In this paper we are concerned with hydrodynamics of a class of $N$-urn linear systems, which include voter models, pair-symmetric exclusion processes and binary contact path processes on $N$ urns as special cases. We show that the hydrodynamic limit of our process is driven by a $\left(C[0,1]\right)^\prime$-valued linear ordinary differential equation and the fluctuation of our process, i.e, central limit theorem from the hydrodynamic limit, is driven by a $\left(C[0, 1]\right)^\prime$-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. To derive above main results, we need several replacement lemmas. An extension in linear systems of Chapman-Kolmogorov equation plays key role in proofs of these replacement lemmas.
In this paper we are concerned with $N$-urn susceptible-infected-removed epidemics, where each urn is in one of three states, namely `susceptible', `infected' and `removed'. We assume that recovery rates of infected urns and infection rates between infected and susceptible urns are all coordinate-dependent. We show that the hydrodynamic limit of our model is driven by a deterministic $(C[0, 1])^\prime$-valued process with density which is the solution to a nonlinear $C[0, 1]$-valued ordinary differential equation consistent with a mean-field analysis. We further show that the fluctuation of ou…
In this paper we are concerned with a generalized $N$-urn Ehrenfest model, where balls keeps independent random walks between $N$ boxes uniformly laid on $[0, 1]$. After a proper scaling of the transition rates function of the aforesaid random walk, we derive the hydrodynamic limit of the model, i.e., the law of large numbers which the empirical measure of the model follows, under an assumption where the initial number of balls in each box independently follows a Poisson distribution. We show that the empirical measure of the model converges weakly to a deterministic measure with density drive…
We obtain Azuma bounds for the probabilities of being away from the limit for a class of urn models. The method consists of relating the variables to certain linear combinations using eigenvectors of the replacement matrix, thus bringing in appropriate martingales. Some cases of repeated eigenvalues are also considered using Jordan vectors.
Consider a generalized time-dependent Pólya urn process defined as follows. Let $d\in \mathbb{N}$ be the number of urns/colors. At each time $n$, we distribute $σ_n$ balls randomly to the $d$ urns, proportionally to $f$, where $f$ is a valid reinforcement function. We consider a general class of positive reinforcement functions $\mathcal{R}$ assuming some monotonicity and growth condition. The class $\mathcal{R}$ includes convex functions and the classical case $f(x)=x^α$, $α>1$. The novelty of the paper lies in extending stochastic approximation techniques to the $d$-dimensional case and prov…
Motivated by mathematical tissue growth modelling, we consider the problem of approximating the dynamics of multicolor Pólya urn processes that start with large numbers of balls of different colors and run for a long time. Using strong approximation theorems for empirical and quantile processes, we establish Gaussian process approximations for the Pólya urn processes. The approximating processes are sums of a multivariate Brownian motion process and an independent linear drift with a random Gaussian coefficient. Which of the two terms dominates depends on the ratio of the number of time steps …
We consider a version of the classical Pólya urn scheme which incorporates innovations. The space $S$ of colors is an arbitrary measurable set. After each sampling of a ball in the urn, one returns $C$ balls of the same color and additional balls of different colors given by some finite point process $ξ$ on $S$. When the number of steps goes to infinity, the empirical distribution of the colors in the urn converges to the normalized intensity measure of $ξ$, and we analyze the fluctuations. The ratio $ρ= E(C)/E(R)$ of the average number of copies to the average total number of balls returned p…
The asymptotic behaviour of a generalised Pólya--Eggenberger urn is well--known to depend on the spectrum of its replacement matrix: If its dominant eigenvalue $r$ is simple and no other eigenvalue is `large' in the sense that its real part is greater than $r/2$, the normalized urn composition is asymptotically normally distributed. However, if there is more than one large eigenvalue, the first few random draws have a non--negligible effect on the evolution of the urn process and almost sure random tendencies of order larger than $\sqrt{n}$ typically prevent a classical central limit theorem. …
In this paper, we prove functional limit theorems for Pólya urn processes whose number of draws and initial number of balls tend to infinity together. This is motivated by recent work of Borovkov [5], where they prove a functional limit theorem for this model when the urn has identity replacement rule. We generalize this result to arbitrary balanced replacement rules (the total number of balls added to the urn is deterministic). Three asymptotic regimes are possible depending on how one lets the number of initial balls scale with the number of draws of the urn. In each regime, we show a first …
We introduce a broad class of random graph models: the generalised hypergeometric ensemble (GHypEG). This class enables to solve some long standing problems in random graph theory. First, GHypEG provides an elegant and compact formulation of the well-known configuration model in terms of an urn problem. Second, GHypEG allows to incorporate arbitrary tendencies to connect different vertex pairs. Third, we present the closed-form expressions of the associated probability distribution ensures the analytical tractability of our formulation. This is in stark contrast with the previous state-of-the-…
We propose an elementary but effective approach to studying a general class of Poissonized tenable and balanced urns on two colors. We characterize the asymptotic behavior of the process via a partial differential equation that governs the process, coupled with the method of moments applied in a bootstrapped manner. We show that the limiting distribution of the process underlying the Bagchi-Pal urn is gamma. We also look into the tenable and balanced processes associated with randomized replacement matrix. Similar results carry over to the process, with minor modifications in the methods of pr…
We consider stochastic UL and LU block factorizations of the one-step transition probability matrix for a discrete-time quasi-birth-and-death process, namely a stochastic block tridiagonal matrix. The simpler case of random walks with only nearest neighbors transitions gives a unique LU factorization and a one-parameter family of factorizations in the UL case. The block structure considered here yields many more possible factorizations resulting in a much enlarged class of potential applications. By reversing the order of the factors (also known as a Darboux transformation) we get new families…
The Pólya urn scheme is a discrete-time process concerning the addition and removal of colored balls. There is a known embedding of it in continuous-time, called the Pólya process. We deal with a generalization of this stochastic model, where the initial values and the entries of the transition matrix (corresponding to additions or removals) are not necessarily fixed integer values as in the standard Pólya process. In one of the scenarios, we even allow the entries of the matrix to be random variables. As a result, we no longer have a combinatorial model of "balls in an urn," but a broader int…
We study the limit behaviour of a class of random walk models taking values in the $d$-dimensional unit standard simplex, $d\ge 1$, defined as follows. From an interior point $z$, the process chooses one of the $d+1$ vertices of the simplex, with probabilities depending on $z$, and then the particle randomly jumps to a new location $z'$ on the segment connecting $z$ to the chosen vertex. In some specific cases, using properties of the Beta distribution, we prove that the limiting distributions of the Markov chain are, in fact, Dirichlet. We also consider a related history-dependent random walk…
We study a model, introduced initially by Gates and Westcott to describe crystal growth evolution, which belongs to the Anisotropic KPZ universality class. It can be thought of as a $(2+1)$-dimensional generalisation of the well known (1+1)-dimensional Polynuclear Growth Model (PNG). We show the full hydrodynamic limit of this process i.e the convergence of the random interface height profile after ballistic space-time scaling to the viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi PDE: $\partial_tu = v(\nabla u)$ with $v$ an explicit non-convex speed function. The convergence holds in the strong almos…
A network epidemics model based on the classical Polya urn scheme is investigated. Temporal contagion processes are generated on the network nodes using a modified Polya sampling scheme that accounts for spatial infection among neighbouring nodes. The stochastic properties and the asymptotic behaviour of the resulting network contagion process are analyzed. Unlike the classical Polya process, the network process is noted to be non-stationary in general, although it is shown to be time-invariant in its first and some of its second-order statistics and to satisfy martingale convergence propertie…
