Remote sensing (RS) images are usually stored in compressed format to reduce the storage size of the archives. Thus, existing content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems in RS require decoding images before applying CBIR (which is computationally demanding in the case of large-scale CBIR problems). To address this problem, in this paper, we present a joint framework that simultaneously learns RS image compression and indexing. Thus, it eliminates the need for decoding RS images before applying CBIR. The proposed framework is made up of two modules. The first module compresses RS images based on an auto-encoder architecture. The second module produces hash codes with a high discrimination capability by employing soft pairwise, bit-balancing and classification loss functions. We also introduce a two stage learning strategy with gradient manipulation techniques to obtain image representations that are compatible with both RS image indexing and compression. Experimental results show the efficacy of the proposed framework when compared to widely used approaches in RS. The code of the proposed framework is available at https://git.tu-berlin.de/rsim/RS-JCIF.
This paper presents a novel multi-attention driven system that jointly exploits Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) in the context of multi-label remote sensing (RS) image classification. The proposed system consists of four main modules. The first module aims to extract preliminary local descriptors of RS image bands that can be associated to different spatial resolutions. To this end, we introduce a K-Branch CNN, in which each branch extracts descriptors of image bands that have the same spatial resolution. The second module aims to model spatial relationshi…

Compression artifacts reduction (CAR) is a challenging problem in the field of remote sensing. Most recent deep learning based methods have demonstrated superior performance over the previous hand-crafted methods. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end one-two-one (OTO) network, to combine different deep models, i.e., summation and difference models, to solve the CAR problem. Particularly, the difference model motivated by the Laplacian pyramid is designed to obtain the high frequency information, while the summation model aggregates the low frequency information. We provide an in-depth inves…

To reduce the storage requirements, remote sensing (RS) images are usually stored in compressed format. Existing scene classification approaches using deep neural networks (DNNs) require to fully decompress the images, which is a computationally demanding task in operational applications. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a novel approach to achieve scene classification in JPEG 2000 compressed RS images. The proposed approach consists of two main steps: i) approximation of the finer resolution sub-bands of reversible biorthogonal wavelet filters used in JPEG 2000; and ii) charact…

Visual question answering (VQA) has recently been introduced to remote sensing to make information extraction from overhead imagery more accessible to everyone. VQA considers a question (in natural language, therefore easy to formulate) about an image and aims at providing an answer through a model based on computer vision and natural language processing methods. As such, a VQA model needs to jointly consider visual and textual features, which is frequently done through a fusion step. In this work, we study three different fusion methodologies in the context of VQA for remote sensing and analy…

Destriping is a classical problem in remote sensing image processing. Although considerable effort has been made to remove stripes, few of the existing methods can eliminate stripe noise with arbitrary orientations. This situation makes the removal of oblique stripes in the higher-level remote sensing products become an unfinished and urgent issue. To overcome the challenging problem, we propose a novel destriping model which is self-adjusted to different orientations of stripe noise. First of all, the oriented variation model is designed to accomplish the stripe orientation approximation. In …

The Siamese network is becoming the mainstream in change detection of remote sensing images (RSI). However, in recent years, the development of more complicated structure, module and training processe has resulted in the cumbersome model, which hampers their application in large-scale RSI processing. To this end, this paper proposes an extremely lightweight Siamese network (LSNet) for RSI change detection, which replaces standard convolution with depthwise separable atrous convolution, and removes redundant dense connections, retaining only valid feature flows while performing Siamese feature …

Hashing methods have been recently found very effective in retrieval of remote sensing (RS) images due to their computational efficiency and fast search speed. The traditional hashing methods in RS usually exploit hand-crafted features to learn hash functions to obtain binary codes, which can be insufficient to optimally represent the information content of RS images. To overcome this problem, in this paper we introduce a metric-learning based hashing network, which learns: 1) a semantic-based metric space for effective feature representation; and 2) compact binary hash codes for fast archive …

Visual question answering (VQA) for remote sensing scene has great potential in intelligent human-computer interaction system. Although VQA in computer vision has been widely researched, VQA for remote sensing data (RSVQA) is still in its infancy. There are two characteristics that need to be specially considered for the RSVQA task. 1) No object annotations are available in RSVQA datasets, which makes it difficult for models to exploit informative region representation; 2) There are questions with clearly different difficulty levels for each image in the RSVQA task. Directly training a model w…

With the rapid development of spaceborne imaging techniques, object detection in optical remote sensing imagery has drawn much attention in recent decades. While many advanced works have been developed with powerful learning algorithms, the incomplete feature representation still cannot meet the demand for effectively and efficiently handling image deformations, particularly objective scaling and rotation. To this end, we propose a novel object detection framework, called optical remote sensing imagery detector (ORSIm detector), integrating diverse channel features extraction, feature learning…
We present an end-to-end image compression system based on compressive sensing. The presented system integrates the conventional scheme of compressive sampling and reconstruction with quantization and entropy coding. The compression performance, in terms of decoded image quality versus data rate, is shown to be comparable with JPEG and significantly better at the low rate range. We study the parameters that influence the system performance, including (i) the choice of sensing matrix, (ii) the trade-off between quantization and compression ratio, and (iii) the reconstruction algorithms. We prop…
An increasing share of image and video content is analyzed by machines rather than viewed by humans, and therefore it becomes relevant to optimize codecs for such applications where the analysis is performed remotely. Unfortunately, conventional coding tools are challenging to specialize for machine tasks as they were originally designed for human perception. However, neural network based codecs can be jointly trained end-to-end with any convolutional neural network (CNN)-based task model. In this paper, we propose to study an end-to-end framework enabling efficient image compression for remot…

With the rapid development of Remote Sensing acquisition techniques, there is a need to scale and improve processing tools to cope with the observed increase of both data volume and richness. Among popular techniques in remote sensing, Deep Learning gains increasing interest but depends on the quality of the training data. Therefore, this paper presents recent Deep Learning approaches for fine or coarse land cover semantic segmentation estimation. Various 2D architectures are tested and a new 3D model is introduced in order to jointly process the spatial and spectral dimensions of the data. Su…
In order to save the memory, we propose a miniaturization method for neural network to reduce the parameter quantity existed in remote sensing (RS) image semantic segmentation model. The compact convolution optimization method is first used for standard U-Net to reduce the weights quantity. With the purpose of decreasing model performance loss caused by miniaturization and based on the characteristics of remote sensing image, fewer down-samplings and improved cascade atrous convolution are then used to improve the performance of the miniaturized U-Net. Compared with U-Net, our proposed Micro-N…
Compressed sensing (CS) is an innovative technique allowing to represent signals through a small number of their linear projections. In this paper we address the application of CS to the scenario of progressive acquisition of 2D visual signals in a line-by-line fashion. This is an important setting which encompasses diverse systems such as flatbed scanners and remote sensing imagers. The use of CS in such setting raises the problem of reconstructing a very high number of samples, as are contained in an image, from their linear projections. Conventional reconstruction algorithms, whose complexi…
Deep learning has become in recent years a cornerstone tool fueling key innovations in the industry, such as autonomous driving. To attain good performances, the neural network architecture used for a given application must be chosen with care. These architectures are often handcrafted and therefore prone to human biases and sub-optimal selection. Neural Architecture Search (NAS) is a framework introduced to mitigate such risks by jointly optimizing the network architectures and its weights. Albeit its novelty, it was applied on complex tasks with significant results - e.g. semantic image segm…

We deal with the problem of generating textual captions from optical remote sensing (RS) images using the notion of deep reinforcement learning. Due to the high inter-class similarity in reference sentences describing remote sensing data, jointly encoding the sentences and images encourages prediction of captions that are semantically more precise than the ground truth in many cases. To this end, we introduce an Actor Dual-Critic training strategy where a second critic model is deployed in the form of an encoder-decoder RNN to encode the latent information corresponding to the original and gen…

Most Deep Learning (DL) based Compressed Sensing (DCS) algorithms adopt a single neural network for signal reconstruction, and fail to jointly consider the influences of the sampling operation for reconstruction. In this paper, we propose unified framework, which jointly considers the sampling and reconstruction process for image compressive sensing based on well-designed cascade neural networks. Two sub-networks, which are the sampling sub-network and the reconstruction sub-network, are included in the proposed framework. In the sampling sub-network, an adaptive full connected layer instead o…
Undirected graphical models have been successfully used to jointly model the spatial and the spectral dependencies in earth observing hyperspectral images. They produce less noisy, smooth, and spatially coherent land cover maps and give top accuracies on many datasets. Moreover, they can easily be combined with other state-of-the-art approaches, such as deep learning. This has made them an essential tool for remote sensing researchers and practitioners. However, graphical models have not been easily accessible to the larger remote sensing community as they are not discussed in standard remote …
Compressed Sensing (CS) is suitable for remote acquisition of hyperspectral images for earth observation, since it could exploit the strong spatial and spectral correlations, llowing to simplify the architecture of the onboard sensors. Solutions proposed so far tend to decouple spatial and spectral dimensions to reduce the complexity of the reconstruction, not taking into account that onboard sensors progressively acquire spectral rows rather than acquiring spectral channels. For this reason, we propose a novel progressive CS architecture based on separate sensing of spectral rows and joint re…
