Recent advances in 3D object detection are made by developing the refinement stage for voxel-based Region Proposal Networks (RPN) to better strike the balance between accuracy and efficiency. A popular approach among state-of-the-art frameworks is to divide proposals, or Regions of Interest (ROI), into grids and extract features for each grid location before synthesizing them to form ROI features. While achieving impressive performances, such an approach involves several hand-crafted components (e.g. grid sampling, set abstraction) which requires expert knowledge to be tuned correctly. This paper proposes a data-driven approach to ROI feature computing named APRO3D-Net which consists of a voxel-based RPN and a refinement stage made of Vector Attention. Unlike the original multi-head attention, Vector Attention assigns different weights to different channels within a point feature, thus being able to capture a more sophisticated relation between pooled points and ROI. Our method achieves a competitive performance of 84.85 AP for class Car at moderate difficulty on the validation set of KITTI and 47.03 mAP (average over 10 classes) on NuScenes while having the least parameters compared to closely related methods and attaining an inference speed at 15 FPS on NVIDIA V100 GPU. The code is released at https://github.com/quan-dao/APRO3D-Net.
Class-agnostic object proposal generation is an important first step in many object detection pipelines. However, object proposals of modern systems are rather inaccurate in terms of segmentation and only roughly adhere to object boundaries. Since typical refinement steps are usually not applicable to thousands of proposals, we propose a superpixel-based refinement system for object proposal generation systems. Utilizing precise superpixels and superpixel pooling on deep features, we refine initial coarse proposals in an end-to-end learned system. Furthermore, we propose a novel DeepFH segment…
Precise segmentation of objects is an important problem in tasks like class-agnostic object proposal generation or instance segmentation. Deep learning-based systems usually generate segmentations of objects based on coarse feature maps, due to the inherent downsampling in CNNs. This leads to segmentation boundaries not adhering well to the object boundaries in the image. To tackle this problem, we introduce a new superpixel-based refinement approach on top of the state-of-the-art object proposal system AttentionMask. The refinement utilizes superpixel pooling for feature extraction and a nove…
Few-shot object detection has gained significant attention in recent years as it has the potential to greatly reduce the reliance on large amounts of manually annotated bounding boxes. While most existing few-shot object detection literature primarily focuses on bounding box classification by obtaining as discriminative feature embeddings as possible, we emphasize the necessity of handling the lack of intersection-over-union (IoU) variations induced by a biased distribution of novel samples. In this paper, we analyze the IoU imbalance that is caused by the relatively high number of low-quality…
Existing approaches for spatio-temporal action detection in videos are limited by the spatial extent and temporal duration of the actions. In this paper, we present a modular system for spatio-temporal action detection in untrimmed security videos. We propose a two stage approach. The first stage generates dense spatio-temporal proposals using hierarchical clustering and temporal jittering techniques on frame-wise object detections. The second stage is a Temporal Refinement I3D (TRI-3D) network that performs action classification and temporal refinement on the generated proposals. The object d…

Weakly Supervised Object Detection (WSOD), using only image-level annotations to train object detectors, is of growing importance in object recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel deep network for WSOD. Unlike previous networks that transfer the object detection problem to an image classification problem using Multiple Instance Learning (MIL), our strategy generates proposal clusters to learn refined instance classifiers by an iterative process. The proposals in the same cluster are spatially adjacent and associated with the same object. This prevents the network from concentrating too …

In this paper we present a novel radar-camera sensor fusion framework for accurate object detection and distance estimation in autonomous driving scenarios. The proposed architecture uses a middle-fusion approach to fuse the radar point clouds and RGB images. Our radar object proposal network uses radar point clouds to generate 3D proposals from a set of 3D prior boxes. These proposals are mapped to the image and fed into a Radar Proposal Refinement (RPR) network for objectness score prediction and box refinement. The RPR network utilizes both radar information and image feature maps to genera…

Weakly-supervised instance segmentation (WSIS) has been considered as a more challenging task than weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS). Compared to WSSS, WSIS requires instance-wise localization, which is difficult to extract from image-level labels. To tackle the problem, most WSIS approaches use off-the-shelf proposal techniques that require pre-training with instance or object level labels, deviating the fundamental definition of the fully-image-level supervised setting. In this paper, we propose a novel approach including two innovative components. First, we propose a semantic k…
We introduce a novel 3D object proposal approach named Generative Shape Proposal Network (GSPN) for instance segmentation in point cloud data. Instead of treating object proposal as a direct bounding box regression problem, we take an analysis-by-synthesis strategy and generate proposals by reconstructing shapes from noisy observations in a scene. We incorporate GSPN into a novel 3D instance segmentation framework named Region-based PointNet (R-PointNet) which allows flexible proposal refinement and instance segmentation generation. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on several 3D instanc…
We present Deformable PV-RCNN, a high-performing point-cloud based 3D object detector. Currently, the proposal refinement methods used by the state-of-the-art two-stage detectors cannot adequately accommodate differing object scales, varying point-cloud density, part-deformation and clutter. We present a proposal refinement module inspired by 2D deformable convolution networks that can adaptively gather instance-specific features from locations where informative content exists. We also propose a simple context gating mechanism which allows the keypoints to select relevant context information f…

Weakly Supervised Object Detection (WSOD) enables the training of object detection models using only image-level annotations. State-of-the-art WSOD detectors commonly rely on multi-instance learning (MIL) as the backbone of their detectors and assume that the bounding box proposals of an image are independent of each other. However, since such approaches only utilize the highest score proposal and discard the potentially useful information from other proposals, their independent MIL backbone often limits models to salient parts of an object or causes them to detect only one object per class. T…

Weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) with only image-level supervision is a challenging task. Most existing methods exploit Class Activation Maps (CAM) to generate pixel-level pseudo labels for supervised training. However, due to the local receptive field of Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), CAM applied to CNNs often suffers from partial activation -- highlighting the most discriminative part instead of the entire object area. In order to capture both local features and global representations, the Conformer has been proposed to combine a visual transformer branch with a CNN branch.…

Object proposals greatly benefit object detection task in recent state-of-the-art works. However, the existing object proposals usually have low localization accuracy at high intersection over union threshold. To address it, we apply saliency detection to each bounding box to improve their quality in this paper. We first present a geodesic saliency detection method in contour, which is designed to find closed contours. Then, we apply it to each candidate box with multi-sizes, and refined boxes can be easily produced in the obtained saliency maps which are further used to calculate saliency sco…

The encoder-decoder architecture is widely used as a lightweight semantic segmentation network. However, it struggles with a limited performance compared to a well-designed Dilated-FCN model for two major problems. First, commonly used upsampling methods in the decoder such as interpolation and deconvolution suffer from a local receptive field, unable to encode global contexts. Second, low-level features may bring noises to the network decoder through skip connections for the inadequacy of semantic concepts in early encoder layers. To tackle these challenges, a Global Enhancement Method is pro…

In this paper, we propose a zoom-out-and-in network for generating object proposals. A key observation is that it is difficult to classify anchors of different sizes with the same set of features. Anchors of different sizes should be placed accordingly based on different depth within a network: smaller boxes on high-resolution layers with a smaller stride while larger boxes on low-resolution counterparts with a larger stride. Inspired by the conv/deconv structure, we fully leverage the low-level local details and high-level regional semantics from two feature map streams, which are complimenta…

There has been a recent surge of interest in introducing transformers to 3D human pose estimation (HPE) due to their powerful capabilities in modeling long-term dependencies. However, existing transformer-based methods treat body joints as equally important inputs and ignore the prior knowledge of human skeleton topology in the self-attention mechanism. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we propose a Pose-Oriented Transformer (POT) with uncertainty guided refinement for 3D HPE. Specifically, we first develop novel pose-oriented self-attention mechanism and distance-related position embedding…
In this paper, we propose a refined scene text detector with a \textit{novel} Feature Enhancement Network (FEN) for Region Proposal and Text Detection Refinement. Retrospectively, both region proposal with \textit{only} $3\times 3$ sliding-window feature and text detection refinement with \textit{single scale} high level feature are insufficient, especially for smaller scene text. Therefore, we design a new FEN network with \textit{task-specific}, \textit{low} and \textit{high} level semantic features fusion to improve the performance of text detection. The existing SOD methods can satisfy the detection performance for natural scene images, but they are not well adapted to RSI-SOD due to the above-mentioned image characteristics in remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose a novel Attention Guided Network (AGNet) for SOD in optical RSIs, including position enhancement stage and detail refinement stage. Specifically, the position enhancement s…

In this paper we focus on improving object detection performance in terms of recall. We propose a post-detection stage during which we explore the image with the objective of recovering missed detections. This exploration is performed by sampling object proposals in the image. We analyze four different strategies to perform this sampling, giving special attention to strategies that exploit spatial relations between objects. In addition, we propose a novel method to discover higher-order relations between groups of objects. Experiments on the challenging KITTI dataset show that our proposed rel…
Recently, most of the state-of-the-art human pose estimation methods are based on heatmap regression. The final coordinates of keypoints are obtained by decoding heatmap directly. In this paper, we aim to find a better approach to get more accurate localization results. We mainly put forward two suggestions for improvement: 1) different features and methods should be applied for rough and accurate localization, 2) relationship between keypoints should be considered. Specifically, we propose a two-stage graph-based and model-agnostic framework, called Graph-PCNN, with a localization subnet and …

Most of existing detection pipelines treat object proposals independently and predict bounding box locations and classification scores over them separately. However, the important semantic and spatial layout correlations among proposals are often ignored, which are actually useful for more accurate object detection. In this work, we propose a new EM-like group recursive learning approach to iteratively refine object proposals by incorporating such context of surrounding proposals and provide an optimal spatial configuration of object detections. In addition, we propose to incorporate the weakl…
The problem of computing category agnostic bounding box proposals is utilized as a core component in many computer vision tasks and thus has lately attracted a lot of attention. In this work we propose a new approach to tackle this problem that is based on an active strategy for generating box proposals that starts from a set of seed boxes, which are uniformly distributed on the image, and then progressively moves its attention on the promising image areas where it is more likely to discover well localized bounding box proposals. We call our approach AttractioNet and a core component of it is …
We introduce Patch Refinement a two-stage model for accurate 3D object detection and localization from point cloud data. Patch Refinement is composed of two independently trained Voxelnet-based networks, a Region Proposal Network (RPN) and a Local Refinement Network (LRN). We decompose the detection task into a preliminary Bird's Eye View (BEV) detection step and a local 3D detection step. Based on the proposed BEV locations by the RPN, we extract small point cloud subsets ("patches"), which are then processed by the LRN, which is less limited by memory constraints due to the small area of eac…
The real human attention is an interactive activity between our visual system and our brain, using both low-level visual stimulus and high-level semantic information. Previous image salient object detection (SOD) works conduct their saliency predictions in a multi-task manner, i.e., performing pixel-wise saliency regression and segmentation-like saliency refinement at the same time, which degenerates their feature backbones in revealing semantic information. However, given an image, we tend to pay more attention to those regions which are semantically salient even in the case that these region…

This paper aims to tackle the challenging problem of one-shot object detection. Given a query image patch whose class label is not included in the training data, the goal of the task is to detect all instances of the same class in a target image. To this end, we develop a novel {\em co-attention and co-excitation} (CoAE) framework that makes contributions in three key technical aspects. First, we propose to use the non-local operation to explore the co-attention embodied in each query-target pair and yield region proposals accounting for the one-shot situation. Second, we formulate a squeeze-a…

The deployment of automated systems to diagnose diseases from medical images is challenged by the requirement to localise the diagnosed diseases to justify or explain the classification decision. This requirement is hard to fulfil because most of the training sets available to develop these systems only contain global annotations, making the localisation of diseases a weakly supervised approach. The main methods designed for weakly supervised disease classification and localisation rely on saliency or attention maps that are not specifically trained for localisation, or on region proposals tha…
