Context. Several methods have been proposed to build 3D extinction maps of the Milky Way (MW), most often based on Bayesian approaches. Although some studies employed machine learning (ML) methods in part of their procedure, or to specific targets, no 3D extinction map of a large volume of the MW solely based on a Neural Network method has been reported so far. Aims. We aim to apply deep learning as a solution to build 3D extinction maps of the MW. Methods. We built a convolutional neural network (CNN) using the CIANNA framework, and trained it with synthetic 2MASS data. We used the Besançon Galaxy model to generate mock star catalogs, and 1D Gaussian random fields to simulate the extinction profiles. From these data we computed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to train the network, using the corresponding extinction profiles as targets. A forward pass with observed 2MASS CMDs provided extinction profile estimates for a grid of lines of sight. Results. We trained our network with data simulating lines of sight in the area of the Carina spiral arm tangent and obtained a 3D extinction map for a large sector in this region ($l = 257 - 303$ deg, $|b| \le 5$ deg), with distance and angular resolutions of $100$ pc and $30$ arcmin, respectively, and reaching up to $\sim 10$ kpc. Although each sightline is computed independently in the forward phase, the so-called fingers-of-God artifacts are weaker than in many other 3D extinction maps. We found that our CNN was efficient in taking advantage of redundancy across lines of sight, enabling us to train it with only 9 sightlines simultaneously to build the whole map. Conclusions. We found deep learning to be a reliable approach to produce 3D extinction maps from large surveys. With this methodology, we expect to easily combine heterogeneous surveys without cross-matching, and therefore to exploit several surveys in a complementary fashion.
Photometric CCD {\it UBVI}$_C$ photometry obtained for 4860 stars surrounding the embedded southern cluster SAI~113 (Skiff~8) is used to examine the reddening in the field and derive the distance to the cluster and nearby van~Genderen~1. Spectroscopic color excesses for bright cluster stars, photometric reddenings for A3 dwarfs, and dereddening of cluster stars imply that the reddening and extinction laws match results derived for other young clusters in Carina: E$_{U-B}/$E$_{B-V} \simeq 0.64$ and $R_V \simeq 4$. SAI~113 displays features that may be linked to a history of dynamical interactio…
A reanalysis of the (seemingly very distant) open cluster Shorlin 1, the group of stars associated with WR 38 and WR 38a, is made on the basis of existing UBV and JHKs observations for cluster members. The 2MASS observations, in particular, imply a mean cluster reddening of E(B-V)=1.45+-0.07 and a distance of 2.94+-0.12 kpc. The reddening agrees with the UBV results provided that the local reddening slope is described by E(U-B)/E(B-V)=0.64+-0.01, but the distance estimates in the 2MASS and UBV systems agree only if the ratio of total-to-selective extinction for the associated dust is R=Av/E(B-…
Evidence is presented indicating that the young star cluster Westerlund~2 lies $d_{\odot}\sim3.0$ kpc in the direction of Carina. The distance is tied partly to new $UBVRI_c$ photometry and revised spectral classifications for cluster stars, which imply that dust in the direction of Carina is characterized by an anomalous extinction law ($R_V\sim3.8$). That result was determined from a multi-faceted approach relying on the variable-extinction and color excess methods.
We present HST/STIS observations and analysis of two prominent nebular structures around the central source of Eta Carinae, the knots C and D. The former is brighter than the latter for emission lines from intermediate or high ionization potential ions. The brightness of lines from intermediate and high ionization potential ions significantly decreases at phases around periastron. We do not see conspicuous changes in the brightness of lines from low ionization potential (<13.6 eV) that the total extinction towards the Weigelt structures is that the total extinction towards the Weigelt structur…
We present the first extensive spectroscopic study of the global population in star clusters Trumpler~16, Trumpler~14 and Collinder~232 in the Carina Nebula, using data from the Gaia-ESO Survey, down to solar-mass stars. In addition to the standard homogeneous Survey data reduction, a special processing was applied here because of the bright nebulosity surrounding Carina stars. We find about four hundred good candidate members ranging from OB types down to slightly sub-solar masses. About one-hundred heavily-reddened early-type Carina members found here were previously unrecognized or poorly c…

Massive OB stars are critical to the ecology of galaxies, and yet our knowledge of OB stars in the Milky Way, fainter than $V \sim 12$, remains patchy. Data from the VST Photometric H$α$ Survey (VPHAS+) permit the construction of the first deep catalogues of blue excess-selected OB stars, without neglecting the stellar field. A total of 14900 candidates with 2MASS cross-matches are blue-selected from a 42 square-degree region in the Galactic Plane, capturing the Carina Arm over the Galactic longitude range $282^{\circ} \lesssim \ell \lesssim 293^{\circ}$. Spectral energy distribution fitting i…
We report the discovery in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the new Herbig-Haro jet, HH 1019, located near the Tr 14 cluster in the Carina Nebula. Like other HH jets in the region, this bipolar collimated flow emerges from the head of a dark dust pillar. However, HH 1019 is unique because -- unlike all other HH jets known to date -- it is identified by a linear chain of dark, dusty knots that are seen primarily in silhouette against the background screen of the H II region. Proper motions confirm that these dark condensations move along the jet axis at high speed. [S II] emission traces …
Aims. We aim to map the 3D distribution of the interstellar extinction of the Milky Way disk up to distances larger than those probed with the Gaia parallax alone. Methods. We apply the FEDReD (Field Extinction-Distance Relation Deconvolver) algorithm to the 2MASS near-infrared photometry together with the Gaia DR2 astrometry and photometry. This algorithm uses a Bayesian deconvolution approach, based on an empirical HR-diagram representative of the local thin disk, in order to map the extinction as a function of distance of various fields of view. Results. We analysed more than 5.6 million st…
A campaign is described, open to participation by interested AAVSO members, of follow-up observations for newly-discovered Cepheid variables in undersampled and obscured regions of the Galaxy. A primary objective being to use these supergiants to clarify the Galaxy's spiral nature. Preliminary multiband photometric observations are presented for three Cepheids discovered beyond the obscuring dust between the Cygnus & Aquila Rifts (40 \le l \le 50 degrees), a region reputedly tied to a segment of the Sagittarius-Carina arm which appears to cease unexpectedly. The data confirm the existence of e…
We provide new, high-resolution A(Ks) extinction maps of the heavily reddened Galactic midplane based on the Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excess ("RJCE") method. RJCE determines star-by-star reddening based on a combination of near- and mid-infrared photometry. The new RJCE-generated maps have 2 x 2 arcmin pixels and span some of the most severely extinguished regions of the Galaxy -- those covered with Spitzer+IRAC imaging by the GLIMPSE-I, -II, -3D, and Vela-Carina surveys, from 256<l<65 deg and, in general, for |b| <= 1-1.5 deg (extending up to |b|<=4 deg in the bulge). Using RJCE extinction measur…
Gaia data are revolutionizing our knowledge of the evolutionary history of the Milky Way. 3D maps of the interstellar dust provide complementary information and are a tool for a wide range of uses. We aimed at building 3D maps of the dust in the Local arm and surrounding regions. To do so, Gaia DR2 photometric data were combined with 2MASS measurements to derive extinction towards stars that possess accurate photometry and relative uncertainties on DR2 parallaxes smaller than 20\%. We applied to the extinctions a new hierarchical inversion algorithm adapted to large datasets and to a inhomogen…

Context: The ESO Public Survey "VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea" (VVV) provides deep multi-epoch infrared observations for an unprecedented 562 sq. degrees of the Galactic bulge, and adjacent regions of the disk. Aims: The VVV observations will foster the construction of a sample of Galactic star clusters with reliable and homogeneously derived physical parameters (e.g., age, distance, and mass, etc.). In this first paper in a series, the methodology employed to establish cluster parameters for the envisioned database are elaborated upon by analyzing a subsample of 4 known young open cluster…
[Abridged] Luminous hot stars dominate the stellar energy input to the interstellar medium throughout cosmological time, they are laboratories to test theories of stellar evolution and multiplicity, and they serve as luminous tracers of star formation in the Milky Way and other galaxies. Massive stars occupy well-defined loci in colour-colour and colour-magnitude spaces, enabling selection based on the combination of Gaia EDR3 astrometry and photometry and 2MASS photometry, even in the presence of substantive dust extinction. In this paper we devise an all-sky sample of such luminous OBA-type …
