in compressed-domain denoising exploration experiments in JPEG AI.
We propose a simple method for estimating noise level from a single color image. In most image-denoising algorithms, an accurate noise-level estimate results in good denoising performance; however, it is difficult to estimate noise level from a single image because it is an ill-posed problem. We tackle this problem by using prior knowledge that textures are highly correlated between RGB channels and noise is uncorrelated to other signals. We also extended our method for RAW images because they are available in almost all digital cameras and often used in practical situations. Experiments show …
Robust segmentation of hair from portrait images remains challenging: hair does not conform to a uniform shape, style or even color; dark hair in particular lacks features. We present a novel computational imaging solution that tackles the problem from both input and processing fronts. We explore using Time-of-Flight (ToF) RGBD sensors on recent mobile devices. We first conduct a comprehensive analysis to show that scattering and inter-reflection cause different noise patterns on hair vs. non-hair regions on ToF images, by changing the light path and/or combining multiple paths. We then develo…
Recent research on learning a mapping between raw Bayer images and RGB images has progressed with the development of deep convolutional neural networks. A challenging data set namely the Zurich Raw-to-RGB data set (ZRR) has been released in the AIM 2019 raw-to-RGB mapping challenge. In ZRR, input raw and target RGB images are captured by two different cameras and thus not perfectly aligned. Moreover, camera metadata such as white balance gains and color correction matrix are not provided, which makes the challenge more difficult. In this paper, we explore an effective network structure and a l…
A novel approach towards depth map super-resolution using multi-view uncalibrated photometric stereo is presented. Practically, an LED light source is attached to a commodity RGB-D sensor and is used to capture objects from multiple viewpoints with unknown motion. This non-static camera-to-object setup is described with a nonconvex variational approach such that no calibration on lighting or camera motion is required due to the formulation of an end-to-end joint optimization problem. Solving the proposed variational model results in high resolution depth, reflectance and camera pose estimates,…
We propose the first practical learned lossless image compression system, L3C, and show that it outperforms the popular engineered codecs, PNG, WebP and JPEG 2000. At the core of our method is a fully parallelizable hierarchical probabilistic model for adaptive entropy coding which is optimized end-to-end for the compression task. In contrast to recent autoregressive discrete probabilistic models such as PixelCNN, our method i) models the image distribution jointly with learned auxiliary representations instead of exclusively modeling the image distribution in RGB space, and ii) only requires …

Signal reconstruction from a sample using an orthogonal projector onto a guiding subspace is theoretically well justified, but may be difficult to practically implement. We propose more general guiding operators, which increase signal components in the guiding subspace relative to those in a complementary subspace, e.g., iterative low-pass edge-preserving filters for super-resolution of images. Two examples of super-resolution illustrate our technology: a no-flash RGB photo guided using a high resolution flash RGB photo, and a depth image guided using a high resolution RGB photo.

Noise modeling and reduction are fundamental tasks in low-level computer vision. They are particularly important for smartphone cameras relying on small sensors that exhibit visually noticeable noise. There has recently been renewed interest in using data-driven approaches to improve camera noise models via neural networks. These data-driven approaches target noise present in the raw-sensor image before it has been processed by the camera's image signal processor (ISP). Modeling noise in the RAW-rgb domain is useful for improving and testing the in-camera denoising algorithm; however, there ar…
In this paper, we propose a novel method for separately estimating spectral distributions from images captured by a typical RGB camera. The proposed method allows us to separately estimate a spectral distribution of illumination, reflectance, or camera sensitivity, while recent hyperspectral cameras are limited to capturing a joint spectral distribution from a scene. In addition, the use of Bayesian inference makes it possible to take into account prior information of both spectral distributions and image noise as probability distributions. As a result, the proposed method can estimate spectra…
This paper reviews the second challenge on spectral reconstruction from RGB images, i.e., the recovery of whole-scene hyperspectral (HS) information from a 3-channel RGB image. As in the previous challenge, two tracks were provided: (i) a "Clean" track where HS images are estimated from noise-free RGBs, the RGB images are themselves calculated numerically using the ground-truth HS images and supplied spectral sensitivity functions (ii) a "Real World" track, simulating capture by an uncalibrated and unknown camera, where the HS images are recovered from noisy JPEG-compressed RGB images. A new, …
Depth images captured by off-the-shelf RGB-D cameras suffer from much stronger noise than color images. In this paper, we propose a method to denoise the depth images in RGB-D images by color-guided graph filtering. Our iterative method contains two components: color-guided similarity graph construction, and graph filtering on the depth signal. Implemented in graph vertex domain, filtering is accelerated as computation only occurs among neighboring vertices. Experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-art depth image denoising methods significantly both on quality and effici…
Videos captured under low light conditions suffer from severe noise. A variety of efforts have been devoted to image/video noise suppression and made large progress. However, in extremely dark scenarios, extensive photon starvation would hamper precise noise modeling. Instead, developing an imaging system collecting more photons is a more effective way for high-quality video capture under low illuminations. In this paper, we propose to build a dual-sensor camera to additionally collect the photons in NIR wavelength, and make use of the correlation between RGB and near-infrared (NIR) spectrum t…
