We report the discovery of two Black Widow millisecond pulsars in the globular cluster M28 with the MeerKAT telescope. PSR J1824$-$2452M (M28M) is a 4.78-ms pulsar in a $5.82\,$hour orbit and PSR J1824$-$2452N (M28N) is a 3.35-ms pulsar in a $4.76\,$hour orbit. Both pulsars have dispersion measures near $119.30\,$pc$\,$cm$^{-3}$ and have low mass companion stars ($\sim$$0.01-0.03\,$M$_\odot$), which do not cause strong radio eclipses or orbital variations. Including these systems, there are now five known black widow pulsars in M28. The pulsar searches were conducted as a part of an initial phase of MeerKAT's globular cluster census (within the TRAPUM Large Survey Project). These faint discoveries demonstrate the advantages of MeerKAT's survey sensitivity over previous searches and we expect to find additional pulsars in continued searches of this cluster.
We present the discovery of a new optical/X-ray source likely associated with the Fermi $γ$-ray source 4FGL J1408.6-2917. Its high-amplitude periodic optical variability, large spectroscopic radial velocity semi-amplitude, evidence for optical emission lines and flaring, and X-ray properties together imply the source is probably a new black widow millisecond pulsar binary. We study the timing stability of three black widow pulsars, both in terms of their long-term spin evolution and their shorter-term orbital stability. The erratic timing behaviour and radio eclipses of the first two black widow pulsar systems discovered (PSRs B1957+20 and J2051$-$0827) was assumed to be representative for this class of pulsars. The 559 Hz black-widow pulsar PSR J1555-2908, originally discovered in radio, is also a bright gamma-ray pulsar. Timing its pulsations using 12 yr of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data reveals long-term variations in its spin frequency that are much larger than is observed from other millisecond pulsars. We report on Chandra observations of the black widow pulsar, PSR B1957+20. Evidence for a binary-phase dependence of the X-ray emission from the pulsar is found with a deep observation. The binary-phase resolved spectral analysis reveals non-thermal X-ray emission of PSR B1957+20, confirming the results of previous studies. This suggests that the X-rays are mostly due to intra-binary shock emission which is strongest when the pulsar wind interacts with the ablated material from the companion star. We report on high-energy properties of the black widow pulsar PSR J2241$-$5236 in the X-ray and the Fermi-LAT (GeV gamma-ray) bands. In the LAT band, the phase-averaged gamma-ray light curve shows orbital modulation below $\sim$1 GeV with a chance probability ($p$) monotonically decreasing with time to $p\sim 10^{-5}$. The peak of the light curve is near the superior conjunction of the pulsar (binary phase $ϕ_{\rm B}\approx 0.25$). Superposed on the 2.44 hr orbital modulation are day-to-day variations and frequent flaring as seen in several redback and black widow millisecond pulsars (MSPs). The wealth of detections of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in $γ$-rays by {\em Fermi} has spurred searches for these objects among the several unidentified $γ$-ray sources. The features of pulsed $γ$-ray emission from classical and millisecond pulsars indicate that the high energy radiation processes in their inner magnetospheres occur in a similar way. We have found an optical/X-ray counterpart candidate for the bright, but presently unidentified, Fermi source 2FGL J1311.7-3429. This counterpart undergoes large amplitude quasi-sinusoidal optical modulation with a 1.56h (5626s) period. The modulated flux is blue at peak, with T_eff ~14,000K, and redder at minimum. Superimposed on this variation are dramatic optical flares. Archival X-ray data suggest modest binary modulation, but no eclipse. We report on a discovery of a promising candidate as a black widow millisecond pulsar binary, 4FGL J0336.0+7502, which shows many pulsar-like properties in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. Within the 95% error region of the LAT source, we identified an optical counterpart with a clear periodicity at P(orb) = 3.718178(9) hours using the Bohyunsan 1.8-m Telescope, Lulin One-meter Telescope, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and Gemini-North. Binary systems composed of a recycled millisecond pulsar and a stellar companion in close orbit could be excellent sites to diagnose pulsar winds. In such systems, the pulsar outflow irradiates and heats up the companion atmosphere, which can lead to the observation of strong day/night modulations in temperature. We demonstrate with particle shower simulations that the particle energy of the wind affects the heating depth in the atmosphere: the wind heat can be deposited above or below the photosphere, leading to different signatures in the observed spectra. We present the results of detailed X-ray analysis of two black-widow pulsars (BWPs), J1446-4701 and J1311-3430. PSR J1446-4701 is a BWP with orbital parameters near the median values of the sample of known BWPs. Its X-ray emission detected by $XMM-Newton$ is well characterized by a soft power-law (PL) spectrum (photon index $Γ\approx 3$), and it shows no significant orbital modulations. In view of a lack of radio eclipses and an optical non-detection, the system most likely has a low orbital inclination. We report on evidence for orbital phase-dependence of the gamma-ray emission from PSR B1957+20 black widow system by using the data of the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We divide an orbital cycle into two regions: a region containing the inferior conjunction, and the other region containing rest of the orbital cycle. We show that the observed spectra for the different orbital regions are fitted by different functional forms. The spectrum of the orbital region containing inferior conjunction can be described by a power-law with an exponential cutoff (PLE) model, which gives the best-fit model for…
We report the optical identification of the companion to the {\it Fermi} black widow millisecond pulsar PSR J1544+4937. We find a highly variable source on Keck LRIS images at the nominal pulsar position, with 2 magnitude variations over orbital period in the B, g, R, and I bands. The nearly achromatic light curves are difficult to explain with a simply irradiated hemisphere model, and suggest that the optical emission is dominated by a nearly isothermal hot patch on the surface of the companion facing the pulsar. It has been suggested that the pulsar's rotationally powered $γ$-ray luminosity gradually evaporates the companion, eventually leaving behind an isolated millisecond pulsar. We report the discovery of pulsed γ-ray emission and X-ray emission from the black widow millisecond pulsar PSR J2051-0827 by using the data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer array (ACIS-S) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Using 3 years of LAT data, PSR J2051-0827 is clearly detected in γ-ray with a signicance of \sim 8σ in the 0.2 - 20 GeV band. We collect new and archival optical observations of nine "black-widow" millisecond pulsar binaries. New measurements include direct imaging with the Keck, Gemini-S, MDM, and LCO 2~m telescopes. This is supplemented by synthesized colors from Keck long-slit spectra. Four black-widow optical companions are presented here for the first time. Together these data provide multicolor photometry covering a large fraction of the orbital phase. Recently, several eclipsing millisecond pulsars have been shown to experience strong and apparent weak lensing from the outflow of their ionized companions. Lensing can be a powerful probe of the ionized plasma, with the strongest lenses potentially resolving emission regions of pulsars. We describe the first X-ray observations of five short orbital period ($P_B < 1$ day), $γ$-ray emitting, binary millisecond pulsars. Four of these, PSRs J0023+0923, J1124$-$3653, J1810+1744, and J2256$-$1024 are `black-widow' pulsars, with degenerate companions of mass $\ll0.1 M_{\odot}$, three of which exhibit radio eclipses. We have conducted a systematic survey for the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Currently, there are 47 MSPs with confirmed X-ray detections. We have also placed the upper limits for the X-ray emission from the other 36 MSPs by using the archival data. We have normalized their X-ray luminosities $L_{x}$ and their effective photon indices $Γ$ into a homogeneous data set, which enable us to carry out a detailed statistical analysis. The GMRT High-Resolution Southern Sky Survey for pulsars and transients -- VII: Timing of Spider MSP J1242-4712, A Bridge Between Redback and Black Widow Pulsars
In regions with strongly varying electron density, radio emission can be magnified significantly by plasma lensing. In the presence of magnetic fields, magnification in time and frequency will be different for two circular polarizations. We show how these effects can be used to measure or constrain the magnetic field parallel to the line of sight, $B_\parallel$, as well as its spatial structure, $σ_{B_\parallel}$, in the lensing region. We report the discovery of the first radio pulsar associated with NGC 6712, an eclipsing black widow (BW) pulsar, J1853$-$0842A, found by high-sensitivity searches using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. This 2.15 ms pulsar is in a 3.56 hr compact circular orbit with a very low mass companion likely of mass 0.018 to 0.036 $M_{\rm \odot}$ and exhibits eclipsing of the pulsar signal. We report the discovery of PSR J1555-2908, a 1.79 ms radio and gamma-ray pulsar in a 5.6 hr binary system with a minimum companion mass of 0.052 $M_\odot$. This fast and energetic ($\dot E = 3 \times 10^{35}$ erg/s) millisecond pulsar was first detected as a gamma-ray point source in Fermi LAT sky survey observations. We have observed and analysed the eclipses of the black widow pulsar J1810+1744 at low radio frequencies. Using LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations between 2011--2015 we have measured variations in flux density, dispersion measure and scattering around eclipses. High-time-resolution, simultaneous beamformed and interferometric imaging LOFAR observations show concurrent disappearance of pulsations and total flux from the source during the eclipses, with a $3σ$ upper limit of 36 mJy ($<10\%$ of the pulsar's averaged out-of-eclipse flux density). Evolution of non-accreting binary systems with "eclipsing" milisecond pulsars was described by Kluźniak, Czerny & Ray (1992) who predicted that systems like the one containing the Terzan 5 PSR 1744-24A will in the future become accreting low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), while PSR 1957+20 may evaporate its companion. Results from 11 years of radio timing for eclipsing black widow millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary, J1544+4937, is presented in this paper. We report a phase-connected timing model for this MSP, using observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at multiple frequencies and with Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Black widows are millisecond pulsars with low-mass companions, a few per cent the mass of the sun, on orbits of several hours. These companions are presumably the remnants of main sequence stars that lost their mass through a combination of Roche-lobe overflow and ablation by the host pulsar's high-energy radiation. While ablation itself is too weak to significantly reduce the mass of the companion star, the ablated wind couples to its magnetic field, removes orbital angular momentum, and thus maintains stable Roche-lobe overflow. There has recently been a large increase in the number of known eclipsing radio millisecond pulsars in the Galactic field, many of which are associated with Fermi gamma-ray sources. All are in tight binaries (P_b < 24hr) many of which are classical "black widows" with very low mass companions (M_c << 0.1 M_sol) but some are "redbacks" with probably non-degenerate low mass companions (M_c ~ 0.2 M_sol). I review the new discoveries, briefly discuss the distance uncertainties and the implications for high-energy emission.
We report on an unusually bright observation of PSR J2051$-$0827 recorded during a regular monitoring campaign of black-widow pulsar systems with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Through fortunate coincidence, a particularly bright scintillation maximum is simultaneous with the eclipse by the companion, enabling precise measurements of variations in the flux density, dispersion measure (DM), and scattering strength throughout the eclipse. We report our discovery of orbitally modulated $γ$-ray emission from the black widow system PSR J1311-3430. We analyze the \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope data during the offpulse phase interval of the pulsar, and find the orbital modulation signal at a $\sim$3$σ$ confidence level. Further spectral analysis shows no significant differences for the spectra obtained during the bright and faint orbital phase ranges. A simple sinusoid-like function can describe the modulation. We present a model for atmospheric wind circulation in binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) companions, showing how the optical light curve (LC) and radial velocities (RV) are sensitive to the wind flow, causing LC orbital phase shifts and asymmetries, as observed for several `spider' MSP. We report on the determination of the astrometric, spin and orbital parameters for PSR J1953+1846A, a "black widow" binary millisecond pulsar in the globular cluster M71. By using the accurate position and orbital parameters obtained from radio timing, we identified the optical companion in ACS/Hubble Space Telescope images. Eclipsing millisecond pulsars in close ($P_b < 1$~day) binary systems provide a different view of pulsar winds and shocks than do isolated pulsars. Since 2009, the numbers of these systems known in the Galactic field has increased enormously. We have been systematically studying many of these newly discovered systems at multiple wavelengths. Typically, the companion is nearly Roche-lobe filling and heated by the pulsar which drives mass loss from the companion. We present optical time-resolved multi-band photometry of the black widow binary millisecond pulsar J2052+1219 using direct-imaging observations with the 2.1m telescope of Observatorio Astronomico Nacional San Pedro Martir, Mexico (OAN-SPM). The observations revealed a variable optical source whose position and periodicity P = 2.752h coincide with the pulsar coordinates and the orbital period obtained from radio timing. In the past five years, approximately one third of the 65 pulsars discovered by radio observations of Fermi unassociated sources are black widow pulsars (BWPs). BWPs are binary millisecond pulsars with companion masses ranging from 0.01-0.1 solar masses which often exhibit radio eclipses. The bloated companions in BWP systems exert small torques on the system causing the orbit to change on small but measurable time scales. Timing results for the black-widow pulsar J2051-0827 are presented, using a 21-year dataset from four European Pulsar Timing Array telescopes and the Parkes radio telescope. This dataset, which is the longest published to date for a black-widow system, allows for an improved analysis that addresses previously unknown biases. While secular variations, as identified in previous analyses, are recovered, short-term variations are detected for the first time. We report the discovery of 1.97 ms period gamma-ray pulsations from the 75 minute orbital-period binary pulsar now named PSR J1653-0158. The associated Fermi Large Area Telescope gamma-ray source 4FGL J1653.6-0158 has long been expected to harbor a binary millisecond pulsar. Despite the pulsar-like gamma-ray spectrum and candidate optical/X-ray associations -- whose periodic brightness modulations suggested an orbit -- no radio pulsations had been found in many searches. Over the last few years, the number of known eclipsing radio millisecond pulsar systems in the Galactic field has dramatically increased, with many being associated with Fermi gamma-ray sources. All are in tight binaries (orbital period < 24 hr) with many being classical "black widows" which have very low mass companions (companion mass Mc << 0.1 Msol) but some are "redbacks" with low mass (Mc ~ 0.2 - 0.4Msol) companions which are probably non-degenerate. These latter are systems where the mass transfer process may have only temporarily halted, and so are transitional systems between low mass …
In this review paper we explain the following gamma-ray emission features from the millisecond pulsars. (1)Why is the dipolar field of millisecond pulsars so weak but the magnetic pair creation process may still be able to control the size of the outergap? (2)A sub-GeV pulse component could occur in the vicinity of the radio pulse of millisecond pulsars. (3)Orbital modulated gamma-rays should exist in the black widow systems for large viewing angle.
A large number of new black widow and redback energetic millisecond pulsars with irradiated stellar companions have been discovered through radio searches of unidentified \emph{Fermi} sources. We construct a 3D emission model of these systems to predict the high-energy emission components from particles accelerated to several TeV in the intrabinary shocks, and its predicted modulation at the binary orbital period. Using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) we performed deep observations to search for radio pulsations in the directions of unidentified Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray sources. We report the discovery of an eclipsing black-widow millisecond pulsar, PSR J1544+4937, identified with the un-cataloged gamma-ray source Fermi J1544.2+4941. This 2.16 ms pulsar is in a 2.9 hours compact circular orbit with a very low-mass companion (Mc > 0.017 Msun). At 322 MHz this pulsar is found to be eclipsing for 13% of its orbit, whereas at 607 MHz the pulsar is detected throughout the low-fre…
