We probe theoretically the emergence of strong coupling in a system consisting of a topological insulator (TI) and a III-V heterostructure using a numerical approach based on the scattering matrix formalism. Specifically, we investigate the interactions between terahertz excitations in a structure composed of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and GaAs materials. We find that the interaction between the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ layer and AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells with intersubband transitions (ISBTs) in the terahertz frequency regime creates new hybrid modes, namely Dirac plasmon-phonon-ISBT polaritons. The formation of these hybrid modes results in anti-crossings (spectral mode splitting) whose magnitude is an indication of the strength of the coupling. By varying the structural parameters of the constituent materials, our numerical calculations reveal that the magnitude of splitting depends strongly on the doping level and the scattering rate in the AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, as well as on the thickness of the GaAs spacer layer that separates the quantum-well structure from the TI layer. Our results reveal the material and device parameters required to obtain experimentally-observable signatures of strong coupling. Our model includes the contribution of an extra two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) that is predicted to arise at the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$/GaAs interface, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations that explicitly account for details of the atomic terminations at the interface. The presence of this massive 2DHG at the TI/III-V interface shifts the dispersion of the Dirac plasmon-ISBT polaritons to higher frequencies. The damping rate at this interface, in contrast, compensates the effect of the 2DHG. Finally, we observe that the phonon resonances in the TI layer are crucial to the coupling between the THz excitations in the TI and III-V materials.
We experimentally observe the fast relaxation and relatively slow recombination dynamics of photogenerated electrons/holes in an epitaxial graphene-on-Si heterostructure under pumping with a 1550-nm, 80-fs pulsed fiber laser beam and probing with the corresponding terahertz (THz) beam generated by and synchronized with the pumping laser. The time-resolved electric-field intensity originating from the coherent terahertz photon emission is electro-optically sampled in total-reflection geometry. The Fourier spectrum from 1.8 to 5.2 THz agrees well the pumping photon spectrum. This result is attri…
Dirac plasmons in graphene are very sensitive to the dielectric properties of the environment. We show that this can be used to probe the structure and composition of van der Waals heterostructures (vdWh) put underneath a single graphene layer. In order to do so, we assess vdWh composed of hexagonal boron nitride and different types of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). By performing realistic simulations that account for the contribution of each layer of the vdWh separately and including the importance of the substrate phonons, we show that one can achieve single-layer resolution by inv…

The AC conduction of epitaxially-grown SmB$_6$ thin films and superconducting heterostructures of SmB$_6$/YB$_6$ are investigated via time domain terahertz spectroscopy. A two-channel model of thickness-dependent bulk states and thickness-independent surface states accurately describes the measured conductance of bare SmB$_6$ thin films, demonstrating the presence of surface states in SmB$_6$. While the observed reductions in the simultaneously-measured superconducting gap, transition temperature, and superfluid density of SmB$_6$/YB$_6$ heterostructures relative to bare YB$_6$ indicate the pe…
Topological insulators in the Bi2Se3 family have an energy gap in the bulk and a gapless surface state consisting of a single Dirac cone. Low frequency optical absorption due to the surface state is universally determined by the fine structure constant. When the thickness of these three dimensional topological insulators is reduced, they become quasi-two dimensional insulators with enhanced absorbance. The two dimensional insulators can be topologically trivial or non-trivial depending on the thickness, and we predict that the optical absorption is larger for topological non-trivial case compa…

Realizing axion insulator state with a uniform magnetization considerably facilitates experimental explorations of the intriguing topological magnetoelectric effect, a hallmark of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs). Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that magnetic ions Cr3+ in monolayer CrI3 and Mn2+ in septuple-layer MnBi2Se4 have opposite exchange couplings to the topological surface states of 3D TI Bi2Se3. As an exciting result of such opposite exchange couplings, axion insulator state is realized by a uniform magnetization i…
The terahertz spectra of the dynamic conductivity and radiation absorption coefficient in germanium-silicon heterostructures with arrays of Ge hut clusters (quantum dots) have been measured for the first time in the frequency range of 0.3-1.2 THz at room temperature. It has been found that the effective dynamic conductivity and effective radiation absorption coefficient in the heterostructure due to the presence of germanium quantum dots in it are much larger than the respective quantities of both the bulk Ge single crystal and Ge/Si(001) without arrays of quantum dots. The possible microscopi…
Heterostructures between topological insulators (TI) and magnetic insulators represent a pathway to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Using density functional theory based systematic screening and investigation of thermodynamic, magnetic and topological properties of heterostructures, we demonstrate that forming a type-I heterostructure between a wide gap antiferromagnetic insulator Cr$_2$O$_3$ and a TI-film, such as Sb$_2$Te$_3$, can lead to pinning of the Fermi-level at the center of the gap, even when magnetically doped. Cr-doping in the heterostructure increases the gap to …
Relying on the magnetism induced by the proximity effect in heterostructures of topological insulators and magnetic insulators is one of the promising routes to achieve the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here we investigate heterostructures of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Fe$_3$O$_4$. By growing two different types of heterostructures by molecular beam epitaxy, Fe$_3$O$_4$ on Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ on Fe$_3$O$_4$, we explore differences in chemical stability, crystalline quality, electronic structure, and transport properties. We find the heterostructure Bi$_2$Te$_3$ on Fe$_3$O$_4$ to be a more via…
Cr2Ge2Te6 has been of interest for decades, as it is one of only a few ferromagnetic insulators. Recently, this material has been revisited due to its potential as a substrate for Bi2Te3, a topological insulator. This enables the possibility of studying the anomalous quantum Hall effect in topological insulators, and a route to novel spintronic devices. To probe the compatibility of these two materials, we use polarized variable temperature Raman microscopy to study Bi2Te3-Cr2Ge2Te6 heterostructure as well as the phonon dynamics of Cr2Ge2Te6. We found the temperature dependence of the Cr2Ge2Te…
The paper overviews experimental and theoretical studies of photogalvanic effects induced in BiSbTe- based three dimensional topological insulators by polarized terahertz radiation. We present the state-of-the-art of this subject, including most recent and well-established results. We discuss a phenomenological theory based on symmetry arguments and models illustrating the photocurrents origin. We give a brief glimpse of the underlying microscopic theory, as well as an overview of the main experimental results.
Interfaces between normal and topological insulators are bound to host metallic states that are protected by time-reversal symmetry and are therefore robust against disorder and interface reconstruction. Two-dimensional topological insulators (quantum spin Hall insulators) offer a unique opportunity to change the local topology by adsorption of atoms or molecules and thus comprise an ideal platform for designing topological heterostructures. Here, we apply first principles calculations to show that the quantum spin Hall insulator 1T'-MoS2 exhibits a phase transition to a trivial insulator upon…
Magnetic topological insulators such as Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 provide a platform for the realization of versatile time-reversal symmetry-breaking physics. By constructing heterostructures with Néel order in an antiferromagnetic CrSb and magnetic topological order in Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3, we realize emergent interfacial magnetic phenomena which can be tailored through artificial structural engineering. Through deliberate geometrical design of heterostructures and superlattices, we demonstrate the use of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in manipulating the magnetic properties of the topologica…
Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrathin multilayers of magnetic and heavy metals has recently attracted much interest. This method not only provides fundamental insights into photoinduced spin transport and spin-orbit interaction at highest frequencies but has also paved the way to applications such as efficient and ultrabroadband emitters of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. So far, predominantly standard ferromagnetic materials have been exploited. Here, by introducing a suitable figure of merit, we systematically compare the strength of terahertz emission from X/Pt bilayers with X b…
In integrating topological insulators (TIs) with conventional materials, one crucial issue is how the topological surface states (TSS) will behave in such heterostructures. We use first-principles approaches to establish accurate tunability of the vertical location of the TSS via intriguing dual-proximity effects. By depositing a conventional insulator (CI) overlayer onto a TI substrate (Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3), we demonstrate that, the TSS can float to the top of the CI film, or stay put at the CI/TI interface, or be pushed down deeper into the otherwise structurally homogeneous TI substrate. These…
Graphene-based heterostructures are a promising material system for designing the topologically nontrivial Chern insulating devices. Recently, a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer ferromagnetic insulator CrI$_{3}$ was successfully synthesized in experiments [Huang et al., Nature 546, 270 (2017)]. Here, these two interesting materials are proposed to build a heterostructure (Gr/CrI$_{3}$). Our first-principles calculations show that the system forms a van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, relatively facilely fabricated in experiments. A Chern insulating state is acquired in the Gr/CrI$_{3}$ heterost…
Electrical currents in a magnetic insulator/heavy metal heterostructure can induce two simultaneous effects, namely, spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) on the heavy metal side and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) on the magnetic insulator side. Within the framework of the pure spin current model based on the bulk spin Hall effect (SHE), the ratio of the spin Hall-induced anomalous Hall effect (SH-AHE) to SMR should be equal to the ratio of the field-like torque (FLT) to damping-like torque (DLT). We perform a quantitative study of SMR, SH-AHE, and SOTs in a series of thulium iron garnet/platinum or Tm…
We predict a new family of robust two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators in van der Waals heterostructures comprising graphene and chalcogenides BiTeX (X=Cl, Br and I). The layered structures of both constituent materials produce a naturally smooth interface that is conducive to proximity induced new topological states. First principles calculations reveal intrinsic topologically nontrivial bulk energy gaps as large as 70-80 meV, which can be further enhanced up to 120 meV by compression. The strong spin-orbit coupling in BiTeX has a significant influence on the graphene Dirac states, res…
The experimental observation of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in magnetic topological insulators has stimulated enormous interest in condensed-matter physics and materials science. For the purpose of realizing high-temperature QAHE, several material candidates have been proposed, among which the interface states in the CdO/ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures are particularly interesting and favorable for technological applications. Here, we report the experimental observation of the interfacial ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect in the Fe3O4/CdO/Fe3O4 heterostructures grown v…
We have performed a systematic investigation of the formation of topologically protected boundary states (TPBS) in topological/normal insulators (TI/NI) heterostructures. Using a recently developed scheme to construct {\it ab-initio} tight-binding Hamiltonian matrices from density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied systems of realistic size with high accuracy and control over the relevant parameters such as TI and NI band alignment, NI gap and spin-orbit coupling strength. Our findings point to the existence of an NI critical thickness for the emergence of TPBS and to the importa…
Topological states of matter originate from distinct topological electronic structures of materials. As for strong topological insulators (STIs), the topological surface (interface) is a direct consequence of electronic structure transition between materials categorized to different topological genus. Therefore, it is fundamentally interesting if such topological character can be manipulated. Besides tuning the crystal field and the strength of spin-orbital coupling (e.g., by external strain, or chemical doping), there is currently rare report on topological state induced in ordinary insulator…
With an MBE technique, a Si/Ge heterostructures are prepared containing layers of nanostructured Ge with quantum dots of size of several nanometers. The effective conductivity of the layers is determined by a quasioptical terahertz-subterahertz coherent source BWO spectroscopy. The conductivity is found to be strongly enhanced compared with the conductivity of bulk germanium. Possible microscopic mechanisms responsible for the enhancement will be discussed. Application of BWO spectrometers for obtaining precise quantitative information on of dielectric properties at THz-subTHz frequencies of s…
Integration of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on ferromagnetic materials (FM) may yield fascinating physics and promise for electronics and spintronic applications. In this work, high-temperature anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the TMD ZrTe2 thin film using heterostructure approach by depositing it on ferrimagnetic insulator YIG (Y3Fe5O12, yttrium iron garnet) is demonstrated. In this heterostructure, significant anomalous Hall effect can be observed at temperatures up to at least 400 K, which is a record high temperature for the observation of AHE in TMDs, and the large RAHE is more t…
In order to characterize magnetic-field (B) tunable THz plasmonic detectors, spectroscopy experiments were carried out at liquid helium temperatures and high magnetic fields on devices fabricated on a high electron mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. The samples were either gated (the gate of a meander shape) or ungated. Spectra of a photovoltage generated by THz radiation were obtained as a function of B at a fixed THz excitation from a THz laser or as a function of THz photon frequency at a fixed B with a Fourier spectrometer. In the first type of measurements, the wave vector of magnetopl…

Spin-to-charge conversion (SCC) involving topological surface states (TSS) is one of the most promising routes for highly efficient spintronic devices for terahertz (THz) emission. Here, the THz generation generally occurs mainly via SCC consisting in efficient dynamical spin injection into spin-locked TSS. In this work, we demonstrate sizable THz emission from a nanometric thick topological insultator (TI)/ferromagnetic junction - SnBi$_2$Te$_4$/Co - specifically designed to avoid bulk band crossing with the TSS at the Fermi level, unlike its parent material Bi$_2$Te$_3$. THz emission time do…
We use temperature-dependent Hall measurements to identify contributions of spin Hall, magnetic proximity, and sublattice effects to the anomalous Hall signal in heavy metal/ferrimagnetic insulator heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This approach enables detection of both the magnetic proximity effect onset temperature and the magnetization compensation temperature and provides essential information regarding the interfacial exchange coupling. Onset of a magnetic proximity effect yields a local extremum in the temperature-dependent anomalous Hall signal, which occurs at h…
We propose to use ferromagnetic insulator MnBi2Se4/Bi2Se3/antiferromagnetic insulator Mn2Bi2Se5 heterostructures for the realization of the axion insulator state. Importantly, the axion insulator state in such heterostructures only depends on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic insulator and hence can be observed in a wide range of external magnetic field. Using density functional calculations and model Hamiltonian simulations, we find that the top and bottom surfaces have opposite half-quantum Hall conductance, with a sizable global spin gap of 5.1 meV opened for the topological surface st…
Spin injection using ferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature is a building block for the realization of spin-functional semiconductor devices. Nevertheless, this has been very challenging due to the lack of reliable room-temperature ferromagnetism in well-known group IV and III-V based semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature spin injection by using spin pumping in a (Ga,Fe)Sb / BiSb heterostructure, where (Ga,Fe)Sb is a ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) with high Curie temperature (TC) and BiSb is a topological insulator (TI). Despite the very small magnetization of (Ga,…
The interface between magnetic materials and topological insulators can drive the formation of exotic phases of matter and enable functionality through manipulation of the strong spin polarized transport. Here, we report that the spin-momentum-locked transport in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is completely suppressed by scattering at a heterointerface with the kagome-lattice paramagnet, Co$_7$Se$_8$. Bi$_2$Se$_{3-}$Co$_7$Se$_{8-}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ trilayer heterostructures were grown using molecular beam epitaxy. Magnetotransport measurements revealed a substantial suppression of the weak …
We report the first terahertz Kerr measurements on bulk crystals of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. At T=10K and fields up to 8T, the real and imaginary Kerr angle and reflectance measurements utilizing both linearly and circularly polarized incident radiation were measured at a frequency of 5.24meV. A single fluid free carrier bulk response can not describe the line-shape. Surface states with a small mass and surprisingly large associated spectral weight quantitatively fit all data. However, carrier concentration inhomogeneity has not been ruled out. A method employing a gate is shown to be…
We use fiber-coupled photoconductive emitters and detectors to perform terahertz (THz) spectroscopy of lightly-doped n-InSb directly in the cryogenic (1.5 K) bore of a high-field superconducting magnet. We measure transmission spectra from 0.1-1.1 THz as the sample is driven through a metal-insulator transition (MIT) by applied magnetic field. In the low-field metallic state, the data directly reveal the plasma edge and magneto-plasmon modes. With increasing field, a surprisingly broad band (0.3-0.8 THz) of low transmission appears at the onset of the MIT. This band subsequently collapses and …
We show that a semiconductor thin film can acquire a non-trivial spin texture due to the proximity effect induced by a topological insulator. The effect stems from coupling to the topological surface states and is present even when the insulator is doped. We propose a semiconductor/topological insulator heterostructure as a device that allows measuring interface properties and probing surface states in uncompensated samples. We also find that the topological insulator surface modes can be significantly broadened and shifted by the presence of metallic contacts.
We performed optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements of a Mott insulator YTiO$_{3}$ and a band semiconductor Si using a laser diode (1.47 eV) and a femtosecond pulse laser (1.55 eV). Both samples possess long energy-relaxation times (1.5 ms for YTiO$_{3}$ and 15 $μ$s for Si); therefore, it is possible to extract terahertz complex conductivities of photoinduced carriers under equilibrium. We observed highly contrasting behavior - Drude conductivity in Si and localized conductivity possibly obeying the Jonscher law in YTiO$_{3}$. The carrier number at the highest carrier-concentration layer in…
Using THz spectroscopy in external magnetic fields we investigate the low-temperature charge dynamics of strained HgTe, a three dimensional topological insulator. From the Faraday rotation angle and ellipticity a complete characterization of the charge carriers is obtained, including the 2D density, the scattering rate and the Fermi velocity. The obtained value of the Fermi velocity provides further evidence for the Dirac character of the carriers in the sample. In resonator experiments, we observe quantum Hall oscillations at THz frequencies. The 2D density estimated from the period of these …
The problem of screening the Coulomb interaction between charge carriers in type II heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides is Analytically solved. At a sufficiently high density of charge carriers, the density dependence of the interlayer exciton energy is obtained. The energy of the interlayer exciton tends to zero in the metal--insulator transition point. The presented scheme of calculations makes it possible to find the temperature dependence of the density of this transition.
Issues of Ge hut array formation and growth at low temperatures on the Ge/Si(001) wetting layer are discussed on the basis of explorations performed by high resolution STM and in-situ RHEED. Data of HRTEM studies of multilayer Ge/Si heterostructures are presented with the focus on low-temperature formation of perfect films. Heteroepitaxial Si p-i-n-diodes with multilayer stacks of Ge/Si(001) quantum dot dense arrays built in intrinsic domains have been investigated and found to exhibit the photo-emf in a wide spectral range from 0.8 to 5 mcm. An effect of wide-band irradiation by infrared ligh…
The unique surface edge states make topological insulators a primary focus among different applications. In this article, we synthesized a large single crystal of Niobium(Nb)-doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator (TI) with a formula Nb0.25Bi2Se3. The single crystal has characterized by using various techniques such as Powder X-ray Diffractometer (PXRD), DC magnetization measurements, Raman, and Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (TRUS). There are (00l) reflections in the PXRD, and Superconductivity ingrown crystal is evident from clearly visible diamagnetic transition at 2.5K in both FC …
The magnetoelectric effect predicted in topological insulators makes heterostructures that combine magnetic materials and such insulators promising candidates for spintronics applications. Here, we theoretically consider a setup that exhibits two well-separated interfaces between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that there is a topological magnetic dipole-dipole interaction stemming from long-range Coulomb interactions. We analytically derive the magnetization dynamics at the two interfaces and discuss how the long-range coupling can be applied to non-locally indu…
Topological insulators are new states of matter with a bulk gap and robust gapless surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. When time-reversal symmetry is broken, the surface states are gapped, which induces a topological response of the system to electromagnetic field--the topological magnetoelectric effect. In this paper we study the behavior of topological surface states in heterostructures formed by a topological insulator and a magnetic insulator. Several magnetic insulators with compatible magnetic structure and relatively good lattice matching with topological insulators ${\r…
Topological insulators (TIs) are bulk insulators that possess robust helical conducting states along their interfaces with conventional insulators. A tremendous research effort has recently been devoted to TI-based heterostructures, in which conventional proximity effects give rise to a series of exotic physical phenomena. This paper reviews our recent works on the potential existence of topological proximity effects at the interface between a topological insulator and a normal insulator or other topologically trivial systems. We report the integration of the insulating ferromagnet GdN with epitaxial films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and present detailed structural, magnetic and transport characterization of the heterostructures. Fabrication of multi-channel Hall bars with bare and GdN-capped sections enables direct comparison of magnetotransport properties. We show that the presence of the magnetic overlayer results in suppression of weak anti-localization at the top surface.
The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics, causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser pulses. Employing terahertz (10$^{12}$ Hz) emission spectroscopy, we demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of th…
Topological insulator materials have been extensively studied in the field of condensed matter physics because nontrivial topology in the electronic state gives rise to a novel spin-polarized Dirac dispersion on the surface. To describe the electrodynamics of topological insulators, it is crucial to understand coherent and incoherent dynamics of carriers both in bulk and surface states. We applied terahertz emission spectroscopy to an intrinsic three-dimensional topological insulator material, $Bi_{1.5} Sb_{0.5} Te_{1.7} Se_{1.3}$, to elucidate ultrafast photo-induced carrier dynamics. The emi…
The Dirac electrons occupying the surface states (SSs) of topological insulators (TIs) have been predicted to exhibit many exciting magneto-transport phenomena. Here we report on the first experimental observation of an unconventional planar Hall effect (PHE) and an electrically gate-tunable hysteretic planar magnetoresistance (PMR) in EuS/TI heterostructures, in which EuS is a ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) with an in-plane magnetization. In such exchange-coupled FMI/TI heterostructures, we find a significant (suppressed) PHE when the in-plane magnetic field is parallel (perpendicular) to the …
We have synthesized Pb_{5}Bi_{24}Se_{41}, which is a new member of the (PbSe)_{5}(Bi2Se3)_{3m} homologous series with m = 4. This series of compounds consist of alternating layers of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and the ordinary insulator PbSe. Such a naturally-formed heterostructure has recently been elucidated to give rise to peculiar quasi-two-dimensional topological states throughout the bulk, and the discovery of Pb_{5}Bi_{24}Se_{41} expands the tunability of the topological states in this interesting homologous series. The trend in the resistivity anisotropy in this homologous series…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, which forms a natural multilayer heterostructure consisting of a topological insulator (TI) and an ordinary insulator. For m = 2, we observed a gapped Dirac-cone state within the bulk-band gap, suggesting that the topological interface states are effectively encapsulated by block layers; furthermore, it was found that the quantum confinement effect of the band dispersions of Bi2Se3 layers enhances the effective bulk-band gap to 0.5 eV, the largest ever observed in TIs. In addition, we found that the system is no …
Topologically-protected surface states present rich physics and promising spintronic, optoelectronic and photonic applications that require a proper understanding of their ultrafast carrier dynamics. Here, we investigate these dynamics in topological insulators (TIs) of the bismuth and antimony chalcogenide family, where we isolate the response of Dirac fermions at the surface from the response of bulk carriers by combining photoexcitation with below-bandgap terahertz (THz) photons with TI samples with varying Fermi level, including one sample with the Fermi level located within the bandgap. W…
Artificial semiconductor heterostructures played a pivotal role in modern electronic and photonic technologies, providing a highly effective mean for the manipulation and control of carriers, from the visible to the Terahertz (THz) frequency range. Despite the exceptional versatility, they commonly require challenging epitaxial growth procedures due to the need of clean and abrupt interfaces, which proved to be a major obstacle for the realization of room-temperature (RT), high-efficiency devices, like source, detectors or modulators, especially in the far-infrared. Two-dimensional (2D) layere…
