We study the non-trivial phase of the two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice, displaying both edge and corner modes. The corner localized modes of a two-dimensional flake were initially identified as a signature of a higher-order topological phase but later shown to be trivial for perturbations that were thought to protect them. Using various theoretical and simulation techniques, we confirm that it does not display higher-order topology: the corner modes are of trivial nature. Nevertheless, they might be protected. First, we show a set of perturbations within a tight-binding model that can move the corner modes away from zero energy, also repeat some perturbations that were used to show that the modes are trivial. In addition, we analyze the protection of the corner modes in more detail and find that only perturbations respecting the sublattice or generalized chiral and crystalline symmetries, and the lattice connectivity, pin the corner modes to zero energy robustly. A destructive interference model corroborates the results. Finally, we analyze a muffin-tin model for the bulk breathing kagome lattice. Using topological and symmetry markers, such as Wilson loops and Topological Quantum Chemistry, we identify the two breathing phases as adiabatically disconnected different obstructed atomic limits.
We propose a realization of higher-order topological phases in a spring-mass model with a breathing kagome structure. To demonstrate the existence of the higher-order topological phases, we characterize the topological properties and show that the corner states appear under the fixed boundary condition. To characterize the topological properties, we introduce a formula for the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phases in the Brillouin zone. From the numerical result of this $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phase, we have elucidated that coupling between the longitudinal and transverse modes yields a state characterized…
Electric circuits are known to realize topological quadrupole insulators. We explore electric circuits made of capacitors and inductors forming the breathing Kagome and pyrochlore lattices. They are known to possess three phases (trivial insulator, higher-order topological insulator and metallic phases) in the tight-binding model. The topological phase is characterized by the emergence of zero-energy corner states. A topological phase transition is induced by tuning continuously the capacitance, which is possible by using variable capacitors. It is found that the two-point impedance yields hug…
A Kagome lattice, formed by triangles of two different directions, is known to have many emergent quantum phenomena. Under the breathing anisotropy of bond strengths, this lattice can become a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI), which hosts topologically protected corner states. Experimental realizations of HOTI on breathing Kagome lattices have been reported for various artificial systems, but not for simple natural materials with an electronic breathing Kagome lattice. Here we prove that a breathing Kagome lattice and HOTI are hidden inside the electronic structure of hexagonal transi…
Kagome materials have become solid grounds to study the interplay among geometry, topology, correlation, and magnetism. Recently, semiconductors Nb3X8(X = Cl, Br, I) have been predicted to be two-dimensional (2D) magnets and importantly these materials possess breathing kagome geometry. Electronic structure study of these promising materials is still lacking. Here, we report the spectroscopic evidence of at and weakly dispersing bands in breathing-kagome semiconductor Nb3I8 around 500 meV binding energy, which is well supported by our first-principles calculations. These bands originate from t…
A second-order topological insulator in $d$ dimensions is an insulator which has no $d-1$ dimensional topological boundary states but has $d-2$ dimensional topological boundary states. It is an extended notion of the conventional topological insulator. Higher-order topological insulators have been investigated in square and cubic lattices. In this paper, we generalize them to breathing Kagome and pyrochlore lattices. First, we construct a second-order topological insulator on the breathing Kagome lattice. Three topological boundary states emerge at the corner of the triangle, realizing a 1/3 f…
We theoretically study the topological properties of the tight-binding model on the breathing kagome lattice with antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between nearest neighbors. We show that the system hosts nontrivial topological phases even without second-nearest-neighbor hopping, and that the weakly dispersing band of the kagome lattice can become topological. The main results are presented in the form of phase diagrams, where the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological index is shown as a function of SOC (intrinsically allowed and Rashba) and lattice trimerization. In addition, exact diagonalization…
High-order topological insulators (TIs) are a family of recently-predicted topological phases of matter obeying an extended topological bulk-boundary correspondence principle. For example, a two-dimensional (2D) second-order TI does not exhibit gapless one-dimensional (1D) topological edge states, like a standard 2D TI, but instead has topologically-protected zero-dimensional (0D) corner states. So far, higher-order TIs have been demonstrated only in classical mechanical and electromagnetic metamaterials exhibiting quantized quadrupole polarization. Here, we experimentally realize a second-ord…
We show that unconventional boundary phenomena occur in the $3Q$ charge bond orders on the hexagonal lattices. At the Van Hove singularity with three nesting momenta, $3Q$ orders can trigger a $\text{C}_6$-symmetric insulator under bond modulations. On the kagome lattice, in-gap corner states appear in the energy spectrum and carry fractional corner charge $-2e/3$. Such corner phenomena originate from the corner filling anomaly and indicate a higher-order topological insulator. The in-gap corner states are also observed on the triangular lattice. The honeycomb lattice does not support fraction…
A higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in two dimensions is an insulator without metallic edge states but with robust zero-dimensional topological boundary modes localized at its corners. Yet, these corner modes do not carry a clear signature of their topology as they lack the anomalous nature of helical or chiral boundary states. Here, we demonstrate using immunity tests that the corner modes found in the breathing kagome lattice represent a prime example of a mistaken identity. Contrary to previous theoretical and experimental claims, we show that these corner modes are inherently fragi…
Quantum spin liquids hosting Majorana excitations have recently experienced renewed interest for potential applications to topological quantum computation. Performing logical operations with reduced poisoning requires to localize such quasiparticles at specific point of the system, with energies that are well defined and inside the bulk energy gap. These are two defining features of second order topological insulators (SOTIs). Here, we show two spin models that support quantum spin liquid phases characterised by Majorana excitations and that behave as SOTIs, one of which is analytically solvab…
In this paper, we theoretically study the Floquet engineering of two dimensional photonic waveguide arrays in three types of lattices: honeycomb lattice with Kekule distortion, breathing square lattice and breathing Kagome lattice. The Kekule distortion factor or the breathing factor in the corresponding lattice is periodically changed along the axial direction of the photonic waveguide with frequency $ω$. Within certain ranges of $ω$, the Floquet corner states in the Floquet band gap of quasi-energy spectrum are found, which are localized at the corner of the finite two-dimensional arrays. Du…
We study the topological phase in dipolar-coupled two-dimensional breathing square lattice of magnetic vortices. By evaluating the quantized Chern number and $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ Berry phase, we obtain the phase diagram and identify that the second-order topological corner states appear only when the ratio of alternating bond lengths goes beyond a critical value. Interestingly, we uncover three corner states at different frequencies ranging from sub GHz to tens of GHz by solving the generalized Thiele's equation, which has no counterpart in condensed matter system. We show that the emerging corner…
A kagome lattice is composed of corner-sharing triangles arranged on a honeycomb lattice such that each honeycomb bond hosts a kagome site while each kagome triangle encloses a honeycomb site. Such close relation implies that the two lattices share common features. We predict here that a kagome crystal, similar to the honeycomb lattice graphene, reacts to elastic strain in a unique way that the bulk electronic states in the vicinity of Dirac points are reorganized by the strain-induced pseudomagnetic field into flat Landau levels, while the degenerate edge states in the undeformed crystal beco…
Quantum simulators are an essential tool for understanding complex quantum materials. Platforms based on ultracold atoms in optical lattices and photonic devices led the field so far, but electronic quantum simulators are proving to be equally relevant. Simulating topological states of matter is one of the holy grails in the field. Here, we experimentally realize a higher-order electronic topological insulator (HOTI). Specifically, we create a dimerized Kagome lattice by manipulating carbon-monoxide (CO) molecules on a Cu(111) surface using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). We engineer al…
We study the topological properties of a kagome plasmonic metasurface, modelled with a coupled dipole method which naturally includes retarded long range interactions. We demonstrate the system supports an obstructed atomic limit phase through the calculation of Wilson loops. Then we characterise the hierarchy of topological boundary modes hosted by the subwavelength array of plasmonic nanoparticles: both one-dimensional edge modes as well as zero-dimensional corner modes. We determine the properties of these modes which robustly confine light at subwavelength scales, calculate the local densi…
Parafermions are a natural generalization of Majorana fermions. We consider a breathing Kagome lattice with complex hoppings by imposing $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ clock symmetry in the complex energy plane. It is a non-Hermitian generalization of the second-order topological insulator characterized by the emergence of topological corner states. We demonstrate that the topological corner states are parafermions in the present $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ clock-symmetric model. It is also shown that the model is realized in electric circuits properly designed, where the parafermion corner states are observed by impe…
We study characteristic band structures of the fermions on a square kagome lattice, one of the two-dimensional lattices hosting a corner-sharing network of triangles. We show that the band structures of the nearest-neighbor tight-binding model exhibit many characteristic features, including a flat band which is ubiquitous among frustrated lattices. On the flat band, we elucidate its origin by using the molecular-orbital representation and also find localized exact eigenstates called compact localized states. In addition to the flat band, we also find two spin-1 Dirac cones with different energ…
We discuss a pairing mechanism in interacting two-dimensional multipartite lattices that intrinsically leads to a second order topological superconducting state with a spatially modulated gap. When the chemical potential is close to Dirac points, oppositely moving electrons on the Fermi surface undergo an interference phenomenon in which the Berry phase converts a repulsive electron-electron interaction into an effective attraction. The topology of the superconducting phase manifests as gapped edge modes in the quasiparticle spectrum and Majorana Kramers pairs at the corners. We present symmet…
We present a simple group theory explanation of the fact that the energy bands merge in the corners of the Brillouin zone for graphene and for two particular cases of Kagome lattice for arbitrary tight--binding Hamiltonian. We connect the linearity of the spectrum in the vicinity of these points for monolayer graphene, bilayer graphene for AA stacking and Kagome lattice with the properties of the conical points of the surface, known from geometry.
Long-range interactions (LRIs) are ubiquitous in nature. Higher-order topological (HOT) insulator represents a new phase of matter. A critical issue is how LRI dictates the HOT phases. In this work, we discover four topologically distinct phases, i.e., HOT phase, the bound state in the continuum, Dirac semimetal (DSM) phase, and trivial insulator phase in a breathing kagome circuit with tunable LRIs. We find an emerging type-III corner state in the HOT phase, which splits from the edge state continuum and originates from the strong couplings between nodes at different edges. We experimentally …
A Quantum Spin-Hall Insulator (QSHI) is implemented into a simple mass-spring Kagome lattice. The transition from the trivial state to the topological one is described by an invariant Chern number function of a contrast parameter. The band diagram and helical edge states characteristic of QSHI are obtained by a combination of numerical and analytical methods. In particular, these states are shown to be Stoneley wave solutions to a set of asymptotic continuous motion equations. Last, scatterless propagation of polarized topological edge waves around sharp corners is demonstrated and robustness …
The recent discovery of higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) has significantly extended our understanding of topological phases of matter. Here, we predict that second-order corner states can emerge in the dipolar-coupled dynamics of topological spin textures in two-dimensional artificial crystals. Taking a breathing honeycomb lattice of magnetic vortices as an example, we derive the full phase diagram of collective vortex gyrations and identify three types of corner states that have not been discovered before. We show that the topological "zero-energy" corner modes are protected by a g…
Pursuing topological phase and matter in a variety of systems is one central issue in current physical sciences and engineering. Motivated by the recent experimental observation of corner states in acoustic and photonic structures, we theoretically study the dipolar-coupled gyration motion of magnetic solitons on the two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice. We calculate the phase diagram and predict both the Tamm-Shockley edge modes and the second-order corner states when the ratio between alternate lattice constants is greater than a critical value. We show that the emerging corner states ar…
We analyze the robustness of corner modes in topological photonic crystals, taking a $C_6$-symmetric breathing honeycomb photonic crystal as an example. First, we employ topological quantum chemistry and Wilson loop calculations to demonstrate that the topological properties of the bulk crystal stem from an obstructed atomic limit phase. We then characterize the topological corner modes emerging within the gapped edge modes employing a semi-analytical model, determining the appropriate real space topological invariants. For the first time, we provide a detailed account of the effect of long-ra…
Bulk-boundary correspondence has achieved a great success in the identification of topological states. However, this elegant strategy doesn't apply to the Dirac semimetals (DSMs). Here, we propose that kagome lattices Pd$_3$Pb$_2$X$_2$ (X = S, Se) are unique type-I DSMs without surface Fermi arc states, which are different from the previous well-known DSMs, such as Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$. Pd$_3$Pb$_2$X$_2$ are characterized by nontrivial topological invariant Z$_3$, guaranteeing a higher-order bulk-hinge correspondence and the existence of higher-order Fermi arcs, as well as fractional corn…
We devise a generic recipe for constructing $D$-dimensional lattice models whose $d$-dimensional boundary states, located on surfaces, hinges, corners, and so forth, can be obtained exactly. The solvability is rooted in the underlying lattice structure and as such does not depend on fine tuning, allowing us to track their evolution throughout various phases and across phase transitions. Most saliently, our models provide "boundary solvable" examples of the recently introduced higher-order topological phases. We apply our general approach to breathing and anisotropic kagome and pyrochlore latti…
Square-root topological insulators are recently-proposed intriguing topological insulators, where the topologically nontrivial nature of Bloch wave functions is inherited from the square of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we propose that higher-order topological insulators can also have their square-root descendants, which we term square-root higher-order topological insulators. There, emergence of in-gap corner states is inherited from the squared Hamiltonian which hosts higher-order topology. As an example of such systems, we investigate the tight-binding model on a decorated honeycomb latti…
Recent acoustic and electrical-circuit experiments have reported the third-order (or octupole) topological insulating phase, while its counterpart in classical magnetic systems is yet to be realized. Here we explore the collective dynamics of magnetic vortices in three-dimensional breathing cuboids, and find that the vortex lattice can support zero-dimensional corner states, one-dimensional hinge states, two-dimensional surface states, and three-dimensional bulk states, when the ratio of alternating intralayer and interlayer bond lengths goes beyond a critical value. We show that only the corn…
Square-root higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) are recently discovered new topological phases, with intriguing topological properties inherited from a parent lattice Hamiltonian. Different from conventional HOTIs, the square-root HOTIs typically manifest two paired non-zero energy corner states. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the second-order square-root HOTIs in photonics for the first time to our knowledge, thereby unveiling such distinct corner states. The specific platform is a laser-written decorated honeycomb lattice (HCL), for which the squared Hamiltonian represen…
