We present measurements of the intrinsic alignments (IAs) of the star-forming gas of galaxies in the EAGLE simulations. Radio continuum imaging of this gas enables cosmic shear measurements complementary to optical surveys. We measure the orientation of star-forming gas with respect to the direction to, and orientation of, neighbouring galaxies. Star-forming gas exhibits a preferentially radial orientation-direction alignment that is a decreasing function of galaxy pair separation, but remains significant to $\gtrsim 1$ Mpc at $z=0$. The alignment is qualitatively similar to that exhibited by the stars, but is weaker at fixed separation. Pairs of galaxies hosted by more massive subhaloes exhibit stronger alignment at fixed separation, but the strong alignment of close pairs is dominated by ${\sim}L^\star$ galaxies and their satellites. At fixed comoving separation, the radial alignment is stronger at higher redshift. The orientation-orientation alignment is consistent with random at all separations, despite subhaloes exhibiting preferential parallel minor axis alignment. The weaker IA of star-forming gas than for stars stems from the former's tendency to be less well aligned with the dark matter structure of galaxies than the latter, and implies that the systematic uncertainty due to IA may be less severe in radio continuum weak lensing surveys than in optical counterparts. Alignment models equating the orientation of star-forming gas discs to that of stellar discs or the DM structure of host subhaloes will therefore overestimate the impact of IAs on radio continuum cosmic shear measurements.
We investigate the relation between kinematic morphology, intrinsic colour and stellar mass of galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We calculate the intrinsic u-r colours and measure the fraction of kinetic energy invested in ordered corotation of 3562 galaxies at z=0 with stellar masses larger than $10^{10}M_{\odot}$. We perform a visual inspection of gri-composite images and find that our kinematic morphology correlates strongly with visual morphology. EAGLE produces a galaxy population for which morphology is tightly correlated with the location in the colour- mass …
We present measurements of the morphology of star-forming gas in galaxies from the EAGLE simulations, and its alignment relative to stars and dark matter (DM). Imaging of such gas in the radio continuum enables weak lensing experiments that complement traditional optical approaches. Star-forming gas is typically more flattened than its associated stars and DM, particularly for present-day subhaloes of total mass $\sim$$10^{ 12-12.5} \mathrm{M_{ \odot}}$, which preferentially host star-forming galaxies with rotationally-supported stellar discs. Such systems have oblate, spheroidal star-forming …
We report results for the alignments of galaxies in the EAGLE and cosmo-OWLS simulations as a function of galaxy separation and halo mass. The combination of these hydro-cosmological simulations enables us to span four orders of magnitude in halo mass ($10.7<log_{10}(M_{200}/[h^{-1}M_\odot])<15$) and a large range of separations ($-1<log_{10}(r/[h^{-1}Mpc])< 2$). We focus on two classes of alignments: the orientations of galaxies with respect to either the directions to, or the orientations of, surrounding galaxies. We find that the strength of the alignment is a strongly decreasing function o…
We investigate the contentious issue of the presence, or lack thereof, of satellites mass segregation in galaxy groups using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, the GALFORM semi-analytic and the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation catalogues of galaxy groups. We select groups with halo mass $12 \leqslant \log(M_{\text{halo}}/h^{-1}M_\odot) <14.5$ and redshift $z \leqslant 0.32$ and probe the radial distribution of stellar mass out to twice the group virial radius. All the samples are carefully constructed to be complete in stellar mass at each redshift range and efforts are ma…
We present dust-attenuated and dust emission fluxes for sufficiently resolved galaxies in the EAGLE suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, calculated with the SKIRT radiative transfer code. The post-processing procedure includes specific components for star formation regions, stellar sources, and diffuse dust, and takes into account stochastic heating of dust grains to obtain realistic broad-band fluxes in the wavelength range from ultraviolet to sub-millimeter. The mock survey includes nearly half a million simulated galaxies with stellar masses above 10^8.5 solar masses across six…
We estimate the expected event rate of gravitational wave signals from mergers of supermassive black holes that could be resolved by a space-based interferometer, such as the Evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA), utilising the reference cosmological hydrodynamical simulation from the EAGLE suite. These simulations assume a $Λ$CDM cosmogony with state-of-the-art subgrid models for radiative cooling, star formation, stellar mass loss, and feedback from stars and accreting black holes. They have been shown to reproduce the observed galaxy population with unprecedented fidelity. We c…
We present sensitive 870$μ$m continuum measurements from our ALMA programmes of 114 X-ray selected AGN in the CDF-S and COSMOS fields. We use these observations in combination with data from Spitzer and Herschel to construct a sample of 86 X-ray selected AGN, 63 with ALMA constraints at $z=1.5-3.2$ with stellar mass $>2\times10^{10}M_{\odot}$. We constructed broad-band spectral energy distributions in the infrared band (8 - 1000$μ$m) and constrain star-formation rates (SFRs) uncontaminated by the AGN. Using a hierarchical Bayesian method that takes into account the information from upper limit…

Determining the spatial distribution and intrinsic physical properties of neutral hydrogen on cosmological scales is one of the key goals of next-generation radio surveys. We use the EAGLE galaxy formation simulations to assess the properties of damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) that are associated with galaxies and their underlying dark matter haloes between 0 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 2. We find that the covering fraction of DLAs increases at higher redshift; a significant fraction of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) resides in the outskirts of galaxies with stellar mass greater than or equal to 10$^{10…
We use the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulation suite to study the specific angular momentum of galaxies, $j$, with the aims of (i) investigating the physical causes behind the wide range of $j$ at fixed mass and (ii) examining whether simple, theoretical models can explain the seemingly complex and non-linear nature of the evolution of $j$. We find that $j$ of the stars, $j_{\rm stars}$, and baryons, $j_{\rm bar}$, are strongly correlated with stellar and baryon mass, respectively, with the scatter being highly correlated with morphological proxies such as gas fraction, stellar concentr…
We examine the evolution of intrinsic u-r colours of galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, which has been shown to reproduce the observed redshift z=0.1 colour-magnitude distribution well. The median u-r of star-forming ('blue cloud') galaxies reddens by 1 mag from z=2 to 0 at fixed stellar mass, as their specific star formation rates decrease with time. A red sequence starts to build-up around z=1, due to the quenching of low-mass satellite galaxies at the faint end, and due to the quenching of more massive central galaxies by their active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the…
We investigate the evolution in colour and morphology of the progenitors of red-sequence galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We quantify colours with $u^{*}-r^{*}$ intrinsic magnitudes and morphologies with a measure of the stellar kinematics. The time when galaxies moved onto the red sequence depends on their morphology. Disc-type galaxies tend to have become red during the last 3 Gyr, while elliptical-type galaxies joined the red sequence earlier, with half the sample already being red 5 Gyr ago. The time-scale, $τ_{\rm{Green}}$, of colour transition through the `gr…
We use a sample of $z=0$ galaxies visually classified as slow rotators (SRs) in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effect of galaxy mergers on their formation, characterise their intrinsic galaxy properties, and study the connection between quenching and kinematic transformation. SRs that have had major or minor mergers (mass ratios $\ge 0.3$ and $0.1-0.3$, respectively) tend to have a higher triaxiality parameter and ex-situ stellar fractions than those that had exclusively very minor mergers or formed in the absence of mergers ("no-merger" SRs). No-merger SRs are more compac…
We use the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on galaxies as they fall into clusters. We find that SIDM galaxies follow similar orbits to their Cold Dark Matter (CDM) counterparts, but end up with ${\sim}$25 per cent less mass by the present day. One in three SIDM galaxies are entirely disrupted, compared to one in five CDM galaxies. However, the excess stripping will be harder to observe than suggested by previous DM-only simulations because the most stripped galaxies form cores and also lose stars: the most dis…
Any viable cosmological framework has to match the observed proportion of early- and late-type galaxies. In this contribution, we focus on the distribution of galaxy morphological types in the standard model of cosmology (Lambda cold dark matter, $Λ$CDM). Using the latest state-of-the-art cosmological $Λ$CDM simulations known as Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE, we calculate the intrinsic and sky-projected aspect ratio distribution of the stars in subhalos with stellar mass $M_* > 10^{10}\,M_\odot$ at redshift $z=0$. There is a significant deficit of intrinsically thin disk galaxies, which h…
We investigate the connection between the morphology and internal kinematics of the stellar component of central galaxies with mass $M_\star > {10}^{9.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulations. We compare several kinematic diagnostics commonly used to describe simulated galaxies, and find good consistency between them. We model the structure of galaxies as ellipsoids and quantify their morphology via the ratios of their principal axes. We show that the differentiation of blue star-forming and red quiescent galaxies using morphological diagnostics can be achieved with similar efficacy to the u…
Radiative feedback from massive stars can potentially trigger star formation in the surrounding molecular gas. Inspired by the case of radiatively driven implosion in M16 or Eagle Nebula, we analyze a similar case of star formation observed in the Cygnus X region. We present new JCMT observations of $^{13}$CO(3-2) and C$^{18}$O(3-2) molecular lines of a cometary feature located at 50 pc north of the Cyg OB2 complex that was previously identified in $^{12}$CO(3-2) mapping. These data are combined with archival H$α$, infrared, and radio continuum emission data, from which we measure the mass to …
We examine the connection between the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and the quenching and morphological evolution of central galaxies in the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG simulations. The simulations yield very different median CGM mass fractions, $f_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of halo mass, $M_{200}$, with low-mass haloes being significantly more gas-rich in IllustrisTNG than in EAGLE. Nonetheless, in both cases scatter in $f_{\rm CGM}$ at fixed $M_{200}$ is strongly correlated with the specific star formation rate and the kinematic morphology of central galaxies. The correlations are …
We investigate the connection between the intrinsic C IV absorption line variability and the continuum flux changes of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars using a sample of 78 sources in the Stripe 82 region. The absorption trough variability parameters are measured using the archival multi-epoch spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the continuum flux variability parameters are estimated from the photometric light curves obtained by the SDSS and the Catalina Real-Time Survey (CRTS) surveys. We find evidence for weak correlations (ρ~ 0.3) between the intrinsic C IV a…
We use a sample of 1669 QSOs ($r<20.15$, $3.6<z<4.0$) from the BOSS survey to study the intrinsic shape of their continuum and the Lyman continuum photon escape fraction (f$_{esc}$), estimated as the ratio between the observed flux and the expected intrinsic flux (corrected for the intergalactic medium absorption) in the wavelength range 865-885 Å rest-frame. Modelling the intrinsic QSO continuum shape with a power-law, $F_λ\proptoλ^{-γ}$, we find a median $γ=1.30$ (with a dispersion of $0.38$, no dependence on the redshift and a mild intrinsic luminosity dependence) and a mean f$_{esc}=0.75$ …
The intrinsic Baldwin effect is an anti-correlation between the line equivalent width and the flux of the underlying continuum detected in a single variable active galactic nucleus (AGN). This effect, in spite of the extensive research, is still not well understood, and might give us more information about the physical properties of the line and continuum emission regions in AGNs. Here we present preliminary results of our investigation of the intrinsic Baldwin effect of the broad H$β$ line in several Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy 1) galaxies, for which data were taken from the long-term monitor…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to enable transformational progress in studying galaxy populations in the very early Universe, during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). A critical parameter for understanding the sources that reionized the Universe is the Lyman-continuum production efficiency, $ξ_{\rm ion}$, defined as the rate of production of ionizing photons divided by the intrinsic UV luminosity. In this work, we combine self-consistent star formation and chemical enrichment histories predicted by semi-analytic models of galaxy formation with stellar population synthesis (SP…
We present new spectroscopy of the z=3.62 gravitationally lensed quasar B1422+117 from the Gemini North GMOS integral field spectrograph. We observe significant differential magnifications between the broad emission lines and the continuum, as well as across the velocity structure of the Lyman-alpha line. We take advantage of this differential microlensing to algebraically decompose the quasar spectrum into the absorbed broad emission line and absorbed continuum components. We use the latter to derive the intrinsic Ly-alpha forest absorption spectrum. The proximity effect is clearly detected, …
We investigate the relationship between the MgII $\lambda2798$ emission-line and the 3000 Å continuum variations using a sample of 68 intermediate-redshift ($z\sim$ 0.65$-$1.50) broad-line quasars spanning a bolometric luminosity range of 44.49 erg s$^{-1} \leq \rm{log}$$L_{\rm{bol}} \leq 46.31$ erg s$^{-1}$ (Eddington ratio from $\sim$ 0.026 to 0.862). This sample is constructed from SDSS-DR7Q and BOSS-DR12Q, each with at least 2 spectroscopic epochs in SDSS-I/II/III surveys. Additionally, we adopt the following signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) selection criteria: a) for MgII and the 3000 Å contin…
The Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3516 has undergone major spectral changes in recent years. In 2017 we obtained Chandra, NuSTAR, and Swift observations during its new low-flux state. Using these observations we model the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the intrinsic X-ray absorption, and compare the results with those from historical observations taken in 2006. We thereby investigate the effects of the changing-look phenomenon on the accretion-powered radiation and the ionized outflows. Compared to its normal high-flux state in 2006, the intrinsic bolometric luminosity of NGC 3516 was lower by …
A peculiar source in the Galactic center known as the Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) moves on a highly eccentric orbit around the supermassive black hole with the pericenter passage in the spring of 2014. Its nature has been uncertain mainly because of the lack of any information about its intrinsic geometry. For the first time, we use near-infrared polarimetric imaging data to obtain constraints about the geometrical properties of the DSO. We find out that DSO is an intrinsically polarized source, based on the significance analysis of polarization parameters, with the degree of the polarizat…
Periodic quasars have been suggested to host supermassive binary black holes (BBHs) in their centers, and their optical/UV periodicities are interpreted as caused by either the Doppler-boosting (DB) effect of continuum emission from the disk around the secondary black hole (BH) or intrinsic accretion rate variation. However, no other definitive evidence has been found to confirm such a BBH interpretation(s). In this paper, we investigate the responses of broad emission lines (BELs) to the continuum variations for these quasars under two BBH scenarios, and check whether they can be distinguishe…
We use comparisons between the SAMI Galaxy Survey and equilibrium galaxy models to infer the importance of disc fading in the transition of spirals into lenticular (S0) galaxies. The local S0 population has both higher photometric concentration and lower stellar spin than spiral galaxies of comparable mass and we test whether this separation can be accounted for by passive aging alone. We construct a suite of dynamically self--consistent galaxy models, with a bulge, disc and halo using the GalactICS code. The dispersion-dominated bulge is given a uniformly old stellar population, while the dis…
The scatter (${\rmσ_{\text{sSFR}}}$) of the specific star formation rates (sSFRs) of galaxies is a measure of the diversity in their star formation histories (SFHs) at a given mass. In this paper we employ the EAGLE simulations to study the dependence of the ${\rm σ_{\text{sSFR}}}$ of galaxies on stellar mass (${\rm M_{\star}}$) through the ${\rm σ_{\text{sSFR}}}$-${\rm M_{\star}}$ relation in $ {\rm z \sim 0-4}$. We find that the relation evolves with time, with the dispersion depending on both stellar mass and redshift. The models point to an evolving U-shape form for the ${\rm σ_{\text{sSFR…
We investigate the sensitivity of the measured broad emission-line responsivity dlog f_line/dlog f_cont to continuum variations in the context of straw-man BLR geometries of varying size with fixed BLR boundaries, and for which the intrinsic emission-line responsivity is known a priori. We find for a generic emission-line that the measured responsivity, delay and maximum of the cross-correlation function are correlated for characteristic continuum variability timescales T_char less than the maximum delay for that line tau_max(line) for a particular choice of BLR geometry and observer orientati…
We present a detailed radio-continuum study on Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR), MCSNR J0536-7038. This Type Ia SNR follows a horseshoe morphology, with a size 32 pc $\times$ 32 pc (1-pc uncertainty in each direction). It exhibits a radio spectrum $α=-0.52\pm0.07$ between $λ= 73$ and 6 cm. We report detections of regions showing moderately high fractional polarisation at 6 cm, with a peak value of 71$\pm$25% and a mean fractional polarisation of 35$\pm$8%. We also estimate an average rotation measure across the remnan…
In this manuscript, we check the well-known correlation between \oiii luminosity and continuum luminosity (\loiiicon) for AGN by a large sample of 1982 SDSS QSOs with $z<0.8$ and with high quality spectra. The strong correlation of \loiiicon can be found, similar as previous results for AGN. Moreover, among the 1982 QSOs, there are 708 QSOs with the [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$5007Å described by two components: one core component plus one extended component. Based on the luminosity from the core components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~narrow}$) and from the extended components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~ext…
Measuring the star-forming properties of AGN hosts is key to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, this topic remains debated, partly due to the difficulties in separating the infrared (i.e. 1--1000 $μ$m) emission into AGN and star-forming components. Taking advantage of archival far-infrared data from Herschel, we present a new set of AGN and galaxy infrared templates, and introduce the spectral energy distribution fitting code IRAGNSEP. Both can be used to measure infrared host galaxy properties, free of AGN contamination. To build these, we used a sample of 100 local…
Context: HH 158, the jet from the young star DG Tau, is one of the few sources of its type where jet knots have been detected at optical and X-ray wavelengths. Aims: To search, using Very Large Array observations of this source, radio knots and if detected, compare them with the optical and X-ray knots. To model the emission from the radio knots. Methods: We analyzed archive data and also obtained new Very Large Array observations of this source, as well as an optical image, to measure the present position of the knots. We also modeled the radio emission from the knots in terms of shocks in a …
