Gradients in the stellar populations (SP) of galaxies -- e.g., in age, metallicity, stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) -- can result in gradients in the stellar mass to light ratio, $M_*/L$. Such gradients imply that the distribution of the stellar mass and light are different. For old SPs, e.g., in early-type galaxies at $z\sim 0$, the $M_*/L$ gradients are weak if driven by variations in age and metallicity, but significantly larger if driven by the IMF. A gradient which has larger $M_*/L$ in the center increases the estimated total stellar mass ($M_*$) and reduces the scale which contains half this mass ($R_{e,*}$), compared to when the gradient is ignored. For the IMF gradients inferred from fitting MILES simple SP models to the H$_β$, $\langle$Fe$\rangle$, [MgFe] and TiO$_{\rm 2SDSS}$ absorption lines measured in spatially resolved spectra of early-type galaxies in the MaNGA survey, the fractional change in $R_{e,*}$ can be significantly larger than that in $M_*$, especially when the light is more centrally concentrated. The $R_{e,*}-M_*$ correlation which results is offset by 0.3 dex to smaller sizes compared to when these gradients are ignored. Comparisons with `quiescent' galaxies at higher-$z$ must account for evolution in SP gradients (especially age and IMF) and the light profile before drawing conclusions about how $R_{e,*}$ and $M_*$ evolve. The implied merging between higher-$z$ and the present is less contrived if $R_{e,*}/R_e$ at $z\sim 0$ is closer to our IMF-driven gradient calibration than to unity.
We study systematics associated with estimating simple stellar population (SSP) parameters -- age, metallicity [M/H], $α$-enhancement [$α$/Fe] and IMF shape -- and associated $M_*/L$ gradients, of elliptical slow rotators (E-SRs), fast rotators (E-FRs) and S0s from stacked spectra of galaxies in the MaNGA survey. These systematics arise from (i) how one normalizes the spectra when stacking; (ii) having to subtract emission before estimating absorption line strengths; (iii) the decision to fit the whole spectrum or just a few absorption lines; (iv) SSP model differences (e.g. isochrones, enrich…
We analyze the stellar initial mass functions (IMF) of a large sample of early type galaxies (ETGs) provided by MaNGA. The large number of IFU spectra of individual galaxies provide high signal-to-noise composite spectra that are essential for constraining IMF and to investigate possible radial gradients of the IMF within individual galaxies. The large sample of ETGs also make it possible to study how the IMF shape depends on various properties of galaxies. We adopt a novel approach to study IMF variations in ETGs, use Bayesian inferences based on full spectrum fitting. The Bayesian method pro…
As hosts of living high-mass stars, Wolf-Rayet (WR) regions or WR galaxies are ideal objects for constraining the high-mass end of the stellar initial mass function (IMF). We construct a large sample of 910 WR galaxies/regions that cover a wide range of stellar metallicity (from Z~0.001 up to Z~0.03), by combining three catalogs of WR galaxies/regions previously selected from the SDSS and SDSS-IV/MaNGA surveys. We measure the equivalent widths of the WR blue bump at ~4650 A for each spectrum. They are compared with predictions from stellar evolutionary models Starburst99 and BPASS, with differ…
We estimate ages, metallicities, $α$-element abundance ratios and stellar initial mass functions of elliptical (E) and S0 galaxies from the MaNGA-DR15 survey. We stack spectra and use a variety of single stellar population synthesis models to interpret the absorption line strengths in these spectra. We quantify how these properties vary across the population, as well as with galactocentric distance. This paper is the first of a series and is based on a sample of pure elliptical galaxies at z $\le$ 0.08. We show that the properties of the inner regions of Es with the largest luminosity (L$_r$) …
MaNGA DynPop -- V. The dark-matter fraction versus stellar velocity dispersion relation and stellar initial mass function variations in galaxies: dynamical models and full spectrum fitting of integral-field spectroscopy
We present new observations of two z=0.12 strong-lensing elliptical galaxies, originally discovered from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, using the new FOCAS IFU spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. For J1436+4943, our observations confirm the identification of this system as a multiple-image lens, in a cusp configuration, with Einstein radius $θ_{Ein}$=2.0 arcsec. For J1701+3722, the improved data confirm earlier hints of a complex source plane, with different configurations evident in different emission lines. The new observations reveal a previously unseen inner counter-image to the [OIII] arc fo…
The stellar mass-to-light ratio gradient in SDSS $r-$band $\nabla (M_*/L_r)$ of a galaxy depends on its mass assembly history, which is imprinted in its morphology and gradients of age, metallicity, and stellar initial mass function (IMF). Taking a MaNGA sample of 2051 galaxies with stellar masses ranging from $10^9$ to $10^{12}M_\odot$ released in SDSS DR15, we focus on face-on galaxies, without merger and bar signatures, and investigate the dependence of the 2D $\nabla (M_*/L_r)$ on other galaxy properties, including $M_*/L_r$-colour relationships by assuming a fixed Salpeter IMF as the mass…
We present estimates of stellar population (SP) gradients from stacked spectra of slow (SR) and fast (FR) rotator elliptical galaxies from the MaNGA-DR15 survey. We find that: 1) FRs are $\sim 5$ Gyrs younger, more metal rich, less $α$-enhanced and smaller than SRs of the same luminosity $L_r$ and central velocity dispersion $σ_0$. This explains why when one combines SRs and FRs, objects which are small for their $L_r$ and $σ_0$ tend to be younger. Their SP gradients are also different. 2) Ignoring the FR/SR dichotomy leads one to conclude that compact galaxies are older than their larger coun…
The manner in which the stellar initial mass function (IMF) scales with global galaxy properties is under debate. We use two hydrodynamical, cosmological simulations to predict possible trends for two self-consistent variable IMF prescriptions that respectively become locally bottom-heavy or top-heavy in high-pressure environments. Both simulations have been calibrated to reproduce the observed correlation between central stellar velocity dispersion and the excess mass-to-light ratio (MLE) relative to a Salpeter IMF by increasing the mass fraction of, respectively, dwarf stars or stellar remna…
The gravitational potential well of an $M>10^{13}$ $M_\odot$ galaxy will lead to a gravitational redshift differential of order 1 km/s between the galaxy core and its outskirts. Current surveys of massive galaxies with spatially resolved spectroscopy have reached a size which makes feasible attempts to detect gravitational redshifts within galaxies. We use spectra from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) experiment to attempt a measurement of the averaged stellar redshift profile of large elliptical galaxies. We find that systematic effects (possibly related to char…
Integral field unit (IFU) spectra of face-on star-forming galaxies from the MaNGA survey are stacked in radial bins so as to reach a S/N high enough to measure emission lines and Lick indices out to 2.5-3 R_e. Two thirds of galaxies have stellar populations in the outer disks that are older, more metal poor and less dusty than in the inner disks. Recent bursts of star formation have occurred more frequently in the outer disk, but extinction-corrected Halpha equivalent widths are significantly lower at fixed D_n(4000) in these regions. I examine the properties of a subset of galaxies with the t…
Recent spatially-resolved observations of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) have uncovered evidence for radial gradients of the stellar initial mass function (IMF), ranging from super-Salpeter IMFs in the centre to Milky Way-like beyond the half-light radius, $r_e$. We compare these findings with our new cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations based on the EAGLE model that self-consistently vary the IMF on a per-particle basis such that it becomes either bottom-heavy (LoM-50) or top-heavy (HiM-50) in high-pressure environments. These simulations were calibrated to reproduce inferred IMF vari…
The SDSS-IV MaNGA survey has measured two-dimensional maps of emission line velocities for a statistically powerful sample of nearby galaxies. The asymmetric features of these kinematics maps reflect the non-rotational component of a galaxy's internal motion of ionized gas. In this study, we present a catalog of kinematic asymmetry measurement of $Hα$ velocity map of a sample of 5353 MaNGA galaxies. Based on this catalog, we find that `special' galaxies (e.g. merging galaxies, barred galaxies, and AGN host galaxies) contain more galaxies with highly asymmetric velocity maps. However, we notice…
The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We analyse the galaxies…
Over half of disk galaxies are barred, yet the mechanisms for bar formation and the life-time of bar buckling remain poorly understood. In simulations, a thin bar undergoes a rapid (<1 Gyr) event called "buckling," during which the inner part of the bar is asymmetrically bent out of the galaxy plane and eventually thickens, developing a peanut/X-shaped profile when viewed side-on. Through analyzing stellar kinematics of N-body model snapshots of a galaxy before, during, and after the buckling phase, we confirm a distinct quadrupolar pattern of out-of-plane stellar velocities in nearly face-on …
We measure the star formation histories (SFH) of a sample of low-mass galaxies with $M_\ast<10^9M_\odot$ from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. The large number of IFU spectra for each galaxy are either combined to reach a high signal to noise ratio or used to investigate spatial variations. We use Bayesian inferences based on full spectrum fitting. Our analysis based on Bayesian evidence ratio indicates a strong preferencefor a model that allows the presence of an old stellar population, and that an improper model for the SFH can significantly underestimate the old population in these galaxies. The a…
We present the MaNGA Dwarf galaxy, MaNDala, Value-Added-Catalog, VAC, from the final release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV program. MaNDala consists of 136 randomly selected bright dwarf galaxies with $M_{*}<10^{9.1}\odot$ and $M_{g}>-18.5$ making it the largest Integral Field Spectroscopy homogeneous sample of dwarf galaxies. We release a photometric analysis of the $g,r$ and $z$ broadband imaging based on the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys as well as the spectroscopic analysis based on the Pipe3D SDSS-IV VAC. Our release includes the surface brightness (SB), geometric parameters and color …
We determine the mass functions (MFs) and the dynamical parameters of 15 nearby open clusters (OCs) using the unprecedented data set of the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We select the members of each cluster by combining the photometric (colour and magnitude) and astrometric (parallax and proper motions) parameters of stars, minimizing the contamination from Galactic field interlopers. By comparing the observed distribution of stars along the cluster main sequence with the best-fitting synthetic population, we find the present-day MF and the binary fraction of the OCs, along with their dynamical …
MaNGA DynPop -- VI. Matter density slopes from dynamical models of 6000 galaxies versus cosmological simulations: the interplay between baryonic and dark matter
The complexity of constraining the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in early-type galaxies cannot be overstated, given the necessity of both very high signal-to-noise (S/N) data and the difficulty of breaking the strong degeneracies that occur among several stellar population parameters including age, metallicity and elemental abundances. With this paper, the second in a series, we present a detailed analysis of the biases that can occur when retrieving the IMF shape by exploiting both optical and NIR IMF sensitive spectral indices. As a test case, here we analyze data for the nearby galaxy…
We derive the mass weighted total density slopes within the effective (half-light) radius, $γ'$, for more than 2000 nearby galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey using Jeans-anisotropic-models applied to IFU observations. Our galaxies span a wide range of the stellar mass ($10^9$ $M_{\rm \odot}< M_* < 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) and the velocity dispersion (30 km/s $< σ_v <$ 300 km/s). We find that for galaxies with velocity dispersion $σ_v>100$ km/s, the density slope has a mean value $\langle γ^{\prime} \rangle = 2.24$ and a dispersion $σ_γ=0.22$, almost independent of velocity dispersion. A clear…
We analyse two-dimensional maps and radial profiles of EW(H$α$), EW(H$δ_A$), and D$_n$(4000) of low-redshift galaxies using integral field spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. Out of $\approx1400$ nearly face-on late-type galaxies with a redshift $z<0.05$, we identify 121 "turnover" galaxies that each have a central upturn in EW(H$α$), EW(H$δ_A$) and/or a central drop in D$_n$(4000), indicative of ongoing/recent star formation. The turnover features are found mostly in galaxies with a stellar mass above $\sim$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and NUV-$r$ colour less than $\approx5$. The majority of the tur…
Some ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have elevated observed dynamical V-band mass-to-light ($M/L_{\rm V}$) ratios with respect to what is expected from their stellar populations assuming a canonical initial mass function (IMF). Observations have also revealed the presence of a compact dark object in the centers of several UCDs, having a mass of a few to 15\% of the present-day stellar mass of the UCD. This central mass concentration has typically been interpreted as a super-massive black hole, but can in principle also be a sub-cluster of stellar remnants. We explore the following two form…
Mass measurements and absorption line studies indicate that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is bottom-heavy in the central regions of many early-type galaxies, with an excess of low mass stars compared to the IMF of the Milky Way. Here we test this hypothesis using a method that is independent of previous techniques. Low mass stars have strong chromospheric activity characterized by non-thermal emission at short wavelengths. Approximately half of the UV flux of M dwarfs is contained in the $λ1215.7$ Ly$α$ line, and we show that the total Ly$α$ emission of an early-type galaxy is a sens…
SDSS IV MaNGA: Characterizing Non-Axisymmetric Motions in Galaxy Velocity Fields Using the Radon Transform
