This paper introduces Opencpop, a publicly available high-quality Mandarin singing corpus designed for singing voice synthesis (SVS). The corpus consists of 100 popular Mandarin songs performed by a female professional singer. Audio files are recorded with studio quality at a sampling rate of 44,100 Hz and the corresponding lyrics and musical scores are provided. All singing recordings have been phonetically annotated with phoneme boundaries and syllable (note) boundaries. To demonstrate the reliability of the released data and to provide a baseline for future research, we built baseline deep neural network-based SVS models and evaluated them with both objective metrics and subjective mean opinion score (MOS) measure. Experimental results show that the best SVS model trained on our database achieves 3.70 MOS, indicating the reliability of the provided corpus. Opencpop is released to the open-source community WeNet, and the corpus, as well as synthesized demos, can be found on the project homepage.

Thanks to developments in machine learning techniques, it has become possible to synthesize high-quality singing voices of a single singer. An open multispeaker singing-voice corpus would further accelerate the research in singing-voice synthesis. However, conventional singing-voice corpora only consist of the singing voices of a single singer. We designed a Japanese multispeaker singing-voice corpus called "JVS-MuSiC" with the aim to analyze and synthesize a variety of voices. The corpus consists of 100 singers' recordings of the same song, Katatsumuri, which is a Japanese children's song. It…
We present a database of parallel recordings of speech and singing, collected and released by the Human Language Technology (HLT) laboratory at the National University of Singapore (NUS), that is called NUS-HLT Speak-Sing (NHSS) database. We release this database to the public to support research activities, that include, but not limited to comparative studies of acoustic attributes of speech and singing signals, cooperative synthesis of speech and singing voices, and speech-to-singing conversion. This database consists of recordings of sung vocals of English pop songs, the spoken counterpart …
We are interested in a novel task, singing voice beautifying (SVB). Given the singing voice of an amateur singer, SVB aims to improve the intonation and vocal tone of the voice, while keeping the content and vocal timbre. Current automatic pitch correction techniques are immature, and most of them are restricted to intonation but ignore the overall aesthetic quality. Hence, we introduce Neural Singing Voice Beautifier (NSVB), the first generative model to solve the SVB task, which adopts a conditional variational autoencoder as the backbone and learns the latent representations of vocal tone. …
In this paper, we focus on singing techniques within the scope of music information retrieval research. We investigate how singers use singing techniques using real-world recordings of famous solo singers in Japanese popular music songs (J-POP). First, we built a new dataset of singing techniques. The dataset consists of 168 commercial J-POP songs, and each song is annotated using various singing techniques with timestamps and vocal pitch contours. We also present descriptive statistics of singing techniques on the dataset to clarify what and how often singing techniques appear. We further exp…
End-to-end singing voice synthesis (SVS) model VISinger can achieve better performance than the typical two-stage model with fewer parameters. However, VISinger has several problems: text-to-phase problem, the end-to-end model learns the meaningless mapping of text-to-phase; glitches problem, the harmonic components corresponding to the periodic signal of the voiced segment occurs a sudden change with audible artefacts; low sampling rate, the sampling rate of 24KHz does not meet the application needs of high-fidelity generation with the full-band rate (44.1KHz or higher). In this paper, we pro…

Singing voice detection (SVD), to recognize vocal parts in the song, is an essential task in music information retrieval (MIR). The task remains challenging since singing voice varies and intertwines with the accompaniment music, especially for some complicated polyphonic music such as choral music recordings. To address this problem, we investigate singing voice detection while discarding the interference from the accompaniment. The proposed SVD has two steps: i. The singing voice separation (SVS) technique is first utilized to filter out the singing voice's potential part coarsely. ii. Upon …
In this paper, a text-to-rapping/singing system is introduced, which can be adapted to any speaker's voice. It utilizes a Tacotron-based multispeaker acoustic model trained on read-only speech data and which provides prosody control at the phoneme level. Dataset augmentation and additional prosody manipulation based on traditional DSP algorithms are also investigated. The neural TTS model is fine-tuned to an unseen speaker's limited recordings, allowing rapping/singing synthesis with the target's speaker voice. The detailed pipeline of the system is described, which includes the extraction of …
This paper aims to introduce a robust singing voice synthesis (SVS) system to produce very natural and realistic singing voices efficiently by leveraging the adversarial training strategy. On one hand, we designed simple but generic random area conditional discriminators to help supervise the acoustic model, which can effectively avoid the over-smoothed spectrogram prediction and improve the expressiveness of SVS. On the other hand, we subtly combined the spectrogram with the frame-level linearly-interpolated F0 sequence as the input for the neural vocoder, which is then optimized with the hel…

Separating a song into vocal and accompaniment components is an active research topic, and recent years witnessed an increased performance from supervised training using deep learning techniques. We propose to apply the visual information corresponding to the singers' vocal activities to further improve the quality of the separated vocal signals. The video frontend model takes the input of mouth movement and fuses it into the feature embeddings of an audio-based separation framework. To facilitate the network to learn audiovisual correlation of singing activities, we add extra vocal signals ir…
Machine learning based singing voice models require large datasets and lengthy training times. In this work we present a lightweight architecture, based on the Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) library, that is able to output song-like utterances conditioned only on pitch and amplitude, after twelve hours of training using small datasets of unprocessed audio. The results are promising, as both the melody and the singer's voice are recognizable. In addition, we present two zero-configuration tools to train new models and experiment with them. Currently we are exploring the latent …
We present UTACO, a singing synthesis model based on an attention-based sequence-to-sequence mechanism and a vocoder based on dilated causal convolutions. These two classes of models have significantly affected the field of text-to-speech, but have never been thoroughly applied to the task of singing synthesis. UTACO demonstrates that attention can be successfully applied to the singing synthesis field and improves naturalness over the state of the art. The system requires considerably less explicit modelling of voice features such as F0 patterns, vibratos, and note and phoneme durations, than…
In this paper, we propose a novel neural network model called KaraSinger for a less-studied singing voice synthesis (SVS) task named score-free SVS, in which the prosody and melody are spontaneously decided by machine. KaraSinger comprises a vector-quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) that compresses the Mel-spectrograms of singing audio to sequences of discrete codes, and a language model (LM) that learns to predict the discrete codes given the corresponding lyrics. For the VQ-VAE part, we employ a Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss to encourage the discrete codes to carry…
We present a novel framework for generating pop music. Our model is a hierarchical Recurrent Neural Network, where the layers and the structure of the hierarchy encode our prior knowledge about how pop music is composed. In particular, the bottom layers generate the melody, while the higher levels produce the drums and chords. We conduct several human studies that show strong preference of our generated music over that produced by the recent method by Google. We additionally show two applications of our framework: neural dancing and karaoke, as well as neural story singing.

Separating a singing voice from its music accompaniment remains an important challenge in the field of music information retrieval. We present a unique neural network approach inspired by a technique that has revolutionized the field of vision: pixel-wise image classification, which we combine with cross entropy loss and pretraining of the CNN as an autoencoder on singing voice spectrograms. The pixel-wise classification technique directly estimates the sound source label for each time-frequency (T-F) bin in our spectrogram image, thus eliminating common pre- and postprocessing tasks. The prop…
Spoken content processing (such as retrieval and browsing) is maturing, but the singing content is still almost completely left out. Songs are human voice carrying plenty of semantic information just as speech, and may be considered as a special type of speech with highly flexible prosody. The various problems in song audio, for example the significantly changing phone duration over highly flexible pitch contours, make the recognition of lyrics from song audio much more difficult. This paper reports an initial attempt towards this goal. We collected music-removed version of English songs direc…

Singer voice classification is a meaningful task in the digital era. With a huge number of songs today, identifying a singer is very helpful for music information retrieval, music properties indexing, and so on. In this paper, we propose a new method to identify the singer's name based on analysis of Vietnamese popular music. We employ the use of vocal segment detection and singing voice separation as the pre-processing steps. The purpose of these steps is to extract the singer's voice from the mixture sound. In order to build a singer classifier, we propose a neural network architecture worki…

Can we make a famous rap singer like Eminem sing whatever our favorite song? Singing style transfer attempts to make this possible, by replacing the vocal of a song from the source singer to the target singer. This paper presents a method that learns from unpaired data for singing style transfer using generative adversarial networks.
Commonly music has an obvious hierarchical structure, especially for the singing parts which usually act as the main melody in pop songs. However, most of the current singing annotation datasets only record symbolic information of music notes, ignoring the structure of music. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical singing annotation dataset that consists of 68 pop songs from Youtube. This dataset records the onset/offset time, pitch, duration, and lyric of each musical note in an enhanced LyRiCs format to present the hierarchical structure of music. We annotate each song in a two-stage proce…

In this paper, we study the issue of automatic singer identification (SID) in popular music recordings, which aims to recognize who sang a given piece of song. The main challenge for this investigation lies in the fact that a singer's singing voice changes and intertwines with the signal of background accompaniment in time domain. To handle this challenge, we propose the KNN-Net for SID, which is a deep neural network model with the goal of learning local timbre feature representation from the mixture of singer voice and background music. Unlike other deep neural networks using the softmax lay…
This paper presents ByteSing, a Chinese singing voice synthesis (SVS) system based on duration allocated Tacotron-like acoustic models and WaveRNN neural vocoders. Different from the conventional SVS models, the proposed ByteSing employs Tacotron-like encoder-decoder structures as the acoustic models, in which the CBHG models and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are explored as encoders and decoders respectively. Meanwhile an auxiliary phoneme duration prediction model is utilized to expand the input sequence, which can enhance the model controllable capacity, model stability and tempo predict…

Singing voice conversion is a task to convert a song sang by a source singer to the voice of a target singer. In this paper, we propose using a parallel data free, many-to-one voice conversion technique on singing voices. A phonetic posterior feature is first generated by decoding singing voices through a robust Automatic Speech Recognition Engine (ASR). Then, a trained Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with a Deep Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (DBLSTM) structure is used to model the mapping from person-independent content to the acoustic features of the target person. F0 and aperiodic are…
Singing voice conversion (SVC) aims to convert the voice of one singer to that of other singers while keeping the singing content and melody. On top of recent voice conversion works, we propose a novel model to steadily convert songs while keeping their naturalness and intonation. We build an end-to-end architecture, taking phonetic posteriorgrams (PPGs) as inputs and generating mel spectrograms. Specifically, we implement two separate encoders: one encodes PPGs as content, and the other compresses mel spectrograms to supply acoustic and musical information. To improve the performance on timbr…
