The primary component of the multiple star phi Dra is one of the brightest magnetic chemically peculiar stars in the northern sky. Here we report results of a comprehensive study of the rotational photometric variability, binarity, magnetic field geometry, and surface chemical spot structure for this star. We derived a precise photometric rotational period of 1.71650213(21) d based on one year of TESS nearly continuous space observations and discovered modulation of the stellar light curve with the phase of the 127.9-d binary orbit due to the light time travel effect. We revised parameters of the binary orbit and detected spectroscopic contribution of the secondary. A tomographic mapping technique was applied to the average intensity and circular polarisation profiles derived from Narval high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. This analysis yielded a detailed map of the global magnetic field topology together with the surface distributions of Si, Cr, and Fe abundances. Magnetic mapping demonstrates that the surface field structure of phi Dra is dominated by a distorted dipolar component with a peak field strength of 1.4 kG and a large asymmetry between the poles. Chemical maps show an enhancement of Cr, Fe and, to a lesser extent, Si in a series of spots encircling intersections of the magnetic and rotational equators. These chemical spot geometries do not directly correlate with either the local field strength or the field inclination.
The star phi Dra comprises a spectroscopic binary and a third star that together form a visual triple system. It is one of the brightest chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper main sequence. Despite these facts, no comprehensive study of its multiplicity has been performed yet. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the triple system based on available measurements. We use radial velocities taken from four sources in the literature in a re-analysis of the inner spectroscopic binary (Aab). An incorrect value of the orbital period of the inner system Aab about 27 days was accepted …
Context: The presence of heavier chemical elements in stellar atmospheres influences the spectral energy distribution (SED) of stars. An uneven surface distribution of these elements, together with flux redistribution and stellar rotation, are commonly believed to be the primary causes of the variability of chemically peculiar (CP) stars. Aims: We aim to model the photometric variability of the CP star PHI Dra based on the assumption of inhomogeneous surface distribution of heavier elements and compare it to the observed variability of the star. We also intend to identify the processes that co…
We present the first temperature surface map of EK Dra from very-high-resolution spectra obtained with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) at the Large Binocular Telescope. Changes in spectral line profiles are inverted to a stellar surface temperature map using our $i$Map code. The long-term photometric record is employed to compare our map with previously published maps. Four cool spots were reconstructed, but no polar spot was seen. The temperature difference to the photosphere of the spots is between 990 and 280K. Two spots are reconstructed with a typical…
Observations and modelling of stars with near-solar masses in their early phases of evolution is critical for a better understanding of how dynamos of solar-type stars evolve. We examine the chemical composition and the spot distribution of the pre-main-sequence solar analogue EK Dra. Using spectra from the HERMES Spectrograph (La Palma), we obtain the abundances of 23 elements with respect to the solar ones, which lead to a $[{\rm Fe/H}]=0.03$, with significant overabundance of Li and Ba. The s-process elements Sr, Y, and Ce are marginally overabundant, while Co, Ni, Cu, Zn are marginally def…
The magnetic fields, activity and dynamos of young solar-type stars can be empirically studied using time-series of spectropolarimetric observations and tomographic imaging techniques such as Doppler imaging and Zeeman Doppler imaging. In this paper we use these techniques to study the young Sun-like star EK Draconis (Sp-Type: G1.5V, HD 129333) using ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and NARVAL at the Tèlescope Bernard Lyot. This multi-epoch study runs from late 2006 until early 2012. We measure high levels of chromospheric activity indicating an active, and varying, chromosphere.…

Context. TW Draconis is one of the best studied Algol-type eclipsing binaries. There is significant evidence for miscellaneous physical processes between interacting binary components manifesting themselves by period and light curve changes. Aims. Obtaining new set of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we analysed them together with the older spectroscopic and photometric data to build model of this eclipsing system with respect to observed changes of O-C diagram and light curve. Methods. Reduction of new spectra was carried out in the IRAF and SPEFO programs. Radial velocities were d…
We present high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the spectroscopic binary Chi Dra. Spectral lines in the spectrum of the main component Chi Dra A show variable Zeeman displacement, which confrms earlier suggestions about the presence of a weak magnetic field on the surface of this star. Within about 2 years of time base of our observations, the longitudinal component BL of the magnetic field exhibits variation from -11.5 +/- 2.5 G to +11.1 +/- 2.1 G with a period of about 23 days. Considering the rotational velocity of Chi DraA in the literature and that newly measured in this wo…

Multiwavelength Campaign Observations of a Young Solar-type Star, EK Draconis. II. Understanding Prominence Eruption through Data-Driven Modeling and Observed Magnetic Environment
New CCD photometric observations of BX Dra were obtained for 26 nights from 2009 April to 2010 June. The long-term photometric behaviors of the system are presented from detailed studies of the period and light variations, based on the historical data and our new observations. All available light curves display total eclipses at secondary minima and inverse O'Connell effects with Max I fainter than Max II, which are satisfactorily modeled by adding the slightly time-varying hot spot on the primary star. A total of 87 times of minimum light spanning over about 74 yrs, including our 22 timing me…
Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars have been considered as non-magnetic and non-variable chemically peculiar (CP) stars for a long time. However, recent discoveries of the variability in spectral line profiles have suggested an inhomogeneous surface distribution of chemical elements in some HgMn stars. From the studies of other CP stars it is known that magnetic field plays a key role in the formation of surface spots. All attempts to find magnetic fields in HgMn stars have yielded negative results. In this study, we investigate the possible presence of a magnetic field in phi Phe (HD 11753) and r…
We present the most precise to date orbital and physical parameters of the well known short period (P=5.975 d), eccentric (e=0.3) double-lined spectroscopic binary BY Draconis, a prototype of a class of late-type, active, spotted flare stars. We calculate the full spectroscopic/astrometric orbital solution by combining our precise radial velocities (RVs) and the archival astrometric measurements from the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI). The RVs were derived based on the high resolution echelle spectra taken between 2004 and 2008 with the Keck I/HIRES, Shane/CAT/HamSpec and TNG/SARG telesc…
We present more than 1000-day long photometry of EY Draconis in BV(RI)C passbands. The changes in the light curve are caused by the spottedness of the rotating surface. Modelling of the spotted surface shows that there are two large active regions present on the star on the opposite hemispheres. The evolution of the surface patterns suggests a flip-flop phenomenon. Using Fourier analysis, we detect a rotation period of P_rot=0.45875d, and an activity cycle with P~350d, similar to the 11-year long cycle of the Sun. This cycle with its year-long period is the shortest one ever detected on active…
We examine the hypothesis that magnetic fields are inflating the radii of fully convective main sequence stars in detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs). The magnetic Dartmouth stellar evolution code is used to analyze two systems in particular: Kepler-16 and CM Draconis. Magneto-convection is treated assuming stabilization of convection and also by assuming reductions in convective efficiency due to a turbulent dynamo. We find that magnetic stellar models are unable to reproduce the properties of inflated fully convective main sequence stars, unless strong interior magnetic fields in excess of 10…
Aims: In this study, we aim at investigating the properties of the active longitude system of the young solar analogue HD 116956 in detail, especially concentrating on determining the rotation period of the spot-generating mechanism with respect to the photometric rotation period of the star itself. Because the nonparametric approach, like the Kuiper method, can only give the period of active longitudes, we formulate a new method that can determine the parameters the active longitude distribution uniquely. Methods: For this purpose, we have developed an analysis method, based on Bayesian stati…
