Companies are rushing to deliver their services and solutions through the cloud. The scheduling process is very critical in reducing delays. Scheduling also has a role in accessing resources without excessive waiting time. All this in context of modern advances in infrastructure and the emergence of Blockchain-as-a-service. What if integration is done between a hybrid scheduling algorithm and blockchain technology via the cloud. This integration aims to enhance and provide the service uninterruptedly. This method is distinguished, compared to other scheduling algorithms such as shortest-job-first and priority scheduling, that it does not suffer from starvation and it has a balanced load on resources. Based on analytical performance, the proposed hybrid scheduling has the markable result.
The blockchain technology has been extensively studied to enable distributed and tamper-proof data processing in federated learning (FL). Most existing blockchain assisted FL (BFL) frameworks have employed a third-party blockchain network to decentralize the model aggregation process. However, decentralized model aggregation is vulnerable to pooling and collusion attacks from the third-party blockchain network. Driven by this issue, we propose a novel BFL framework that features the integration of training and mining at the client side. To optimize the learning performance of FL, we propose to…
The essence of distributed computing systems is how to schedule incoming requests and how to allocate all computing nodes to minimize both time and computation costs. In this paper, we propose a cost-aware optimal scheduling and allocation strategy for distributed computing systems while minimizing the cost function including response time and service cost. First, based on the proposed cost function, we derive the optimal request scheduling policy and the optimal resource allocation policy synchronously. Second, considering the effects of incoming requests on the scheduling policy, the additiv…
Allocation of resources and their control over multiple organisations is challenging. This is especially true for a large-scale and dynamic system like the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the core issues in such a system is the provision of secure access control. In particular, transfer of access rights from one entity to another in a secure, flexible and fine-grained manner. In this paper, we present a multi-organisational delegation framework using blockchain. Our framework takes advantage of blockchain smart contracts to define the interactions and resource allocation between the consortiu…
With the development of mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain-based federated learning (BCFL), a number of studies suggest deploying BCFL on edge servers. In this case, resource-limited edge servers need to serve both mobile devices for their offloading tasks and the BCFL system for model training and blockchain consensus in a cost-efficient manner without sacrificing the service quality to any side. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a resource allocation scheme for edge servers, aiming to provide the optimal services with the minimum cost. Specifically, we first analyze the …
The serverless scheduling problem poses a new challenge to Cloud service platform providers because it is rather a job scheduling problem than a traditional resource allocation or request load balancing problem. Traditionally, elastic cloud applications use managed virtual resource allocation and employ request load balancers to orchestrate the deployment. With serverless, the provider needs to solve both the load balancing and the allocation. This work reviews the current Apache OpenWhisk serverless event load balancing and a noncooperative game-theoretic load balancing approach for response …
The cloud datacenter has numerous hosts as well as application requests where resources are dynamic. The demands placed on the resource allocation are diverse. These factors could lead to load imbalances, which affect scheduling efficiency and resource utilization. A scheduling method called Dynamic Resource Allocation for Load Balancing (DRALB) is proposed. The proposed solution constitutes two steps: First, the load manager analyzes the resource requirements such as CPU, Memory, Energy and Bandwidth usage and allocates an appropriate number of VMs for each application. Second, the resource i…
Resource management and scheduling plays a crucial role in achieving high utilization of resources in grid computing environments. Due to heterogeneity of resources, scheduling an application is significantly complicated and challenging task in grid system. Most of the researches in this area are mainly focused on to improve the performance of the grid system. There were some allocation model has been proposed based on divisible load theory with different type of workloads and a single originating processor. In this paper we introduce a new resource allocation model with multiple load originat…
With the development of federated learning (FL), mobile devices (MDs) are able to train their local models with private data and sends them to a central server for aggregation, thereby preventing sensitive raw data leakage. In this paper, we aim to improve the training performance of FL systems in the context of wireless channels and stochastic energy arrivals of MDs. To this purpose, we dynamically optimize MDs' transmission power and training task scheduling. We first model this dynamic programming problem as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP). Due to high dimensions rooted from ou…
This paper studies optimal scheduling and resource allocation under allowable over-scheduling. Formulating an optimisation problem where over-scheduling is embedded, we derive an optimal solution that can be implemented by means of a new additive increase multiplicative decrease (AIMD) algorithm. After describing the AIMD-like scheduling mechanism as a switching system, we show convergence of the scheme, based on the joint spectral radius of symmetric matrices, and propose two methods for fitting an optimal AIMD tuning to the optimal solution derived. Finally, we demonstrate the overall optima…
Cloud computing is a newly emerging distributed computing which is evolved from Grid computing. Task scheduling is the core research of cloud computing which studies how to allocate the tasks among the physical nodes so that the tasks can get a balanced allocation or each task's execution cost decreases to the minimum or the overall system performance is optimal. Unlike the previous task slices' sequential execution of an independent task in the model of which the target is processing time, we build a model that targets at the response time, in which the task slices are executed in parallel. T…
Although Metaverse has recently been widely studied, its practical application still faces many challenges. One of the severe challenges is the lack of sufficient resources for computing and communication on local devices, resulting in the inability to access the Metaverse services. To address this issue, this paper proposes a practical blockchain-based mobile edge computing (MEC) platform for resource sharing and optimal utilization to complete the requested offloading tasks, given the heterogeneity of servers' available resources and that of users' task requests. To be specific, we first ela…
Cloud Data centers aim to provide reliable, sustainable and scalable services for all kinds of applications. Resource scheduling is one of keys to cloud services. We study the problem of executing an application represented by a precedence task graph on a parallel machine composed of standard computing cores and accelerators. Contrary to most existing approaches, we distinguish the allocation and the scheduling phases and we mainly focus on the allocation part of the problem: choose the most appropriate type of computing unit for each task. We address both off-line and on-line settings and design generic scheduling approaches. In the first case, we establish strong lower bounds on the worst-case performance of a known approach based on Linear Programmin…

Federated learning (FL), as a distributed machine learning paradigm, promotes personal privacy by local data processing at each client. However, relying on a centralized server for model aggregation, standard FL is vulnerable to server malfunctions, untrustworthy server, and external attacks. To address this issue, we propose a decentralized FL framework by integrating blockchain into FL, namely, blockchain assisted decentralized federated learning (BLADE-FL). In a round of the proposed BLADE-FL, each client broadcasts the trained model to other clients, aggregates its own model with received …
It is interesting but difficult and challenging to study Ethereum with multiple mining pools. One of the main difficulties comes from not only how to represent such a general tree with multiple block branches (or sub-chains) related to the multiple mining pools, but also how to analyze a multi-dimensional stochastic system due to the mining competition among the multiple mining pools. In this paper, we first set up a mathematical representation for the tree with multiple block branches. Then we provide a block classification of Ethereum: Regular blocks (in the main chain), orphan blocks, uncle…
Blockchain has emerged as a promising technology that can guarantee data consistency and integrity among distributed participants. It has been used in many applications of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, since IoT applications often introduce a massive number of devices into blockchain systems, the efficiency of the blockchain becomes a serious problem. In this article, we analyze the key factors affecting the efficiency of blockchain. Unlike most existing solutions that handle this from the computing perspective, we consider the problem from the communication perspective. Particularly,…
Envisioned to be the future of secured distributed systems, blockchain networks have received increasing attention from both the industry and academia in recent years. However, blockchain mining processes demand high hardware costs and consume a vast amount of energy (studies have shown that the amount of energy consumed in Bitcoin mining is almost the same as the electricity used in Ireland). To address the high mining cost problem of blockchain networks, in this paper, we propose a blockchain mining resources allocation algorithm to reduce the mining cost in PoW-based (proof-of-work-based) b…

Training Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is a widely popular workload in both enterprises and cloud data centers. Existing schedulers for DNN training consider GPU as the dominant resource, and allocate other resources such as CPU and memory proportional to the number of GPUs requested by the job. Unfortunately, these schedulers do not consider the impact of a job's sensitivity to allocation of CPU, memory, and storage resources. In this work, we propose Synergy, a resource-sensitive scheduler for shared GPU clusters. Synergy infers the sensitivity of DNNs to different resources using optimistic p…

Computing workflows in heterogeneous multiprocessor systems are frequently modeled as directed acyclic graphs of tasks and data blocks, which represent computational modules and their dependencies in the form of data produced by a task and used by others. However, for some workflows, such as the task schedule in a digital signal processor may run out of memory by exposing too much parallelism. This paper focuses on the data allocation and task scheduling problem under memory constraints, and concentrates on shared memory platforms. We first propose an integer linear programming model to formul…
In the traditional mobile edge computing (MEC) system, the availability of MEC services is greatly limited for the edge users of the cell due to serious signal attenuation and inter-cell interference. User-centric MEC (UC-MEC) can be seen as a promising solution to address this issue. In UC-MEC, each user is served by a dedicated access point (AP) cluster enabled with MEC capability instead of a single MEC server, however, at the expense of more energy consumption and greater privacy risks. To achieve efficient and reliable resource utilization with user-centric services, we propose an energy …
This work presents the design and implementation of a blockchain system that enables the trustable transactive energy management for distributed energy resources (DERs). We model the interactions among DERs, including energy trading and flexible appliance scheduling, as a cost minimization problem. Considering the dispersed nature and diverse ownership of DERs, we develop a distributed algorithm to solve the optimization problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method. Furthermore, we develop a blockchain system, on which we implement the proposed algorithm with the…
