Many aspects concerning the formation of spiral and disc galaxies remain unresolved, despite their discovery and detailed study over the past $150$ years. As such, we present the results of an observational search for proto-spiral galaxies and their earliest formation, including the discovery of a significant population of spiral-like and clumpy galaxies at $z>1$ in deep \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} CANDELS imaging. We carry out a detailed analysis of this population, characterising their number density evolution, masses, star formation rates and sizes. Overall, we find a surprisingly high overall number density of massive $M_{*} >10^{10}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ spiral-like galaxies (including clumpy spirals) at $z > 1$ of $0.18\,{\rm per}\, \mathrm{arcmin}^{-2}$. We measure and characterise the decline in the number of these systems at higher redshift using simulations to correct for redshift effects in identifications, finding that the true fraction of spiral-like galaxies grows at lower redshifts as $\sim$ $(1+z)^{-1.1}$. This is such that the absolute numbers of spirals increases by a factor of $\sim 10$ between $z = 2.5$ and $z = 0.5$. We also demonstrate that these spiral-like systems have large sizes at $z>2$, and high star formation rates, above the main-sequence, These galaxies represent a major mode of galaxy formation in the early universe, perhaps driven by the spiral structure itself. We finally discuss the origin of these systems, including their likely formation through gas accretion and minor mergers, but conclude that major mergers are an unlikely cause.
We present the results of CANDELSz7, an ESO large program aimed at confirming spectroscopically a homogeneous sample of z~6 and z~7 star forming galaxies. The candidates were selected in the GOODS-South, UDS and COSMOS fields using the official CANDELS catalogs based on H160-band detections. Standard color criteria, which were tailored depending on the ancillary multi-wavelength data available for each field, were applied to select more than 160 candidate galaxies at z~6 and z~7. Deep medium resolution FORS2 spectroscopic observations were then conducted with integration times ranging from 12 …
We identify 4 unusually bright (H < 25.5) galaxies from HST and Spitzer CANDELS data with probable redshifts z ~ 7-9. These identifications include the brightest-known galaxies to date at z > 7.5. As Y-band observations are not available over the full CANDELS program to perform a standard Lyman-break selection of z > 7 galaxies, we employ an alternate strategy using deep Spitzer/IRAC data. We identify z ~ 7.1 - 9.1 galaxies by selecting z >~ 6 galaxies from the HST CANDELS data that show quite red IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] colors, indicating strong [OIII]+Hbeta lines in the 4.5 micron band. This select…
We investigate the median flattening of galaxies at $0.2<z<4.0$ in all five CANDELS/3D-HST fields via the apparent axis ratio $q$. We separate the sample into bins of redshift, stellar-mass, sérsic index, size, and UVJ determined star-forming state to discover the most important drivers of the median $q$ ($q_{med}$). Quiescent galaxies at $z<1$ and $M_{*}>10^{11}M_{\odot}$ are rounder than those at lower masses, consistent with the hypothesis that they have grown significantly through dry merging. The massive quiescent galaxies at higher redshift become flatter, and are as flat as star forming…
We use CANDELS imaging, 3D-HST spectroscopy, and Chandra X-ray data to investigate if active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are preferentially fueled by violent disk instabilities funneling gas into galaxy centers at 1.3<z<2.4. We select galaxies undergoing gravitational instabilities using the number of clumps and degree of patchiness as proxies. The CANDELS visual classification system is used to identify 44 clumpy disk galaxies, along with mass-matched comparison samples of smooth and intermediate morphology galaxies. We note that, despite being being mass-matched and having similar star formation …
We search for passive galaxies at $z>3$ in the GOODS-South field, using different techniques based on photometric data, and paying attention to develop methods that are sensitive to objects that have become passive shortly before the epoch of observation. We use CANDELS HST catalogues, ultra-deep $Ks$ data and new IRAC photometry, performing spectral energy distribution fitting using models with abruptly quenched star formation histories. We then single out galaxies which are best fitted by a passively evolving model, and having only low probability $( < 5 \%)$ star-forming solutions. We verif…
Recent simulation studies suggest that the compaction of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at high redshift might be a critical process, during which the central bulge is being rapidly built, followed by quenching of the star formation. To explore dust properties of SFGs with compact morphology, we investigate the dependence of dust temperature, $T_{\rm{dust}}$, on their size and star formation activity, using a sample of massive SFGs with $\log (M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) > 10$ at $1 < z < 3$, drawn from the 3D-{\it HST}/CANDELS database in combination with deep {\it Herschel} observations. $T_{\rm{dust}…
To figure out the effect of stellar mass and local environment on morphological transformation and star formation quenching in galaxies, we use the massive ($M_* \geq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) galaxies at $0.5 \leq z \leq 2.5$ in five fields of 3D-HST/CANDELS. Based on the {\it UVJ} diagnosis and the possibility of possessing spheroid, our sample of massive galaxies are classified into four populations: quiescent early-type galaxies (qEs), quiescent late-type galaxies (qLs), star-forming early-type galaxies (sEs), and star-forming late-type galaxies (sLs). It is found that the quiescent fraction is …
Based on a large sample of massive ($M_{*}\geq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) compact galaxies at $1.0 < z < 3.0$ in five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields, we quantify the fractional abundance and comoving number density of massive compact galaxies as a function of redshift. The samples of compact quiescent galaxies (cQGs) and compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) are constructed by various selection criteria of compact galaxies in literatures, and the effect of compactness definition on abundance estimate is proved to be remarkable, particularly for the cQGs and cSFGs at high redshifts. Regardless of the compactne…
Understanding how bulges grow in galaxies is critical step towards unveiling the link between galaxy morphology and star-formation. To do so, it is necessary to decompose large sample of galaxies at different epochs into their main components (bulges and disks). This is particularly challenging, especially at high redshifts, where galaxies are poorly resolved. This work presents a catalog of bulge-disk decompositions of the surface brightness profiles of ~17.600 H-band selected galaxies in the CANDELS fields (F160W<23, 0<z<2) in 4 to 7 filters covering a spectral range of 430-1600nm. This is t…
We present an ALMA survey of dust continuum emission in a sample of 70 galaxies in the redshift range z=2-5 selected from the CANDELS GOODS-S field. Multi-Epoch Abundance Matching (MEAM) is used to define potential progenitors of a z = 0 galaxy of stellar mass 1.5 10^11 M_sun. Gas masses are derived from the 850um luminosity. Ancillary data from the CANDELS GOODS-S survey are used to derive the gas mass fractions. The results at z<=3 are mostly in accord with expectations: The detection rates are 75% for the z=2 redshift bin, 50% for the z=3 bin and 0% for z>=4. The average gas mass fraction f…
To explore the evolutionary connection among red, green, and blue galaxy populations, based on a sample of massive ($M_* > 10^{10} M_{\odot} $) galaxies at 0.5<z<2.5 in five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields, we investigate the dust content, morphologies, structures, AGN fractions, and environments of these three galaxy populations. Green valley galaxies are found to have intermediate dust attenuation, and reside in the middle of the regions occupied by quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the UVJ diagram. Compared with blue and red galaxy populations at z<2, green galaxies have intermediate compactness…
Studying the internal processes of individual galaxies at kilo-parsec scales is crucial in enhancing our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution processes. In this work, we investigate the distribution of star formation rate (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), and dust attenuation across individual galaxies for a sample of 32 galaxies selected from the MUSE-Wide Survey at 0.1 $< \textit{z} <$ 0.42 with a dynamic range in stellar masses between $10^{7.7}$ and $10^{10.3}$ M$_{\odot}$. We take advantage of the high spatial resolution of the MUSE integral-field spectrograph and measure reliable sp…
Recently, a small sample of six $z\sim9-10$ candidates was discovered in CANDELS that are $\sim10-20\times$ more luminous than any of the previous $z\sim9-10$ galaxies identified over the HUDF/XDF and CLASH fields. We measure the sizes of these candidates to map out the size evolution of galaxies from the earliest observable times. Their sizes are also used to provide a valuable constraint on whether these unusual galaxy candidates are at high redshift. Using galfit to derive sizes from the CANDELS F160W images of these candidates, we find a mean size of 0.13$\pm$0.02" (or 0.5$\pm$0.1 kpc at $…
We report the results of an expanded search for z~9-10 candidates over the ~883 arcmin^2 CANDELS+ERS fields. This study adds 147 arcmin^2 to the search area we consider over the CANDELS COSMOS, UDS, and EGS fields, while expanding our selection to include sources with bluer J_{125}-H_{160} colors than our previous J_{125}-H_{160}>0.5 mag selection. In searching for new z~9-10 candidates, we make full use of all available HST, Spitzer/IRAC, and ground-based imaging data. As a result of our expanded search and use of broader color criteria, 3 new candidate z~9-10 galaxies are identified. We also…
To explore the effect of environment on star-formation and morphological transformation of high-redshift galaxies, we present a robust estimation of localized galaxy overdensity using a density estimator within the Bayesian probability framework. The maps of environmental overdensity at $0.5< z< 2.5$ are constructed for the five CANDELS fields. In general, the quiescent fraction increases with overdensity and stellar mass. Stellar mass dominates the star formation quenching for massive galaxies, while environmental quenching tends to be more effective for the low-mass galaxies at $0.5< z < 1$. …
We examine a sample of 1495 galaxies in the CANDELS fields to determine the evolution of two component galaxies, including bulges and discs, within massive galaxies at the epoch 1 < z < 3 when the Hubble sequence forms. We fit all of our galaxies' light profiles with a single Sérsic fit, as well as with a combination of exponential and Sérsic profiles. The latter is done in order to describe a galaxy with an inner and an outer component, or bulge and disc component. We develop and use three classification methods (visual, F-test and the RFF) to separate our sample into 1-component galaxies (di…
To investigate the effects of environment in the quenching phase, we study the empirical relations for green valley (GV) galaxies between overdensity and other physical properties (i.e., effective radius $r_{\rm e}$, Sérsic indices $n$, and specific star formation rate sSFR). Based on five 3D-{\it HST}/CANDELS fields, we construct a large sample of 2126 massive ($M_{\star} > 10^{10} M_{\sun}$) GV galaxies at $0.5<z<2.5$ and split it into the higher overdensity quarter and the lower overdensity quarter. The results shows that GV galaxies in denser environment have higher $n$ values and lower sS…
We model the projected b/a-log a distributions of CANDELS main sequence star-forming galaxies, where a (b) is the semi-major (semi-minor) axis of the galaxy images. We find that smaller-a galaxies are rounder at all stellar masses M and redshifts, so we include a when analyzing b/a distributions. Approximating intrinsic shapes of the galaxies as triaxial ellipsoids and assuming a multivariate normal distribution of galaxy size and two shape parameters, we construct their intrinsic shape and size distributions to obtain the fractions of prolate, oblate and spheroidal galaxies in each redshift a…
Utilizing a BzK-selected technique, we obtain 14550 star-forming galaxies (sBzKs) and 1763 passive galaxies (pBzKs) at z~2 from the K-selected (K<22.5) catalog in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. The differential number counts of sBzKs and pBzKs are consistent with the results from the literature. Compared to the observed results, semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution provide too few (many) galaxies at high (low)-mass end. Moreover, we find that the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass of sBzKs follow the relation of main sequence. Based on the HST/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3)…
Despite significant efforts in the recent years, the physical processes responsible for the formation of passive galaxies through cosmic time remain unclear. The shape and evolution of the Stellar Mass Function (SMF) give an insight into these mechanisms. Taking advantage from the CANDELS and the deep Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) programs, we estimated the SMF of total, star-forming and passive galaxies from z=0.25 to z=2.75 to unprecedented depth, and focus on the latter population. The density of passive galaxies underwent a significant evolution over the last 11 Gyr. They account for 60% of…
Distant star-forming galaxies show a correlation between their star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses, and this has deep implications for galaxy formation. Here, we present a study on the evolution of the slope and scatter of the SFR-stellar mass relation for galaxies at $3.5\leq z\leq 6.5$ using multi-wavelength photometry in GOODS-S from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and Spitzer Extended Deep Survey. We describe an updated, Bayesian spectral-energy distribution fitting method that incorporates effects of nebular line emission, star format…
We present a study on structures and physical properties of massive ($M_* >10^{10} M_{\sun} $) compact galaxies at $1.0<z<2.0$ in five 3D--{\it HST}/CANDELS fields. Compared with the extended star-forming galaxies (eSFGs), compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) are found to have the lower level of star formation, and mainly distribute in the quiescent region of the {\it UVJ} diagram. The distributions of dust attenuation and S{é}rsic index support that the progenitors of cQGs are cSFGs, and cSFGs are at a transitional phase between eSFGs and cQGs. The prevalence of X-ray selected AGNs ($\sim 28…
The selection of red, passive galaxies in the early Universe is very challenging, especially beyond z~3, and it is crucial to constrain theoretical modelling of the processes responsible for their rapid assembly and abrupt shut-down of the star formation. We present here the analysis of ALMA archival observations of 26 out of the 30 galaxies in the deep CANDELS GOODS-South field that we identified as passive at z~3-5 by means of a careful and conservative SED fitting analysis. ALMA data are used to verify the potential contamination from red, dusty but star--forming sources that could enter th…
Several mechanisms for the transformation of blue star-forming to red quiescent galaxies have been proposed, and the green valley (GV) galaxies amid them are widely accepted in a transitional phase. Thus, comparing the morphological and environmental differences of the GV galaxies with early-type disks (ETDs; bulge dominated and having a disk) and late-type disks (LTDs; disk dominated) is suitable for distinguishing the corresponding quenching mechanisms. A large population of massive ($M_* \geqslant 10^{10}M_\odot$) GV galaxies at $0.5 \leqslant z \leqslant 1.5$ in 3D-HST/CANDELS is selected …
We present quantified visual morphologies of approximately 48,000 galaxies observed in three Hubble Space Telescope legacy fields by the Cosmic And Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and classified by participants in the Galaxy Zoo project. 90% of galaxies have z < 3 and are observed in rest-frame optical wavelengths by CANDELS. Each galaxy received an average of 40 independent classifications, which we combine into detailed morphological information on galaxy features such as clumpiness, bar instabilities, spiral structure, and merger and tidal signatures. We apply a con…
Using high-resolution HST/Wide Field Camera 3 F125W imaging from the CANDELS-COSMOS field, we report the the structural and morphological properties of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) at $z\sim1$. Based on the UVJ color criteria, we separate EROs into two types: old passive galaxies (OGs) and dusty star-forming galaxies (DGs). For a given stellar mass, we find that the mean size of OGs (DGs) is smaller by a factor of $\sim2$ (1.5) than that of present-day early-type (late-type) galaxies at rest-frame optical wavelength. We derive the average effective radii of OGs and DGs, corresponding to $2.09\…
A fundamental feature of galaxies is their structure, yet we are just now understanding the evolution of structural properties in quantitative ways. As such, we explore the quantitative non-parametric structural evolution of 16,778 galaxies up to $z\sim3$ in all five CANDELS fields, the largest collection of high resolution images of distant galaxies to date. Our goal is to investigate how the structure, as opposed to size, surface brightness, or mass, changes with time. In particular, we investigate how the concentration and asymmetry of light evolve in the rest-frame optical. To interpret ou…
We determine the intrinsic, 3-dimensional shape distribution of star-forming galaxies at 0<z<2.5, as inferred from their observed projected axis ratios. In the present-day universe star-forming galaxies of all masses 1e9 - 1e11 Msol are predominantly thin, nearly oblate disks, in line with previous studies. We now extend this to higher redshifts, and find that among massive galaxies (M* > 1e10 Msol) disks are the most common geometric shape at all z < 2. Lower-mass galaxies at z>1 possess a broad range of geometric shapes: the fraction of elongated (prolate) galaxies increases toward higher re…
We investigate the rest-frame Ultraviolet (UV, $λ\sim2000$Å) surface brightness (SB) evolution of galaxies up to $z\sim6$ using a variety of deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging. UV SB is a measure of the density of emission from mostly young stars and correlates with an unknown combination of star formation rate, initial mass function, cold gas mass density, dust attenuation, and the size evolution of galaxies. In addition to physical effects, the SB is, unlike magnitude, a more direct way in which a galaxy's detectability is determined. We find a very strong evolution in the intrinsic SB dist…
We investigate the environmental quenching of galaxies, especially those with stellar masses (M*)$<10^{9.5} M_\odot$, beyond the local universe. Essentially all local low-mass quenched galaxies (QGs) are believed to live close to massive central galaxies, which is a demonstration of environmental quenching. We use CANDELS data to test {\it whether or not} such a dwarf QG--massive central galaxy connection exists beyond the local universe. To this purpose, we only need a statistically representative, rather than a complete, sample of low-mass galaxies, which enables our study to $z\gtrsim1.5$. …
We reliably extend the stellar mass-size relation over $0.2\leq z \leq2$ to low stellar mass galaxies by combining the depth of Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) with the large volume covered by CANDELS. Galaxies are simultaneously modelled in multiple bands using the tools developed by the MegaMorph project, allowing robust size (i.e., half-light radius) estimates even for small, faint, and high redshift galaxies. We show that above 10$^7$M$_\odot$, star-forming galaxies are well represented by a single power law on the mass-size plane over our entire redshift range. Conversely, the stellar mass-s…
We explore observational and theoretical constraints on how galaxies might transition between the "star-forming main sequence" (SFMS) and varying "degrees of quiescence" out to $z=3$. Our analysis is focused on galaxies with stellar mass $M_*>10^{10}M_{\odot}$, and is enabled by GAMA and CANDELS observations, a semi-analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation, and a cosmological hydrodynamical "zoom in" simulation with momentum-driven AGN feedback. In both the observations and the SAM, transition galaxies tend to have intermediate Sérsic indices, half-light radii, and surface stellar mass densiti…
Galaxies with stellar masses near M* contain the majority of stellar mass in the universe, and are therefore of special interest in the study of galaxy evolution. The Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) have present day stellar masses near M*, at 5x10^10 Msol (MW-mass) and 10^11 Msol (M31-mass). We study the typical progenitors of these galaxies using ZFOURGE, a deep medium-band near-IR imaging survey, which is sensitive to the progenitors of these galaxies out to z~3. We use abundance-matching techniques to identify the main progenitors of these galaxies at higher redshifts. We measure the evo…
We derive the total cold gas, atomic hydrogen, and molecular gas masses of approximately 24 000 galaxies covering four decades in stellar mass at redshifts 0.5 < z < 3.0, taken from the CANDELS survey. Our inferences are based on the inversion of a molecular hydrogen based star formation law, coupled with a prescription to separate atomic and molecular gas. We find that: 1) there is an increasing trend between the inferred cold gas (HI and H2), HI, and H2 mass and the stellar mass of galaxies down to stellar masses of 10^8 Msun already in place at z = 3; 2) the molecular fractions of cold gas …
We use a sample of 706 galaxies, selected as [OII]$λ$3727 ([OII]) emitters in the Survey for High-$z$ Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) on the CANDELS/GOODS-N field, to study the differential attenuation of the nebular emission with respect to the stellar continuum. The sample includes only galaxies with a counterpart in the infrared and $\mathrm{log}_{10}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})$ $>$ 9, over the redshift interval 0.3 $\lesssim$ $z$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. Our methodology consists in the comparison of the star formation rates inferred from [OII] and H$α$ emission lines with a robust quantific…
In order for Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) and other Stage IV dark energy experiments (e.g., Large Synoptic Survey Telescope; LSST, and Euclid) to infer cosmological parameters not limited by systematic errors, accurate redshift measurements are needed. This accuracy can be met by using spectroscopic subsamples to calibrate the photometric redshifts for the full sample. In this work we employ the Self Organizing Map (SOM) spectroscopic sampling technique, to find the minimal number of spectra required for the WFIRST weak lensing calibration. We use galaxies from the Cosmic Asse…
We present photometric redshifts and associated probability distributions for all detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). The work makes use of the most up-to-date data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and the Taiwan ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey (TENIS) in addition to other data. We also revisit multi-wavelength counterparts for published X-ray sources from the 4Ms-CDFS and 250ks-ECDFS surveys, finding reliable counterparts for 1207 out of 1259 sources ($\sim 96\%$). Data used for photometric redshifts include intermediate-band photometry d…
We investigate the galaxy quenching process at intermediate redshift using a sample of $\sim4400$ galaxies with $M_{\ast} > 10^{9}M_{\odot}$ between redshift 0.5 and 1.0 in all five CANDELS fields. We divide this sample, using the integrated specific star formation rate (sSFR), into four sub-groups: star-forming galaxies (SFGs) above and below the ridge of the star-forming main sequence (SFMS), transition galaxies and quiescent galaxies. We study their $UVI$ ($U-V$ versus $V-I$) color gradients to infer their sSFR gradients out to twice effective radii. We show that on average both star-formin…

Although giant clumps of stars are crucial to galaxy formation and evolution, the most basic demographics of clumps are still uncertain, mainly because the definition of clumps has not been thoroughly discussed. In this paper, we study the basic demographics of clumps in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 0.5<z<3, using our proposed physical definition that UV-bright clumps are discrete star-forming regions that individually contribute more than 8% of the rest-frame UV light of their galaxies. Clumps defined this way are significantly brighter than the HII regions of nearby large spiral galaxies,…
This paper uses radial colour profiles to infer the distributions of dust, gas and star formation in z=0.4-1.4 star-forming main sequence galaxies. We start with the standard UVJ-based method to estimate dust extinction and specific star formation rate (sSFR). By replacing J with I band, a new calibration method suitable for use with ACS+WFC3 data is created (i.e. UVI diagram). Using a multi-wavelength multi-aperture photometry catalogue based on CANDELS, UVI colour profiles of 1328 galaxies are stacked in stellar mass and redshift bins. The resulting colour gradients, covering a radial range …
The formation of bars in disk galaxies is a tracer of the dynamical maturity of the population. Previous studies have found that the incidence of bars in disks decreases from the local Universe to z ~ 1, and by z > 1 simulations predict that bar features in dynamically mature disks should be extremely rare. Here we report the discovery of strong barred structures in massive disk galaxies at z ~ 1.5 in deep rest-frame optical images from CANDELS. From within a sample of 876 disk galaxies identified by visual classification in Galaxy Zoo, we identify 123 barred galaxies. Selecting a sub-sample w…
The deep, wide-area (~800-900 arcmin**2) near-infrared/WFC3/IR + Spitzer/IRAC observations over the CANDELS fields have been a remarkable resource for constraining the bright end of high redshift UV luminosity functions (LFs). However, the lack of HST 1.05-micron observations over the CANDELS fields has made it difficult to identify z~9-10 sources robustly, since such data are needed to confirm the presence of an abrupt Lyman break at 1.2 microns. We report here on the successful identification of many such z~9-10 sources from a new HST program (z9-CANDELS) that targets the highest-probability…
We search the five CANDELS fields (COSMOS, EGS, GOODS-North, GOODS-South and UDS) for passively evolving a.k.a. "red and dead" massive galaxies in the first 2 Gyr after the Big Bang, integrating and updating the work on GOODS-South presented in our previous paper. We perform SED-fitting on photometric data, with top-hat star-formation histories to model an early and abrupt quenching, and using a probabilistic approach to select only robust candidates. Using libraries without (with) spectral lines emission, starting from a total of more than 20,000 $z>3$ sources we end up with 102 (40) candidat…
We present a multi-component structural analysis of the internal structure of $1074$ high redshift massive galaxies at $1<z<3$ from the CANDELS HST Survey. In particular we examine galaxies best-fit by two structural components, and thus likely forming discs and bulges. We examine the stellar mass, star formation rates, and colours of both the inner `bulge' and outer `disc' components for these systems using SED information from the resolved ACS+WFC3 HST imaging. We find that the majority of both inner and outer components lie in the star-forming region of UVJ space ($68$ and $90$ per cent res…
We present a sample of 33 Balmer Break Galaxies (BBGs) selected as HST/F160W dropouts in the deepest CANDELS/GOODS fields ($H\gtrsim27.3$~mag) but relatively bright in {\it Spitzer}/IRAC ($[3.6],[4.5]<24.5$~mag), implying red colors (median and quartiles: $\langle H-[3.6]\rangle=3.1^{3.4}_{2.8}$\,mag). Half of these BBGs are newly identified sources. Our BBGs are massive ($\langle \log(\rm{M}/\rm{M}_\odot)\rangle=10.8$) high redshift ($\langle z\rangle=4.8$) dusty ($\langle \rm{A(V)}\rangle=2.0$~mag) galaxies. The SEDs of half of our sample indicate that they are star-forming galaxies with typ…
We present a size analysis of a sample of $\sim$ 49,000 galaxies from the CANDELS GOODS North and South fields using redshift-independent relative surface brightness metrics to determine an unbiased measure of the differential size evolution of galaxies at $1 \leq z \leq 7$. We introduce a novel method of removing foreground objects from distant galaxy ($z > 3$) images that makes use of the Lyman-break at 912Å, in what we call `2-D Lyman-Break Imaging'. The images used are in the rest-frame optical at $z < 3$ and progressively bluer bands at $z > 3$. They are therefore subject to K-correction …
Using the CANDELS photometric catalogs for the HST/ACS and WFC3, we identified massive evolved galaxies at $3 < z < 4.5$, employing three different selection methods. We find the comoving number density of these objects to be $\sim 2 \times 10^{-5}$ and $8 \times 10^{-6}Mpc^{-3}$ after correction for completeness for two redshift bins centered at $z=3.4, 4.7$. We quantify a measure of how much confidence we should have for each candidate galaxy from different selections and what are the conservative error estimates propagated into our selection. Then we compare the evolution of the correspondi…
This is the first in a series of papers examining the demographics of star-forming galaxies at $0.2<z<2.5$ in CANDELS. We study 9,100 galaxies from GOODS-S and UDS having published values of redshifts, masses, star-formation rates (SFRs), and dust attenuation ($A_V$) derived from UV-optical SED fitting. In agreement with previous works, we find that the $UVJ$ colors of a galaxy are closely correlated with its specific star-formation rate (SSFR) and $A_V$. We define rotated $UVJ$ coordinate axes, termed $S_\mathrm{SED}$ and $C_\mathrm{SED}$, that are parallel and perpendicular to the star-formi…
We investigate the differences in the stellar population properties, the structure, and the environment between massive compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) with or without active galactic nucleus (AGN) at $2<z<3$ in the five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields. In a sample of 221 massive cSFGs, we constitute the most complete AGN census so far, identifying 66 AGNs by the X-ray detection, the mid-infrared color criterion, and/or the SED fitting, while the rest (155) are non-AGNs. Further dividing these cSFGs into two redshift bins, i.e., $2<z<2.5$ and $2.5 \leq z<3$, we find that in each redshift bin the c…
We have measured the radial profiles of isophotal ellipticity ($\varepsilon$) and disky/boxy parameter A$_4$ out to radii of about three times the semi-major axes for $\sim4,600$ star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at intermediate redshifts $0.5<z<1.8$ in the CANDELS/GOODS-S and UDS fields. Based on the average size versus stellar-mass relation in each redshift bin, we divide our galaxies into Small SFGs (SSFGs), i.e., smaller than average for its mass, and Large SFGs (LSFGs), i.e., larger than average. We find that, at low masses ($M_{\ast} < 10^{10}M_{\odot}$), the SSFGs generally have nearly flat …
We derive physical properties of 10 submillimeter galaxies located in the CANDELS coverage of the GOODS-S field. The galaxies were first identified as submillimeter sources with the LABOCA bolometer and subsequently targeted for 870um continuum observation with ALMA. The high angular resolution of the ALMA imaging allows secure counterparts to be identified in the CANDELS multiband dataset. The CANDELS data provide deep photometric data from UV through near-infrared wavelengths. Using synthetic spectral energy distributions, we derive photometric redshifts, stellar masses, extinction, ages, an…
We examine the spheroid growth and star formation quenching experienced by galaxies from z~3 to the present by studying the evolution with redshift of the quiescent and spheroid-dominated fractions of galaxies from the CANDELS and GAMA surveys. We compare the observed fractions with predictions from a semi-analytic model which includes prescriptions for bulge growth and AGN feedback due to mergers and disk instabilities. We facilitate direct morphological comparison by converting our model bulge-to-total stellar mass ratios to Sersic indices. We then subdivide our population into the four quad…
We measure new estimates for the galaxy stellar mass function and star formation rates for samples of galaxies at $z \sim 4,~5,~6~\&~7$ using data in the CANDELS GOODS South field. The deep near-infrared observations allow us to construct the stellar mass function at $z \geq 6$ directly for the first time. We estimate stellar masses for our sample by fitting the observed spectral energy distributions with synthetic stellar populations, including nebular line and continuum emission. The observed UV luminosity functions for the samples are consistent with previous observations, however we find t…
We present mock catalogs created to support the interpretation of the CANDELS survey. We extract halos along past lightcones from the Bolshoi Planck dissipationless N-body simulations and populate these halos with galaxies using two different independently developed semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and the empirical model UniverseMachine. Our mock catalogs have geometries that encompass the footprints of observations associated with the five CANDELS fields. In order to allow field-to-field variance to be explored, we have created eight realizations of each field. In this paper, we pres…
We present the results from a new search for candidate galaxies at z ~ 8.5-11 discovered over the 850 arcmin^2 area probed by the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We use a photometric redshift selection including both Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope photometry to robustly identify galaxies in this epoch at F160W < 26.6. We use a detailed vetting procedure, including screening for persistence, stellar contamination, inclusion of ground-based imaging, and followup space-based imaging to build a robust sample of 11 candidate galaxies, three presented he…
Recent studies have indicated that the ratio between half-mass and half-light radii, $r_{\rm mass} / r_{\rm light}$, varies significantly as a function of stellar mass and redshift, complicating the interpretation of the ubiquitous $r_{\rm light}- M_*$ relation. To investigate, in this study we construct the light and color profiles of $\sim 3000$ galaxies at $1<z<2$ with $\log\, M_*/M_\odot > 10.25$ using $\texttt{imcascade}$, a Bayesian implementation of the Multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) technique. $\texttt{imcascade}$ flexibly represents galaxy profiles using a series of Gaussians, free of…
We examine morphology-separated color-mass diagrams to study the quenching of star formation in $\sim 100,000$ ($z\sim0$) Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and $\sim 20,000$ ($z\sim1$) Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) galaxies. To classify galaxies morphologically, we developed Galaxy Morphology Network (GaMorNet), a convolutional neural network that classifies galaxies according to their bulge-to-total light ratio. GaMorNet does not need a large training set of real data and can be applied to data sets with a range of signal-to-noise ratios and spatial re…
