We prove a large deviation principle for the point process associated to $k$-element connected components in $\mathbb R^d$ with respect to the connectivity radii $r_n\to\infty$. The random points are generated from a homogeneous Poisson point process, so that $(r_n)_{n\ge1}$ satisfies $n^kr_n^{d(k-1)}\to\infty$ and $nr_n^d\to0$ as $n\to\infty$ (i.e., sparse regime). The rate function for the obtained large deviation principle can be represented as relative entropy. As an application, we deduce large deviation principles for various functionals and point processes appearing in stochastic geometry and topology. As concrete examples of topological invariants, we consider persistent Betti numbers of geometric complexes and the number of Morse critical points of the min-type distance function.
We find large deviation principles for the degree distribution and the proportion of isolated vertices for the near intermediate random geometric graph models on n vertices placed uniformly in [0, 1]^d, for d in N. In the course of the proof of these large deviation results we find joint large deviation principle for the empirical locality measure of the coloured random geometric graphs,(Canning & Penman, 2003).
This work develops a methodology for analyzing large-deviation lower tails associated with geometric functionals computed on a homogeneous Poisson point process. The technique applies to characteristics expressed in terms of stabilizing score functions exhibiting suitable monotonicity properties. We apply our results to clique counts in the random geometric graph, intrinsic volumes of Poisson-Voronoi cells, as well as power-weighted edge lengths in the random geometric, $k$-nearest neighbor and relative neighborhood graph.
We prove a geometric extension of Lévy's occupation time arcsine law near a hypersurface on a Riemannian manifold. The deviation from the classic arcsine law is of the order of the square-root of the time horizon and is expressed explicitly in terms of the mean curvature of the hypersurface and the local time of the underlying standard Brownian motion.
We prove joint large deviation principle for the \emph{ empirical pair measure} and \emph{empirical locality measure} of the \emph{near intermediate} coloured random geometric graph models on $n$ points picked uniformly in a $d-$dimensional torus of a unit circumference. From this result we obtain large deviation principles for the \emph{number of edges per vertex}, the \emph{degree distribution and the proportion of isolated vertices } for the \emph{near intermediate} random geometric graph models.
In this article for a finite typed random geometric graph we define the empirical locality distribution, which records the number of nodes of a given type linked to a given number of nodes of each type. We find large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical locality measure given the empirical pair measure and the empirical type measure of the typed random geometric graphs. From this LDP, we derive large deviation principles for the degree measure and the proportion of detached nodes in the classical Erdos-Renyi graph defined on [0, 1]^d. This graphs have been suggested by (Canning and Penm…
Functionals in geometric probability are often expressed as sums of bounded functions exhibiting exponential stabilization. Methods based on cumulant techniques and exponential modifications of measures show that such functionals satisfy moderate deviation principles. This leads to moderate deviation principles and laws of the iterated logarithm for random packing models as well as for statistics associated with germ-grain models and $k$ nearest neighbor graphs.
The purpose of the present paper is to establish explicit bounds on moderate deviation probabilities for a rather general class of geometric functionals enjoying the stabilization property, under Poisson input and the assumption of a certain control over the growth of the moments of the functional and its radius of stabilization. Our proof techniques rely on cumulant expansions and cluster measures and yield completely explicit bounds on deviation probabilities. In addition, we establish a new criterion for the limiting variance to be non-degenerate. Moreover, our main result provides a new ce…
Starting from the construction of a geometric rough path associated with a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in]{1/4}, {1/2}[$ given by Coutin and Qian (2002), we prove a large deviation principle in the space of geometric rough paths, extending classical results on Gaussian processes. As a by-product, geometric rough paths associated to elements of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of the fractional Brownian motion are obtained and an explicit integral representation is given.
We consider stochastic wave map equation on real line with solutions taking values in a $d$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We show first that this equation has unique, global, strong in PDE sense, solution in local Sobolev spaces. The main result of the paper is a proof of the Large Deviations Principle for solutions in the case of vanishing noise.

We establish a moderate deviation principle for the maximum likelihood estimator of the four parameters of a geometrically ergodic Heston process. We also obtain moderate deviations for the maximum likelihood estimator of the couple of dimensional and drift parameters of a generalized squared radial Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We restrict ourselves to the most tractable case where the dimensional parameter satisfies $a>2$ and the drift coefficient is such that $b<0$. In contrast to the previous literature, parameters are estimated simultaneously.
First, under a geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide some limit theorems and some probability inequalities for the bifurcating Markov chains (BMC). The BMC model was introduced by Guyon to detect cellular aging from cell lineage, and our aim is thus to complete his asymptotic results. The deviation inequalities are then applied to derive first result on the moderate deviation principle (MDP) for a functional of the BMC with a restricted range of speed, but with a function which can be unbounded. Next, under a uniform geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide deviation inequalities for …
In this paper we study the one dimensional random geometric graph when the location of the nodes are independent and exponentially distributed. We derive exact results and the limit theorems for the connectivity and other properties associated with this random graph. We show that the asymptotic properties of a graph with a truncated exponential distribution can be obtained using the exponential random geometric graph.
We consider the $p$-generalized arithmetic-geometric mean inequality for vectors chosen randomly from the $\ell_p^n$-ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this setting the inequality can be improved or reversed up to a respective scalar constant with high probability, and central limit theorems and large deviation results with respect to this constant have been shown. We sharpen these large deviation results in the spirit of Bahadur and Ranga Rao, thereby providing concrete and asymptotically exact estimates on a non-logarithmic scale for the probability of the inequality being improvable or reversible u…
We study large deviation principles for Gaussian processes lifted to the free nilpotent group of step N. We apply this to a large class of Gaussian processes lifted to geometric rough paths. A large deviation principle for enhanced (fractional) Brownian motion, in Hoelder- or modulus topology, appears as special case.
It has been shown recently that the optimal fluctuation method -- essentially geometrical optics -- provides a valuable insight into large deviations of Brownian motion. Here we extend the geometrical optics formalism to two-sided, $-\infty<t<\infty$, fractional Brownian motion (fBM) on the line, which is "pushed" to a large deviation regime by imposed constraints. We test the formalism on three examples where exact solutions are available: the two- and three-point probability distributions of the fBm and the distribution of the area under the fBm on a specified time interval. Then we apply th…
We study the asymptotic nature of geometric structures formed from a point cloud of observations of (generally heavy tailed) distributions in a Euclidean space of dimension greater than one. A typical example is given by the Betti numbers of Čech complexes built over the cloud. The structure of dependence and sparcity (away from the origin) generated by these distributions leads to limit laws expressible via non-homogeneous, random, Poisson measures. The parametrisation of the limits depends on both the tail decay rate of the observations and the particular geometric constraint being considere…
Let $A$ be an isotropic, sub-gaussian $m \times n$ matrix. We prove that the process $Z_x := \|Ax\|_2 - \sqrt m \|x\|_2$ has sub-gaussian increments. Using this, we show that for any bounded set $T \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, the deviation of $\|Ax\|_2$ around its mean is uniformly bounded by the Gaussian complexity of $T$. We also prove a local version of this theorem, which allows for unbounded sets. These theorems have various applications, some of which are reviewed in this paper. In particular, we give a new result regarding model selection in the constrained linear model.
We study a topologically exact, negative Schwarzian unimodal map whose critical point is non-recurrent and flat. Assuming the critical order is either logarithmic or polynomial, we establish the Large Deviation Principle and give a partial description of the zeros of the corresponding rate functions. We apply our main results to a certain parametrized family of unimodal maps in the same topological conjugacy class, and give a complete description of the zeros of the rate functions. We observe a qualitative change at a transition parameter, and show that the sets of zeros depend continuously on…
Consider the partial sums {S_t} of a real-valued functional F(Phi(t)) of a Markov chain {Phi(t)} with values in a general state space. Assuming only that the Markov chain is geometrically ergodic and that the functional F is bounded, the following conclusions are obtained: 1. Spectral theory: Well-behaved solutions can be constructed for the ``multiplicative Poisson equation''. 2. A ``multiplicative'' mean ergodic theorem: For all complex αin a neighborhood of the origin, the normalized mean of \exp(αS_t) converges exponentially fast to a solution of the multiplicative Poisson equation. 3. Edg…
We study the dynamics of smooth interval maps with non-flat critical points. For every such a map that is topologically exact, we establish the full (level-2) Large Deviation Principle for empirical means. In particular, the Large Deviation Principle holds for every non\nobreakdash-renormalizable quadratic map. This includes the maps without physical measure found by Hofbauer and Keller, and challenges the widely-shared view of the Large Deviation Principle as a refinement of laws of large numbers.
We derive normal approximation results for a class of stabilizing functionals of binomial or Poisson point process, that are not necessarily expressible as sums of certain score functions. Our approach is based on a flexible notion of the add-one cost operator, which helps one to deal with the second-order cost operator via suitably appropriate first-order operators. We combine this flexible notion with the theory of strong stabilization to establish our results. We illustrate the applicability of our results by establishing normal approximation results for certain geometric and topological st…
In this paper, we consider a one-dimensional random geometric graph process with the inter-nodal gaps evolving according to an exponential AR(1) process, which may serve as a mobile wireless network model. The transition probability matrix and stationary distribution are derived for the Markov chains in terms of network connectivity and the number of components. We characterize an algorithm for the hitting time regarding disconnectivity. In addition, we also study topological properties for static snapshots. We obtain the degree distributions as well as asymptotic precise bounds and strong law…
