The mass of the axion-like particles could be constrained by the observed black hole spin distribution. In this work, we update the previous calculations using the recently improved superradiance formula, which is much more accurate. The effect of the merger time scale is also carefully investigated with Bayesian analysis. After integration of the merger time $τ_\mathrm{M}$, we find two favoured mass ranges $7.94\times10^{-13}~\text{eV}\leqμ\leq8.71\times10^{-13}~\text{eV}$ and $1.44\times10^{-12}~\text{eV}\leqμ\leq1.74\times10^{-12}~\text{eV}$ . These two favored ranges do not depend on the prior distribution of the $τ_\mathrm{M}$. We also find the strength of evidence for the range $-12.80\leq\log_{10}(μ/\text{eV})\leq-12.34$, which is excluded in the analysis with fixed $τ_\text{M}$, could increase by several orders of magnitude with $τ_\mathrm{M}$ averaged.
Light axions ($m_a \lesssim 10^{-10}$ eV) can form dense clouds around rapidly rotating astrophysical black holes via a mechanism known as rotational superradiance. The coupling between axions and photons induces a parametric resonance, arising from the stimulated decay of the axion cloud, which can rapidly convert regions of large axion number densities into an enormous flux of low-energy photons. In this work we consider the phenomenological implications of a superradiant axion cloud undergoing resonant decay. We show that the low energy photons produced from such events will be absorbed ove…
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion bound states in neutron star magnetospheres. The instability arises from the mixing of axion and photon modes in the magnetic field of the neutron star which extract energy from the rotating magnetosphere. Unlike for black holes, where the dissipation required for superradiance is provided by an absorbative horizon, the non-hermitian dynamics in this paper come from the resistivity in the stellar magnet…
An inhomogeneous pseudo-scalar field configuration behaves like an optically active medium. Consequently, if a light ray passes through an axion cloud surrounding a Kerr black hole, it may experience a polarization-dependent bending. We explore the size and relevance of such effect considering both the QCD axion and a generic axion-like particle.
Ultralight bosons and axion-like particles appear naturally in different scenarios and could solve some long-standing puzzles. Their detection is challenging, and all direct methods hinge on unknown couplings to the Standard Model of particle physics. However, the universal coupling to gravity provides model-independent signatures for these fields. We explore here the superradiant instability of spinning black holes triggered in the presence of such fields. The instability taps angular momentum from and limits the maximum spin of astrophysical black holes. We compute, for the first time, the s…
Under some conditions, light boson fields grow exponentially around a rotating black hole, called the superradiance instability. We discuss effects of nonlinear interactions of the boson on the instability. In particular, we focus on the effect of the particle production and show that the growth of the boson cloud may be saturated much before the black hole spin is extracted by the boson cloud, while the nonlinear interactions also induce the boson emission. For application, we revisit the superradiant instability of the standard model photon, axion and hidden photon.

Black-hole superradiance has been used to place very strong bounds on a variety of models of ultralight bosons such as axions, new light scalars, and dark photons. It is common lore to believe that superradiance bounds are broadly model independent and therefore pretty robust. In this work we show however that superradiance bounds on dark photons can be challenged by simple, compelling extensions of the minimal model. In particular, if the dark photon populates a larger dark sector and couples to dark fermions playing the role of dark matter, then superradiance bounds can easily be circumvente…
Black hole superradiance is a powerful probe of light, weakly-coupled hidden sector particles. Many candidate particles, such as axions, generically have self-interactions that can influence the evolution of the superradiant instability. As pointed out in arXiv:1604.06422 in the context of a toy model, much of the existing literature on spin-0 superradiance does not take into account the most important self-interaction-induced processes. These processes lead to energy exchange between quasi-bound levels and particle emission to infinity; for large self-couplings, superradiant growth is saturat…

The approximate solution of the Klein-Gordon equation for a real scalar field of mass $μ$ in the geometry of a Kerr black hole obtained by Detweiler \cite{Detweiler:1980uk} is widely used in the analysis of the stability of black holes as well as the search of axion-like particles. In this work, we confirm a missing factor $1/2$ in this solution, which was first identified in Ref.~\cite{Pani:2012bp}. The corrected result has strange features that put questions on the power-counting strategy. We solve this problem by adding the next-to-leading order (NLO) contribution. Compared to the numerical…
The superradiant instability of black hole space-times has been used to place limits on ultra-light bosonic particles. We show that these limits are model dependent. While the initial growth of the mode is gravitational and thus model independent, the ability to place a limit on new particles requires the mode to grow unhindered to a large number density. Non-linear interactions between the particle and other light degrees of freedom that are mediated through higher dimension operators can damp this growth, eliminating the limit. However, these non-linearities may also destroy a cosmic abundan…
Advanced LIGO may be the first experiment to detect gravitational waves. Through superradiance of stellar black holes, it may also be the first experiment to discover the QCD axion with decay constant above the GUT scale. When an axion's Compton wavelength is comparable to the size of a black hole, the axion binds to the black hole, forming a "gravitational atom." Through the superradiance process, the number of axions occupying the bound levels grows exponentially, extracting energy and angular momentum from the black hole. Axions transitioning between levels of the gravitational atom and axi…

With high spatial resolution, polarimetric imaging of a supermassive black hole, like M87$^\star$ or Sgr A$^\star$, by the Event Horizon Telescope can be used to probe the existence of ultralight bosonic particles, such as axions. Such particles can accumulate around a rotating black hole through the superradiance mechanism, forming an axion cloud. When linearly polarized photons are emitted from an accretion disk near the horizon, their position angles oscillate due to the birefringent effect when traveling through the axion background. In particular, the observations of supermassive black ho…

Axion-like particles lead to a plethora of new phenomena relating to compact astrophysical objects including stellar and black hole superradiance, axion stars and axion clusters. In this work, we investigate a new scenario in which macroscopic axion configurations are sourced by the electromagnetic fields of pulsars via the axion-photon coupling. We solve the inhomogeneous axion field equation with an explicit source term given by the electromagnetic fields of the pulsar in a rotating magnetic dipole approximation. We find that the axion profile either forms a localised boundstate or radiates …
An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it …
Astrophysical observations of spinning BHs, which span $ 5M_\odot\lesssim M_{\rm BH}\lesssim 5\times 10^8 M_\odot$, can be used to exclude the existence of certain massive bosons via the superradiance phenomenon. In this work, we explore for the first time how these measurements can be used to constrain properties of statistical distributions for the masses of multiple bosonic fields. Quite generally, our methodology excludes $N_{\rm ax}\gtrsim 30$ scalar fields with a range of mass distribution widths and central values spanning many orders of magnitude. We demonstrate this for the specific e…
In the next few years Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) may see gravitational waves (GWs) from thousands of black hole (BH) mergers. This marks the beginning of a new precision tool for physics. Here we show how to search for new physics beyond the standard model using this tool, in particular the QCD axion in the mass range ma ~ 10^-14 to 10^-10 eV. Axions (or any bosons) in this mass range cause rapidly rotating BHs to shed their spin into a large cloud of axions in atomic Bohr orbits around the BH, through the effect of superradiance (SR). This results in a gap in the mass vs. spin distribution of BHs …
The physics of black holes can suggest new ways to test the existence of axions. Much work has been done so far to analyse the phenomenon of superradiance associated with axions in the ergoregion surrounding rotating black holes. In this work, we instead investigate how Chern-Simons axion couplings of the form $ϕ\,F\,\tilde F$ and $ϕ\,R\,\tilde R$, well motivated by particle physics and string theory, can induce long range profiles for light axion fields around charged black holes, with or without spin. We extend known solutions describing axion hairs around spherically symmetric, asymptotical…
In the presence of massive bosonic degrees of freedom, rotational superradiance can trigger an instability that spins down black holes. This leads to peculiar gravitational-wave signatures and distribution in the spin-mass plane, which in turn can impose stringent constraints on ultralight fields. Here, we demonstrate that there is an analogous spindown effect for conducting stars. We show that rotating stars amplify low frequency electromagnetic waves, and that this effect is largest when the time scale for conduction within the star is of the order of a light crossing time. This has interest…
We investigate whether the recently observed 2.6 $M_\odot$ compact object in the gravitational-wave event GW190814 can be a bosonic dark matter admixed compact star. By considering the three constraints in mass, radius and stability of such an object, we find that if the dark matter is made of QCD axions, their particle mass $m$ is constrained to a range that has already been ruled out by the independent constraint imposed by the stellar-mass black hole superradiance process. The 2.6 $M_\odot$ object can still be a neutron star admixed with at least 2.0 $M_\odot$ of dark matter made of axion-l…
Black hole superradiance is a powerful tool in the search for ultra-light bosons. Constraints on the existence of such particles have been derived from the observation of highly spinning black holes, absence of continuous gravitational-wave signals, and of the associated stochastic background. However, these constraints are only strictly speaking valid in the limit where the boson's interactions can be neglected. In this work we investigate the extent to which the superradiant growth of an ultra-light dark photon can be quenched via scattering processes with ambient electrons. For dark photon …
Exploring the String Axiverse with Precision Black Hole Physics
We study the impact of a binary companion on black hole superradiance at orbital frequencies away from the gravitational-collider-physics (GCP) resonance bands. A superradiant state can couple to a strongly absorptive state via the tidal perturbation of the companion, thereby acquiring a suppressed superradiance rate. Below a critical binary separation, this superradiance rate becomes negative, and the boson cloud gets absorbed by the black hole. This critical binary separation leads to tight constraints on GCP. Especially, a companion with mass ratio $q>10^{-3}$ invalidates all GCP fine struc…

We extensively study the different aspects of the black hole associated with a generalized Kerr-like spacetime metric endowed with the corrections licked with Lorentz violation and non-commutativity effect jointly. We investigate the superradiance effect, deviation of shape, and size of the ergosphere, energy emission rate, and black hole shadow in this generalized situation and study their variation taking different admissible values of Lorentz violati…
If the dark matter is made of ultra-light axions, stable solitonic cores form at the centers of virialized halos. In some range for the mass $m$ of the axion particle, these cores are sufficiently compact and can mimic supermassive black holes (SMBH) residing at galactic nuclei. We use the solitonic core--halo mass relation, validated in numerical simulations, to constrain a new range of allowed axion mass from measurements of the SMBH mass in (pseudo)bulge and bulgeless galaxies. These limits are based on observations of galactic nuclei on scales smaller than 10 pc. Our analysis suggests that…
Rapidly rotating black holes are known to develop instabilities in the presence of a sufficiently light boson, a process which becomes efficient when the boson's Compton wavelength is roughly the size of the black hole. This phenomenon, known as black hole superradiance, generates an exponentially growing boson cloud at the expense of the rotational energy of the black hole. For astrophysical black holes with $M \sim \mathcal{O}(10) \, M_\odot$, the superradiant condition is achieved for bosons with $m_b \sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-11} ) \, {\rm eV}$; intriguingly, photons traversing the intergalact…
Most matter in the Universe is invisible and unknown, which is called dark matter. A candidate of dark matter is axion, which is an ultra-light particle motivated as a solution for the CP problem. Axions form clouds in a galactic halo, amplify, and delay a part of gravitational waves propagating in the clouds. The Milky Way is surrounded by the dark matter halo composed of a number of axion patches. Thus, the characteristic secondary gravitational waves are always expected right after the reported gravitational-wave signals from compact binary mergers. In this paper, we derive a realistic ampl…
Light axion fields, if they exist, can be sourced by neutron stars due to their coupling to nuclear matter, and play a role in binary neutron star mergers. We report on a search for such axions by analysing the gravitational waves from the binary neutron star inspiral GW170817. We find no evidence of axions in the sampled parameter space. The null result allows us to impose constraints on axions with masses below $10^{-11} {\rm eV}$ by excluding the ones with decay constants ranging from $1.6\times10^{16} {\rm GeV}$ to $10^{18} {\rm GeV}$ at $3σ$ confidence level. Our analysis provides the fir…
In this thesis we study the phenomenon of superradiance and its implications to the stability of black-holes (BH) and perfect-fluid stars. Superradiance is a radiation enhancement process that involves rotating dissipative systems. In BH spacetimes, superradiance is due to dissipation at the event horizon, with interesting associated phenomena, namely floating orbits and BH-bombs. BH superradiance is a very interdisciplinary topic, and its study allows us to obtain important results in the area of particle physics. The scattering of a scalar field by a rotating BH leads to the formation of qua…
Ultralight axion like particles (ALPs) of mass $m_a\in (10^{-21}\rm{eV}-10^{-22}\rm{eV})$ with axion decay constant $f_a\sim 10^{17}\rm{GeV}$ can be candidates for fuzzy dark matter (FDM). If celestial bodies like Earth and Sun are immersed in a low mass axionic FDM potential and if the ALPs have coupling with nucleons then the coherent oscillation of the axionic field results a long range axion hair outside of the celestial bodies. The range of the axion mediated Yukawa type fifth force is determined by the distance between the Earth and the Sun which fixes the upper bound of the mass of axio…
In this paper, we provide a simple and modern discussion of rotational superradiance based on quantum field theory. We work with an effective theory valid at scales much larger than the size of the spinning object responsible for superradiance. Within this framework, the probability of absorption by an object at rest completely determines the superradiant amplification rate when that same object is spinning. We first discuss in detail superradiant scattering of spin 0 particles with orbital angular momentum $\ell=1$, and then extend our analysis to higher values of orbital angular momentum and…
The process of superradiance can extract angular momentum and energy from astrophysical black holes (BHs) to populate gravitationally-bound states with an exponentially large number of light bosons. We analytically calculate superradiant growth rates for vectors around rotating BHs in the regime where the vector Compton wavelength is much larger than the BH size. Spin-1 bound states have superradiance times as short as a second around stellar BHs, growing up to a thou- sand times faster than their spin-0 counterparts. The fast rates allow us to use measurements of rapidly spinning BHs in X-ray…
A Kerr-Sen-like black hole solution results from Einstein-bumblebee gravity. It contains a Lorentz violating (LV) parameter that enters when the bumblebee field receives vacuum expectation value through a spontaneously breaking of the symmetry of the classical action. The geometrical structure concerning the singularity of this spacetime is studied with reference to the parameters involved in the Kerr-Sen-like metric. We introduce this Einstein-bumblebee modified gravity to probe the role of spontaneous Lorentz violation on the superradiance scattering phenomena and the instability associated …
