In this paper, which is the first in a series of papers devoted to a detailed analysis of the death line of radio pulsars, we consider a possibility of producing secondary particles at a sufficiently long pulsar period P. To this end, we reconsidered the potential drop necessary for secondary plasma generation in the inner gap over magnetic polar caps. Our research made it possible to refine the conditions for generating secondary plasma, such as the multiplicity of the production of secondary particles and their spatial distribution. Our research also made it possible to further quantitatively analyse the dependence of the possibility of secondary plasma generation on all parameters, including the inclination angle of the magnetic axis to the rotation axis, the polar cap size and the magnetic field geometry.
Pulsar death line can be defined in $P-\dot{P}$ diagram. Traditionally, radio-loud pulsars are supposed to locate above the death line where is the radio-loud region. With the development of observational equipment, the observational properties of the neutron star are remarkably diverse. In $P-\dot{P}$ diagram, some of the special sources are radio-quiet but lie above the death line. From the definition of the pulsar death line, different equation of states for neutron star or strange star results in different death lines. We discuss the influence of the equation of state on the pulsar death l…
In this paper, which is the second in a series of papers, we analyse what parameters can determine the width of the radio pulsar 'death valley' in the $P$-${\dot P}$ diagram. Using exact expression for the maximum potential drop, which can be realised over magnetic polar caps and the corresponding threshold for the secondary plasma production determined in Paper I, we analyse in detail the observed distribution of pulsars taking into account all the possible parameters (radius $R$ and moment of inertia of a neutron star $I_{\rm r}$, high-energy tail in the $γ$-quanta energy distribution giving…
We analytically investigate the condition for a particle accelerator to be active in the outer magnetosphere of a rotation-powered pulsar. Within the accelerator (or the gap), magnetic-field-aligned electric field accelerates electrons and positrons, which emit copious gamma-rays via curvature process. If one of the gamma-rays emitted by a single pair materializes as a new pair on average, the gap is self-sustained. However, if the neutron-star spin-down rate decreases below a certain limit, the gap becomes no longer self-sustained and the gamma-ray emission ceases. We explicitly compute the m…
A new model of the pulsar force-free magnetosphere is suggested, which includes the presence of the polar, outer and slot gaps. It is based on a new exact solution of the pulsar equation in the form of an offset monopole and the resultant split-offset monopole scheme.
We investigated the pulsar radio luminosity ($L$), emission efficiency (ratio of radio luminosity to its spin-down power $\dot{E}$), and death line in the diagram of magnetic field (B) versus spin period (P), and found that the dependence of pulsar radio luminosity on its spin-down power ($L-\dot{E}$) is very weak, shown as $L\sim\dot{E}^{0.06}$, which deduces an equivalent inverse correlation between emission efficiency and spin-down power as $ξ\sim \dot{E}^{-0.94}$. Furthermore, we examined the distributions of radio luminosity of millisecond and normal pulsars, and found that, for the simil…
We investigate the evaporation of close-by pulsar companions, such as planets, asteroids, and white dwarfs, by induction heating. Assuming that the outflow energy is dominated by a Poynting flux (or pulsar wave) at the location of the companions, we calculate their evaporation timescales, by applying the Mie theory. Depending on the size of the companion compared to the incident electromagnetic wavelength, the heating regime varies and can lead to a total evaporation of the companion. In particular, we find that inductive heating is mostly inefficient for small pulsar companions, although it i…
The Vela supernova remnant is the closest supernova remnant to Earth containing an active pulsar, the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833-45). This pulsar is the archetype of the middle-aged pulsar class and powers a bright pulsar wind nebula (PWN), Vela-X, spanning a region of 2° x 3° south of the pulsar and observed in the radio, X-ray and very high energy gamma-ray domains. The detection of the Vela-X PWN by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) was reported in the first year of the mission. Subsequently, we have re-investigated this complex region and performed a detailed morphological and spectral anal…
The pulsar wind model is updated by considering the effect of particle density and pulsar death. It can describe both the short term and long term rotational evolution of pulsars consistently. It is applied to model the rotational evolution of the Crab pulsar. The pulsar is spun down by a combination of magnetic dipole radiation and particle wind. The parameters of the Crab pulsar, including magnetic field, inclination angle, and particle density are calculated. The primary particle density in acceleration region is about 10^3 times the Goldreich-Julian charge density. The lower braking index …
We investigate the birthrate problem for low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and millisecond radio pulsars (MRPs) in this paper. We consider intermediate-mass and low-mss X-ray binaries (I/LMXBs) as the progenitors of MRPs, and calculate their evolutionary response to the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) both semi-analytically and numerically. With typical value (~1 Gyr) of the LMXB lifetime, one may expect comparable birthrates of LMXBs and MRPs, but the calculated number of LMXBs is an order of magnitude higher than observed in the Galaxy. Instead, we suggest that the birthrate problem could be …
Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) represent nearly half of the more than 160 currently known $γ$-ray pulsars detected by the Large Area Telescope on the \textit{Fermi} satellite, and a third of all known MSPs are seen in $γ$ rays. The least energetic $γ$-ray MSPs enable us to probe the so-called deathline for high-energy emission, i.e., the spin-down luminosity limit under which pulsars (PSRs) cease to produce detectable high-energy radiation. Characterizing the MSP luminosity distribution helps to determine their contribution to the Galactic diffuse $γ$-ray emission. We made use of the high-quality …
The inductive electric field is unjustifiably neglected in most models for pulsar electrodynamics; it cannot be screened by the magnetospheric plasma, and it is not small in comparison with the corotation electric field. The perpendicular component of the inductive electric field implies a drift motion that is inconsistent with corotation at any angular velocity. Some implications of the inductive electric field and the associated drift motion are discussed.
We calculate the momentum given to a proto neutron star during the first 10 seconds after temperature equilibrium is reached, using recent evidence of sterile neutrinos and a measurement of the mixing angle. This is a continuation of an earlier estimate with a wide range of possible mixing angles. Using the new mixing angle we find that sterile neutrinos can account for the observed pulsar velocities.
In the standard picture of radio pulsars, the radio emission arises from a set of open magnetic field lines, the extent of which is primarily determined by the pulsar's spin period, P, and the emission height. We have used a database of parameters from 600 pulsars to show that the observed profile width, W, follows W proportional to P^-0.3 albeit with a large scatter, emission occurs from heights below 400 km and that the beam is underfilled. Furthermore, the prevalence in the data for long period pulsars to have relatively wide profiles can only be explained if the angle between the magnetic …
Glitches are important to understand the internal structure of neutron stars. They are studied using timing observations. The best studied neutron star in this respect is the Crab Pulsar. The first glitch recorded in this pulsar occurred in 1969 Sep, at an epoch when timing observations were still in their infancy, the regularity of the observations was relatively poor, and errors on the observations were relatively high. Lyne et al. (1993) analyzed most of the available data using modern techniques, and showed that this was a typical glitch of the Crab pulsar, with typical glitch parameters. …
We present a global kinetic plasma simulation of an axisymmetric pulsar magnetosphere with self-consistent $e^\pm$ pair production. We use the particle-in-cell method and log-spherical coordinates with a grid size $4096\times 4096$. This allows us to achieve a high voltage induced by the pulsar rotation and investigate pair creation in a young pulsar far from the death line. We find the following. (1) The energy release and $e^\pm$ creation are strongly concentrated in the thin, Y-shaped current sheet, with a peak localized in a small volume at the Y-point. (2) The Y-point is shifted inward fr…
We are starting a project to find $γ$-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) among the unidentified sources detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the {Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi)}, by radio observations. The selection of good candidates from analysis of the LAT data is an important part of the project. Given that there is more than 10 years worth of LAT data and the advent of the newly released LAT 8-year point source list (FL8Y), we have conducted a selection analysis, on the basis of our previous analysis, and report the results here. Setting the requirements for the unident…
Aims: To provide a significantly improved probability distribution for the H-test for periodicity in X-ray and $γ$-ray arrival times, which is already extensively used by the $γ$-ray pulsar community. Also, to obtain an analytical probability distribution for stacked test statistics in the case of a search for pulsed emission from an ensemble of pulsars where the significance per pulsar is relatively low, making individual detections insignificant on their own. This information is timely given the recent rapid discovery of new pulsars with the Fermi-LAT t $γ$-ray telescope. Methods: Approximat…

We present a detailed study of the gamma-ray emission from the direction of the star-forming region W30 based on a decade of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data in the 0.3-300 GeV photon energy range. The morphological and spectral analyses allow us to resolve the gamma-ray emission into two extended structures from different origins. One of them mostly overlaps with the supernova remnant (SNR) G8.7-0.1 and has a soft spectrum that resembles with the spectra of other middle-aged SNRs interacting with molecular clouds. The other shows remarkable spatial and spectral consistency with the TeV emi…

I present an analysis of the deepest X-ray exposure of a radio millisecond pulsar (MSP) to date, an X-ray Multi Mirror-Newton European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic and timing observation of the nearest known MSP, PSR J0437--4715. The timing data clearly reveal a secondary broad X-ray pulse offset from the main pulse by $\sim$0.55 in rotational phase. In the context of a model of surface thermal emission from the hot polar caps of the neutron star, this can be plausibly explained by a magnetic dipole field that is significantly displaced from the stellar center. Such an offset, if common…
We investigate the effect of a distorted neutron star dipole magnetic field on pulsar pair cascade multiplicity and pair death lines. Using a simple model for a distorted dipole field that produces an offset polar cap, we derive the accelerating electric field above the polar cap in space charge limited flow. We find that even a modest azimuthally asymmetric distortion can significantly increase the accelerating electric field on one side of the polar cap and, combined with a smaller field line radius of curvature, leads to larger pair multiplicity. The death line for producing pairs by curvat…

There is solid observational evidence on the existence of massive, $M\sim 1~M_\odot$, highly magnetized white dwarfs (WDs) with surface magnetic fields up to $B\sim 10^9$ G. We show that, if in addition to these features, the star is fast rotating, it can become a rotation-powered pulsar-like WD and emit detectable high-energy radiation. We infer the values of the structure parameters (mass, radius, moment of inertia), magnetic field, rotation period and spin-down rates of a WD pulsar death-line. We show that WDs above the death-line emit blackbody radiation in the soft X-ray band via the magn…
It is shown that the time-variability inherent in the ion-proton polar cap leads naturally to growth of Langmuir modes on narrow bundles of magnetic flux lines and that the observed size of micropulses is consistent with the smallest such bundle that can plausibly support the growth of the modes. The polarization of integrated profiles is revisited, specifically, the pi/2 position-angle jumps that are frequently observed accompanied by a zero in polarization. The fact that radiation emitted above ion-proton polar caps is not tangential to the local flux lines but has a finite angular distribut…
We investigate the combined evolution of the dipolar surface magnetic field (B$_{s}$) and the spin-period (P$_s$) of known magnetars and high magnetic field (B$_s$ $ \gtrsim 10^{13}$~G) radio pulsars. We study the long term behaviour of these objects assuming a simple ohmic dissipation of the magnetic field. Identifying the regions (in the P$_s$-B$_s$ plane) in which these neutron stars would likely move into, before crossing the death-line to enter the pulsar graveyard, we comment upon the possible connection between the magnetars and other classes of neutron stars.
We study the magnetospheric activity in the polar cap region of pulsars under stellar oscillations. The toroidal oscillation of the star propagates into the magnetosphere, which provides additional voltage due to unipolar induction, changes Goldreich-Julian charge density from the traditional value due to rotation, and hence, influences particle acceleration. We present a general solution of the effect of oscillations within the framework of the inner vacuum gap model, and consider three different inner gap modes controlled by curvature radiation, inverse Compton scattering, and two photon ann…
Neutron star magnetic fields may have polar caps (PC) that are offset from the dipole axis, through field-line sweepback near the light cylinder or non-symmetric currents within the star. The effects of such offsets on electron-positron pair cascades are investigated, using simple models of dipole magnetic fields with small distortions that shift the PCs by different amounts or directions. Using a Monte Carlo pair cascade simulation, we explore the changes in the pair spectrum, multiplicity and energy flux across the PC, as well as the trends in pair flux and pair energy flux with spin-down lu…
The spin down behaviors of SGR 0418+5729 are investigated. The pulsar spin down model of Contopoulos & Spitkovsky (2006) is applied to SGR 0418+5729. It is shown that SGR 0418+5729 lies below the pulsar death line and its rotation-powered magnetospheric activities may therefore have stopped. The compact star is now spun down by the magnetic dipole moment perpendicular to its rotation axis. Our calculations show that under these assumption there is the possibility of SGR 0418+5729 having a strong dipole magnetic field, if there is a small magnetic inclination angle. Its dipole magnetic field ma…
We have programmed a full simulation of the open field lines above the polar cap of a magnetized pulsar, using time dependent Particle In Cell (PIC) numerical code (Birdsall and Langdon 1991). We consider the case of free ejection of electrons from the star surface, a Space Charge Limited Flow (SCLF) model. We report here the first results of the simulation. Electrons are accelerating along the open field lines to the flat space-time SCLF maximum Lorentz factor prediction, with oscillation pattern. Than we add the General Relativistic Frame Dragging correction that provide the particles the hi…
The partially screened vacuum gap model (PSG) for the inner acceleration region in normal radio pulsars, a variant of the pure vacuum gap model, attempts to account for the observed thermal X-ray emission from polar caps and the subpulse drifting timescales. We have used this model to explain the presence of death lines, and extreme location of PSR J2144$-$3933 in the $P-\dot{P}$ diagram. This model requires maintaining the polar cap near a critical temperature and the presence of non-dipolar surface magnetic field to form the inner acceleration region. In the PSG model, thermostatic regulatio…
We investigate the conditions for radio emission in rotating and oscillating magnetars, by focusing on the main physical processes determining the position of their death-lines in the P-\dot{P} diagram, i.e. of those lines that separate the regions where the neutron star may be radio-loud or radio-quiet. After using the general relativistic expression for the electromagnetic scalar potential in the magnetar magnetosphere, we find that larger compactness parameters of the star as well as larger inclination angles between the rotation axis and the magnetic moment produce death-lines well above t…
We explore the burst energy distribution of fast radio bursts (FRBs) in the low-twist magnetar model of Wadiasingh and Timokhin (2019). Motivated by the power-law fluence distributions of FRB 121102, we propose an elementary model for the FRB luminosity function of individual repeaters with an inversion protocol which directly relates the power-law distribution index of magnetar short burst fluences to that for FRBs. The protocol indicates the FRB energy scales virtually linearly with crust/field dislocation amplitude, if magnetar short bursts prevail in the magnetoelastic regime. Charge starv…
We revisit the population synthesis of isolated radio-pulsars incorporating recent advances on the evolution of the magnetic field and the angle between the magnetic and rotational axes from new simulations of the magneto-thermal evolution and magnetosphere models, respectively. An interesting novelty in our approach is that we do not assume the existence of a death line. We discuss regions in parameter space that are more consistent with the observational data. In particular, we find that any broad distribution of birth spin periods with $P_0\lesssim 0.5$ s can fit the data, and that if the a…
Fast reconnection operating in magnetically dominated plasmas is often invoked in models for magnetar giant flares, for magnetic dissipation in pulsar winds, or to explain the gamma-ray flares observed in the Crab nebula, hence its investigation is of paramount importance in high-energy astrophysics. Here we study, by means of two dimensional numerical simulations, the linear phase and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of the tearing instability within the framework of relativistic resistive magnetohydrodynamics, as appropriate in situations where the Alfven velocity approaches the speed of l…
The radio pulsar GLEAM-X J162759.5-523504.3 has an extremely long spin period ($P = 1091.17\, \mbox{s}$), and yet seemingly continues to spin down rapidly ($\dot{P} < 1.2 \times 10^{-9}\, \mbox{ss}^{-1}$). The magnetic field strength that is implied, if the source is a neutron star undergoing magnetic dipole braking, could exceed $10^{16}\,\mbox{G}$. This object may therefore be the most magnetised neutron star observed to date. In this paper, a critical analysis of a magnetar interpretation for the source is provided. (i) A minimum polar magnetic field strength of $B \sim 5 \times 10^{15}\,\m…
