The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the nearest laboratory for detailed studies on the formation and survival of complex organic molecules (COMs), including biologically important ones, in low-metallicity environments--typical for earlier cosmological epochs. We report the results of 1.2 mm continuum and molecular line observations of three fields in the star-forming region N105 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). N105 lies at the western edge of the LMC bar with on-going star formation traced by H$_2$O, OH, and CH$_3$OH masers, ultracompact H II regions, and young stellar objects. Based on the spectral line modeling, we estimated rotational temperatures, column densities, and fractional molecular abundances for twelve 1.2 mm continuum sources. We identified sources with a range of chemical make-ups, including two bona fide hot cores and four hot core candidates. The CH$_3$OH emission is widespread and associated with all the continuum sources. COMs CH$_3$CN and CH$_3$OCH$_3$ are detected toward two hot cores in N105 together with smaller molecules typically found in Galactic hot cores (e.g., SO$_2$, SO, and HNCO) with the molecular abundances roughly scaling with metallicity. We report a tentative detection of the astrobiologically relevant formamide molecule (NH$_2$CHO) toward one of the hot cores; if confirmed, this would be the first detection of NH$_2$CHO in an extragalactic sub-solar metallicity environment. We suggest that metallicity inhomogeneities resulting from the tidal interactions between the LMC and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) might have led to the observed large variations in COM abundances in LMC hot cores.
We present 1.3 and 3.2 mm continuum maps of three star forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The data were taken as part of two projects retrieved from the ALMA public archive plus one project observed specifically for this work. We develop a technique to combine maps at these wavelengths to estimate dust-only emission corrected for free-free emission contamination. From these observations we identify 32 molecular clumps in the LMC and estimate their total mass from their dust emission to range from 205 to 574…
(Abridged)We characterize gas and dust emission in Magellanic Bridge A, which has the highest 870$μ$m excess of emission found in single dish surveys. Using the ALMA telescope, we mapped the Magellanic Bridge A molecular cloud with sub-parsec resolution, in 1.3 mm continuum and CO(2-1) line emission. We also map the cloud in 870$μ$m continuum and CO(2-1) line emission at ~6 pc resolution with APEX. We combine the ALMA and APEX CO(2-1) line cubes to study the molecular gas emission. Magellanic Bridge A breaks up into two distinct molecular clouds in dust and CO(2-1) emission, which we call Nort…
Protostellar outflows are one of the most outstanding features of star formation. Observational studies over the last several decades have successfully demonstrated that outflows are ubiquitously associated with low- and high-mass protostars in the solar-metallicity Galactic conditions. However, the environmental dependence of protostellar outflow properties is still poorly understood, particularly in the low-metallicity regime. Here we report the first detection of a molecular outflow in the Small Magellanic Cloud with 0.2 $Z_{\odot}$, using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observ…
We present the results of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observation in $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission at 0.58 $\times$ 0.52 pc$^2$ resolution toward the brightest HII region N66 of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission toward the north of N66 reveals the clumpy filaments with multiple velocity components. Our analysis shows that a blueshifted filament at a velocity range 154.4-158.6 km s$^{-1}$ interacts with a redshifted filament at a velocity 158.0-161.8 km s$^{-1}$. A third velocity component in a velocity range 161-165.0 km s$^{-1}$ constitutes hub-fi…
We report the first detection of deuterated water (HDO) toward an extragalactic hot core. The HDO 2$_{11}$-2$_{12}$ line has been detected toward hot cores N105-2A and 2B in the N105 star-forming region in the low-metallicity Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) dwarf galaxy with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We have compared the HDO line luminosity ($L_{\rm HDO}$) measured toward the LMC hot cores to those observed toward a sample of seventeen Galactic hot cores covering three orders of magnitude in $L_{\rm HDO}$, four orders of magnitude in bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm b…
We report the first detection of a hot molecular core outside our Galaxy based on radio observations with ALMA toward a high-mass young stellar object (YSO) in a nearby low metallicity galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Molecular emission lines of CO, C17O, HCO+, H13CO+, H2CO, NO, SiO, H2CS, 33SO, 32SO2, 34SO2, and 33SO2 are detected from a compact region (0.1 pc) associated with a high-mass YSO, ST11. The temperature of molecular gas is estimated to be higher than 100 K based on rotation diagram analysis of SO2 and 34SO2 lines. The compact source size, warm gas temperature, high densit…
We report the results of subparsec-scale submillimeter observations towards an embedded high-mass young stellar object in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with ALMA. Complementary infrared data obtained with the AKARI satellite and the Gemini South telescope are also presented. The target infrared point source is spatially resolved into two dense molecular cloud cores; one is associated with a high-mass young stellar object (YSO core), while another is not associated with an infrared source (East core). The two cores are dynamically associated but show different chemical characteristics. Emiss…
We present the results of high spatial resolution HCO$^{+}$($1-0$) and HCN($1-0$) observations of N55 south region (N55-S) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). N55-S is a relatively less extreme star-forming region of the LMC characterized by a low radiation field. We carried out a detailed analysis of the molecular emission to investigate the relation between dense molecular clumps and star formation in the quiescent environment of N55-S. We detect ten molecular clumps with significant HCO$^{+}(1-0)$ emission and eight wit…
We have conducted ALMA CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum observations toward filamentary molecular clouds of the N159W-South region in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an angular resolution of $\sim$0"25 ($\sim$0.07 pc). Although the previous lower-resolution ($\sim$1") ALMA observations revealed that there is a high-mass protostellar object at an intersection of two line-shaped filaments in $^{13}$CO with the length scale of $\sim$10 pc, the spatially resolved observations, in particular, toward the highest column density part traced by the 1.3 mm continuum emission, the N159W-South clump, show…
We present the ALMA observations of CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward the N159E-Papillon Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The spatial resolution is 0"25-0"28 (0.06-0.07 pc), which is a factor of 3 higher than the previous ALMA observations in this region. The high resolution allowed us to resolve highly filamentary CO distributions with typical widths of $\sim$0.1 pc (full width half maximum) and line masses of a few 100 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-1}$. The filaments (more than ten in number) show an outstanding hub-filament structure emanating from the nebular center toward th…
ALMA 0.1 pc View of Molecular Clouds Associated with High-Mass Protostellar Systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Are Low-Metallicity Clouds Filamentary or Not?
We have performed Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations in $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$), $^{13}$CO($J=2-1$), C$^{18}$O($J=2-1$), $^{12}$CO($J=3-2$), $^{13}$CO($J=3-2$), and CS($J=7-6$) lines toward the active star-forming region N83C in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), whose metallicity is $\sim$ 1/5 of the Milky Way (MW). The ALMA observations first reveal sub-pc scale molecular structures in $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) and $^{13}$CO($J=2-1$) emission. We found strong CO peaks associated with young stellar objects (YSOs) identified by the $Spitzer$ Space Telescope, and also found tha…
We present high-resolution (sub-parsec) observations of a giant molecular cloud in the nearest star-forming galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. ALMA Band 6 observations trace the bulk of the molecular gas in $^{12}$CO(2-1) and high column density regions in $^{13}$CO(2-1). Our target is a quiescent cloud (PGCC G282.98-32.40, which we refer to as the "Planck cold cloud" or PCC) in the southern outskirts of the galaxy where star-formation activity is very low and largely confined to one location. We decompose the cloud into structures using a dendrogram and apply an identical analysis to matched…
Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation of populous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angular resolution of $\sim$0."25($\sim$0.07 pc) revealed more than five protostellar sources with CO outflows within the main ridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows especially massive/dense nature whose total H$_2$ mass and peak column density are $\sim$10$^{4…

We present the molecular cloud properties of N55 in the Large Magellanic Cloud using $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) observations obtained with Atacama Large Millimeter Array. We have done a detailed study of molecular gas properties, to understand how the cloud properties of N55 differ from Galactic clouds. Most CO emission appears clumpy in N55, and molecular cores that have YSOs show larger linewidths and masses. The massive clumps are associated with high and intermediate mass YSOs. The clump masses are determined by local thermodynamic equilibrium and virial analysis of the $^{12}$CO an…
Studying the driving modes of turbulence is important for characterizing the impact of turbulence in various astrophysical environments. The driving mode of turbulence is parameterized by $b$, which relates the width of the gas density PDF to the turbulent Mach number; $b\approx 1/3$, $1$, and $0.4$ correspond to driving that is solenoidal, compressive, and a natural mixture of the two, respectively. In this work, we use high-resolution (sub-pc) ALMA $^{12}$CO ($J$ = $2-1$), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = $2-1$), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = $2-1$) observations of filamentary molecular clouds in the star-forming re…
We present the ALMA view of 11 main-sequence DSFGs, (sub-)millimeter selected in the GOODS-S field, and spectroscopically confirmed to be at the peak of Cosmic SFH (z = 2-3). Our study combines the analysis of galaxy SED with ALMA continuum and CO spectral emission, by using ALMA Science Archive products at the highest spatial resolution currently available for our sample (< 1 arcsec). We include galaxy multi-band images and photometry (in the optical, radio and X-rays) to investigate the interlink between dusty, gaseous and stellar components and the eventual presence of AGN. We use multi-ban…
Using a sample of 11,478 spaxels in 34 galaxies with molecular gas, star formation and stellar maps taken from the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, we investigate the parameters that correlate with variations in star formation rates on kpc scales. We use a combination of correlation statistics and an artificial neural network to quantify the parameters that drive both the absolute star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), as well as its scatter around the resolved star forming main sequence (Delta Sigma_SFR). We find that Sigma_SFR is primarily regulated by mo…
We report the first extragalactic detection of the complex organic molecules (COMs) dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$) and methyl formate (CH$_3$OCHO) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). These COMs together with their parent species methanol (CH$_3$OH), were detected toward two 1.3 mm continuum sources in the N 113 star-forming region in the low-metallicity Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Rotational temperatures ($T_{\rm rot}\sim130$ K) and total column densities ($N_{\rm rot}\sim10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$) have been calculated for each source based on multiple transitions of CH$_3…
In order to investigate the role of gas in the demise of star formation on kpc-scales, we compare the resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS: Sigma_* vs Sigma_H2) of star-forming regions to the sequence of `retired' regions that have ceased to form new stars. Using data from the ALMaQUEST survey, we find that retired spaxels form a rMGMS that is distinct from that of star-forming spaxels, offset to lower Sigma_H2 at fixed Sigma_* by a factor of ~5. We study the rMGMS of star-forming and retired spaxels on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis for eight individual ALMaQUEST galaxies. Six of these galax…
We report optical-infrared (IR) properties of faint 1.3 mm sources (S_1.3mm = 0.2-1.0 mJy) detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. We searched for optical/IR counterparts of 8 ALMA-detected sources (>=4.0 sigma, the sum of the probability of spurious source contamination is ~1) in a K-band source catalog. Four ALMA sources have K-band counterpart candidates within a 0.4" radius. Comparison between ALMA-detected and undetected K-band sources in the same observing fields shows that ALMA-detected sources tend to be b…
We present results on the dust attenuation of galaxies at redshift $\sim3-6$ by studying the relationship between the UV spectral slope ($β_{\rm UV}$) and the infrared excess (IRX; $L_{\rm IR}$/$L_{\rm UV}$) using ALMA far-infrared continuum observations. Our study is based on a sample of 67 massive, star-forming galaxies with a median mass of $M_{\ast}\sim 10^{10.7}\,M_{\rm \odot}$ spanning a redshift range $z=2.6-3.7$ (median $z=3.2$) that were observed with ALMA at $λ_{rest}=300\,{\rm μm}$. Both the individual ALMA detections (41 sources) and stacks including all galaxies show the IRX-$β_{\…

We carry out a blind search of 3mm continuum sources using the ALMA Science Archive to derive the first galaxy number counts at this wavelength. The analyzed data are drawn from observations towards three extragalactic legacy fields: COSMOS, CDF-S, and the UDS comprising more than 130 individual ALMA Band 3 pointings and an effective survey area of ~200 sq. arcmin with a continuum sensitivity that allows for the direct detection of unlensed Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies (DSFGs) dust emission beyond the epoch of reionization. We present a catalog of 16 sources detected at >5sigma with flux densit…
The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), gas-rich dwarf companions of the Milky Way, are the nearest laboratories for detailed studies on the formation and survival of complex organic molecules (COMs) under metal poor conditions. To date, only methanol, methyl formate, and dimethyl ether have been detected in these galaxies - all three toward two hot cores in the N113 star-forming region in the LMC, the only extragalactic sources exhibiting complex hot core chemistry. We describe a small and diverse sample of the LMC and SMC sources associated with COMs or hot core chemistry, and c…
N132D is the brightest gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) observations toward the SNR using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We find diffuse CO emission not only at the southern edge of the SNR as previously known, but also inside the X-ray shell. We spatially resolved nine molecular clouds using ALMA with an angular resolution of $5''$, corresponding to a spatial resolution of $\sim$1 pc at the distance of the LMC. Typical cloud sizes and masses a…
We present near-infrared polarimetric results for N159/N160 star-forming complex, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with SIRPOL, the polarimeter of the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF). We separated foreground sources using their visual extinction derived from near-infrared photometric data. The 45 young stellar candidates and 2 high excitation blobs were matched with our sources, and 12 of them showed the high polarization that was not originated from the interstellar dust. We made a polarimetric catalog of 252, 277, and 89 sources at $J$, $H$, and $K_s$ bands, respectively. Based on the rat…
Cold hydrogen gas is the raw fuel for star formation in galaxies, and its partition into atomic and molecular phases is a key quantity for galaxy evolution. In this Letter, we combine Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and Arecibo single-dish observations to estimate the molecular-to-atomic hydrogen mass ratio for massive star-forming galaxies at $z\sim$ 0.2 extracted from the HIGHz survey, i.e., some of the most massive gas-rich systems currently known. We show that the balance between atomic and molecular hydrogen in these galaxies is similar to that of local main-sequence disks, i…
We present an analysis of the dust attenuation of star forming galaxies at $z=2.5-4.0$ through the relationship between the UV spectral slope ($β$), stellar mass ($M_{\ast}$) and the infrared excess (IRX$=L_{\rm{IR}}/L_{\rm{UV}}$) based on far-infrared continuum observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). Our study exploits the full ALMA archive over the COSMOS field processed by the A$^3$COSMOS team, which includes an unprecedented sample of $\sim1500$ galaxies at $z\sim3$ as primary or secondary targets in ALMA band 6 or 7 observations with a median continuum …
We conducted sub-millimeter observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) of star-forming galaxies at $z\sim3.3$, whose gas-phase metallicities have been previously measured. We investigate the dust and gas contents of the galaxies at $z\sim3.3$ and study how galaxies are interacting with their circumgalactic/intergalactic medium at this epoch by probing their gas mass fractions and gas-phase metallicities. Single-band dust continuum emission tracing dust mass and the relation between the gas-phase metallicity and gas-to-dust mass ratio are used to estimate the gas…
Galaxy clusters at high redshift are key targets for understanding matter assembly in the early Universe, yet they are challenging to locate. A sample of >2000 high-z candidate structures has been found using Planck's all-sky submm maps, and a sub-set of 234 have been followed up with Herschel-SPIRE, which showed that the emission can be attributed to large overdensities of dusty star-forming galaxies. In order to resolve and characterise the individual galaxies we targeted the eight brightest SPIRE sources in the centre of the Planck peak PLCK G073.4-57.5 using ALMA at 1.3 mm, and complemente…
We present first results from the SXDF-ALMA 1.5 arcmin^2 deep survey at 1.1 mm using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The map reaches a 1sigma depth of 55 uJy/beam and covers 12 Halpha-selected star-forming galaxies at z = 2.19 or z=2.53. We have detected continuum emission from three of our Halpha-selected sample, including one compact star-forming galaxy with high stellar surface density, NB2315-07. They are all red in the rest-frame optical and have stellar masses of log (M*/Msun)>10.9 whereas the other blue, main-sequence galaxies with log(M*/Msun)=10.0-10.8 are exceedingly faint, <2…
N103B is a Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) and $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations using ASTE and ALMA. We have confirmed the existence of a giant molecular cloud (GMC) at $V_\mathrm{LSR}$ $\sim$245 km s$^{-1}$ towards the southeast of the SNR using ASTE $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) data at an angular resolution of $\sim$25$"$ ($\sim$6 pc in the LMC). Using the ALMA $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) data, we have spatially resolved CO clouds along the southeastern edge of the SNR with an angular resolution of $\sim$1.8$"$ ($\sim$0.4 pc in t…
We derive the mass-radius relation and mass function of molecular clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and interpret them in terms of the simple feedback model proposed by Fall, Krumholz, and Matzner (FKM). Our work utilizes the dendrogram-based catalog of clumps compiled by Wong et al. from $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO maps of six giant molecular clouds in the LMC observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The Magellanic Clouds are the only external galaxies for which this type of analysis is possible at the necessary spatial resolution ($\sim1$ pc). We find that the mass-radiu…
We have modelled high resolution ALMA imaging of six strong gravitationally lensed galaxies detected by the Herschel Space Observatory. Our modelling recovers mass properties of the lensing galaxies and, by determining magnification factors, intrinsic properties of the lensed sub-millimetre sources. We find that the lensed galaxies all have high ratios of star formation rate to dust mass, consistent with or higher than the mean ratio for high redshift sub-millimetre galaxies and low redshift ultra-luminous infra-red galaxies. Source reconstruction reveals that most galaxies exhibit disturbed m…
We present high-fidelity, 30 milliarcsecond (200-pc) resolution ALMA rest-frame 240 $μ$m observations of cold dust emission in three typical main-sequence star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z \sim 3$ in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF). The cold dust is distributed within the smooth disk-like central regions of star formation $1 - 3$ kpc in diameter, despite their complex and disturbed rest-frame UV and optical morphologies. No dust substructures or clumps are seen down to $\simeq 1- 3$ $M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ (1$σ$) per 200-pc beam. No dust emission is observed at the locations of UV-emitting clum…
The origin of the star forming main sequence ( i.e., the relation between star formation rate and stellar mass, globally or on kpc-scales; hereafter SFMS) remains a hotly debated topic in galaxy evolution. Using the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, we show that for star forming spaxels in the main sequence galaxies, the three local quantities, star-formation rate surface density (\sigsfr), stellar mass surface density (\sigsm), and the \h2~mass surface density (\sigh2), are strongly correlated with one another and form a 3D linear (in log) relation with dispersion. I…
We present spatially-resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 870 $μ$m dust continuum maps of six massive, compact, dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z\sim2.5$. These galaxies are selected for their small rest-frame optical sizes ($r_{\rm e, F160W}\sim1.6$ kpc) and high stellar-mass densities that suggest that they are direct progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2$. The deep observations yield high far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of L$_{\rm IR}=10^{12.3-12.8}$ L$_{\odot}$ and star formation rates (SFRs) of SFR$=200-700$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, consistent w…
We present ~0.15'' spatial resolution imaging of SHiZELS-14, a massive (M*~10^11 M_sol), dusty, star-forming galaxy at z=2.24. Our rest-frame ~1kpc-scale, matched-resolution data comprise four different widely used tracers of star formation: the H-alpha emission line (from SINFONI/VLT), rest-frame UV continuum (from HST F606W imaging), the rest-frame far-infrared (from ALMA), and the radio continuum (from JVLA). Although originally identified by its modest H-alpha emission line flux, SHiZELS-14 appears to be a vigorously star-forming (SFR~1000 M_sol/yr) example of a submillimeter galaxy, proba…
We report ALMA observations of $^{12}$CO(3-2) and $^{13}$CO(3-2) in the gas-poor dwarf galaxy NGC 5253. These 0.3"(5.5 pc) resolution images reveal small, dense molecular gas clouds that are located in kinematically distinct, extended filaments. Some of the filaments appear to be falling into the galaxy and may be fueling its current star formation. The most intense CO(3-2) emission comes from the central $\sim$100 pc region centered on the luminous radio-infrared HII region known as the supernebula. The CO(3-2) clumps within the starburst region are anti-correlated with H$α$ on $\sim$5 pc sca…
Magellanic Bridge C (MB-C) is a metal-poor ($\sim$1/5 $Z_{\odot}$) low-density star-forming region located 59 kpc away in the Magellanic Bridge, offering a resolved view of the star formation process in conditions different to the Galaxy. From Atacama Large Millimetre Array CO (1-0) observations, we detect molecular clumps associated to candidate young stellar objects (YSOs), pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, and filamentary structure identified in far-infrared imaging. YSOs and PMS stars form in molecular gas having densities between 17-200 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$, and have ages between $\lesssim$…
We present morphological properties of dusty star-forming galaxies at z=1-3 determined with high-resolution (FWHM~0"19) Atacama Large Milllimeter/submilimeter Array (ALMA) 1-mm band maps of our ASAGAO survey covering a 26-arcmin^2 area in GOODS-S. In conjunction with the ALMA archival data, the present sample consists of 42 ALMA sources with a wide rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) luminosity L_FIR range of ~10^11-10^13 Lo. To obtain an average rest-frame FIR profile, we perform individual measurements and careful stacking of the ALMA sources using the uv-visibility method that includes positional…
Nuclear activity and star formation play relevant roles in the early stages of galaxy formation. We aim at identifying them in high redshift galaxies by exploiting high-resolution and sensitivity X-ray and mm data to confirm their presence and relative role in contributing to the galaxy SEDs and energy budget. We present the data, model and analysis in the X-ray and mm bands for two strongly lensed galaxies, SDP.9 and SDP.11, selected in the Herschel-ATLAS catalogues as having an excess emission in the mid-IR regime at z>1.5, suggesting nuclear activity in the early stages of galaxy formation.…
We present the first ALMA dust polarization observations towards the high-mass star-forming regions W51 e2, e8, and W51 North in Band 6 (230 GHz) with a resolution around 0.26" ($\sim5$mpc). Polarized emission in all three sources is clearly detected and resolved. Measured relative polarization levels are between 0.1\% and 10\%. While the absolute polarization shows complicated structures, the relative polarization displays the typical anti-correlation with Stokes $I$, though with a large scatter. Inferred magnetic (B) field morphologies are organized and connected. Detailed substructures are …
We present 1.3- and/or 3-mm continuum images and 3-mm spectral scans, obtained using NOEMA and ALMA, of 21 distant, dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Our sample is a subset of the galaxies selected by Ivison et al. (2016) on the basis of their extremely red far-infrared (far-IR) colours and low {\it Herschel} flux densities; most are thus expected to be unlensed, extraordinarily luminous starbursts at $z \gtrsim 4$, modulo the considerable cross-section to gravitational lensing implied by their redshift. We observed 17 of these galaxies with NOEMA and four with ALMA, scanning through the 3…
We present the average [CII] $158\,\rm{μm}$ emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [CII] $158\,\rm{μm}$ emission lines and dust continua observed by ALMA, taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We find that the average [CII] emission at $z\sim7$ has an effective radius $r_e$ of $2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$. It is $\gtrsim2\times$ larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for $z\lesssim6$ galaxies. A…
We utilize the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnch and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey to investigate the kpc-scale scaling relations, presented as the resolved star forming main sequence (rSFMS: $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ vs. $Σ_{*}$), the resolved Schmidt-Kennicutt relation (rSK: $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ vs. $Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$), and the resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS: $Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$ vs. $Σ_{*}$), for 11478 star-forming and 1414 retired spaxels (oversampled by a factor of $\sim20$) located in 22 green valley (GV) and 12 main sequence (MS) galaxies. This study explores the link between the [OIII]88mu emission, a well-known tracer of HII regions, and 24mu continuum, often used to trace warm dust in the ionized phases of galaxies. We investigate the local conditions driving the relation between those tracers in the Magellanic Clouds, comparing observations with Cloudy models consisting of an HII region plus a photodissociation region (PDR) component, varying the stellar age, the initial density (at the illuminated edge of the cloud), and the ionization parameter. We introduce a new parameter, cPDR, to quantify the proportion of emission ari…
Our objectives are to determine the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) and of star-formation in typical star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Following up on our previous multi-wavelength observations with HST, Spitzer, Herschel, and the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), we have studied a strongly lensed z=2.013 galaxy, the arc behind the galaxy cluster MACS J0451+0006, with ALMA to measure the [CII] 158 micron emission line, one of the main coolants of the ISM. [CII] emission from the southern part of this galaxy is detected at 10 $σ$. Taking into account strong gravitational …
Wide, deep, blind continuum surveys at submillimetre/millimetre (submm/mm) wavelengths are required to provide a full inventory of the dusty, distant Universe. However, conducting such surveys to the necessary depth, with sub-arcsec angular resolution, is prohibitively time-consuming, even for the most advanced submm/mm telescopes. Here, we report the most recent results from the ALMACAL project, which exploits the 'free' calibration data from the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) to map the lines of sight towards and beyond the ALMA calibrators. ALMACAL has now covered 1,001…
