Empirical relations between major UV and extreme UV spectral lines are one of the inputs for models of chromospheric and coronal spectral radiances and irradiances. They are also needed for the interpretation of some of the observations of the Solar Orbiter mission. We aim to determine an empirical relation between the intensities of the HI 121.6 nm and HeII 30.4 nm Lyman $α$ lines. Images at 121.6 nm from the Chromospheric Lyman Alpha Spectro Polarimeter (CLASP) and Multiple XUV Imager (MXUVI) sounding rockets were co-registered with simultaneous images at 30.4 nm from the EIT and AIA orbital telescopes in order to derive a spatially resolved relationship between the intensities. We have obtained a relationship between the HI 121.6 nm and HeII 30.4 nm intensities that is valid for a wide range of solar features, intensities, and activity levels. Additional SUMER data have allowed the derivation of another relation between the HI 102.5 nm (Ly$β$) and HeII 30.4 nm lines for quiet-Sun regions. We combined these two relationships to obtain a Ly$α$/Ly$β$ intensity ratio that is comparable to the few previously published results. The relationship between the HI 121.6~nm and HeII 30.4 nm lines is consistent with the one previously obtained using irradiance data. We have also observed that this relation is stable in time but that its accuracy depends on the spatial resolution of the observations. The derived Ly$α$/Ly$β$ intensity ratio is also compatible with previous results.

This work deals with the study of an erupting prominence embedded in the core of a CME and focuses on the derivation of the prominence plasma filling factor. We explore two methods to measure the prominence plasma filling factor that are based on the combination of visible-light and ultraviolet spectroscopic observations. Theoretical relationships for resonant scattering and collisional excitation are used to evaluate the intensity of the H I Lyman-α and Lyman-β lines, in two prominence points where simultaneous and cospatial LASCO-C2 and UVCS data were available. Thermodynamic and geometrical…
We study the capabilities of Lyman $β$ and the O I 1027 and 1028 Å spectral lines for understanding the properties of the chromosphere and transition region. The oxygen transitions are located in the wing of Lyman $β$ that is a candidate spectral line for the solar missions Solar Orbiter/SPICE and Solar-C (EUVST). We examine general spectroscopic properties of the three transitions in the quiet Sun by synthesizing them assuming non-local thermal equilibrium taking into account partial redistribution effects. We estimate the heights where the spectral lines are sensitive to the physical paramet…
We place empirical constraints on the yields from zero- and low-metallicity core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) using abundances measured in very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $\leq$ $-2$) Damped Lyman Alpha Absorbers (DLAs). For some abundance ratios ([N,Al,S/Fe]), VMP DLAs constrain the metal yields of the first SNe more reliably than VMP stars. We compile a large sample of high-S/N VMP DLAs from over 30 years of literature, most with high resolution spectral measurements. We infer the IMF-averaged CCSNe yield from the median values from the DLA abundance ratios of C, N, O, Al, Si, S, and Fe (over Fe…
The Chromospheric Lyman Alpha Spectropolarimeter (CLASP) observed the Sun in H I Lyman-α during a suborbital rocket flight on September 3, 2015. The Interface Region Imaging Telescope (IRIS) coordinated with the CLASP observations and recorded nearly simultaneous and co-spatial observations in the Mg II h&k lines. The Mg II h and Ly-α lines are important transitions, energetically and diagnostically, in the chromosphere. The canonical solar atmosphere model predicts that these lines form in close proximity to each other and so we expect that the line profiles will exhibit similar variability. …
Remote sensing experiments require high-accuracy, preferably sub-percent, line intensities and in response to this need we present computed room temperature line lists for six symmetric isotopologues of carbon dioxide: $^{13}$C$^{16}$O$_2$, $^{14}$C$^{16}$O$_2$, $^{12}$C$^{17}$O$_2$, $^{12}$C$^{18}$O$_2$, $^{13}$C$^{17}$O$_2$ and $^{13}$C$^{18}$O$_2$, covering the range 0-8000 \cm. Our calculation scheme is based on variational nuclear motion calculations and on a reliability analysis of the generated line intensities. Rotation-vibration wavefunctions and energy levels are computed using the D…
We present a new empirical model to predict solar energetic particle (SEP) event-integrated and peak intensity spectra between 10 and 130 MeV at 1 AU, based on multi-point spacecraft measurements from the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) satellite experiment. The analyzed data sample includes 32 SEP events occurring between 2010 and 2014, with a statistically significant proton signal at energies in excess of a few tens of MeV, …
New line lists are presented for the two most abundant water isotopologues; H$_{2}$$^{16}$O and H$_{2}$$^{18}$O. The H$_{2}$$^{16}$O line list extends to 25710 cm$^{-1}$ with intensity stabilities provided via ratios of calculated intensities obtained from two different semi-empirical potential energy surfaces. The line list for H$_{2}$$^{18}$O extends to 20000 cm$^{-1}$. The minimum intensity considered for all is $10^{-30}$ cm molecule$^{-1}$ at 296~K, assuming 100\% abundance for each isotopologue. Fluctuation of calculated intensities caused by changes in the underlying potential energy ar…
Recently an accurate analysis of absorption spectra of molecular hydrogen, observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, in the photosphere of white dwarf stars GD133 and GD29-38 was published in a Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 123002 (2014)], yielding a constraint on a possible dependence of the proton-electron mass ratio on a gravitational field of strength 10,000 times that at the Earth's surface. In the present paper further details of that study are presented, in particular a re-evaluation of the spectrum of the $B^1Σ_u^+ - X^1Σ_g^+ (v',v'')$ Lyman bands…
The ExoMol database aims to provide comprehensive molecular line lists for exoplanetary and other hot atmospheres. The data are expanded by inclusion of empirically derived line lists taken from the literature for a series of diatomic molecules, namely CH, NH, OH, AlCl, AlF, OH$^+$, CaF, MgF, KF, NaF, LiCl, LiF, MgH, TiH, CrH, FeH, C$_2$, CP, CN, CaH, and triplet N$_2$. Generally, these line lists are constructed from measured spectra using a combination of effective rotational Hamiltonian models for the line positions and ab initio (transition) dipole moments to provide intensities. This work…
The reconstruction of the differential emission measure (DEM) from observations of spectral line intensities provides information on the temperature distribution of the emission measure in the region observed. The inversion process is known to be highly unstable and it has been necessary to provide additional constraints, such as requiring that the DEM should be smooth. However, this is a non-physical constraint. The goal of this analysis is to make an empirical determination of the ability of a set of emission line intensities to constrain the reconstruction. Here, a simple model is used, by …
