We study private classical communication over quantum multiple-access channels. For an arbitrary number of transmitters, we derive a regularized expression of the capacity region. In the case of degradable channels, we establish a single-letter expression for the best achievable sum-rate and prove that this quantity also corresponds to the best achievable sum-rate for quantum communication over degradable quantum multiple-access channels. In our achievability result, we decouple the reliability and privacy constraints, which are handled via source coding with quantum side information and universal hashing, respectively. Hence, we also establish that the multi-user coding problem under consideration can be handled solely via point-to-point coding techniques. As a by-product of independent interest, we derive a distributed leftover hash lemma against quantum side information that ensures privacy in our achievability result.

This paper establishes several converse bounds on the private transmission capabilities of a quantum channel. The main conceptual development builds firmly on the notion of a private state, which is a powerful, uniquely quantum method for simplifying the tripartite picture of privacy involving local operations and public classical communication to a bipartite picture of quantum privacy involving local operations and classical communication. This approach has previously led to some of the strongest upper bounds on secret key rates, including the squashed entanglement and the relative entropy of…
The classical-input quantum-output (cq) wiretap channel is a communication model involving a classical sender $X$, a legitimate quantum receiver $B$, and a quantum eavesdropper $E$. The goal of a private communication protocol that uses such a channel is for the sender $X$ to transmit a message in such a way that the legitimate receiver $B$ can decode it reliably, while the eavesdropper $E$ learns essentially nothing about which message was transmitted. The $\varepsilon $-one-shot private capacity of a cq wiretap channel is equal to the maximum number of bits that can be transmitted over the c…
Collins and Popescu realized a powerful analogy between several resources in classical and quantum information theory. The Collins-Popescu analogy states that public classical communication, private classical communication, and secret key interact with one another somewhat similarly to the way that classical communication, quantum communication, and entanglement interact. This paper discusses the information-theoretic treatment of this analogy for the case of noisy quantum channels. We determine a capacity region for a quantum channel interacting with the noiseless resources of public classica…
We construct a new secret-key assisted polar coding scheme for private classical communication over a quantum or classical wiretap channel. The security of our scheme rests on an entropic uncertainty relation, in addition to the channel polarization effect. Our scheme achieves the symmetric private information rate by synthesizing "amplitude" and "phase" channels from an arbitrary quantum wiretap channel. We find that the secret-key consumption rate of the scheme vanishes for an arbitrary degradable quantum wiretap channel. Furthermore, we provide an additional sufficient condition for when th…
The demand private coded caching problem in a multi-access network with $K$ users and $K$ caches, where each user has access to $L$ neighbouring caches in a cyclic wrap-around manner, is studied. The additional constraint imposed is that one user should not get any information regarding the demands of the remaining users. A lifting construction of demand private multi-access coded caching scheme from conventional, non-private multi-access scheme is introduced. The demand-privacy for a user is ensured by placing some additional \textit{keys} in a set of caches called the \textit{private set} of…
The relay encoder is an unreliable probabilistic device which is aimed at helping the communication between the sender and the receiver. In this work we show that in the quantum setting the probabilistic behavior can be completely eliminated. We also show how to combine quantum polar encoding with superactivation-assistance in order to achieve reliable and capacity-achieving private communication over noisy quantum relay channels.
We define a new phenomenon for communication over noisy quantum channels. The investigated solution is called polaractivation and based on quantum polar encoding. Polaractivation is a natural consequence of the channel polarization effect in quantum systems and makes possible to open the hidden capacity regions of a noisy quantum channel by using the idea of rate increment. While in case of a classical channel only the rate of classical communication can be increased, in case of a quantum channel the channel polarization and the rate improvement can be exploited to open unreachable capacity re…
We study quantum secure direct communication by using a general preshared quantum state and a generalization of dense coding. In this scenario, Alice is allowed to apply a unitary on the preshared state to encode her message, and the set of allowed unitaries forms a group. To decode the message, Bob is allowed to apply a measurement across his own system and the system he receives. In the worst scenario, we guarantee that Eve obtains no information for the message even when Eve access the joint system between the system that she intercepts and her original system of the preshared state. For a …
The quantum capacity of a quantum channel is always smaller than the capacity of the channel for private communication. However, both quantities are given by the infinite regularization of respectively the coherent and the private information. Here, we construct a family of channels for which the private and coherent information can remain strictly superadditive for unbounded number of uses. We prove this by showing that the coherent information is strictly larger than the private information of a smaller number of uses of the channel. This implies that even though the quantum capacity is uppe…
Harnessing a block-sparse prior to recover signals through underdetermined linear measurements has been extensively shown to allow exact recovery in conditions where classical compressed sensing would provably fail. We exploit this result to propose a novel private communication framework where the secrecy is achieved by transmitting instances of an unidentifiable compressed sensing problem over a public channel. The legitimate receiver can attempt to overcome this ill-posedness by leveraging secret knowledge of a block structure that was used to encode the transmitter's message. We study the …
We analyze the practical performance of quantum polar codes, by computing rigorous bounds on block error probability and by numerically simulating them. We evaluate our bounds for quantum erasure channels with coding block lengths between 2^10 and 2^20, and we report the results of simulations for quantum erasure channels, quantum depolarizing channels, and "BB84" channels with coding block lengths up to N = 1024. For quantum erasure channels, we observe that high quantum data rates can be achieved for block error rates less than 10^(-4) and that somewhat lower quantum data rates can be achiev…
Sending private messages over communication environments under surveillance is an important challenge in communication security and has attracted attentions of cryptographers through time. We believe that resources other than cryptographic keys can be used for communication privacy. We consider private message transmission (PMT) in an abstract multipath communication model between two communicants, Alice and Bob, in the presence of an eavesdropper, Eve. Alice and Bob have pre-shared keys and Eve is computationally unbounded. There are a total of $n$ paths and the three parties can have simulta…
This paper investigates secrecy rate optimization for a multicasting network, in which a transmitter broadcasts the same information to multiple legitimate users in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. In order to improve the achievable secrecy rates, private jammers are employed to generate interference to confuse the eavesdroppers. These private jammers charge the legitimate transmitter for their jamming services based on the amount of interference received at the eavesdroppers. Therefore, this secrecy rate maximization problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game, in which the private jam…
We provide the first inner bounds for sending private classical information over a quantum multiple access channel. We do so by using three powerful information theoretic techniques: rate splitting, quantum simultaneous decoding for multiple access channels, and a novel smoothed distributed covering lemma for classical quantum channels. Our inner bounds are given in the one shot setting and accordingly the three techniques used are all very recent ones specifically designed to work in this setting. The last technique is new to this work and is our main technical advancement. For the asymptotic…
We construct new polar coding schemes for the transmission of quantum or private classical information over arbitrary quantum channels. In the former case, our coding scheme achieves the symmetric coherent information and in the latter the symmetric private information. Both schemes are built from a polar coding construction capable of transmitting classical information over a quantum channel [Wilde and Guha, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, in press]. Appropriately merging two such classical-quantum schemes, one for transmitting "amplitude" information and the other for transmitting "…
We consider the problems of distribution estimation and heavy hitter (frequency) estimation under privacy and communication constraints. While these constraints have been studied separately, optimal schemes for one are sub-optimal for the other. We propose a sample-optimal $\varepsilon$-locally differentially private (LDP) scheme for distribution estimation, where each user communicates only one bit, and requires no public randomness. We show that Hadamard Response, a recently proposed scheme for $\varepsilon$-LDP distribution estimation is also utility-optimal for heavy hitter estimation. Fin…
We consider the problem of multi-access cache-aided multi-user Private Information Retrieval (MuPIR). In this problem, several files are replicated across multiple servers. There are $K$ users and $C$ cache nodes. Each user can access $L$ cache nodes, and every cache node can be accessed by several users. Each user wants to retrieve one file from the servers, but the users do not want the servers to know their demands. Before the users decide their respective demands, servers will fill the cache nodes from the content of the files. Users will then request their desired files from the servers. …
In this paper, we consider the problem of secret key generation with one-way communication through both a rate-limited public channel and a rate-limited secure channels where the public channel is from Alice to Bob and Eve and the secure channel is from Alice to Bob. In this model, we do not pose any constraints on the sources, i.e. Bob is not degraded to or less noisy than Eve. We obtain the optimal secret key rate in this problem, both for the discrete memoryless sources and vector Gaussian sources. The vector Gaussian characterization is derived by suitably applying the enhancement argument…
We study an information theoretic privacy mechanism design problem for two scenarios where the private data is either observable or hidden. In each scenario, we first consider bounded mutual information as privacy leakage criterion, then we use two different per-letter privacy constraints. In the first scenario, an agent observes useful data $Y$ that is correlated with private data $X$, and wishes to disclose the useful information to a user. A privacy mechanism is designed to generate disclosed data $U$ which maximizes the revealed information about $Y$ while satisfying a bounded privacy leak…
Tensor operations, such as matrix multiplication, are central to large-scale machine learning applications. For user-driven tasks these operations can be carried out on a distributed computing platform with a master server at the user side and multiple workers in the cloud operating in parallel. For distributed platforms, it has been recently shown that coding over the input data matrices can reduce the computational delay, yielding a trade-off between recovery threshold and communication load. In this paper we impose an additional security constraint on the data matrices and assume that worke…
Large matrix multiplications are central to large-scale machine learning applications. These operations are often carried out on a distributed computing platform with a master server and multiple workers in the cloud operating in parallel. For such distributed platforms, it has been recently shown that coding over the input data matrices can reduce the computational delay, yielding a trade-off between recovery threshold, i.e., the number of workers required to recover the matrix product, and communication load, i.e., the total amount of data to be downloaded from the workers. In this paper, in…
We study the equivalence between non-perfect secret sharing (NSS) and symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR) with arbitrary response and collusion patterns. NSS and SPIR are defined with an access structure, which corresponds to the authorized/forbidden sets for NSS and the response/collusion patterns for SPIR. We prove the equivalence between NSS and SPIR in the following two senses. 1) Given any SPIR protocol with an access structure, an NSS protocol is constructed with the same access structure and the same rate. 2) Given any linear NSS protocol with an access structure, a linear SP…
We investigate the problem of private read update write (PRUW) in relation to private federated submodel learning (FSL), where a machine learning model is divided into multiple submodels based on the different types of data used to train the model. In PRUW, each user downloads the required submodel without revealing its index in the reading phase, and uploads the updates of the submodel without revealing the submodel index or the values of the updates in the writing phase. In this work, we first provide a basic communication efficient PRUW scheme, and study further means of reducing the commun…
In attribute-based access control, users with certain verified attributes will gain access to some particular data. Concerning with privacy of the users' attributes, we study the problem of distributed attribute-based private access control (DAPAC) with multiple authorities, where each authority will learn and verify only one of the attributes. To investigate its fundamental limits, we introduce an information theoretic DAPAC framework, with $N \in \mathbb{N}$, $N\geq 2$, replicated non-colluding servers (authorities) and some users. Each user has an attribute vector $\mathbf{v^*}=(v_1^*, ...,…

We consider the total (upload plus download) communication cost of two-database symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR) through its relationship to conditional disclosure of secrets (CDS). In SPIR, a user wishes to retrieve a message out of $K$ messages from $N$ non-colluding and replicated databases without learning anything beyond the retrieved message, while no individual database learns the retrieved message index. In CDS, two parties each holding an individual input and sharing a common secret wish to disclose this secret to an external party in an efficient manner if and only if t…
A set of terminals observe correlated data and seek to compute functions of the data using interactive public communication. At the same time, it is required that the value of a private function of the data remains concealed from an eavesdropper observing this communication. In general, the private function and the functions computed by the nodes can be all different. We show that a class of functions are securely computable if and only if the conditional entropy of data given the value of private function is greater than the least rate of interactive communication required for a related multi…
In federated learning (FL), a machine learning (ML) model is collectively trained by a large number of users, using their private data in their local devices. With top $r$ sparsification in FL, the users only upload the most significant $r$ fraction of updates, and the servers only send the most significant $r'$ fraction of parameters to the users in order to reduce the communication cost. However, the values and the indices of the sparse updates leak information about the users' private data. In this work, we consider an FL setting where $N$ non-colluding databases store the model to be train…

The problem of secure source coding with multiple terminals is extended by considering a remote source whose noisy measurements are the correlated random variables used for secure source reconstruction. The main additions to the problem include 1) all terminals noncausally observe a noisy measurement of the remote source; 2) a private key is available to all legitimate terminals; 3) the public communication link between the encoder and decoder is rate-limited; and 4) the secrecy leakage to the eavesdropper is measured with respect to the encoder input, whereas the privacy leakage is measured w…
We propose a new computationally efficient privacy-preserving identification framework based on layered sparse coding. The key idea of the proposed framework is a sparsifying transform learning with ambiguization, which consists of a trained linear map, a component-wise nonlinearity and a privacy amplification. We introduce a practical identification framework, which consists of two phases: public and private identification. The public untrusted server provides the fast search service based on the sparse privacy protected codebook stored at its side. The private trusted server or the local cli…
