Logic gates based on magnetic elements are promising candidates for the logic-in-memory applications with nonvolatile data retention, near-zero leakage and scalability. In such spin-based logic device, however, the multi-strip structure and fewer functions are obstacles to improving integration and reducing energy consumption. Here we propose a skyrmions-based single-nanotrack logic family including AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR, and XNOR which can be implemented and reconstructed by building and switching Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) chirality barrier on a racetrack memory. Besides the pinning effect of DMI chirality barrier on skyrmions, the annihilation, fusion and shunting of two skyrmions with opposite chirality are also achieved and demonstrated via local reversal of DMI, which are necessary for the design of engineer programmable logic nanotrack, transistor and complementary racetrack memory.
Skyrmion racetrack memory has a lots of potential in future non-volatile solid state devices. In general such devices require current to nucleate skyrmions via spin transfer torque (STT) effect. Further the current is also required to drive the skyrmions in the nanowire device. However the current applied during nucleation of successive skyrmions may have unwanted perturbation \emph{viz.} Joule heating and skyrmion Hall effect, on the propagation of previously generated skyrmions. Therefore new methodology is required to decouple the generation and propagation of skyrmions. Here we present a n…
Arising from emergent electromagnetic field of magnetic skyrmions due to their nontrivial topology, the skyrmion Hall effect might be a roadblock for practical applications since any longitudinal motions of skyrmions in nanotrack is accompanied by a transverse motion. A direct consequence of such an effect is easy destruction of skyrmions at the nanotrack edges during their fast motions along the nanotrack, despite their topological protection. Here we propose an entirely novel solution of completely inhibiting such skyrmion Hall effect without affecting its topological properties based on a a…
Magnetic skyrmions have potential applications in next-generation spintronics devices with ultralow energy consumption. In this work, the current-driven skyrmion motion in a narrow ferromagnetic nanotrack with voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is studied numerically. By utilizing the VCMA effect, the transport of skyrmion can be unidirectional in the nanotrack, leading to a one-way information channel. The trajectory of the skyrmion can also be modulated by periodically located VCMA gates, which protects the skyrmion from destruction by touching the track edge. In addition, the loc…
Understanding the dynamics of the magnetic skyrmion, a particle-like topologically stable spin texture, and its response dynamics to external fields are indis-pensable for the applications in spintronic devices. In this letter, the Lorentz transmis-sion electron microscopy (LTEM) was used to investigate the spin chirality of the mag-netic skyrmion bubbles (SKBs) in the centrosymmetric magnet MnNiGa at room tem-perature. The reversal of SKBs excited by the in-plane magnetic field has been revealed. Moreover, the collective behavior of interacting spin chirality can be manipulated by reversing t…
Magnetic skyrmion, a topological magnetic domain with complex non-coplanar spin texture, appears a disk-like structure in two dimensions. Exploring three-dimensional spin texture and related chirality switching has drawn enormous interests from the perspective of fundamental research. Here, the three-dimensional magnetic moment of the skyrmion bubbles in centrosymmetric Mn-Ni-Ga were reconstructed with the vector field tomography approach via Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The type of the bubbles was determined from investigating the magnetic vectors in entire space. We found that t…
The magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion-like structure but carries a zero net skyrmion number, which can be used as a building block for non-volatile information processing devices. Here, we study the dynamics of a magnetic skyrmionium driven by propagating spin waves. It is found that the skyrmionium can be effectively driven into motion by spin waves showing tiny skyrmion Hall effect, of which the mobility is much better than that of the skyrmion at the same condition. We also show that the skyrmionium mobility depends on the nanotrack width and damping coefficient, and can be controlled by a…
Skyrmions are magnetic bubbles with nontrivial topology envisioned as data bits for ultrafast and power-efficient spintronic memory and logic devices. They may be stabilized in heavy-metal/ferromagnetic/oxide trilayer systems. The skyrmion chirality is then determined by the sign of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Nevertheless, for apparently identical systems, there is some controversy about the DMI sign. Here, we show that the degree of oxidation of the top interface and the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer play a major role. Using Brillouin light-scattering meas…
Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co)n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Neel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capp…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized chiral spin textures, which offer great promise to store and process information at the nanoscale. In the presence of asymmetric exchange interactions, their chirality, which governs their dynamics, is generally considered as an intrinsic parameter set during the sample deposition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that a gate voltage can control this key parameter. We probe the chirality of skyrmions and chiral domain walls by observing the direction of their current-induced motion and show that a gate voltage can reverse it. This local and dynamical…
We present a mechanism for deterministic control of the Bloch chirality in magnetic domain walls and skyrmions, originating from the interplay between an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction (DMI) and a perpendicular magnetic field. Although conventional interfacial DMI favors chiral Néel skyrmions, it does not break the energetic symmetry of the two Bloch chiralities in mixed Bloch$-$Néel skyrmions. However, the energy barrier to switching between Bloch chiralities does depend on the sense of rotation, which is dictated by the direction of the driving field. Our analytical and micr…
Electric control of magnetism is a prerequisite for efficient and low power spintronic devices. More specifically, in heavy metal/ ferromagnet/ insulator heterostructures, voltage gating has been shown to locally and dynamically tune magnetic properties like interface anisotropy and saturation magnetization. However, its effect on interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which is crucial for the stability of magnetic skyrmions, has been challenging to achieve and has not been reported yet for ultrathin films. Here, we demonstrate 130% variation of DMI with electric field in Ta/FeCo…
Polar skyrmions are predicted to emerge from the interplay of elastic, electrostatic and gradient energies, in contrast to the key role of the anti-symmetric Dzyalozhinskii-Moriya interaction in magnetic skyrmions. With the discovery of topologically-stable polar skyrmions, it is of both fundamental and practical interest to understand the microscopic nature and the possibility of temperature- and strain-driven phase transitions in ensembles of such polar skyrmions. Here, we explore the reversible transition from a skyrmion state (topological charge of -1) to a two-dimensional, tetratic lattic…
The chirality, i.e. left or right handedness, is an important notion in a broad range of science. In condensed matter, this occurs not only in molecular or crystal forms but also in magnetic structures. A magnetic skyrmion, a topologically-stable spin vortex structure, as observed in chiral-lattice helimagnets is one such example; the spin swirling direction (skyrmion helicity) should be closely related to the underlying lattice chirality via the relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we report on the correlation between skyrmion helicity and crystal chirality as observed by Lorentz tra…
Recent advances on the stabilization and manipulation of chiral magnetization configurations in systems consisting in alternating atomic layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials hold promise of innovation in spintronics technology. The low dimensionality of the systems promotes spin orbit driven interfacial effects like antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and surface magnetic anisotropy, whose relative strengths may be tuned to achieve stable nanometer sized magnetic objects with fixed chirality. While in most of the cases this is obtained by engineering complex mu…
Self-organisation into spatially modulated structures has different nature from phase transition into uniform states. Skyrmions and half-skyrmions (merons) are representatives of such structures and are utilised in designing magnetoelectric, optical, and mechanoresponsive materials by controlling topological phases. However, skyrmions and half-skyrmions in molecular solids are rarely studied, though there is a universality in theoretical descriptions between magnetic and molecular systems with chiral interactions. Here we develop a simple physical system for controlling topological phases in a…
Realizing topological magnetism and its electric control are intensive topics in the spintronics due to their promising applications in information storage and logic technologies. Here we unveil that both can be achieved in the two-dimensional (2D) magnetoelectric multiferroics. Using first-principles calculations, we show that strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is the key ingredient for the formation of exotic chiral magnetism, could be induced in 2D multiferroics with vertical electric polarization via Rashba effect. We verify that such significant DMI can promote sub-10 n…
In the quest for miniaturizing magnetic devices, the effects of boundaries and surfaces become increasingly important. Here we show how the recently predicted boundary-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) affects the magnetization of ferromagnetic films with a $C_{\infty v}$ symmetry and a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. For an otherwise uniformly magnetized film, we find a surface twist when the magnetization in the bulk is canted by an in-plane external field. This twist at the surfaces caused by the boundary-induced DMI differs from the common canting caused by internal DMI ob…
Magnetic skyrmions, which are topological particle-like excitations in ferromagnets, have attracted a lot of attention recently. Skyrmionics is an attempt to use magnetic skyrmions as information carriers in next generation spintronic devices. Proposals of manipulations and operations of skyrmions are highly desired. Here, we show that the conversion, duplication and merging of isolated skyrmions with different chirality and topology are possible all in one system. We also demonstrate the conversion of a skyrmion into another form of a skyrmion, i.e., a bimeron. We design spin logic gates such…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral nanoscale spin textures which are usually induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials, such as Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. The electric control of skyrmions is important for their potential application in low-power memory technologies. Here, we predict that DMI and magnetic skyrmions in a Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ monolayer can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization of an adjacent 2D vdW ferroelectric In$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Based on density functional theor…
In chiral magnetic materials, numerous intriguing phenomena such as built in chiral magnetic domain walls (DWs) and skyrmions are generated by the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI). The DMI also results in asymmetric DW speed under in plane magnetic field, which provides a useful scheme to measure the DMI strengths. However, recent findings of additional asymmetries such as chiral damping have disenabled unambiguous DMI determination and the underlying mechanism of overall asymmetries becomes under debate. By extracting the DMI-induced symmetric contribution, here we experimentally inves…
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is at heart of chiral magnetism and causes emergence of rich non-collinear and unique topological spin textures in magnetic materials, including cycloids, helices, skyrmions and other. Here we show that strong intrinsic DMI lives in recently discovered van der Waals magnetic two-dimensional materials, due to the sizeable spin-orbit coupling on the non-magnetic ions. In a perfect crystal, this intrinsic DMI remains hidden, but is released with any break of point-inversion symmetry between magnetic ions, unavoidable at the sample edges, at ever present structura…
Recently, great effort has been devoted to the search for two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials with inherent strong Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, through a first-principles approach, we systematically investigate the effect of biaxial strain on the DMI, the Heisenberg exchange interaction, and the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Janus Cr$_{2}$X$_{3}$Y$_{3}$ (X, Y = Cl, Br, I, X $\neq$ Y) monolayers. Both DMI and MAE can be significantly enhanced by tensile strain, while a reversal of the chirality of DMI in Cr$_{2}$Cl$_{3}$Br$_{3}$ and a switch of MAE from off-pla…
The stabilization of chiral magnetic spin-structures in thin films is often attributed to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Very recently, however, it has been reported that the chirality induced by the DMI can be affected by dipolar interactions. These dipolar fields tend to form Néel caps, which entails the formation of a clockwise chirality at the top of the film and a counterclockwise chirality at the bottom. Here, we show that engineering an alternating DMI that changes sign across the film thickness, together with the tendency to form Néel caps, leads to an enhance…
Using first-principle calculations, we demonstrate several approaches to manipulate Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin magnetic films. First, we find that DMI is significantly enhanced when the ferromagnetic (FM) layer is sandwiched between nonmagnetic (NM) layers inducing additive DMI in NM/FM/NM structures. For instance, as Pt and Ir below Co induce DMI of opposite chirality, inserting Co between Pt (below) and Ir (above) in Ir/Co/Pt trilayers enhances the DMI of Co/Pt bilayers by 15\%. Furthermore, in case of Pb/Co/Pt trilayers (Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers), DMI can be enhance…

The topological Hall effect (THE), induced by the Berry curvature, which originates from non-zero scalar spin chirality, is an important feature for mesoscopic topological structures, such as skyrmions. However, the THE might also arise from other microscopic non-coplanar spin structures in the lattice. Thus, the origin of the THE inevitably needs to be determined to fully understand skyrmions and find new host materials. Here, we examine the Hall effect in both bulk- and micron-sized lamellar samples of MnBi. The sample size affects the temperature and field range in which the THE is detectab…
