Context: A variety of formation models for dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies have been proposed in the literature, but generally they have not been quantitatively compared with observations. Aims: We search for chemodynamical patterns in our observational data set and compare the results with mock galaxies consisting of pure random motions, and simulated dwarfs formed via the dissolving star cluster and tidal stirring models. Methods: We made use of a new spectroscopic data set for the Milky Way dSph Leo I, combining 288 stars observed with Magellan/IMACS and existing Keck/DEIMOS data, to provide velocity and metallicity measurements for 953 Leo I member stars. We used a specially developed algorithm called Beacon to detect chemo-kinematical patterns in the observed and simulated data. Results: After analysing the Leo I data, we report the detection of 14 candidate streams of stars that may have originated in disrupted star clusters. The angular momentum vectors of these streams are randomly oriented, consistent with the lack of rotation in Leo I. These results are consistent with the predictions of the dissolving cluster model. In contrast, we find fewer candidate stream signals in mock data sets that lack coherent motions ~99% of the time. The chemodynamical analysis of the tidal stirring simulation produces streams that share a common orientation of their angular momenta, which is inconsistent with the Leo I data. Conclusions: Even though it is very difficult to distinguish which of the detected streams are real and which are only noise, we can be certain that there are more streams detected in the observational data of Leo I than expected in pure random data.
We conducted a large spectroscopic survey of 336 red giants in the direction of the Leo II dwarf galaxy using Hectochelle on the MMT, and conclude that 175 of them are members based on their radial velocities and surface gravities. Of this set, 40 stars have never before been spectroscopically observed. The systemic velocity of the dwarf is 78.3+-0.6 km/s with a velocity dispersion of 7.4+-0.4 km/s . We identify one star beyond the tidal radius of Leo II but find no signatures of uniform rotation, kinematic asymmetries, or streams. The stars show a strong metallicity gradient of -1.53+-0.10 de…
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has already begun to discover what will ultimately be thousands of exoplanets around nearby cool bright stars. These potential host stars must be well-understood to accurately characterize exoplanets at the individual and population levels. We present a catalogue of the chemo-kinematic properties of 2,218,434 stars in the TESS Candidate Target List using survey data from Gaia DR2, APOGEE, GALAH, RAVE, LAMOST, and photometrically-derived stellar properties from SkyMapper. We compute kinematic thin disc, thick disc, and halo membership probabiliti…
The Milky Way nuclear star cluster (MW NSC) has been used as a template to understand the origin and evolution of galactic nuclei and the interaction of nuclear star clusters with supermassive black holes. It is the only nuclear star cluster with a supermassive black hole where we can resolve individual stars to measure their kinematics and metal abundance to reconstruct its formation history. Here, we present results of the first chemo-dynamical model of the inner 1 pc of the MW NSC using metallicity and radial velocity data from the KMOS spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. We find evid…
We present a chemodynamical analysis of the Leo~V dwarf galaxy, based on Keck II DEIMOS spectra of 8 member stars. We find a systemic velocity for the system of $\langle v_r\rangle = 170.9^{+ 2.1}_{-1.9}$kms$^{-1}$, and barely resolve a velocity dispersion for the system, with $σ_{vr} = 2.3^{+3.2}_{-1.6}$kms$^{-1}$, consistent with previous studies of Leo~V. The poorly resolved dispersion means we are unable to adequately constrain the dark matter content of Leo~V. We find an average metallicity for the dwarf of [Fe/H]$ = -2.48\pm0.21$, and measure a significant spread in the iron abundance of…
We have developed a novel technique based on a clustering algorithm which searches for kinematically- and chemically-clustered stars in the APOGEE DR12 Cannon data. As compared to classical chemical tagging, the kinematic information included in our methodology allows us to identify stars that are members of known globular clusters with greater confidence. We apply our algorithm to the entire APOGEE catalog of 150,615 stars whose chemical abundances are derived by the Cannon. Our methodology found anti-correlations between the elements Al and Mg, Na and O, and C and N previously identified in …
We present a Bayesian method to identify multiple (chemodynamic) stellar populations in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) using velocity, metallicity, and positional stellar data without the assumption of spherical symmetry. We apply this method to a new Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of the Ursa Minor (UMi) dSph. We identify 892 likely members, making this the largest UMi sample with line-of-sight velocity and metallicity measurements. Our Bayesian method detects two distinct chemodynamic populations with high significance ($\ln{B}\sim33$). The metal-rich ($[{\rm Fe/H}]=-2.05\pm0.03$) popul…
Using Gaia DR2, we trace the Anticenter Stream (ACS) in various stellar populations across the sky and find that it is kinematically and spatially decoupled from the Monoceros Ring. Using stars from {\sc lamost} and {\sc segue}, we show that the ACS is systematically more metal-poor than Monoceros by $0.1$ dex with indications of a narrower metallicity spread. Furthermore, the ACS is predominantly populated of old stars ($\sim 10\,\rm{Gyr}$), whereas Monoceros has a pronounced tail of younger stars ($6-10\, \rm{Gyr}$) as revealed by their cumulative age distributions. Put togehter, all of this…
In order to minimize environmental effects and gain an insight into the internal mechanisms that shape the properties of the early-type dwarf systems, we study one of the few isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) of the Local Group (LG): Cetus. We obtained VLT/FORS2 spectra ($R\sim2600$) in the region of the nIR CaII triplet lines for 80 candidate red giant branch stars. The analysis yielded line-of-sight velocities and metallicities ([Fe/H]) for 54 bona fide member stars. The kinematic analysis shows that Cetus is a mainly pressure-supported ($σ_v = 11.0_{-1.3}^{+1.6}$ km/s), dark-matter…
Based upon a metallicity selection, we identify a significant sub-population of the inner halo globular clusters in the Andromeda Galaxy which we name the Dulais Structure. It is distinguished as a co-rotating group of 10-20 globular clusters which appear to be kinematically distinct from, and on average more metal-poor than, the majority of the inner halo population. Intriguingly, the orbital axis of this Dulais Structure is closely aligned with that of the younger accretion event recently identified using a sub-population of globular clusters in the outer halo of Andromeda, and this is stron…
Galactic Archaeology, i.e. the use of chemo-dynamical information for stellar samples covering large portions of the Milky Way to infer the dominant processes involved in its formation and evolution, is now a powerful method thanks to the large recently completed and ongoing spectroscopic surveys. It is now important to ask the right questions when analyzing and interpreting the information contained in these rich datasets. To this aim, we have developed a chemodynamical model for the Milky Way that provides quantitative predictions to be compared with the chemo-kinematical properties extracte…
We present an investigation of the globular cluster (GC) systems of NGC 3607 and NGC 3608 as part of the ongoing SLUGGS survey. We use wide-field imaging data from the Subaru telescope in the g, r, and i filters to analyse the radial density, colour and azimuthal distributions of both GC systems. With the complementary kinematic data obtained from the Keck II telescope, we measure the radial velocities of a total of 81 GCs. Our results show that the GC systems of NGC 3607 and NGC 3608 have a detectable spatial extent of ~ 15, and 13 galaxy effective radii, respectively. Both GC systems show a …
Low-mass dwarf galaxies are very sensitive test-beds for theories of cosmic structure formation since their weak gravitational fields allow the effects of the relevant physical processes to clearly stand out. Up to now, no unified account exists of the sometimes seemingly conflicting properties of the faintest isolated dwarfs in and around the Local Group, such as Leo T and the recently discovered Leo P and Pisces A systems. Using new numerical simulations, we show that this serious challenge to our understanding of galaxy formation can be effectively resolved by taking into account the regula…
The velocity dispersions of stars near the Sun are known to increase with stellar age, but age can be difficult to determine so a proxy like the abundance of alpha elements (e.g., Mg) with respect to iron, [alpha/Fe], is used. Here we report an unexpected behavior found in the velocity dispersion of a sample of giant stars from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey with high quality chemical and kinematical information, in that it decreases strongly for stars with [Mg/Fe] > 0.4 dex (i.e., those that formed in the first Gyr of the Galaxy's life). These findings can be explained by pertur…
Combining stellar atmospheric parameters, such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity, with barycentric radial velocity data provides insight into the chemo-dynamics of the Milky Way and our local Galactic environment. We analyze 3075 stars with spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) MARVELS radial velocity survey and present atmospheric parameters for 2343 dwarf stars using the spectral indices method, a modified version of the equivalent width method. We present barycentric radial velocities for a sample of 2610 stars with a median uncertainty…
While recent sky surveys have uncovered large numbers of ever fainter Milky Way satellites, their classification as star clusters, low-luminosity galaxies, or tidal overdensities remains often unclear. Likewise, their contributions to the build-up of the halo is yet debated. In this contribution we will discuss the current knowledge of the stellar populations and chemo-dynamics in these puzzling satellites, with a particular focus on dwarf spheroidal galaxies and the globular clusters in the outer Galactic halo. Also the question of whether some of the outermost halo objects are dynamically as…
The survey of planetary nebulae in Andromeda (M31) VII. Predictions of a major merger simulation model compared with chemodynamical data of the disc and inner halo substructures
The study of open-cluster chemical abundances provides insights on stellar nucleosynthesis processes and on Galactic chemo-dynamical evolution. In this paper we present an extended abundance analysis of 10 species (Fe, Ni, Cr, V, Sc, Si, Ca, Ti, Mg, O) for red giant stars in 18 OCCASO clusters. This represents a homogeneous sample regarding the instrument features, method, line list and solar abundances from confirmed member stars. We perform an extensive comparison with previous results in the literature, and in particular with the Gaia FGK Benchmark stars Arcturus and $μ$Leo. We investigate …
We present the results of a set of high resolution chemo-dynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies in a $Λ$CDM cosmology. Out of an original 3.4 Mpc$^3$/h$^3$ cosmological box, a sample of 27 systems are zoomed-in from z=70 to z=0. Gas and stellar properties are confronted to the observations in the greatest details: in addition to the galaxy global properties, we investigate the model galaxy velocity dispersion profiles, half-light radii, star formation histories, metallicity distributions, and [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios. The formation and sustainability of the metallicity gradients and kinetical…
The low-metallicity, kinematically interesting dwarf stars studied by Stephens \& Boesgaard (2002, SB02) are re-examined using Gaia DR2 astrometry, and updated model atmospheres and atomic line data. New stellar parameters are determined based on the Gaia DR2 parallactic distances and Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database isochrones. These are in excellent agreement with spectroscopically determined stellar parameters for stars with [Fe/H]$>-2$; however, large disagreements are found for stars with [Fe/H]$\le-2$, with offsets as large as $Δ$T$_{\rm eff}\sim+500$ K and $Δ$log\,$g\sim+1.0$. A sub…
The chemo-dynamics of galaxy halos beyond the Local Group may now be mapped out through the use of globular clusters and planetary nebulae as bright tracer objects, along with deep multi-slit spectroscopy of the integrated stellar light. We present results from surveying nearby early-type galaxies, including evidence for kinematically distinct halos that may reflect two-phase galaxy assembly. We also demonstrate the utility of the tracer approach in measuring the kinematics of stellar substructures around the Umbrella Galaxy, which allow us to reconstruct the progenitor properties and stream o…
We carry out a joint spatial-kinematical-metallicity analysis of globular clusters (GCs) around the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), using a homogeneous, high-quality spectroscopic dataset. In particular, we remove the contaminating young clusters that have plagued many previous analyses. We find that the clusters can be divided into three major metallicity groups based on their radial distributions: (1) an inner metal-rich group ([Fe/H] > -0.4), (2) a group with intermediate metallicity (with median [Fe/H]=-1), (3) and a metal-poor group, with [Fe/H] < -1.5. The metal-rich group has kinematics and spa…
We present polarimetric observations in the UBVRI bands of 72 stars located in the direction of the medium age open cluster NGC 5617. Our intention is to use polarimetry as a tool membership identification, by building on previous investigations intended mainly to determine the cluster's general characteristics rather than provide membership suitable for studies such as stellar content and metallicity, as well as study the characteristics of the dust lying between the Sun and the cluster. The obsevations were carried out using the five-channel photopolarimeter of the Torino Astronomical Observ…

We have developed a chemo-dynamical approach to assign 36,010 metal-poor SkyMapper stars to various Galactic stellar populations. Using two independent techniques (velocity and action space behavior), $Gaia$ EDR3 astrometry, and photometric metallicities, we selected stars with the characteristics of the "metal-weak" thick disk population by minimizing contamination by the canonical thick disk or other Galactic structures. This sample comprises 7,127 stars, spans a metallicity range of $-3.50<${\metal}~$<-0.8$, and has a systematic rotational velocity of $\langle V_ϕ\rangle=154$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ …
We present the stellar kinematics across the Galactic bulge and into the disk at positive longitudes from the SDSS-III APOGEE spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way. APOGEE includes extensive coverage of the stellar populations of the bulge along the mid-plane and near-plane regions. From these data, we have produced kinematic maps of 10,000 stars across longitudes 0 deg < l < 65 deg, and primarily across latitudes of |b| < 5 deg in the bulge region. The APOGEE data reveal that the bulge is cylindrically rotating across all latitudes and is kinematically hottest at the very centre of the bulge,…
Deciphering the assembly history of the Milky Way is a formidable task, which becomes possible only if one can produce high-resolution chrono-chemo-kinematical maps of the Galaxy. Data from large-scale astrometric and spectroscopic surveys will soon provide us with a well-defined view of the current chemo-kinematical structure of the Milky Way, but will only enable a blurred view on the temporal sequence that led to the present-day Galaxy. As demonstrated by the (ongoing) exploitation of data from the pioneering photometric missions CoRoT, Kepler, and K2, asteroseismology provides the way forw…
