The pronounced dependence of the nonlinear parameters of both dielectric and semiconductor materials on the wavelength, and the nonlinear interaction between the ultra-short laser pulse and the material requires precise control of the wavelength of the pulse, in addition to the precise control of the pulse energy, pulse duration and focusing optics. This becomes particularly important for fine sub-wavelength single pulse sub-surface processing. Based on two different numerical models and taking Si as example material, we investigate the spatio-temporal behavior of a pulse propagating through the material while covering a broad range of parameters. The wavelength-dependence of material processing depends on the different contributions of two- and tree-photon absorption in combination with the Kerr effect which results in a particularly sharp nonlinear peak at ~2100 nm. We could show that in silicon this makes processing preferable close to this wavelength. The impact of the nonlinear nonparaxial propagation effects on spatio-temporal beam structure is also investigated. It could be shown that with increasing wavelength and large focusing angles the aberrations at the focal spot can be reduced, and thereby cleaner and more precise processing can be achieved. Finally, we could show that the optimum energy transfer from the pulse to the material is within a narrow window of pulse durations between 600 to 900 fs.
The two most commonly used models for passively modelocked lasers with fast saturable absorbers are the Haus modelocking equation (HME) and the cubic-quintic modelocking equation (CQME). The HME corresponds to a special limit of the CQME in which only a cubic nonlinearity in the fast saturable absorber is kept in the model. Here, we use singular perturbation theory to demonstrate that the CQME has a stable high-energy solution for an arbitrarily small but non-zero quintic contribution to the fast saturable absorber. As a consequence, we find that the CQME predicts the existence of stable model…
In this article we consider one dimensional model of an ultra short pulse propagation in isotropic dispersionless media taking into account a nonlinearity of the third order. We introduce a method for Maxwell's equations transformation based on a complete set of projecting operators. The operators generally correspond wave dispersion branches. As a simplest result of the method application we derive a system of equations describing dynamics of ultrashort pulses of opposite directions of propagation. We show that in such way the generalized Short Pulse Equations of Shafer and Wayne is obtained …
Ultrashort long-wave infrared (LWIR) laser pulses can resonantly excite vibrations in N2 and O2 through a two-photon transition. The absorptive, vibrational component of the ultrafast optical nonlinearity grows in time, starting smaller than, but quickly surpassing, the electronic, rotational, and vibrational refractive components. The growth of the vibrational component results in a novel mechanism of 3rd harmonic generation, providing an additional two-photon excitation channel, fundamental + 3rd harmonic. The original and emergent two-photon excitations drive the resonance exactly out of ph…
Although high field laser-induced ionization is a fundamental process underlying many applications, there have been no absolute measurements of the nonlinear polarizability of atoms and molecules in the presence of ionization. Such information is crucial, for example, for understanding the propagation of high intensity ultrashort pulses in matter. Here, we present absolute space- and time-resolved measurements of the ultrafast laser-driven nonlinear polarizability in argon, krypton, xenon, nitrogen, and oxygen up to an ionization fraction of a few percent. These measurements enable determinati…
The numerical simulations of an ultrashort pulse propagation in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal are carried out. It is known that the relaxation of cubic nonlinearity is the reason for the effect of pulse self-trapping in such multilayer system. In this paper we study further implications of this effect. It is shown that the trapped light absorbs additional low-intensity pulses which cannot be self-trapped \textit{per se}. On the other hand, such low-intensity pulses are subject of the so-called induced trapping when light gets trapped due to a collision of two such pulses. We con…
Self-mode-locking has become an emerging path to the generation of ultrashort pulses with vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers. In our work, a strong Kerr nonlinearity that is so far assumed to give rise to mode-locked operation is evidenced and a strong nonlinearity enhancement by the microcavity is revealed. We present wavelength-dependent measurements of the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear-refractive-index change in a gain chip using the Z-scan technique. We report negative nonlinear refraction up to 1.5E-11 cm2/W in magnitude in the (InGa)As/Ga(AsP) material system close to …
We describe the generation of stable mode-locked pulse trains from on-chip normal dispersion microresonators. The excitation of hyper-parametric oscillation is facilitated by the local dispersion disruptions induced by mode interactions. The system is then driven from hyper-parametric oscillation to the mode-locked state with over 200 nm spectral width by controlled pump power and detuning. With the continuous-wave driven nonlinearity, the pulses sit on a pedestal, akin to a cavity soliton. We identify the importance of pump detuning and wavelength-dependent quality factors in stabilizing and …
Analog photonic links require high-fidelity, high-speed optical-to-electrical conversion for applications such as radio-over-fiber, synchronization at kilometer-scale facilities, and low-noise electronic signal generation. Photodetector nonlinearity is a particularly vexing problem, causing signal distortion and excess noise, especially in systems utilizing ultrashort optical pulses. Here we show that photodetectors designed for high power handling and high linearity can perform optical-to-electrical conversion of ultrashort optical pulses with unprecedented linearity over a large photocurrent…
Propagation of ultrashort light pulses in disordered multilayers is studied by using numerical simulations in time domain. We consider cases of instantaneous and noninstantaneous Kerr nonlinearities of the structure materials. The competitive nature of disorder and nonlinearity is revealed on the long and short timescales. We also pay special attention to the effect of pulse self-trapping in the photonic crystal with relaxing nonlinearity and show the dependence of this effect on the level of disorder. We believe that the results reported here will be useful not only in the field of optics but…
Temporal solitons are optical pulses that arise from the balance of negative group-velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation. For decades only quadratic dispersion was considered, with higher order dispersion thought of as a nuisance. Following the recent reporting of pure-quartic solitons, we here provide experimental and numerical evidence for an infinite hierarchy of solitons that balance self-phase modulation and arbitrary negative pure, even-order dispersion. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of solitons with pure-sextic ($β_6$), -octic ($β_8$) and -decic ($β_{…
The quantum features of ultrashort-pulse optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are investigated theoretically in the nonlinear regime near and above threshold. Viewing the pulsed OPO as a multimode open quantum system, we rigorously derive a general input-output model that features nonlinear coupling among many cavity (i.e., system) signal modes and a broadband single-pass (i.e., reservoir) pump field. Under appropriate assumptions, our model produces a Lindblad master equation with multimode nonlinear Lindblad operators describing two-photon dissipation and a multimode four-wave-mixing Hamilt…
We propose a novel method based on the so-called shortcut to adiabatic passage techniques to achieve fast compression of temporal solitons in a nonlinear waveguide. We demonstrate that soliton compression could be achieved, in principle, at an arbitrarily small distance by inverse engineering the pulse width and the nonlinearity of the medium. The proposed scheme could possibly be exploited for various short-distance communication protocols and may be even in nonlinear guided wave-optics devices and generation of ultrashort soliton pulses.
Recently reported large values of exciton-polariton nonlinearity of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers coupled to optically resonant structures approach the values characteristic for GaAs-based systems in the regime of strong light-matter coupling. Contrary to the latter, TMD-based polaritonic devices remain operational at ambient conditions and therefore have greater potential for practical nanophotonic applications. Here we present the study of the nonlinear properties of Ta$_2$O$_5$ slab waveguide coupled to a WSe$_2$ monolayer. We first confirm that the hybridization between …
X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) are revolutionary photons sources, whose ultrashort, brilliant pulses are expected to allow single molecule diffraction experiments providing structural information on the atomic length scale. This ultimate goal, however, is currently hampered by several challenging questions basically concerning sample damage, Coulomb explosion and the role of nonlinearity. By employing an original \emph{ab-initio} approach, as well as exceptional resources of parallel computing, we address these issues showing that accurate XFEL-based single molecule imaging will be only pos…
The generation of ultrashort pulses hinges on the careful management of dispersion. Traditionally, this has exclusively involved second-order dispersion, while higher-order dispersion was treated as a nuisance to be minimized. Here we show that high-order dispersion can be strategically leveraged to access an uncharted regime of ultrafast laser operation. In particular, we demonstrate a mode-locked laser, with an intra-cavity spectral pulse-shaper, that emits pure-quartic soliton pulses, which arise from the interaction of the fourth-order dispersion and the Kerr nonlinearity. Using phase-reso…
Using the Jacobi Elliptic Functions, an analytical solution is developed for the nonlinear amplitude equation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) in a graphene-dielectric waveguide. It is shown that the field localization of SPPs coupled with TM polarized terahertz light can be enhanced if the nonlinearity is increased. On the side, a numerical solution based on Split Step Beam Propagation Method (SSBPM) suggests that spatial Modulation Instabilty (MI) can be dominant. Accordingly, larger nonlinearity leads to the generation of discrete plasmon solitons rather than the diffracted profile resu…
Dynamics of femtosecond pulses with the telecom carrier wavelength is investigated numerically in a subwavelength layer of an indium tin oxide (ITO) epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material with high dispersion and high nonlinearity. Due to the subwavelength thickness of the ITO ENZ material, and the fact that the pulse's propagation time is shorter than its temporal width, multiple reflections give rise to self-interaction in both spectral and temporal domains, especially at wavelengths longer than the ENZ point, at which the reflections are significantly stronger. A larger absolute value of the puls…
The theoretical calculation for nonlinear refractive index in Cr: ZnSe - active medium predicts the strong defocusing cascaded second-order nonlinearity within 2000 - 3000 nm spectral range. On the basis of this result the optimal cavity configuration for Kerr-lens mode locking is proposed that allows to achieve a sub-100 fs pulse duration. The numerical simulations testify about strong destabilizing processes in the laser resulting from a strong self-phase modulation. The stabilization of the ultrashort pulse generation is possible due to spectral filtering that increases the pulse duration u…

Determined polarization state of light is required in nonlinear optics applications related to ultrashort and single-cycle light pulse generation. Such short time scales require up to full octave of spectral width of light. Fiber-based, pulse-preserving and linearly polarized supercontinuum can meet these requirements. We report on the development - from linear simulations of the fiber structure, through fabrication of physical fibers to their versatile characterization - of polarization maintaining, highly nonlinear photonic crystal fibers, intended for femtosecond pumping at a wavelength of …
Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing …
The durations and average speeds of ultrashort optical pulses transmitted through chiral sculptured thin films (STFs) were calculated using a finite-difference time-domain algorithm. Chiral STFs are a class of nanoengineered materials whose microstructure comprises parallel helicoidal nanowires grown normal to a substrate. The nanowires are $\sim$10-300 nm in diameter and $\sim1-10 μ$m in length. Durations of transmitted pulses tend to increase with decreasing (free-space) wavelength of the carrier plane wave, while average speeds tend to increase with increasing wavelength. An increase in non…
