The Josephson equations predict remarkable effects concerning the phase state of a superconducting junction with an oscillating current induced by a static voltage. Whether the paradigm can be twisted by yielding an oscillating voltage without making use of harmonic drives is a fundamentally relevant problem yet not fully settled. Here, we demonstrate that a dynamical regime with an oscillating phase evolution is a general hallmark of driven Josephson systems exhibiting sign competition in the Josephson couplings. We show that in frustrated Josephson systems an oscillating phase dynamics gets switched on by driving the changeover among different ground states, which can be induced by varying the parameters that set the phase state. Remarkably, the character of the transitions in the Josephson phase space allows different types of dynamics, with few or several harmonics. This result sets out a characteristic mark of any superconducting system with frustrated Josephson couplings and can be exploited to disentangle the complexity of the underlying phases.
Within the formalism of Usadel equations the Josephson effect in dirty point contacts between single-band and three-band superconductors is investigated. The general expression for the Josephson current, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures, is obtained. We calculate current-phase relations for very low temperature and in the vicinity of the critical temperature. For three-band superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) point contacts undergo frustration phenomena with different current-phase relations, corresponding to ϕ-contacts. For three-band superconductors without BTR…
Phase coherence and vortex order in a Josephson-junction array at irrational frustration are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations using the parallel tempering method. A scaling analysis of the correlation length of phase variables in the full equilibrated system shows that the critical temperature vanishes with a power-law divergent correlation length and critical exponent $ν_{ph}$, in agreement with recent results from resistivity scaling analysis. A similar scaling analysis for vortex variables reveals a different critical exponent $ν_{v}$, suggesting that there are two distinct corr…
AC magnetoimpedance measurements performed on proximity-effect coupled Josephson junction arrays on a dice lattice reveal unconventional behaviour resulting from the interplay between the frustration f created by the applied magnetic field and the particular geometry of the system. While the inverse magnetoinductance exhibits prominent peaks at f=1/3 and at f=1/6 (and weaker structures at f=1/9,2/9,1/12,...) reflecting vortex states with a high degree of superconducting phase coherence, the deep minimum at f=1/2 points to a state in which the phase coherence is strongly suppressed. These obser…
To study the properties of frustrated two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays near incommensurability, we examine the current-voltage characteristics of a square proximity-coupled Josephson junction array at a sequence of frustrations f=3/8, 8/21, 0.382 $(\approx (3-\sqrt{5})/2)$, 2/5, and 5/12. Detailed scaling analyses of the current-voltage characteristics reveal approximately universal scaling behaviors for f=3/8, 8/21, 0.382, and 2/5. The approximately universal scaling behaviors and high superconducting transition temperatures indicate that both the nature of the superconducting transi…
We have studied the rationally frustrated Josephson-junction array model in the square lattice through Monte Carlo simulations of $(2+1)$D XY-model. For frustration $f=1/4$, the model at zero temperature shows a continuous superfluid-insulator transition. From the measurement of the correlation function and the superfluid stiffness, we obtain the dynamical critical exponent $z=1.0$ and the correlation length critical exponent $ν=0.4 \pm 0.05$. While the dynamical critical exponent is the same as that for cases $f=0$, 1/2, and 1/3, the correlation length critical exponent is surprisingly quite …
We study the energy spectrum for an aperiodic Josephson junction ladder, as a function of frustration. Frustration is brought about by application of a transverse magnetic field, and aperiodicity is imposed by the arrangement of plaquettes with two incommensurate areas. We study the effect of the incommensurate plaquette areas in conjunction with that of the aperiodicity. The structure of the energy spectrum at deep minima is shown to be described by a model that treats the plaquettes independently. The energy spectrum is a quasiperiodic function of frustration; short range correlations in the…
Using the path integral approach, we provide an explicit derivation of the equation for the phase boundary for quantum Josephson junction arrays with offset charges and non-diagonal capacitance matrix. For the model with nearest neighbor capacitance matrix and uniform offset charge $q/2e=1/2$, we determine, in the low critical temperature expansion, the most relevant contributions to the equation for the phase boundary. We explicitly construct the charge distributions on the lattice corresponding to the lowest energies. We find a reentrant behavior even with a short ranged interaction. A merit…
We use a driven Monte Carlo dynamics in the phase representation to determine the linear resistivity and current-voltage scaling of a two-dimensional Josephson-junction array at an irrational flux quantum per plaquette. The results are consistent with a phase-coherence transition scenario where the critical temperature vanishes. The linear resistivity is nonzero at any finite temperatures but nonlinear behavior sets in at a temperature-dependent crossover current determined by the thermal critical exponent. From a dynamic scaling analysis we determine this critical exponent and the thermally a…
The scaling behavior of the current-voltage ($IV$) characteristics of a two-dimensional proximity-coupled Josephson junction array (JJA) with quenched bond disorder was investigated for frustrations $f=1/5$, 1/3, 2/5, and 1/2. For all these frustrations including 1/5 and 2/5 where a strongly first-order phase transition is expected in the absence of disorder, the $IV$ characteristics exhibited a good scaling behavior. The critical exponent $ν$ indicates that bond disorder may drive the phase transitions of frustrated JJA's to be continuous but not into the Ising universality class, contrary to…
We present analytical and numerical studies of pinned superconducting states of open-ended Josephson ladder arrays, neglecting inductances but taking edge effects into account. Treating the edge effects perturbatively, we find analytical approximations for three of these superconducting states -- the no-vortex, fully-frustrated and single-vortex states -- as functions of the dc bias current $I$ and the frustration $f$. Bifurcation theory is used to derive formulas for the depinning currents and critical frustrations at which the superconducting states disappear or lose dynamical stability as $…
The s+- state in which order parameter has different signs in different bands is a leading candidate for the superconducting state in the iron based superconductors. We investigate a Josephson junction between s and s+- superconductors within microscopic theory. Frustration, caused by interaction of the s-wave gap parameter with the opposite-sign gaps of the s+- superconductor, leads to nontrivial phase diagram. When the partial Josephson coupling energy between the s-wave superconductor and one of the s+- bands dominates, s-wave gap parameter aligns with the order parameter in this band. In t…
We develop a model for high-Tc superconductors based on an electronic phase separation where low-and high-density domains are formed. At low temperatures this system may act as a granular superconductor forming an array of Josephson junctions. Cuprates are also known to have low superfluid densities and strong correlation effects. Both characteristics activate a negative Josephson coupling due to frustration that leads to spontaneous currents responsible for the weak ferromagnetic order. This original approach reproduces the observed onset of spontaneous magnetic signal and its dependence on t…
We present low temperature transport measurements in one dimensional Josephson junctions rhombi chains. We have measured the current phase relation of a chain of 8 rhombi. The junctions are either in the classical phase regime with the Josephson energy much larger than the charging energy, $E_{J}\gg E_{C}$, or in the quantum phase regime where $E_{J}/E_{C}\approx 2$. In the strong Josephson coupling regime ($E_{J}\gg E_{C} \gg k_{B}T$) we observe a sawtooth-like supercurrent as a function of the phase difference over the chain. The period of the supercurrent oscillations changes abruptly from …
We study theoretically the two Kitaev chains put in parallel, i.e., Kitaev ladder, coupled by Josephson junction. The $π$-junction between the Majorana bound states at the ends of the chains competes with the usual Josephson coupling along the chain, and this frustration leads to the modulation of the phase difference of the superconducting order parameter between the two chains. We show that this modulation gives the double degeneracy of the ground states, which can be manipulated by external electric and magnetic fields.
Fully frustrated one-dimensional diamond Josephson chains have been shown [B. Douçot and J. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 227005 (2002)] to posses a remarkable property: The superfluid phase occurs through the condensation of pairs of Cooper pairs. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we analyze quantitatively the Insulator to $4e$-Superfluid transition. We determine the location of the critical point and discuss the behaviour of the phase-phase correlators. For comparison we also present the case of a diamond chain at zero and 1/3 frustration where the standard $2e$-condensation is observe…
We have constructed a new type of amplifier whose primary purpose is the readout of superconducting quantum bits. It is based on the transition of an RF-driven Josephson junction between two distinct oscillation states near a dynamical bifurcation point. The main advantages of this new amplifier are speed, high-sensitivity, low back-action, and the absence of on-chip dissipation. Pulsed microwave reflection measurements on nanofabricated Al junctions show that actual devices attain the performance predicted by theory.
The phase and thermal driven transport properties of the T-shaped uncorrelated double quantum dot Josephson junction are analyzed by using Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function equation of motion technique. In this setup, we have shown that the side-attached quantum dot provides an additional route for electron transmission which is affecting the transport properties by adjusting the interdot hopping between the main dot and the side dot. We began with investigating the impact of interdot hopping on Andreev bound states and Josephson supercurrent. When a small thermal bias is applied across…
Transport measurements are carried out on dice Josephson-junction arrays with the frustration index $f=1/3$ and 1/2 which possess, within the limit of the $XY$ model, an accidental degeneracy of the ground states as a consequence of the formation of zero-energy domain walls. The measurements demonstrate that both the systems undergo a phase transition to a superconducting vortex-ordered state at considerably high temperatures. The experimental findings are in apparent contradiction with the theoretical expectation that frustration effects in the $f=1/3$ system are particularly strong enough to…
We have measured the influence of shot noise on hysteretic Josephson junctions initially in macroscopic quantum tunnelling (MQT) regime. Escape threshold current into the resistive state decreases monotonically with increasing average current through the scattering conductor, which is another tunnel junction. Escape is predominantly determined by excitation due to the wide-band shot noise. This process is equivalent to thermal activation (TA) over the barrier at temperatures up to about four times above the critical temperature of the superconductor. The presented TA model is in excellent agre…
We theoretically study spin current through ferromagnet (F) in a Josephson junction composed of s-wave superconductors and two layers of ferromagnets. Using quasiclassical theory, we show that the long-range spin current can be driven by the superconducting phase difference without voltage drop. The origin of this spin current is due to spin-triplet Cooper pairs (STCs) formed by electrons of equal-spin, which are induced by proximity effect inside the F. We find that the spin current carried by the STCs exhibits long-range propagation in the F even where the Josephson charge current is practic…
We discuss how phase coherence manifests in the heat transport through superconducting single and multichannel Josephson junctions in time dependent situations. We consider the heat current driven through the junction by a temperature difference in dc voltage and ac phase biased situations. At low bias, the electromagnetic driving mainly modifies the form of the coherent resonance that transports a large part of the heat current, rather than simply dissipating energy in the junction. We find a description for the heat current in terms of quasiparticle n-photon absorption and emission rates, an…
We consider a long Josephson junction excited by a suitable external ac-signal, in order to generate control and detect breathers. Studying the nonlinear supratransmission phenomenon in a nonlinear sine-Gordon chain sinusoidally driven, Geniet and Leon explored the bifurcation of the energy transmitted into the chain and calculated a threshold $A (ω)$ for the external driving signal amplitude, at which the energy flows into the system by breathers modes. I numerically study the continuous sine-Gordon model, describing the dynamics of the phase difference in a long Josephson junction, in order …
Motivated by recent experiments, where a voltage biased Josephson junction is placed in series with a resonator, the classical dynamics of the circuit is studied in various domains of parameter space. This problem can be mapped onto the dissipative motion of a single degree of freedom in a nonlinear time-dependent potential, where in contrast to conventional settings the nonlinearity appears in the driving while the static potential is purely harmonic. For long times the system approaches steady states which are analyzed in the underdamped regime over the full range of driving parameters inclu…
The nature of decoupling in the mixed phase of extremely type-II layered superconductors is studied theoretically through a duality transformation of the layered XY model with frustration. In the limit of weak coupling, we generally find that the Josephson effect is absent if and only if the phase correlations within isolated layers are short range. In the case specific to uniform frustration, we notably identify a decoupled pancake vortex liquid phase that is bounded by first-order and second-order decoupling lines in the magnetic field vs. temperature plane. These transitions potentially acc…
We carry out extensive Monte Carlo simulations on the Coulomb gas dual to the uniformly frustrated two dimensional XY model, for a sequence of frustrations f converging to the irraltional (3-sqrt 5)/2. We find in these systems a sharp first order equilibrium phase transition to an ordered vortex structure at a T_c which varies only slightly with f. This ordered vortex structure remains in general phase incoherent until a lower pinning transition T_p(f) that varies with f. We argue that the glassy behaviors reported for this model in earlier simulations are dynamic effects.
We propose a protocol to locally detect the Berry curvature of a three terminal Josephson junction with a quantum dot based on a synchronic detection when an AC modulation is applied in the device. This local gauge invariant quantity is expressed in terms of the instantaneous Green function of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We analyze the contribution to the Berry curvature from both the quasi-particle excitations and the Andreev bound state levels by introducing an effective low-energy model. In addition, we propose to induce topological properties in the junction by breaking time-reve…
Periodically driven Kitaev chains are known to exhibit novel Floquet Majorana fermions and anomalous Floquet end modes. The fact that `quasienergy in Floquet systems is periodic' poses a difficulty in defining the ground state in periodically driven systems. To overcome this problem, we start with the ground state of the undriven Kitaev chain and gradually switch on the periodic driving in chemical potential over a timescale $τ$. The extent to which the single particle eigenstates of the undriven system get distributed among the Floquet states upon driving can be characterized by inverse parti…
We theoretically study the Josephson effect in a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor ({\it S}/{\it N}/{\it S}) Josephson junction composed of $s$-wave {\it S}s with {\it N} which is sandwiched by two ferromagnetic insulators ({\it F}s), forming a spin valve, in the vertical direction of the junction. We show that the 0-$π$ transition of the Josephson critical current occurs with increasing the thickness of {\it N} along the junction. This transition is due to the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) which induces ferromagnetic magnetization in the {\it N}. Moreover, we find that, even for fi…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction {in the short limit}. Owing to the proximity effect, such a junction constitutes a thermodynamic system where {phase difference}, supercurrent, temperature and entropy are thermodynamical variables connected by equations of state. These allow conceiving quasi-static processes that we characterize in terms of heat and work exchanged. Finally, we combine such processes to construct a Josephson-based Otto and Stirling cycles. We study the related performance in both engine and refrigerator ope…
The Josephson effect is a fundamental quantum phenomenon consisting in the appearance of a dissipationless supercurrent in a weak link between two superconducting (S) electrodes. While the mechanism leading to the Josephson effect is quite general, i.e., Andreev reflections at the interface between the S electrodes and the weak link, the precise physical details and topology of the junction drastically modify the properties of the supercurrent. Specifically, a strong enhancement of the critical supercurrent $I_C$ is expected to occur when the topology of the junction allows the emergence of Ma…
We report single-shot readout of a superconducting flux qubit by using a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA). After optimizing the readout power, gain of the JPA and timing of the data acquisition, we observe the Rabi oscillations with a contrast of 74% which is mainly limited by the bandwidth of the JPA and the energy relaxation of the qubit. The observation of quantum jumps between the qubit eigenstates under continuous monitoring indicates the nondestructiveness of the readout scheme.
We study the effect of an externally imposed rotation or magnetic field on frustrated multiband superconductors/superfluids. The frustration originates with multiple superconducting bands crossing the Fermi surface in conjunction with interband Josephson-couplings with a positive sign. These couplings tend to frustrate the phases of the various components of the superconducting order parameter. This in turn leads to an effective description in terms of a $\groupUZ$-symmetric system, where essentially only the $\groupU$-sector couples to the gauge-field representing the rotation or magnetic fie…
In this Letter we study the phase diagram and the approach to the equilibrium of Josephson junction arrays on a dice lattice for two different values of the magnetic frustration ($f=1/2,1/3$). In both cases the array unedrgoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless like phase transition. For the fully frustrated array, $f=1/2$, we find evidence of a {\em glassy behavior} although the system has {\em no disorder}. For comparison we study dynamics of the array at a different value of frustration ($f=1/3$) and find no trace of glassy dynamics.
We propose a mechanism of coherent emission from driven vortices in stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions. In contrast to super-radiance, which occurs only for highly ordered vortex lattices, we predict resonant radiation emission from weakly correlated vortex arrays. Our analytical results for the THz wave intensity, resonance frequencies, and the dependence of THz emission power on dissipation are in good agreement with the ones obtained by recent simulations.
The hydrodynamical phase-slippage geometry and a semi-classical Josephson-RCSJ formulism are combined to make an analogy between the periodically driven Josephson ac effect and the quantum Hall effect. Both of these two macroscopic quantum effects are postulated to be originated from the one-dimensional linear vortex-electron relative motion. The mechanisms of the quantized Hall resistance of IQHE and FQHE are unified under the phase-locking dynamics of a Josephson-like oscillation which is periodically driven by the electron wave of the coherent Hall current, with the time-averaged frequency …
Extended Josephson junction driven by dc bias current is studied numerically. Two types of solutions, symmetrical and asymmetrical, are found. The current-voltage characteristic (IVC) is calculated. The symmetrical solutions form main histeretic IVC and asymmetrical one create an additional branch. Depending on the bias current value periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic modes of the junction motion was observed. Dynamics of the junction affected by thermal fluctuations was analyzed. Stability of different states of the junction is discussed.
A Josephson junction embedded in a dissipative circuit can be externally driven to induce nonlinear dynamics of its phase. Classically, under sufficiently strong driving and weak damping, dynamic multi-stability emerges associated with dynamical bifurcations so that the often used modeling as a Duffing oscillator, which can exhibit bi-stability at the most, is insufficient. The present work analyzes in this regime corresponding quantum properties by mapping the problem onto a highly-nonlinear quasi-energy operator in a rotating frame. This allows us to identify in detail parameter regions wher…
We find that a temperature differential can drive superfluid oscillations in 4He. The oscillations are excited by a heater which causes a time dependent temperature differential across an array of 70nm apertures. By measuring the oscillation frequency and simultaneously determining both temperature and pressure differentials we prove the validity of the most general form of the Josephson frequency relation. These observations were made near saturated vapor pressure, within a few mK of the superfluid transition temperature.
A quantum mechanical analysis of the Josephson phase escape in the presence of both dc and ac bias currents is presented. We find that the potential barrier for the escape of the phase is effectively suppressed as the resonant condition occurs, i.e. when the frequency $ω$ of the ac bias matches the Josephson junction energy level separation. This effect manifests itself by a pronounced drop in the dependence of the switching current $I_s$ on the power $W$ of the applied microwave radiation and by a peculiar double-peak structure in the switching current distribution $P(I_s)$. The developed the…
Motivated by recent pump-probe experiments indicating enhanced coherent $c$-axis transport in underdoped YBCO, we study Josephson junctions periodically driven by optical pulses. We propose a mechanism for this observation by demonstrating that a parametrically driven Josephson junction shows an enhanced imaginary part of the low-frequency conductivity when the driving frequency is above the plasma frequency, implying an effectively enhanced Josephson coupling. We generalize this analysis to a bilayer system of Josephson junctions modeling YBCO. Again, the Josephson coupling is enhanced when t…
We performed a novel phase sensitive microwave reflection experiment which directly probes the dynamics of the Josephson plasma resonance in both the linear and non-linear regime. When the junction was driven below the plasma frequency into the non-linear regime, we observed for the first time the transition between two different dynamical states predicted for non-linear systems. In our experiment, this transition appears as an abrupt change in the reflected signal phase at a critical excitation power.
In order to mimic the phase changes in the primordial Big Bang, several "cosmological" solid-state experiments have been conceived, during the last decade, to investigate the spontaneous symmetry breaking in superconductors and superfluids cooled through their transition temperature. In one of such experiments the number of magnetic flux quanta spontaneously trapped in a superconducting loop was measured by means of a long Josephson tunnel junction built on top of the loop itself. We have analyzed this system and found a number of interesting features not occurring in the conventional case wit…
We present experimental results on a Josephson parametric amplifier tailored for readout of ultra-sensitive thermal microwave detectors. In particular, we discuss the impact of fabrication details on the performance. We show that the small volume of deposited dielectric materials enabled by the side-wall passivated spacer niobium junction technology leads to robust operation across a wide range of operating temperatures up to 1.5 K. The flux-pumped amplifier has gain in excess of 20 dB in three-wave mixing and its center frequency is tunable between 540 MHz and 640 MHz. At 600 MHz, the amplifi…
We discuss thermal transport through a Josephson junction in a time-dependent situation. We write the spectral representation of the heat current pumped by a generic drive. This enables separation of the dissipative and reactive contributions, of which the latter do not contribute to long-time averages. We discuss the physical interpretation, and note that the condensate heat current identified in [K. Maki and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 15, 921 (1965)] is purely reactive. The results enable a convenient description of heat exchanges in a Josephson system in the presence of an external drive,…
Examination of an annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions in the presence of external radiation showed that the ability of the system to lock with some external radiation was determined not only by the number but also by the type of rotating excitations (fluxons or antifluxons). Shapiro steps can be observed in the current-voltage characteristics only in the system with trapped fluxons or in the system with fluxon-antifluxon pairs. If the trapped fluxons circulate simultaneously with fluxon-antifluxon pairs, there are no Shapiro steps regardless of the amplitude or frequency of the a…
We classify ground states and normal modes for $n$-component superconductors with frustrated intercomponent Josephson couplings, focusing on $n = 4$. The results should be relevant not only to multiband superconductors, but also to Josephson-coupled multilayers and Josephson-junction arrays. It was recently discussed that three-component superconductors can break time-reversal symmetry as a consequence of phase frustration. We discuss how to classify frustrated superconductors with an arbitrary number of components. Although already for the four-component case there are a large number of diffe…
We have studied the magnetic-field-driven quantum phase transitions in Josephson junction arrays with a large coordination number. The characteristic energies were extracted in both the superconducting and insulating phases by integrating the current-voltage characteristics over a voltage range 2eV\leqk_B T. For the arrays with a relatively strong Josephson coupling, we observed duality between the energies in the superconducting and insulating phases. The arrays with a weaker Josephson coupling demonstrate an intermediate, "bad metal" regime in weak magnetic fields; this observation underline…
