When semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructures are stacked the twist angle and lattice mismatch leads to a periodic moiré potential. As the angle between the layers changes, so do the electronic properties. As the angle approaches 0- or 60-degrees interesting characteristics and properties such as modulations in the band edges, flat bands, and confinement are predicted to occur. Here we report scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on the band gaps and band modulations in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures with near 0 degree rotation (R-type) and near 60 degree rotation (H-type). We find a modulation of the band gap for both stacking configurations with a larger modulation for R-type than for H-type as predicted by theory. Furthermore, local density of states images show that electrons are localized differently at the valence band and conduction band edges.
One-dimensional organic heterostructures consisting of contiguous lines of CF3- and OCH3-substituted styrene molecules on silicon are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio simulation. Dipole fields of OCH3-styrene molecules are found to enhance conduction through molecules near OCH3-styrene/CF3-styrene heterojunctions. Those of CF3-styrene depress transport through the nearby silicon. Thus choice of substituents and their attachment site on host molecules provide a means of differentially tuning molecule and substrate transport at the molecular scale.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images are obtained for the first time on few layer and twisted multilayer epitaxial graphene states synthesized on n+ 6H-SiC a-plane non-polar surface. The twisted graphene is determined to have a rotation angle of 5.4° between the top two layers, by comparing moiré patterns from stick and ball models of bilayer graphene to experimentally obtained images. Furthermore, the experimental moiré pattern shows dynamic behavior, continuously shuffling between two stable surface arrangements one bond length apart. The moiré pattern shifts by more than 1 nm, making …
In bilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the twist angle between layers can be used to introduce a highly regular periodic potential modulation on a length scale that is large compared to the unit cell. In such structures, correlated states can emerge, in which excitons in the heterostructure are strongly localized to the potential minima due to exciton-exciton interactions. We explore the transition between Mott and extended exciton phases in terms of a moiré-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Hopping and on-site interaction parameters are obtained from a Wannier representation …
Moiré superlattices of van der Waals heterostructures provide a powerful new way to engineer the electronic structures of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Many novel quantum phenomena have emerged in different moiré heterostructures, such as correlated insulators, superconductors, and Chern insulators in graphene systems and moiré excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) systems. Twisted phosphorene offers another attractive system to explore moiré physics because phosphorene features an anisotropic rectangular lattice, different from the isotropic hexagonal lattice in graphene and TM…
We investigate the twist angle dependence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) proximity effects and charge-to-spin conversion (CSC) in graphene/WSe$_2$ heterostructures from first principles. The CSC is shown to strongly depend on the twist angle, with both the spin Hall and standard Rashba-Edelstein efficiencies optimized at or near 30° twisting. Symmetry breaking due to twisting also gives rise to an unconventional Rashba-Edelstein effect, with electrically generated non-equilibrium spin densities possessing spins collinear to the applied electric field. We further discuss how the carrier doping co…
The twist angle in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers is a compelling degree of freedom that determines electron correlations and the period of lateral confinement of moiré excitons. Here we perform polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy of MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures. We demonstrate that by choosing suitable laser energies the twist angle between two monolayers can be measured directly on the assembled heterostructure. We show that the amplitude and polarization of the SHG signal from the heterostructure are determined by the twist angle between t…
Moiré superlattices of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures give rise to rich excitonic phenomena associated with the interlayer twist angle and induced changes in the involved quantum states. Theoretical calculations of excitons in such systems are typically based on model moiré potentials to mitigate the computational cost. However, an ab initio understanding of the electron-hole coupling dominating the excitations is crucial to realize the twist-induced modifications of the optical selection rules. In this work we use many-body perturbation theory to compute and analyze th…
The interplay between interlayer van der Waals interaction and intralayer lattice distortion can lead to structural reconstruction in slightly twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with the twist angle being smaller than a characteristic angle θc. Experimentally, the θc is demonstrated to be very close to the magic angle (θ ~ 1.05°). In this work, we address the transition between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures of the TBG across the magic angle by using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our experiment demonstrates that both the two structures are stable in the TBG around the magic a…
Assembling different two-dimensional (2D) crystals, covering a very broad range of properties, into van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures enables the unprecedented possibilities for combining the best of different ingredients in one objective material. So far, metallic, semiconducting, and insulating 2D crystals have been used successfully in making functional vdW heterostructures with properties by design. Here, we expand 2D superconducting crystals as a building block of the vdW hererostructures. A one-step growth of large-scale high-quality vdW heterostructures of graphene and 2D superconduc…
Artificially constructed van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) provide an ideal platform for realizing emerging quantum phenomena in condensed matter physics. Two methods for building vdWHs have been developed: stacking two-dimensional (2D) materials into a bilayer structure with different lattice constants, or with different orientations. The interlayer coupling stemming from commensurate or incommensurate superlattice pattern plays an important role in vdWHs for modulating the band structures and generating new electronic states. In this article, we review a series of novel quantum states d…
Quantum spin-liquid van der Waals magnets such as TaS$_2$, TaSe$_2$, and RuCl$_3$ provide a natural platform to explore new exotic phenomena associated with spinon physics, whose properties can be controlled by exchange proximity with ferromagnetic insulators such as CrBr$_3$. Here we put forward a twisted van der Waals heterostructure based on a quantum spin-liquid bilayer encapsulated between ferromagnetic insulators. We demonstrate the emergence of spinon flat bands and topological spinon states in such heterostructure, where the emergence of a topological gap is driven by the twist. We fur…
The strong spin-orbit interaction in the rare-earth elements ensures that even within a ferromagnetic state there is a substantial orbital contribution to the ferromagnetic moment, in contrast to more familiar transition metal systems, where the orbital moment is usually quenched. The orbital-dominant magnetization that is then possible within rare-earth systems facilitates the fabrication of entirely new magnetic heterostructures, and here we report a study of a particularly striking example comprising interfaces between GdN and SmN. Our investigation reveals a twisted magnetization arising f…
Artificially twisted heterostructures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer unprecedented control over their electronic and optical properties via the spatial modulation of interlayer interactions and structural reconstruction. Here we study twisted MoS2 bilayers in a wide range of twist angles near 0° using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy. We investigate the twist angle-dependence of the moiré pattern which is dominated by lattice reconstruction for small angles (<2°) leading to large triangular domains with rhombohedral stacking. Local spectroscopy measur…
Recent research showed that the rotational degree of freedom in stacking 2D materials yields great changes in the electronic properties. Here we focus on an often overlooked question: are twisted geometries stable and what defines their rotational energy landscape? Our simulations show how epitaxy theory breaks down in these systems and we explain the observed behaviour in terms of an interplay between flexural phonons and the interlayer coupling, governed by Moiré superlattice. Our argument applied to the well-studied MoS$_2$/Graphene system rationalize experimental results and could serve as…
A variety of correlated phases have recently emerged in select twisted van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures owing to their flat electronic dispersions. In particular, heterostructures of twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) manifest electric field-tunable correlated insulating (CI) states at all quarter fillings of the conduction band, accompanied by nearby states featuring signatures suggestive of superconductivity. Here, we report electrical transport measurements of tDBG in which we elucidate the fundamental role of spontaneous symmetry breaking within its correlated phase diagram. We obs…
When two-dimensional van der Waals materials are stacked to build heterostructures, moiré patterns emerge from twisted interfaces or from mismatch in lattice constant of individual layers. Relaxation of the atomic positions is a direct, generic consequence of the moiré pattern, with many implications for the physical properties. Moiré driven atomic relaxation may be naively thought to be restricted to the interfacial layers and thus irrelevant for multi-layered heterostructures. However, we provide experimental evidence for the importance of the three dimensional nature of the relaxation in tw…
The Wigner crystal state, first predicted by Eugene Wigner in 1934, has fascinated condensed matter physicists for nearly 90 years2-14. Studies of two-dimensional (2D) electron gases first revealed signatures of the Wigner crystal in electrical transport measurements at high magnetic fields2-4. More recently optical spectroscopy has provided evidence of generalized Wigner crystal states in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) moiré superlattices. Direct observation of the 2D Wigner crystal lattice in real space, however, has remained an outstanding challenge. Scanning tunneling microscopy (S…
Monolayer lateral heterostructure of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BNC) has attracted a growing attention mainly due to its tunable band-gap character and unique physical properties at interface. Hereby, we reported the first-time synthesis of a nearly freestanding h-BNC hybrid on a weakly coupled substrate of Ir (111), where graphene and h-BN possessing different surface heights and corrugations formed a perfect monolayer hybrid. With the aid of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we demonstrated that h-BN can patch alongside the boundary of pre-deposited graphene …
Van der Waals heterostructures obtained by artificially stacking two-dimensional crystals represent the frontier of material engineering, demonstrating properties superior to those of the starting materials. Fine control of the interlayer twist angle has opened new possibilities for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of these heterostructures. Twisted bilayer graphene with a strong interlayer coupling is a prototype of twisted heterostructure inheriting the intriguing electronic properties of graphene. Understanding the effects of the twist angle on its out-of-equilibrium optical properti…
Layered two-dimensional materials exhibit rich transport and optical phenomena in twisted or lattice-incommensurate heterostructures with spatial variations of interlayer hybridization arising from moiré interference effects. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of excitons in twisted heterobilayers and heterotrilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ stacks as representative realizations of twisted van der Waals bilayer and trilayer heterostructures, we observe contrasting optical signatures and interpret them in the theoretical framework of interlay…
Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals offer almost unlimited scope for the design of novel metamaterials. Here we demonstrate a room-temperature ferroelectric semiconductor that is assembled using mono- or few- layer MoS2. These van der Waals heterostructures feature broken inversion symmetry, which, together with the asymmetry of atomic arrangement at the interface of two 2D crystals, enables ferroelectric domains with alternating out-of-plane polarisation arranged into a twist-controlled network. The latter can be moved by applying out-of-plane electrical fields, as visualized…
STM based magnetotransport measurements of epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ 32 nm thick films with and without an internal LaMnO$_3$ layer (0-8 nm thick) grown on Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ are presented. The measurements reveal two types of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) with a magnitude of $\sim 0.1-1.5\%$. One LFMR contribution is identified as a conventional grain boundary/domain wall scattering through the symmetric I-V characteristics, high dependence on tip placements and insensitivity to introduction of LaMnO$_3$ layers. The other contribution originates from the reverse biased Nb dop…
The van der Waals heterostructures of allotropes of phosphorene ($α$- and $β-P$) with MoSe2 (H-, T-, ZT- and SO-MoSe2) are investigated in the framework of state-of-the-art density functional theory. The semiconducting heterostructures, $β$-P /H-MoSe2 and $α$-P / H-MoSe2, forms anti-type structures with type I and type II band alignments, respectively, whose bands are tunable with external electric field. $α$-P / ZT-MoSe2 and $α$-P / SO-MoSe2 form ohmic semiconductor-metal contacts while Schottky barrier in $β$-P / T-MoSe2 can be reduced to zero by external electric field to form ohmic contact…
Twist, as a simple and unique degree of freedom, could lead to enormous novel quantum phenomena in bilayer graphene. A small rotation angle introduces low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) approaching the Fermi level, which result in unusual correlated states in the bilayer graphene. It is reasonable to expect that the twist could also affect the electronic properties of few-layer graphene dramatically. However, such an issue has remained experimentally elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically studied a twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) w…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
Structural engineering of van der Waals heterostructures via stacking and twisting has recently been used to create moiré superlattices, enabling the realization of new optical and electronic properties in solid-state systems. In particular, moiré lattices in twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been shown to lead to exciton trapping, host Mott insulating and superconducting states, and act as unique Hubbard systems whose correlated electronic states can be detected and manipulated optically. Structurally, these twisted heterostructures also feature atomic reconstru…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures unravel a new platform to study strongly correlated quantum phases. The interlayer coupling in these heterostructures is sensitive to twist angles ($θ$) and key to controllably tune several exotic properties. Here, we demonstrate a systematic evolution of the interlayer coupling strength with twist angle in bilayer $\mathrm{MoS_{2}}$ using a combination of Raman spectroscopy and classical simulations. At zero doping, we show a \textit{monotonic} increment of the separation between the $\mathrm{A_{1g}}$ and $\mathrm{E^{1}_{2g}}$ mode frequencies as $θ$ dec…
The interlayer coupling can be used to engineer the electronic structure of van der Waals heterostructures (superlattices) to obtain properties that are not possible in a single material. So far research in heterostructures has been focused on commensurate superlattices with a long-ranged Moiré period. Incommensurate heterostructures with rotational symmetry but not translational symmetry (in analogy to quasicrystals) are not only rare in nature, but also the interlayer interaction has often been assumed to be negligible due to the lack of phase coherence. Here we report the successful growth …
Experiments on bilayer graphene unveiled a fascinating realization of stacking disorder where triangular domains with well-defined Bernal stacking are delimited by a hexagonal network of strain solitons. Here we show by means of numerical simulations that this is a consequence of a structural transformation of the moiré pattern inherent of twisted bilayer graphene taking place at twist angles $θ$ below a crossover angle $θ^{\star}=1.2^{\circ}$. The transformation is governed by the interplay between the interlayer van der Waals interaction and the in-plane strain field, and is revealed by a ch…
The unique physics found in moiré superlattices of twisted or lattice-mismatched atomic layers hold great promise for future quantum technologies. However, twisted configurations are typically thermodynamically unfavorable, making the accurate twist angle control in direct growth implausible. While rotationally aligned moiré superlattices based on lattice-mismatched layers such as WSe2/WS2 can be synthesized, they lack the critical tunability of the moiré period and the moiré formation mechanisms are not well-understood. Here, we report the scalable, thermodynamically driven van der Waals epit…

Angle-resolved photoemission is a direct probe of the momentum-resolved electronic structure and proved influential in the study of bulk crystals with novel electronic properties. Thanks to recent technical advances, this technique can now be applied for the first time for the study of van der Waals heterostructures built by stacking two-dimensional crystals. In this article we will present the current state of the art in angle-resolved photoemission measurements on two-dimensional materials and review this still young field. We will focus in particular on devices similar to those used in tran…
The electronic properties of the twisted InSe bilayer are studied by large-scale density functional theory. Spectral Function Unfolding reveals that the electronic structure of the twisted system can be described in terms of a combination of features of the bandstructures of the aligned InSe bilayer with different stacking configurations, enabling predictions of the band gap and the effective mass for holes. The effective mass for holes in the twisted InSe bilayer is shown to be influenced primarily by the interlayer distance. The intralayer and interlayer exciton binding energies are thus cal…
