We revisit the superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. We obtain a newly suitable potential which is not singular at the outer horizon when a radial equation is expressed the Schrödinger-type equation in terms of the tortoise coordinate. From the potential analysis, we find a condition for the superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes.
We find two conditions for superradiant instability of Kerr-Newman black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation by analyzing asymptotic scalar potential and far-region wave function. Actually, they correspond to the condition for getting a trapping well. Also, we obtain the conditions for superradiant stability of Kerr-Newman black holes which states that there is no trapping well. The analysis is applied to Kerr black holes to find a condition for superradiant instability.
We study the superradiant instability of slowly rotating Kerr-Newman (sKN) black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. These black holes resemble closer the Reissner-Nordström black holes than the Kerr-Newman black holes. We compute the negative absorption cross section of a massive scalar for superradiant scattering in the low frequency limit. From the scalar potential analysis, we find that the superradiant instability is not allowed in the sKN black holes because the condition for a trapping well is not compatible with the superradiance condition. However, the rate of energy ex…
We study the superradiance instability of charged massive scalar field in the background of Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole. By employing the asymptotic matching technique to solve Klein-Gordon equation analytically, the complex parts of quasinormal frequencies are shown to be positive in the regime of superradiance. Because the calculation is performed in the approximation of small black hole, the result indicates that small Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole is unstable against the massive scalar field perturbation with small charge.
The superradiant stability of a Kerr-Newman black hole and charged massive scalar perturbation is investigated. We treat the black hole as a background geometry and study the equation of motion of the scalar perturbation. From the radial equation of motion, we derive the effective potential experienced by the scalar perturbation. By a careful analysis of this effective potential, it is found that when the inner and outer horizons of Kerr-Newman black hole satisfy $\frac{r_-}{r_+}\leqslant\frac{1}{3}$ and the charge-to-mass ratios of scalar perturbation and black hole satisfy $ \frac{q}{μ}\frac…
In this article, the superradiation stability of Kerr-Newman black holes is discussed by introducing the condition used in Kerr black holes y into them. Moreover, the motion equation of the minimal coupled scalar perturbation in a Kerr-Newman black hole is divided into angular and radial parts. Hod proved\cite{12} that the Kerr black hole should be superradiantly stable under massive scalar perturbation when $μ\ge \sqrt{2}mΩ_H$, where $μ$ is the mass. In this article, a new variable y is added here to expand the results of the above article. When $\sqrt{2(a^2+Q^2)}/{r^2_+}< ω< m\varOmega_H+q\v…
In this paper, we study a physical system that is composed of massive charged scalar field linearly coupled to a charged rotating Kerr-Newman black hole. Given the parameters of black hole and a specific set of "quantum" numbers, the parameter space of the scalar field, which is a plane spanned by its mass and charge, is divided into five partitions by three simple constraint lines and the existence line of scalar clouds. The physical properties of the system in these partitions are presented. It is found that superradiant instability may be possibly caused only in two of the partitions. In pa…
Entropy of the Kerr-Newman black hole is calculated via the brick wall method with maintaining careful attention to the contribution of superradiant scalar modes. It turns out that the nonsuperradinat and superradiant modes simultaneously contribute to the entropy with the same order in terms of the brick wall cutoff $ε$. In particular, the contribution of the superradiant modes to the entropy is negative. To avoid divergency in this method when the angular velocity tends to zero, we propose to intr oduce a lower bound of angular velocity and to treat the case of the angular momentum per unit …
Charged rotating Kerr-Newman black holes are known to be superradiantly unstable to perturbations of charged massive bosonic fields whose proper frequencies lie in the bounded regime $0 < ω< \text{min} \{ω_{\text{c}} \equiv m Ω_{\text{H}} + qΦ_{\text{H}},μ\}$ [here $\{Ω_{\text{H}}, Φ_{\text{H}}\}$ are respectively the angular velocity and electric potential of the Kerr-Newman black hole, and $\{m,q,μ\}$ are respectively the azimuthal harmonic index, the charge coupling constant, and the proper mass of the field]. In this paper we study analytically the complex resonance spectrum which characte…
A (charged) rotating black hole may be unstable against a (charged) massive scalar field perturbation due to the existence of superradiance modes. The stability property depends on the parameters of the system. In this paper, the superradiant stable parameter space is studied for the four-dimensional extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive and charged massive scalar perturbation. For the extremal Kerr case, it is found that when the angular frequency and proper mass of the scalar perturbation satisfy the inequality $ω<μ/\sqrt{3}$, the extremal Kerr black hole and scalar perturb…
We consider the propagation of a generic scalar field around a rotating and charged black hole. Using the partial wave method, we find, numerically, the total and partial absorption cross sections for different incidence angles. We investigate the low- and high-frequency limits, finding semi-analytical approximations for the absorption cross section, which we compare with our numerical results. Finally, we consider the superradiant regime, showing that, for charged fields, planar waves can be superradiantly scattered.
We investigate the timelike geodesics and the periapsis precession of orbits in the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour-Wyman spacetime. This spacetime represents the naked singularity spacetime in the Einstein-massless scalar system. We revisit the results in the previous studies and relax the assumptions about the eccentricity of a bound orbit and the size of a semilatus. We find that the negative periapsis precession occurs when the spacetime sufficiently deviates from the Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, for the small eccentric orbits, we show the negative periapsis precession occurs for $…
In this paper, we deal with the null geodesics extending from the near-horizon region out to a distant observatory in an extremal Kerr-Newman black hole background. In particular, using the matched asymptotic expansion method, we analytically solve the null geodesics near the superradiant bound in the form of algebraic equations. For the case that the photon trajectories are limited in the equatorial plane, the shifts in the azimuthal angle and time are obtained.
The superradiant instability modes of ultralight massive vector bosons are studied for weakly charged rotating black holes in Einstein--Maxwell gravity (the Kerr--Newman solution) and low-energy heterotic string theory (the Kerr--Sen black hole). We show that in both these cases, the corresponding massive vector (Proca) equations can be fully separated, exploiting the hidden symmetry present in these spacetimes. The resultant ordinary differential equations are solved numerically to find the most unstable modes of the Proca field in the two backgrounds and compared to the vacuum (Kerr black ho…
We analyse the superradiant stability of braneworld extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive scalar perturbation. These black hole solutions differ from their four dimensional counterpart by the presence of a tidal charge, which unlike electric charge, can take both positive and negative values and carries the signature of extra dimensions. We consider the perturbation of the brane geometry by a massive scalar field. From the radial equation of motion of the scalar field, we have found the effective potential felt by the field. For superradiant stability, there should not be any…
Using the Newman-Penrose formalism we study the characteristic initial value problem in vacuum General Relativity. We work in a gauge suggested by Stewart, and following the strategy taken in the work of Luk, demonstrate local existence of solutions in a neighbourhood of the set on which data are given. These data are given on intersecting null hypersurfaces. Existence near their intersection is achieved by combining the observation that the field equations are symmetric hyperbolic in this gauge with the results of Rendall. To obtain existence all the way along the null-hypersurfaces themselve…
It was investigated recently, with the aim of testing the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, whether an extremal Kerr black hole can be converted into a naked singularity by interaction with a massless classical Dirac test field, and it was found that this is possible. We generalize this result to electrically and magnetically charged rotating extremal black holes (i.e. extremal dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes) and massive Dirac test fields, allowing magnetically or electrically uncharged or nonrotating black holes and the massless Dirac field as special cases. We show that the possibility of t…
In electrovacuum stationary, asymptotically flat black holes in scalar-tensor theories of gravity are described by the Kerr-Newman family of solutions, just as in general relativity. We show that there exist two mechanisms which can render Kerr black holes unstable when matter is present in the vicinity of the black hole, as this induces an effective mass for the scalar. The first mechanism is a tachyonic instability that appears when the effective mass squared is negative, triggering the development of scalar hair --- a black hole version of "spontaneous scalarization". The second instability…
It is known that a massive charged scalar field can trigger a superradiant instability in the background of a Kerr-Newman black hole. In this paper, we present a numerical study of such an instability by using the continued fraction method. It is shown that for given a black hole, the unstable scalar mode with a specific azimuthal index $m$ only occurs in a finite region in the parameter space of the scalar field. The maximum mass of the scalar cloud is exactly the upper bound of the mass of the unstable modes. We show that due to the electromagnetic interaction between the scalar field and th…
Magnetic fields surrounding spinning black holes can confine radiation and trigger superradiant instabilities. To investigate this effect, we perform the first fully-consistent linear analysis of the Ernst spacetime, an exact solution of the Einstein--Maxwell equations describing a black hole immersed in a uniform magnetic field $B$. In the limit in which the black-hole mass vanishes, the background reduces to the marginally stable Melvin spacetime. The presence of an event horizon introduces a small dissipative term, resulting in a set of long-lived -- or unstable -- modes. We provide a simpl…
Scalar and gravitational perturbations on Kerr-anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) black holes have been addressed in the literature and have been shown to exhibit a rich phenomenology. In this paper we complete the analysis of bosonic fields on this background by studying Maxwell perturbations, focusing on superradiant instabilities and vector clouds. For this purpose, we solve the Teukolsky equations numerically, imposing the boundary conditions we have proposed in\cite{Wang:2015goa} for the radial Teukolsky equation. As found therein, two Robin boundary conditions can be imposed for Maxwell fields on…
The Weak Gravity Conjecture arises from the requirement that it be possible for all (classically stable) extremal black holes to decay. The ``black hole version'' of the conjecture requires that it should be possible for this to occur through the emission of smaller black holes. We consider this version in the case of extremal AdS$_4$-Kerr-Newman black holes which are stable against a superradiant instability. One finds that the emitted black hole must be rather exotic, having an ``angular horizon'' analogous to the more familiar (radial) horizon.
In this paper we revisit the tunneling spectrum of a charged and rotating black hole--Kerr-Newman black hole by using Parikh and Wilczek's tunneling method and get the most general result compared with the works [9, 10]. We find an ambiguity in Parikh and Wilczek's tunneling method, and give a reasonable description. We use this general spectrum to discuss the information recovery based on the Refs. [11-13]. For the tunneling spectrum we obtained, there exit correlations between sequential Hawking radiations, information can be carried out by such correlations, and the entropy is conserved dur…
We consider a superradiance effect around rotating dilatonic black holes. We analyze two cases: one is an exact solution with the coupling constant $α=\sqrt{3}$, which effective action is reduced from the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, and the other is a slowly rotating dilatonic black holes with arbitrary coupling constant. We find that there exists a critical value ($α\sim 1$), which is predicted from a superstring model, and the superradiant emission rate with coupling larger than the critical value becomes much higher than the Kerr-Newman case ($α=0$) in the maximally charged limit. Co…

The coupling between scalar and vector fields has a long and interesting history. Axions are one key possibility to solve the strong CP problem and axion-like particles could be one solution to the dark matter puzzle. Given the nature of the coupling, and the universality of free fall, nontrivial important effects are expected in regions where gravity is strong. Here, we show that i. A background EM field induces an axionic instability in flat space, for large enough electric fields. Conversely, a homogeneous harmonic axion field induces an instability in the Maxwell sector. When carried over …
We present a first-principles derivation of the main results of the Kerr/CFT correspondence and its extensions using only tools from gravity and quantum field theory. Firstly, we review properties of extremal black holes with in particular the construction of an asymptotic Virasoro symmetry in the near-horizon limit. The entropy of extremal spinning or charged black holes is shown to match with a chiral half of Cardy's formula. Secondly, we show how a thermal 2-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is relevant to reproduce the dynamics of near-superradiant probes around near-extremal black …

This thesis presents recent studies on test scalar and vector fields around black holes. It is separated in two parts according to the asymptotic properties of the spacetime under study. In the first part, we investigate scalar and Proca fields on an asymptotically flat background. For the Proca field, we obtain a complete set of equations of motion in higher dimensional spherically symmetric backgrounds. These equations are solved numerically, both to compute Hawking radiation spectra and quasi-bound states. In the former case, we carry out a precise study of the longitudinal degrees of freed…
We consider the case of rotating black holes in a dark-matter-emulating theory of gravity called MOG. The latter introduces a gravitational vector field with an associated gravitational charge proportional to the black hole mass and a scalar field in place of the gravitational constant. The resulting black hole metrics resemble the Kerr-Newman geometry and enjoy superradiant scattering. MOG, however, presents important new features. By studying the scattering of a scalar field, we show that there is a marked reduction of the critical frequency of mode amplification. This corresponds to saying …
The evolution of black holes in "confining boxes" is interesting for a number of reasons, particularly because it mimics the global structure of Anti-de Sitter geometries. These are non-globally hyperbolic space-times and the Cauchy problem may only be well defined if the initial data is supplemented by boundary conditions at the time-like conformal boundary. Here, we explore the active role that boundary conditions play in the evolution of a bulk black hole system, by imprisoning a black hole binary in a box with mirror-like boundary conditions. We are able to follow the post-merger dynamics …
