In this paper, a new structure is proposed which is expected to realize dual-band electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect in terahertz spectrum. It can be regarded as a metamaterial of grating-like elements composed of dual-band U-shaped resonators. The near-field coupling between bright modes can produce EIT-like effect. After optimizing the parameters, our numerical simulated results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The EIT-like effect can significantly reduce the group speed near the transparent window, may gain more significant potential applications in slow-light transmission and optical storage.
The recent development of the terahertz waveguide makes it an excellent platform for integrating many intriguing functionalities, which offers tremendous potential to build compact and robust terahertz systems. In the context of next-generation high-speed communication links at the terahertz band, engineering the dispersion and birefringence of terahertz waves is essential. Here, we experimentally demonstrate subwavelength birefringent waveguide gratings based on the low-loss cyclic olefin copolymer exploiting micro-machining fabrication techniques. Asymmetric cross-section and periodic-struct…
We have developed terahertz frequency quantum cascade lasers that exploit a double-periodicity distributed feedback grating to control the emission frequency and the output beam direction independently. The spatial refractive index modulation of the gratings necessary to provide optical feedback at a fixed frequency and, simultaneously, a far-field emission pattern centered at controlled angles, was designed through use of an appropriate wavevector scattering model. Single mode THz emission at angles tuned by design between 0° and 50° was realized, leading to an original phase-matching approac…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
We propose a graphene-on-grating nanostructure to enable second-order spatial differentiation computation in terahertz (THz) region. The differentiation operation is based on the interference between the direct reflected field and the leakage of two excited surface plasmon polaritons counter-propagating along the graphene sheet. With the spatial coupled-mode theory, we derive out that the requirement for the second-order spatial differentiation is the critical coupling condition. We numerically demonstrate such an analog computation with Gaussian beams. It shows that the spatial bandwidth of t…
High input intensities are usually required to efficiently excite optical nonlinear effects in ultrathin structures. This problem is particularly critical at terahertz (THz) frequencies because high input power THz sources are not available. The demonstration of enhanced nonlinear effects at THz frequencies is particularly important since these nonlinear mechanisms promise to play a significant role in the development and design of new reconfigurable planar THz nonlinear devices. In this work, we present a novel class of ultrathin nonlinear hybrid planar THz devices based on graphene-covered p…
Ultrashort electron bunches are useful for applications like ultrafast imaging and coherent radiation production. Currently, however, the shortest achievable bunches, at attosecond time scales, have only been realized in the single or very few electron regime, limited by Coulomb repulsion and electron energy spread. Using ab initio simulations and theoretical analysis, we show that highly-charged bunches are achievable by subjecting relativistic (few MeV-scale) electrons to a superposition of terahertz and optical pulses. Using realistic electron bunches and laser pulse parameters which are wi…
We propose a microscopic theory of terahertz (THz) radiation generation on metal gratings under the action of femtosecond laser pulses. In contrast to previous models, only low-frequency currents inside the metal are considered without involving electron emission. The presented model is based on plasmon-enhanced thermal effects and explains the resonant character of optical-to-THz conversion giving an adequate estimation for the full signal energy. Numerical modeling reproduces specific experimental features like delayed character of THz response and low conversion efficiency when the grating …
We present an electrically switchable graphene terahertz (THz) modulator with a tunable-by-design optical bandwidth and we exploit it to compensate the cavity dispersion of a quantum cascade laser (QCL). Electrostatic gating is achieved by a metal-grating used as a gate electrode, with an HfO2/AlOx gate dielectric on top. This is patterned on a polyimide layer, which acts as a quarter wave resonance cavity, coupled with an Au reflector underneath. We get 90% modulation depth of the intensity, combined with a 20 kHz electrical bandwidth in the 1.9 _ 2.7 THz range. We then integrate our modulato…
Nonlinear optics is an increasingly important field for scientific and technological applications, owing to its relevance and potential for optical and optoelectronic technologies. Currently, there is an active search for suitable nonlinear material systems with efficient conversion and small material footprint. Ideally, the material system should allow for chip-integration and room-temperature operation. Two-dimensional materials are highly interesting in this regard. Particularly promising is graphene, which has demonstrated an exceptionally large nonlinearity in the terahertz regime. Yet, t…
We present a computational study of terahertz optical properties of a grating-coupled plasmonic structure based on micrometer-thin InSb layers. We find two strong absorption resonances that we interpret as standing surface plasmon modes and investigate their dispersion relations, dependence on InSb thickness, and the spatial distribution of the electric field. The observed surface plasmon modes are well described by a simple theory of the air/InSb/air trilayer. The plasmonic response of the grating/InSb structure is highly sensitive to the dielectric environment and the presence of an analyte …
During the last decade, new unusual physical phenomena in studies on the optics of dielectric mesoscale particles of arbitrary three dimensional shape and gratings with Mie size parameter q ~ 10 have been discovered. The report provides a brief overview of these phenomena from optics to terahertz, plasmonic and acoustic . We also discuss different particle configurations (isolated or interacting, Janus) and draw a brief overview of the possible applications of such mesoscale structures, in connection with field enhancement, nanoparticles manipulation and super resolution imaging. The presence …
In this paper, we design and simulate a terahertz (THz) controllable active plasmonic waveguide structure based on a single graphene layer that is placed on a random silicon grating substrate. Optical gain in the proposed THz active plasmonic waveguide structure is provided by the stimulated emission process in the photoexcited graphene monolayer that leads to the amplification of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves. We use a random grating substrate to introduce Anderson localization of the SPP waves propagating through the graphene monolayer to enhance their optical amplification at resona…
Quantum sensing is highly attractive for accessing spectral regions in which the detection of photons is technically challenging: sample information is gained in the spectral region of interest and transferred via entanglement into another spectral range, for which highly sensitive detectors are available. This is especially beneficial for terahertz radiation, as the corresponding photon energy lies in the range of a few meV - an energy where no semiconductor detectors are available and coherent detection schemes or cryogenically cooled bolometers have to be employed. Here, we report on the fi…
In order to confine waves beyond the diffraction limit, advances in fabrication techniques have enabled subwavelength structuring of matter, achieving near-field control of light and other types of waves. The price is often expensive fabrication needs and the irreversibility of device functionality, as well as the introduction of impurities, a major contributor to losses. In this Letter, we propose temporal inhomogeneities, such as a periodic drive in the electromagnetic properties of a surface which supports guided modes, to circumvent the need for subwavelength fabrication in the coupling of…
Imaging below the diffraction limit is always a public interest because of the restricted resolution of conventional imaging systems. To beat the limit, evanescent harmonics decaying in space must participate in the imaging process. Here, we introduce the method of spatial spectrum sampling, a novel far-field superresolution imaging method for microwave and terahertz regime. Strong dispersion and momentum conservation allow the spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSP) structure to become a sensitive probe for spatial harmonics. This enables that the spatial information of the targets including b…
