Nuclear reactors are an essential source of neutrinos. In this proceeding, I review the past and current status of the research on neutrino oscillations using reactor neutrinos. I also present a promising idea for positron tagging that will potentially be a game-changer in the field.
Rector neutrinos have been a tool to investigate neutrino properties for more than 60 years. The reactor neutrino flux was measured throughout 80s-90s. In the 2000s, reactor neutrino oscillations at large baselines were observed by the KamLAND experiment and later in 2012 at short baselines by the Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO experiments. Reactor neutrino experiments have significantly contributed to our current knowledge of oscillation parameters. The detector technology has been majorly improved over decades and we have entered era of precise measurements. The recent absolute measurement …
With the end of Daya Bay experimental operations in December 2020, I review the history, discoveries, measurements and impact of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in China.
Reactor neutrinos play a substantial role in the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos. With current and upcoming precision experiments, it is essential more than ever to understand the reactor neutrino flux and spectrum. However, two discrepancies between prediction and measurement are observed. On the one hand, there is a $\sim6\%$ total measured flux deficit, known as the reactor antineutrino anomaly, consistently seen by several experiments at short baselines. On the other hand, there is an observed excess over prediction for $\barν_e$ energies between 5-7 MeV. We discuss curren…
The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment discovered an unexpectedly large neutrino oscillation related to the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in 2012. This finding paved the way to the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. In this article, we review the history, featured design, and scientific results of Daya Bay. Prospects of the experiment are also described.
Muon induced neutrons and long-lived radioactive isotopes are important background sources for low-energy underground experiments. We study the produced processes and properties of cosmic muon induced backgrounds, show the muon veto system used for rejecting these backgrounds and the methods to estimate residual backgrounds in the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment.
Reactor neutrinos have been an important tool for both discovery and precision measurement in the history of neutrino studies. Since the first generation of reactor neutrino experiments in the 1950s, the detector technology has been greatly advanced. New ideas, new knowledge, and modern software also enhanced the power of the experiments. The current reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO have led neutrino physics into the precision era. In this article, we will review these developments and accumulations, address the key issues in designing a state-of-art reactor neutr…
In the past decade, the precise measurement of the lastly known neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ has enabled the resolution of neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) at medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation (MBRO) experiments. On the other hand, recent calculations of the reactor neutrino flux predict percent-level sub-structures in the $\barν_e$ spectrum due to Coulomb effects in beta decay. Such fine structure in the reactor spectrum could be an important issue for the determination of neutrino MH for the MBRO approach since they could affect the sub-dominant oscillation pattern used to discrimin…
Reactor antineutrino experiments have the ability to search for neutrino oscillations independent of reactor flux predictions using a relative measurement of the neutrino flux and spectrum across a range of baselines. The range of accessible oscillation parameters are determined by the baselines of the detector arrangement. We examine the sensitivity of short-baseline experiments with more than one detector and discuss the optimization of a second, far detector. The extended reach in baselines of a 2-detector experiment will improve sensitivity to short-baseline neutrino oscillations while als…
DANSSino is a simplified pilot version of a solid-state detector of reactor antineutrino (it is being created within the DANSS project and will be installed close to an industrial nuclear power reactor). Numerous tests performed under a 3 GW(th) reactor of the Kalinin NPP at a distance of 11 m from the core demonstrate operability of the chosen design and reveal the main sources of the background. In spite of its small size (20x20x100 ccm), the pilot detector turned out to be quite sensitive to reactor neutrinos, detecting about 70 IBD events per day with the signal-to-background ratio about u…
This presentation describes a measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter, sin^2(2theta_13), from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Disappearance of electron antineutrinos at a distance of ~2 km from a set of six reactors, where the reactor flux is constrained by near detectors, has been clearly observed. The result, based on the ratio of observed to expected rate of antineutrinos, using 139 days of data taken between December 24, 2011 and May 11, 2012, is sin^2(2theta_13) = 0.089 +/- 0.010(stat.) +/- 0.005(syst.). Improvements in sensitivity from inclusion of additional data, spectra…
The successful measurements of the smallest neutrino mixing angle, $θ_{13}$, in 2012 by the short (1$\sim$2 km) baseline reactor neutrinos experiments, Daya Bay, RENO, and Double Chooz, have triggered a golden age of neutrino physics. The three experiments have been improving the $θ_{13}$ measurements by accumulating event statistics and reducing systematic uncertainties. Now the $θ_{13}$ measurement is the most precise one among the mixing angles in the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix. The most updated $θ_{13}$ and $Δm^{2}_{ee}$ measurements from these experiments are reported here as …
We study the feasibility of a sterile neutrino search at the China Advanced Research Reactor by measuring $\bar ν_e$ survival probability with a baseline of less than 15 m. Both hydrogen and deuteron have been considered as potential targets. The sensitivity to sterile-to-regular neutrino mixing is investigated under the "3(active)+1(sterile)" framework. We find that the mixing parameter $\sin^2(2θ_{14})$ can be severely constrained by such measurement if the mass square difference $Δm_{14}^2$ is of the order of $\sim$1 eV$^2$.
The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment announced the discovery of a non-zero value of \sin^22θ_{13} with significance better than 5 σin 2012. The experiment is continuing to improve the precision of \sin^22θ_{13} and explore other physics topics. In this talk, I will show the current oscillation and mass-squared difference results which are based on the combined analysis of the measured rates and energy spectra of antineutrino events, an independent measurement of θ_{13} using IBD events where delayed neutrons are captured on hydrogens, and a search for light sterile neutrinos.
Indian Scintillator Matrix for Reactor Anti-Neutrinos (ISMRAN), a plastic scintillator array (10$\times$10), is being constructed for the purpose of electron anti-neutrino ($\overline\nuup_{e}$) detection for reactor monitoring applications. A prototype detector called mini-ISMRAN, which consists of 16$\%$ of ISMRAN, has been setup for studying the detector response, background rates and event characterization in the reactor and non-reactor environment. The data acquisition system based on waveform digitizers is being used for pulse processing and event triggering. Monte-Carlo based simulation…
The STEREO experiment is designed to test the hypothesis of light sterile neutrinos being the cause of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly. It measures the antineutrino energy spectrum from the compact core of the ILL research reactor in six identical detector cells covering baselines between 9 and 11 m. Results from 119 days of reactor turned on and 211 days of reactor turned off are reported. Using a direct comparison between neutrino interaction rates of all cells, independent of any flux prediction, we find compatibility with the null oscillation hypothesis. The best fit point of the Reactor …
Search for a light sterile neutrino is currently a hot topic of neutrino physics, arising from the so-called gallium and reactor anomalies, in which a deficit of neutrinos was observed with respect to expectations. Such anomalies could be explained by short distance oscillations towards a sterile state, with $Δ\mathrm{m}^2\sim$1\,eV$^2$. The STEREO detector has been designed to track the electron anti-neutrino energy spectrum distortion from 3 to 8\,MeV due to such a new $L/E$ oscillation, and should therefore confirm or reject the light sterile neutrino hypothesis. Electron anti-neutrinos pro…
For a long time there were 3 main experimental indications in favor of the existence of sterile neutrinos: $\bar{ν_e}$ appearance in the $\bar{ν_μ}$ beam in the LSND experiment, $\bar{ν_e}$ flux deficit in comparison with theoretical expectations in reactor experiments, and $ν_e$ deficit in calibration runs with radioactive sources in the Ga solar neutrino experiments SAGE and GALEX. All three problems can be explained by the existence of sterile neutrinos with the mass square difference in the ballpark of $1~\mathrm{eV^2}$. Recently the MiniBooNE collaboration observed electron (anti)neutrino…
New generation of three reactor neutrino experiments have made definitive measurements of the smallest neutrino mixing angle theta13 in 2012, based on the disappearance of electron antineutrinos. More precise measurements of the mixing angle have been made as well as the squared mass difference between electron neutrinos. A rather large value of theta13 has opened a new window to find the CP violation phase and to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. Future reactor experiments, JUNO and RENO50, are proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make highly precise measurements of t…
Prospect measurements of neutrino oscillations with reactor neutrinos are reviewed in this document. The following items are described: neutrinos oscillations status, reactor neutrino experimental strategy, impact of uncertainties on the neutrino oscillation sensitivity and, finally, the experiments in the field. This is the synthesis of the talk delivered during the NOW2006 conference at Otranto (Italy) during September 2006.
Nuclear reactors are strong, pure and well localized sources of electron antineutrinos with energies in the few MeV range. Therefore they provide a suitable environment to study neutrino properties, in particular neutrino oscillation parameters. Recent predictions of the expected antineutrino flux at nuclear reactors are about 6% higher than the average rate measured in different experiments. This discrepancy, known as the reactor antineutrino anomaly, is significant at the 2.5σ level. Several new experiments are searching for the origin of this observed neutrino deficit. One hypothesis to be …
Nuclear reactors are one of the most intense, pure, controllable, cost-effective, and well-understood sources of neutrinos. Reactors have played a major role in the study of neutrino oscillations, a phenomenon that indicates that neutrinos have mass and that neutrino flavors are quantum mechanical mixtures. Over the past several decades reactors were used in the discovery of neutrinos, were crucial in solving the solar neutrino puzzle, and allowed the determination of the smallest mixing angle $θ_{13}$. In the near future, reactors will help to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to solv…
Present results from neutrino experiments at accelerators and nuclear reactors are reviewed with emphasis on neutrino oscillation searches. Future prospects in this field are also discussed.
The investigation of antineutrino-deuteron interaction at Krasnoyarsk reactor are discussed. The characteristics of the installation ''Deuteron'', present results and perspectives of Krasnoyarsk neutrino laboratory are presented.
In this document we will review the current status of reactor neutrino oscillation experiments and present their physics potentials for measuring the $θ_{13}$ neutrino mixing angle. The neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is currently a high-priority topic in the field of neutrino physics. There are currently three different reactor neutrino experiments, \textsc{Double Chooz}, \textsc{Daya Bay} and \textsc{Reno} and a few accelerator neutrino experiments searching for neutrino oscillations induced by this angle. A description of the reactor experiments searching for a non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ is …
We present the potential sensitivity of a future recoil detector for a first detection of the process of coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS). We use the Chooz reactor complex in France as our luminous source of reactor neutrinos. Leveraging the ability to cleanly separate the rate correlated with the reactor thermal power against (uncorrelated) backgrounds, we show that a 10 kilogram cryogenic bolometric array with 100 eV threshold should be able to extract a CE$ν$NS signal within one year of running.
Flux is an important source of uncertainties for a reactor neutrino experiment. It is determined from thermal power measurements, reactor core simulation, and knowledge of neutrino spectra of fuel isotopes. Past reactor neutrino experiments have determined the flux to (2-3)% precision. Precision measurements of mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by reactor neutrino experiments in the coming years will use near-far detector configurations. Most uncertainties from reactor will be canceled out. Understanding of the correlation of uncertainties is required for $θ_{13}$ experiments. Precise determination of rea…
The RENO experiment is a short baseline neutrino experiment in Korea aiming to measure the neutrino mixing angle theta_13 or set limit to sin^2(2 theta_13) less than 0.02. This document describes physics goals, experimental site, detector design, scintillator, electronics, calibration, simulation, and physics reach.
Anti-neutrino emission rates from nuclear reactors are determined from thermal power measurements and fission rate calculations. The uncertainties in these quantities for commercial power plants and their impact on the calculated interaction rates in electron anti-neutrino detectors is examined. We discuss reactor-to-reactor correlations between the leading uncertainties and their relevance to reactor anti-neutrino experiments.
The low energy part of the reactor neutrino spectra has not been experimentally measured. Its uncertainties limit the sensitivities in certain reactor neutrino experiments. The origin of these uncertainties are discussed, and the effects on measurements of neutrino interactions with electrons and nuclei are studied. Comparisons are made with existing results. In particular, the discrepancies between previous measurements with Standard Model expectations can be explained by an under-estimation of the low energy reactor neutrino spectra. To optimize the experimental sensitivities, measurements f…
We report measurement of reactor based electron anti-neutrinos from a prototype array of plastic scintillator bars ( mini-ISMRAN ) located inside Dhruva research reactor hall, BARC. The detector setup took data for 128 days for reactor on (RON) and 51 days for reactor off (ROFF) condition. A detailed analysis procedure is developed to select the anti-neutrino candidate events based on the energy deposition, number of bars hit as well as topological event selection criteria in position and time. Each of these selection criteria are compared with Monte Carlo based simulations and further an embe…
After the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ has been precisely measured by the reactor antineutrino experiments, one of the most important open questions left in neutrino physics is the neutrino mass hierarchy. Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) without exploring the matter effect. The JUNO site location is optimized to have the best sensitivity for the mass hierarchy determination. JUNO will employ a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector located in a laboratory 700 meters underground. The excellent energy resolution and PMT c…
This paper presents experimental requirements to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using reactor neutrinos. The detector shall be located at a baseline around 58 km from the reactor(s) to measure the energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) precisely. By applying Fourier cosine and sine transform to the L/E spectrum, features of the neutrino mass hierarchy can be extracted from the $|Δ{m}^2_{31}|$ and $|Δ{m}^2_{32}|$ oscillations. To determine the neutrino mass hierarchy above 90% probability, requirements to the baseline, the energy resolution, the energy scale uncertainty, t…
The analysis of experiments at nuclear reactors where inverse beta decay reaction positron spectrum was measured at different distances from reactor core is presented here. It was found that there appear three enclosed zones of neutrino oscillation parameters when joint analysis is applied on the $Δm^{2}-\sin^{2}2θ$ plane. The parameters that found are partially crossed with similar regions originating from other non reactor experiments where they observed neutrino oscillations having unusual mass parameter about 1 eV^2 and amplitude about 0.04. Confidence level for observed regions achieves t…
A new reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment, KASKA, is proposed to measure the unknown neutrino-mixing angle $θ_{13}$ using the world's most powerful Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. It will measure a very small deficit of reactor-neutrino flux using three identical detectors, two placed just close to the sources and one at a distance of about 1.8km. Its conceptual design and physics reach are discussed.
Precisely measuring $θ_{13}$ is one of the highest priority in neutrino oscillation study. Reactor experiments can cleanly determine $θ_{13}$. Past reactor neutrino experiments are reviewed and status of next precision $θ_{13}$ experiments are presented. Daya Bay is designed to measure $\sin^22θ_{13}$ to better than 0.01 and Double Chooz and RENO are designed to measure it to 0.02-0.03. All are heading to full operation in 2010. Recent improvements in neutrino moment measurement are also briefed.
Two neutrino mixing angles have been measured, and much of the neutrino community is turning its attention to the unmeasured mixing angle, $\quq$, whose best limit comes from the reactor neutrino experiment CHOOZ.\cite{bib:chooz} New two detector reactor neutrino experiments are being planned, along with more ambitious accelerator experiments, to measure or further limit $\quq$. Here I will overview how to measure $\quq$ using reactor neutrinos, mention some experiments that were considered and are not going forward, and review the current status of four projects: Double Chooz in France, Daya …
Double Chooz is a reactor neutrino experiment which investigates the last neutrino mixing angle; theta-13. It is necessary to measure reactor neutrino disappearance with precision 1% or better to detect finite value of theta-13. This requirement is the most strict compared to other reactor neutrino experiments performed so far. The Double Chooz experiment makes use of a number of techniques to reduce the possible errors to achieve the sensitivity. The detector is now under construction and it is expected to take first neutrino data in 2009 and to measure sin^22theta-13 with a sensitivity of 0.…
We shortly review past and future experiments at reactors aimed at searches for neutrino masses and mixing. We also consider new idea to search at Krasnoyarsk for small mixing angle oscillations in the atmosheric neutrino mass parameter region.
Neutrinos produced by nuclear reactors have played a major role in advancing our knowledge of the properties of neutrinos. The first direct detection of the neutrino, confirming its existence, was performed using reactor neutrinos. More recent experiments utilizing reactor neutrinos have also found clear evidence for neutrino oscillation, providing unique input for the determination of neutrino mass and mixing. Ongoing and future reactor neutrino experiments will explore other important issues, including the neutrino mass hierarchy and the search for sterile neutrinos and other new physics bey…
Providing an early warning of a galactic supernova using neutrino signals is of importance in studying both supernova dynamics and neutrino physics. The Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment, with a unique feature of multiple liquid scintillator detectors separated in space, is sensitive to the full energy spectrum of supernova burst electron-antineutrinos. By deploying 8 Antineutrino Detectors (ADs) in three different experimental halls, we obtain a more powerful and prompt rejection of muon spallation background than single-detector experiments. A dedicated supernova online trigger system emb…
A laboratory has been constructed by the TEXONO Collaboration at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Power Plant in Taiwan to study low energy neutrino physics. The facilities of the laboratory are described. A limit on the neutrino magnetic moment of $\rm{\munuebar < 1.3 \times 10^{-10} ~ \mub}$ at 90% confidence level has been achieved from measurements with a high-purity germanium detector. Other physics topics, as well as the various R&D program, are surveyed.
We carried out a study of neutrino detection at the experimental fast reactor JOYO using a 0.76 tons gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator detector. The detector was set up on the ground level at 24.3m from the JOYO reactor core of 140MW thermal power. The measured neutrino event rate from reactor on-off comparison was 1.11\pm1.24(stat.)\pm0.46(syst.)events/day. Although the statistical significance of the measurement was not enough, the background in such a compact detector at the ground level was studied in detail and MC simulation was found to describe the data well. A study for improvement…
The measurement of the last undetermined neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} is the main goal of the future experimental research on neutrino oscillations. At present, θ_{13} is only known to be much smaller than the two other mixing angles, θ_{12} and θ_{23}. The present bound, which is dominated by the result of the CHOOZ reactor experiment, is \sin^{2}2θ_{13}<0.08 (at 90 % confidence level). However, it is widely recognized that the potential of reactor anti-neutrino disappearance experiments has not been fully exploited yet. A rich experimental program is underway, which aims at exploring in the …
Determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy using a reactor neutrino experiment at $\sim$60 km is analyzed. Such a measurement is challenging due to the finite detector resolution, the absolute energy scale calibration, as well as the degeneracies caused by current experimental uncertainty of $|Δm^2_{32}|$. The standard $χ^2$ method is compared with a proposed Fourier transformation method. In addition, we show that for such a measurement to succeed, one must understand the non-linearity of the detector energy scale at the level of a few tenths of percent.
Search for New Physics beyond the Standard Model is the main direction in particle physics nowadays. There are several experimental hints of New Physics. The most statistically significant (5-6$σ$) are the hints of eV mass scale sterile neutrinos. They come from antineutrino disappearance in reactor experiments, $ν_e$ disappearance in experiments with very powerful radioactive sources, and electron (anti)neutrino appearance in the muon (anti)neutrino beams. Very important results in this field were obtained in 2021 by the BEST, MicroBooNE, and Neutrino-4 collaborations as well as by several ot…
Several observed anomalies in neutrino oscillation data could be explained by a hypothetical fourth neutrino separated from the three standard neutrinos by a squared mass difference of a few 0.1 eV$^2$ or more. This hypothesis can be tested with MCi neutrino electron capture sources ($^{51}$Cr) or kCi antineutrino $β$-source ($^{144}$Ce) deployed inside or next to a large low background neutrino detector. In particular, the compact size of this source coupled with the localization of the interaction vertex lead to an oscillating pattern in event spatial (and possibly energy) distributions that…
One of the most abundant man-made sources of low energy (few~MeVs) neutrinos, reactor neutrino, is not only useful for studying neutrino properties, but it is also used in practical applications. In this study, we investigate the practical use of reactor neutrino detectors for nuclear safeguard in Vietnam, specifically at the Dalat Nuclear Reactor, a future research facility, and presumably commercial reactors with 500~kW, 10~MW, and 1000~MW thermal powers, respectively. We compute the rate of observed inverted beta decay events, as well as the statistical significance of extracting isotope co…
A Collaboration comprising Taiwan and mainland Chinese scientists has been built up since 1996 to pursue a experimental program in neutrino and astro-particle physics in Taiwan. A pilot experiment to be performed at the Nuclear Power Station II in Taiwan is now under intense preparation. It will make use of a 600 kg CsI(Tl) crystal calorimeter to study various neutrino interactions. The feasibility of performing a long baseline reactor neutrino experiment will also be investigated. The conceptual design and the physics to be addressed by the pilot experiment are presented.
We review the status and the results of reactor neutrino experiments. Long baseline oscillation experiments at Palo Verde and Chooz have provided limits for the oscillation parameters while the recently proposed Kamland experiment at a baseline of more than 100km is now in the planning stage. We also describe the status of neutrino magnetic moment experiments at reactors.
Double Chooz experiment will search for a disappearance of the reactor neutrinos from Chooz reactor cores in Ardenne, France, in order to detect the yet unknown neutrino oscillation angle θ13. The far detector was completed in 2010 and data-taking has started in spring 2011. Status of data-taking is presented and some performance plots from physics data are shown in this paper for the first time. Also the prospect of experimental sensitivity is presented, in light of recent indication from T2K for a non-zero θ13 value.
In this paper I give an overview of the status of neutrino oscillation experiments performed using nuclear reactors as sources of neutrinos. I review the present generation of experiments (Chooz and Palo Verde) with baselines of about 1 km as well as the next generation that will search for oscillations with a baseline of about 100 km. While the present detectors provide essential input towards the understanding of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly, in the future, the KamLAND reactor experiment represents our best opportunity to study very small mass neutrino mixing in laboratory conditions. In…
Numbers of accelerator and reactor neutrino oscillation experiments aiming to search finite value of $θ_{13}$ are starting within a few years. T2K experiment is a next generation long baseline neutrino experiment starts on 2009, in Japan. A main goal of the T2K experiment is to discover a finite $θ_{13}$ by observing $ν_e$ appearance. Determining $θ_{13}$ leads a next search of CP violation in the lepton sector. Status of T2K experiment and prospects for CP measurement are reported in the report.
The Coulomb enhancement of low energy electrons in nuclear beta decay generates sharp cutoffs in the accompanying antineutrino spectrum at the beta decay endpoint energies. It has been conjectured that these features will interfere with measuring the effect of a neutrino mass hierarchy on an oscillated nuclear reactor antineutrino spectrum. These sawtooth-like features will appear in detailed reactor antineutrino spectra, with characteristic energy scales similar to the oscillation period critical to neutrino mass hierarchy determination near a 53 km baseline. However, these sawtooth-like dist…
This article reports the optimized experimental requirements to determine neutrino mass hierarchy using electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) generated in a nuclear reactor. The features of the neutrino mass hierarchy can be extracted from the $|Δm^{2}_{31}|$ and $|Δm^{2}_{32}|$ oscillations by applying the Fourier sine and cosine transform to the $L/E$ spectrum. To determine the neutrino mass hierarchy above 90\% probability, the requirements on the energy resolution as a function of the baseline are studied at $\sin 2θ_{13}=0.1$. If the energy resolution of the neutrino detector is less than $0…
We review the status and the results of reactor neutrino experiments, that toe the cutting edge of neutrino research. Short baseline experiments have provided the measurement of the reactor neutrino spectrum, and are still searching for important phenomena such as the neutrino magnetic moment. They could open the door to the measurement of coherent neutrino scattering in a near future. Middle and long baseline oscillation experiments at Chooz and KamLAND have played a relevant role in neutrino oscillation physics in the last years. It is now widely accepted that a new middle baseline disappear…
Over the last several years, experiments have conclusively demonstrated that neutrinos are massive and that they mix. There is now direct evidence for $ν_e$s from the Sun transforming into other active flavors while en route to the Earth. The disappearance of reactor $\barν_e$s, predicted under the assumption of neutrino oscillation, has also been observed. In this paper, recent results from solar and reactor neutrino experiments and their implications are reviewed. In addition, some of the future experimental endeavors in solar and reactor neutrinos are presented.
The $\sim 3σ$ discrepancy between the predicted and observed reactor anti-neutrino flux, known as the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly, continues to intrigue. The recent discovery of an unexpected bump in the reactor anti-neutrino spectrum, as well as indications that the flux deficit is different for different fission isotopes seems to disfavour the explanation of the anomaly in terms of sterile neutrino oscillations. We critically review this conclusion in view of all available data on electron (anti)neutrino disappearance. We find that the sterile neutrino hypothesis cannot be rejected based o…
The Double Chooz experiment is meant to search for the neutrino mixing angle theta13 taking advantage of the neutrinos generated at the nuclear power plant of Chooz. Double Chooz relies on neutrino flux measurements at two different locations, the so-called far and near detectors, although the first phase runs only with the far detector. The commissioning of the far detector started in January 2011 and first results improving the current limit on theta13 are expected by the summer 2011. The status of the Double Chooz experiment is presented.
