Process visualizations of data from manufacturing execution systems (MESs) provide the ability to generate valuable insights for improved decision-making. Industry 4.0 is awakening a digital transformation where advanced analytics and visualizations are critical. Exploiting MESs with data-driven strategies can have a major impact on business outcomes. The advantages of employing process visualizations are demonstrated through an application to real-world data. Visualizations, such as dashboards, enable the user to examine the performance of a production line at a high level. Furthermore, the addition of interactivity facilitates the user to customize the data they want to observe. Evidence of process variability between shifts and days of the week can be investigated with the goal of optimizing production.
This paper presents development of a smart sensor dashboard for Industry 4.0 encompassing both 2D and 3D visualization modules. In 2D module, we described physical connections among sensors and visualization modules and rendering data on 2D screen. A user study was presented where participants answered a few questions using four types of graphs. We analyzed eye gaze patterns in screen, number of correct answers and response time for all the four graphs. For 3D module, we developed a VR digital twin for sensor data visualization. A user study was presented evaluating the effect of different fee…
Many professional services are provided through text and voice systems, from voice calls over the internet to messaging and emails. There is a growing need for both individuals and organizations to understand these online conversations better and find actionable insights. One method that allows the user to explore insights is to build intuitive and rich visualizations that illustrate the content of the conversation. In this paper, we present a systematic survey of the various methods of visualizing a conversation and research papers involving interactive visualizations and human participants. …
Dirty data and deceptive design practices can undermine, invert, or invalidate the purported messages of charts and graphs. These failures can arise silently: a conclusion derived from a particular visualization may look plausible unless the analyst looks closer and discovers an issue with the backing data, visual specification, or their own assumptions. We term such silent but significant failures "visualization mirages". We describe a conceptual model of mirages and show how they can be generated at every stage of the visual analytics process. We adapt a methodology from software testing, "m…
Event sequence data is increasingly available. Many business operations are supported by information systems that record transactions, events, state changes, message exchanges, and so forth. This observation is equally valid for various industries, including production, logistics, healthcare, financial services, education, to name but a few. The variety of application areas explains that techniques for event sequence data analysis have been developed rather independently in different fields of computer science. Most prominent are contributions from information visualization and from process mi…
This paper conveys the importance of using suitable data visualizations for electrical energy consumption and the effect it carries on reducing said consumption. Data visualization tools construct an important pillar in energy micro-moments, i.e., the concept of providing the right information at the right time in the right way for a specific power consumer. Such behavioral change can be triggered with the help of good recommendations and suitable visualizations to convey the right message. A questionnaire is built as a mobile application to evaluate different groups of conventional and novel …
We evaluate several augmentations to the choropleth map to convey additional information, including glyphs, 3D, cartograms, juxtaposed maps, and shading methods. While choropleth maps are a common method used to represent societal data, with multivariate data they can impede as much as improve understanding. In particular large, low population density regions often dominate the map and can mislead the viewer as to the message conveyed. Our results highlight the potential of 3D choropleth maps as well as the low accuracy of choropleth map tasks with multivariate data. We also introduce and eval…
Dynamically typed programming languages are popular in education and the software industry. While presenting a low barrier to entry, they suffer from run-time type errors and longer-term problems in code quality and maintainability. Statically typed languages, while showing strength in these aspects, lack in learnability and ease of use. In particular, fixing type errors poses challenges to both novice users and experts. Further, compiler-type error messages are presented in a static way that is biased toward the first occurrence of the error in the program code. To help users resolve such typ…
We introduce Artifact-Based Rendering (ABR), a framework of tools, algorithms, and processes that makes it possible to produce real, data-driven 3D scientific visualizations with a visual language derived entirely from colors, lines, textures, and forms created using traditional physical media or found in nature. A theory and process for ABR is presented to address three current needs: (i) designing better visualizations by making it possible for non-programmers to rapidly design and critique many alternative data-to-visual mappings; (ii) expanding the visual vocabulary used in scientific visu…
Since 2016, we have witnessed the tremendous growth of artificial intelligence+visualization (AI+VIS) research. However, existing survey papers on AI+VIS focus on visual analytics and information visualization, not scientific visualization (SciVis). In this paper, we survey related deep learning (DL) works in SciVis, specifically in the direction of DL4SciVis: designing DL solutions for solving SciVis problems. To stay focused, we primarily consider works that handle scalar and vector field data but exclude mesh data. We classify and discuss these works along six dimensions: domain setting, re…
Current robot interfaces such as teach pendants and 2D screen displays used for task visualization and interaction often seem unintuitive and limited in terms of information flow. This compromises task efficiency as interacting with the interface can distract the user from the task at hand. Augmented Reality (AR) technology offers the capability to create visually rich displays and intuitive interaction elements in situ. In recent years, AR has shown promising potential to enable effective human-robot interaction. We introduce ARviz - a versatile, extendable AR visualization platform built for…

While narrative visualization has been used successfully in various applications to communicate scientific data in the format of a story to a general audience, the same has not been true for medical data. There are only a few exceptions that present tabular medical data to non-experts. However, a key component of medical visualization is the interactive analysis of 3D data, such as 3D models of anatomical structures, which were rarely included in narrative visualizations so far. In this design study, we investigate how neurological disease data can be communicated through narrative visualizati…
We present a parallel visualization algorithm for the illustrative rendering of depth-dependent stylized dense tube data at interactive frame rates. While this computation could be efficiently performed on a GPU device, we target a parallel framework to enable it to be efficiently running on an ordinary multi-core CPU platform which is much more available than GPUs for common users. Our approach is to map the depth information in each tube onto each of the visual dimensions of shape, color, texture, value, and size on the basis of Bertin's semiology theory. The purpose is to enable more legibl…
Timelines are common visualizations to represent and manipulate temporal data, from historical events storytelling to animation authoring. However, timeline visualizations rarely consider spatio-temporal 3D data (e.g. mesh or volumetric models) directly, which are typically explored using 3D visualizers only displaying one time-step at a time. In this paper, leveraging the increased workspace and 3D interaction capabilities of virtual reality, we propose to use timelines for the visualization of 3D temporal data to support exploration and analysis. First, we propose a timeline design space for…
