We design a new feedback law to stabilize a linear infinite-dimensional control system, where the state operator generates a C0-group and the control operator is unbounded. Our feedback law is based on the integration of a mutated Gramian operator-valued function. In the structure of the aforementioned mutated Gramian operator, we utilize the weak observability inequality in [21, 14] and borrow some idea used to construct generalized Gramian operators in [11, 23, 24]. Unlike most related works where the exact controllability is required, we only assume the above-mentioned weak observability inequality which is equivalent to the stabilizability of the system.
We extend results on backstepping hybrid feedbacks by exploiting synergistic Lyapunov function and feedback (SLFF) pairs in a generalized form. Compared to existing results, we delineate SLFF pairs that are ready-made and do not require extra dynamic variables for backstepping. From an (weak) SLFF pair for an affine control system, we construct an SLFF pair for an extended system where the control input is produced through an integrator. The resulting hybrid feedback asymptotically stabilizes the extended system when the synergy gap for the original system is strictly positive. To highlight th…
We present a novel methodology for designing output-feedback backstepping boundary controllers for an unstable 1-D diffusion-reaction partial differential equation with spatially-varying reaction. Using "folding" transforms the parabolic PDE into a 2X2 coupled parabolic PDE system with coupling via folding boundary conditions. The folding approach is novel in the sense that the design of bilateral controllers can be generalized to centering around arbitrary points, which admit additional design parameters for both the state-feedback controller and the state observer. The design can be selectiv…
We discuss boundary control of a wave equation with a non-linear anti-damping boundary condition. We design structured finite-dimensional $H_\infty$-output feedback controllers which stabilize the infinite dimensional system exponentially in closed loop. The method is applied to control torsional vibrations in drilling systems with the goal to avoid slip-stick.
It is shown that an oblique projection based feedback control is able to stabilize the state of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, evolving in rectangular domains, to a given time-dependent trajectory. The number of actuators is finite and consists of a finite number of indicator functions supported in small subdomains. Simulations are presented, in the one-dimensional case, showing the stabilizing performance of the feedback control.
We study the output feedback exponential stabilization for a 1-d wave PDE with dynamic boundary. With only one measurement, we construct an infinite-dimensional state observer to trace the state and design an estimated state based controller to exponentially stabilize the original system. This is an essentially important improvement for the existence literature [Ö. Morgül, B.P. Rao and F. Conrad, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 39(10) (1994), 2140-2145] where two measurements including the high order angular velocity feedback were adopted. When a control matched nonlinear internal unce…
The conceptually new approach based on the logarithmic norm to design of robust adaptive state-feedback controller for linear time-varying (LTV) systems under system's modeling uncertainty and nonlinear external disturbance is proposed. This controller, consisting of two independent parts - adaptive and robust ones - globally asymptotically stabilizes every LTV system regardless how large the disturbance is.
This paper is concerned with the output feedback exponential stabilization for a flexible beam with tip mass. When there is no disturbance, it is shown that only one non-collocated measurement is enough to exponentially stabilize the original system by constructing an infinite-dimensional Luenberger state observer to track the state and designing an estimated state based output feedback control law. This essentially improves the existence result in [F. Conrad and O. Mörgül, SIAM J. Control Optim., 36 (1998), 1962-1986] where two collocated measurements including high order feedback were adopte…
We use the backstepping method to study the stabilization of a 1-D linear transport equation on the interval (0, L), by controlling the scalar amplitude of a piecewise regular function of the space variable in the source term. We prove that if the system is controllable in a periodic Sobolev space of order greater than 1, then the system can be stabilized exponentially in that space and, for any given decay rate, we give an explicit feedback law that achieves that decay rate.
Here we deal with the stabilization problem of non-diagonal systems by boundary control. In the studied setting, the boundary control input is subject to a constant delay. We use the spectral decomposition method and split the system into two components: an unstable and a stable one. To stabilize the unstable part of the system, we connect, for the first time in the literature, the famous backstepping control design technique with the direct-proportional control design. More precisely, we construct a proportional open-loop stabilizer, then, by means of the Artstein transformation we close the …
There exist many ways to stabilize an infinite-dimensional linear autonomous control systems when it is possible. Anyway, finding an exponentially stabilizing feedback control that is as simple as possible may be a challenge. The Riccati theory provides a nice feedback control but may be computationally demanding when considering a discretization scheme. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) offers a popular way to reduce large-dimensional systems. In the present paper, we establish that, under appropriate spectral assumptions, an exponentially stabilizing feedback Riccati control designed fro…
Designing a static state-feedback controller subject to structural constraint achieving asymptotic stability is a relevant problem with many applications, including network decentralized control, coordinated control, and sparse feedback design. Leveraging on the Projection Lemma, this work presents a new solution to a class of state-feedback control problems, in which the controller is constrained to belong to a given linear space. We show through extensive discussion and numerical examples that our approach leads to several advantages with respect to existing methods: first, it is computation…
An adaptive funnel control method is considered for the regulation of the output for a class of nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems on real Hilbert spaces. After a decomposition of the state space and some change of variables related to the Byrnes-Isidori form, it is shown that the funnel controller presented in (Berger et al., 2020) achieves the control objective under some assumptions on the nonlinear system dynamics, like well-posedness and Bounded-Input-State Bounded-Output (BISBO) stability. The theory is applied to the regulation of the temperature in a chemical plug-flow tubular reac…
The problem of feed-forward control of overhead crane system is discussed. By combining the Kalman's controllability theory and Hartman-Grobman theorem from dynamical system theory, a linear, continuous state feedback-based feed-forward controller that stabilizes the crane system at the desired end position of payload is designed. The efficacy of proposed controller is demonstrated by comparing the simulation experiment results for overhead crane with/without time-varying length of hoisting rope.
It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedback controls for general linear quadratic optimal control problem of stochastic evolution equation with random coefficients. A solution to this problem is given in [21] under some assumptions which can be verified for interesting concrete models, such as controlled stochastic wave equations, controlled stochastic Schrödinger equations, etc. More precisely, the authors establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator and the solvability of the corresponding operator-valued, backward stochastic Ric…
It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedbacks for general SLQs (i.e., stochastic linear quadratic control problems) with random coefficients in infinite dimensions; while the same problem but in finite dimensions was just addressed in a recent work [36]. This paper is devoted to giving a solution to this problem under some assumptions which can be verified for several interesting concrete models. More precisely, under these assumptions, we establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator for infinite dimensional SLQs and the solvability…

Recent research has shown that supervised learning can be an effective tool for designing optimal feedback controllers for high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems. But the behavior of these neural network (NN) controllers is still not well understood. In this paper we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that typical test accuracy metrics do not effectively capture the ability of an NN controller to stabilize a system. In particular, some NNs with high test accuracy can fail to stabilize the dynamics. To address this we propose two NN architectures which locally approximate a linear qua…
This paper studies the resilient control of networked systems in the presence of cyber attacks. In particular, we consider the state feedback stabilization problem for nonlinear systems when the state measurement is sent to the controller via a communication channel that only has a finite transmitting rate and is moreover subject to cyber attacks in the form of Denial-of-Service (DoS). We use a dynamic quantization method to update the quantization range of the encoder/decoder and characterize the number of bits for quantization needed to stabilize the system under a given level of DoS attacks…
We provide explicit time-varying feedback laws that locally stabilize the two dimensional internal controlled incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in arbitrarily small time. We also obtain quantitative rapid stabilization via stationary feedback laws, as well as quantitative null controllability with explicit controls having $e^{C/T}$ costs.

Recent research shows that supervised learning can be an effective tool for designing near-optimal feedback controllers for high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems. But the behavior of neural network controllers is still not well understood. In particular, some neural networks with high test accuracy can fail to even locally stabilize the dynamic system. To address this challenge we propose several novel neural network architectures, which we show guarantee local asymptotic stability while retaining the approximation capacity to learn the optimal feedback policy semi-globally. The proposed …
Brockett's necessary condition yields a test to determine whether a system can be made to stabilize about some operating point via continuous, purely state-dependent feedback. For many real-world systems, however, one wants to stabilize sets which are more general than a single point. One also wants to control such systems to operate safely by making obstacles and other "dangerous" sets repelling. We generalize Brockett's necessary condition to the case of stabilizing general compact subsets having a nonzero Euler characteristic in general ambient state spaces (smooth manifolds). Using this ge…
This paper deals with the stabilization of an anti-stable string equation with Dirichlet actuation where the instability appears because of the uncontrolled boundary condition. Then, infinitely many unstable poles are generated and an infinite dimensional control law is therefore proposed to exponentially stabilize the system. The idea behind the choice of the controller is to extend the domain of the PDE so that the anti-damping term is compensated by a damping at the other boundary condition. Additionally, notice that the system can then be exponentially stabilized with a chosen decay-rate a…
In this manuscript, we present a high-fidelity physics-based truth model of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system. We also present reduced-order control-oriented nonlinear and linear models of a synchronous generator-turbine system connected to a power grid. The reduced-order control-oriented models are next used to design various control strategies such as: proportional-integral derivative (PID), linear-quadratic regulator (LQR), pole placement-based state feedback, observer-based output feedback, loop transfer recovery (LTR)-based linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG), and nonlinear feedback…
