This review deals with the inconsistency of inner dark matter density profiles in dwarf galaxies, known as the cusp-core problem. Particularly, we aim to focus on gas-poor dwarf galaxies. One of the most promising solutions to this cold dark matter small scale issue is the stellar feedback but it seems to be only designed for gas-rich dwarfs. However, in the regime of classical dwarfs, this core mechanism becomes negligible. Therefore, it is required to find solutions without invoking these baryonic processes as dark matter cores tend to persist even for these dwarfs, which are rather dark matter-dominated. Here we have presented two categories of solutions. One consists of creating dark matter cores from cusps within cold dark matter by altering the dark matter potential via perturbers. The second category gathers solutions which depict the natural emergence of dark matter cores in alternative theories. Given the wide variety of solutions, it becomes necessary to identify which mechanism dominates in the central region of galaxies by finding observational signatures left by them in order to highlight the true nature of dark matter.
Simulations of the clustering of cold dark matter yield dark-matter halos that have central density cusps, but observations of totally dark-matter dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxies imply that they do not have cuspy central density profiles. We use analytic calculations and numerical modelling to argue that whenever stars form, central density cusps are likely to be erased. Gas that accumulates in the potential well of an initially cuspy dark-matter halo settles into a disc. Eventually the surface density of the gas exceeds the threshold for fragmentation into self-gravitating clouds. The clo…
We compare the transverse velocity dispersions recently measured within the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy to the predictions of previously published dynamical models. These provide good fits to the observed number count and velocity dispersion profiles of metal-rich and metal-poor stars both in cored and in cusped potentials. At the projected radius where the proper motions were measured, these models predict transverse dispersions in the range 6 to 9.5 km/s, with the tangential dispersion about 1 km/s larger than the (projected) radial dispersion. Both dispersions are predicted to be about…
We apply a flexible parametric model, a combination of generalized Plummer profiles, to infer the shapes of the stellar density profiles of the Milky Way's satellite dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). We apply this model to 40 dSphs using star counts from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, PanStarrs-1 Survey, Dark Energy Survey, and Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey. Using mock data, we examine systematic errors associated with modelling assumptions and identify conditions under which our model can identify `non-standard' stellar density profiles that have central cusps and/or steepened outer slopes…
One of the leading scenarios for the formation of nuclear star clusters in galaxies is related to the orbital decay of globular clusters (GCs) and their subsequent merging, though alternative theories are currently debated. The availability of high-quality data for GCs structural and orbital parameters allow to test different nuclear star cluster formation scenarios. The Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy is the heaviest satellite of the Milky Way and it is the only known dwarf spheroidal hosting 5 GCs, whereas there are no clear signatures for the presence of a central massive black hole. …

We use high-resolution N-body simulations to follow the formation and evolution of tidal streams associated to dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). The dSph models are embedded in dark matter (DM) haloes with either a centrally-divergent 'cusp', or an homogeneous-density 'core'. In agreement with previous studies, we find that as tides strip the galaxy the evolution of the half-light radius and the averaged velocity dispersion follows well-defined tracks that are mainly controlled by the amount of mass lost. Crucially, the evolutionary tracks behave differently depending on the shape of the DM p…
The core-cusp problem is one of the controversial issues in the standard paradigm of $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) theory. However, under the assumption of conventional spherical symmetry, the strong degeneracy among model parameters makes it unclear whether dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies indeed have cored dark matter density profiles at the centers. In this work, we revisit this problem using non-spherical mass models, which have the advantage of being able to alleviate the degeneracy. Applying our mass models to the currently available kinematic data of the eight classical dSphs, we find t…
We present the metallicities and carbon abundances of four newly discovered metal-poor stars with $ -2.2 <$ [Fe/H] $< -1.6$ in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These stars were selected as metal-poor member candidates using a combination of public photometry from the SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey and proper motion data from the second data release from the Gaia mission. The SkyMapper filters include a metallicity-sensitive narrow-band $v$ filter centered on the Ca II K line, which we use to identify metal-poor candidates. In tandem, we use proper motion data to remove metal-poor stars …
Aim: We establish the mean metallicity from high-resolution spectroscopy for the recently found dwarf spheroidal galaxy Bootes I and test whether it is a common feature for ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies to show signs of inhomogeneous chemical evolution (e.g. as found in the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy). Methods: We analyse high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise spectra for seven red giant stars in the Bootes I dSph galaxy using standard abundance analysis techniques. In particular, we assume local thermodynamic equilibrium and employ spherical model atmospheres and codes that t…
We forecast parameter uncertainties on the mass profile of a typical Milky Way dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy using the spherical Jeans Equation and Fisher matrix formalism. We show that radial velocity measurements for 1000 individual stars can constrain the mass contained within the effective radius of a dSph to within 5%. This is consistent with constraints extracted from current observational data. We demonstrate that a minimum sample of 100,000 (10,000) stars with both radial and proper motions measurements is required to distinguish between a cusped or cored inner slope at the 2-sigma (1…
I review the current status of dynamical modelling of dwarf spheroidal galaxies focusing on estimates of their dark matter content. Starting with the simplest methods using the velocity dispersion profiles I discuss the inherent issues of mass-anisotropy degeneracy and contamination by unbound stars. I then move on to methods of increasing complexity, aiming to break the degeneracy, up to recent applications of the Schwarzschild orbit superposition method. The dynamical modelling is placed in the context of possible scenarios for the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, including the tidal …
The projected virial theorem is applied to the case of multiple stellar populations in the nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies. As each population must reside in the same gravitational potential, this provides strong constraints on the nature of the dark matter halo. We derive necessary conditions for two populations with Plummer or exponential surface brightnesses to reside in a cusped Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) halo. We apply our methods to the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal, and show that there is no NFW halo compatible with the energetics of the two populations. The dark halo must possess a core ra…
We report the discovery of two Mira variable stars (Miras) toward the Sextans dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. We performed optical long-term monitoring observations for two red stars in the Sextans dSph. The light curves of both stars in the $I_{\rm c}$ band show large-amplitude (3.7 and 0.9 mag) and long-period ($326\pm 15$ and $122\pm 5$ days) variations, suggesting that they are Miras. We combine our own infrared data with previously published data to estimate the mean infrared magnitudes. The distances obtained from the period-luminosity relation of the Miras ($75.3^{+12.8}_{-10.9}$ and $7…
The inner profile of Dark Matter (DM) halos remains one of the central problems in small-scale cosmology. At present, the problem can not be resolved in dwarf spheroidal galaxies due to a degeneracy between the DM profile and the velocity anisotropy beta of the stellar population. We discuss a method which can break the degeneracy by exploiting 3D positions and 1D line-of-sight (LOS) velocities. With the full 3D spatial information, we can determine precisely what fraction of each stars LOS motion is in the radial and tangential direction. This enables us to infer the anisotropy parameter beta…
We present high-resolution, high-S/N spectra of an extremely metal- poor giant star Boo-1137 in the "ultra-faint" dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) Bootes I (absolute magnitude Mv ~ -6.3). With [Fe/H] = -3.7, this the most metal-poor star yet identified in an ultra-faint dSph. Comparison of relative abundances, [X/Fe], for some 15 elements with those of the extremely metal-poor giants of the Galactic halo shows Boo-1137 is "normal" with respect to C and N, the odd-Z elements Na and Al, the Fe-peak elements, and the n-capture elements Sr and Ba, in comparison with the bulk of the halo with [Fe/H] …
Recent studies found the densities of dark matter (DM) subhaloes which surround nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) to be significantly lower than those of the most massive subhaloes expected around Milky Way sized galaxies in cosmological simulations, the so called "too-big-to-fail" (TBTF) problem. A caveat of previous work has been that dark substructures were assumed to contain steep density cusps in the center of DM haloes even though the central density structure of DM haloes is still under debate. In this study, we re-examine the TBTF problem for models of DM density structure with …
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) orbiting the Milky Way are complex objects often with complicated star formation histories and internal dynamics. In this work, we search for stellar substructures in four of the classical dSph satellites of the Milky Way: Sextans, Carina, Leo I, and Leo II. We apply two methods to search for stellar substructure: the minimum spanning tree method, which helps us to find and quantify spatially connected structures, and the "brute-force" method, which is able to find elongated stellar substructures. We detected the previously known substructure in Sextans, and al…
This paper introduces new phase-space models of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). The stellar component has an isotropic, lowered isothermal (or King) distribution function. A physical basis for the isotropization of stellar velocities is given by tidal stirring, whilst the isothermality of the distribution function guarantees the observed flatness of the velocity dispersion profile in the inner parts. Our models reproduce the data on the half-light radius and line of sight central velocity dispersion of the dSphs. We show that different dark halo profiles -- whether cored or cusped -- lead t…
The Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy contains two distinct stellar populations: one metal-rich and the other metal-poor. Several authors have argued that in order for these two populations to reside in the same gravitational potential, the dark matter halo must have a core similar to that observed in the stellar count profile. This would rule out the cuspy Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) density profiles predicted for halos and subhalos by dark matter only simulations of the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (Lambda-CDM) cosmological model. We present a new theoretical framework to analyse stellar count and v…
We present 947 radial velocities of RR Lyrae variable stars in four fields located toward the Galactic bulge, observed within the data from the ongoing Bulge RR Lyrae Radial Velocity Assay (BRAVA-RR). We show that these RR Lyrae stars exhibit hot kinematics and null or negligible rotation and are therefore members of a separate population from the bar/pseudobulge that currently dominates the mass and luminosity of the inner Galaxy. Our RR Lyrae stars predate these structures, and have metallicities, kinematics, and spatial distribution that are consistent with a "classical" bulge, although we …
Dark-matter halos grown in cosmological simulations appear to have central NFW-like density cusps with mean values of $d\logρ/d\log r \approx -1$, and some dispersion, which is generally parametrized by the varying index $α$ in the Einasto density profile fitting function. Non-universality in profile shapes is also seen in observed galaxy clusters and possibly dwarf galaxies. Here we show that non-universality, at any given mass scale, is an intrinsic property of DARKexp, a theoretically derived model for collisionless self-gravitating systems. We demonstrate that DARKexp - which has only one …
We report ALMA observations of $^{12}$CO(3-2) and $^{13}$CO(3-2) in the gas-poor dwarf galaxy NGC 5253. These 0.3"(5.5 pc) resolution images reveal small, dense molecular gas clouds that are located in kinematically distinct, extended filaments. Some of the filaments appear to be falling into the galaxy and may be fueling its current star formation. The most intense CO(3-2) emission comes from the central $\sim$100 pc region centered on the luminous radio-infrared HII region known as the supernebula. The CO(3-2) clumps within the starburst region are anti-correlated with H$α$ on $\sim$5 pc sca…
We report preliminary results concerning the detailed chemical composition of metal poor stars belonging to close ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (hereafter UfDSphs). The abundances have been determined thanks to spectra obtained with X-Shooter, a high efficiency spectrograph installed on one of the ESO VLT units. The sample of ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal stars have abundance ratios slightly lower to what is measured in field halo star of the same metallicity. We did not find extreme abundances in our Hercules stars as the one found by Koch for his 2 Hercules stars. The synthesis of the neutron cap…
We present abundances for seven stars in the (extremely) low-metallicity tail of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, from spectra taken with X-shooter on the ESO VLT. Targets were selected from the Ca II triplet (CaT) survey of the Dwarf Abundances and Radial Velocities Team (DART) using the latest calibration. Of the seven extremely metal-poor candidates, five stars are confirmed to be extremely metal-poor (i.e., [Fe/H]<-3 dex), with [Fe/H]=-3.47 +/- 0.07 for our most metal-poor star. All are around or below [Fe/H]=-2.5 dex from the measurement of individual Fe lines. These values are in ag…
Using high-resolution spectroscopy, we provide a determination of [Fe/H] and [Ca/H] for confirmed red-giant branch member stars of the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Based on this we explore the ages of the prevailing stellar populations in Hercules, and the enrichment history from supernovae. Additionally, we provide a new simple metallicity calibration for Stromgren photometry for metal-poor, red giant branch stars. We find that the red-giant branch stars of the Hercules dSph galaxy are more metal-poor than estimated in our previous study that was based on photometry alone. Additionally, …
Our knowledge about the chemical evolution of the more luminous dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies is constantly growing. However, little is known about the enrichment of the ultrafaint systems recently discovered in large numbers in large Sky Surveys. Low-resolution spectroscopy and photometric data indicate that these galaxies are predominantly metal-poor. On the other hand, the most recent high-resolution abundance analyses indicate that some of these galaxies experienced highly inhomogenous chemical enrichment, where star formation proceeds locally on the smallest scales. Furthermore, these …
The study of the chemical abundances of metal-poor stars in dwarf galaxies provides a venue to constrain paradigms of chemical enrichment and galaxy formation. Here we present metallicity and carbon abundance measurements of 100 stars in Sculptor from medium-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra taken with the Magellan/Michigan Fiber System mounted on the Magellan-Clay 6.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We identify 24 extremely metal-poor star candidates ([Fe/H] < -3.0) and 21 carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star candidates. Eight carbon-enhanced stars are classified with at least 2$σ$ conf…

We present a Bayesian method to identify multiple (chemodynamic) stellar populations in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) using velocity, metallicity, and positional stellar data without the assumption of spherical symmetry. We apply this method to a new Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of the Ursa Minor (UMi) dSph. We identify 892 likely members, making this the largest UMi sample with line-of-sight velocity and metallicity measurements. Our Bayesian method detects two distinct chemodynamic populations with high significance ($\ln{B}\sim33$). The metal-rich ($[{\rm Fe/H}]=-2.05\pm0.03$) popul…
Numerical simulations within a cold dark matter (DM) cosmology form halos whose density profiles have a steep inner slope (`cusp'), yet observations of galaxies often point towards a flat central `core'. We develop a convolutional mixture density neural network model to derive a probability density function (PDF) of the inner density slopes of DM halos. We train the network on simulated dwarf galaxies from the NIHAO and AURIGA projects, which include both DM cusps and cores: line-of-sight velocities and 2D spatial distributions of their stars are used as inputs to obtain a PDF representing the…
Our knowledge about the dynamics, the chemical abundances and the evolutionary histories of the more luminous dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies is constantly growing. However, very little is known about the enrichment of the ultra-faint systems recently discovered in large numbers in large sky surveys. Current low-resolution spectroscopy and photometric data indicate that these galaxies are highly dark matter dominated and predominantly metal poor. On the other hand, recent high-resolution abundance analyses indicate that some dwarf galaxies experienced highly inhomogenous chemical enrichment, …
We present tentative evidence for the existence of a dissolved star cluster in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy. In a sample of six stars, we identify three (possibly four) stars around [Fe/H] =-2.7 that are highly clustered in a multi-dimensional chemical abundance space. The estimated initial stellar mass of the cluster is M*,init = 1.9^+1.5_-0.9 (1.6^+1.2_-0.8)*10^5 Msol assuming a Salpeter (Kroupa) initial mass function (IMF). If corroborated by follow-up spectroscopy, this ancient star cluster at [Fe/H] =-2.7 is the most metal-poor system identified to date. Inspired by this finding, w…
Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies recently discovered around the Milky Way (MW) contain extremely metal-poor stars, and might represent the building blocks of low-metallicity components of the MW. Among them, the Boötes I dwarf spheroidal galaxy is of particular interest because of its exclusively old stellar population. We determine chemical compositions of six red giant stars in Boötes I, based on the high-resolution spectra obtained with the High Dispersion Spectrograph mounted on the Subaru Telescope. Abundances of 12 elements, including C, Na, alpha, Fe-peak, and neutron capture elements, were d…
The cold dark matter model predicts cuspy dark matter halos. However, it has been found that, in some low-mass galaxies, cored dark halos provide a better description of their internal dynamics. Here we give constraints on the dark halo profile in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy by studying the longevity of two cold kinematic substructures detected in this galaxy. We perform N-body simulations of a stellar clump in the Sextans dwarf galaxy, including a live dark matter halo and the main stellar component. We find that, if the dark halo is cuspy, stellar clumps orbiting with semi-major axis…
We attempt to measure the density of dark matter in the two Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Fornax and Sculptor using a new method which employs Jeans equations based on both the second and fourth moment of the Collisionless Boltzmann Equation (i.e. variance and kurtosis of line of sight stellar velocities). Unlike previous related efforts, we allow the anisotropy of the radial and tangential second and fourth order moments to vary independently of each other. We apply the method to simulated data and establish that to some degree it appears to be able to break the degeneracies associated with secon…
Although true metal-free "Population III" stars have so-far escaped discovery, their nature, and that of their supernovae, is revealed in the chemical products left behind in the next generations of stars. Here we report the detection of an ultra-metal poor star in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, AS0039. With [Fe/H]$_{\rm LTE}=-4.11$, it is the most metal-poor star so far discovered in any external galaxy. Contrary to the majority of Milky Way stars at this metallicity, AS0039 is clearly not enhanced in carbon, with [C/Fe]$_{\rm LTE}=-0.75$ and A(C)=+3.60, making it the lowest detected c…
In recent years the Sloan Digital Sky Survey has unraveled a new population of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) in the vicinity of the Milky Way (MW) whose origin remains a puzzle. Using a suite of collisionless N-body simulations, we investigate the formation of UFDs in the context of the tidal stirring model for the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group (LG). Our simulations are designed to reproduce the tidal interactions between MW-sized host galaxies and rotationally supported dwarfs embedded in 10^9 M_sun dark matter (DM) halos. We explore a variety of inner density …
We generate stellar distribution functions (DFs) in triaxial haloes in order to examine the reliability of slopes $Γ\equiv Δ{\rm log} M / Δ{\rm log} r$ inferred by applying mass estimators of the form $M\propto R_eσ^2$ (i.e. assuming spherical symmetry, where $R_e$ and $σ$ are luminous effective radius and global velocity dispersion, respectively) to two stellar sub-populations independently tracing the same gravitational potential. The DFs take the form $f(E)$, are dynamically stable, and are generated within triaxial potentials corresponding directly to subhaloes formed in cosmological dark-…
We present alpha-element abundances of Mg, Si, and Ti for a large sample of field stars in two outer fields of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), obtained with VLT/GIRAFFE (R~16,000). Due to the large fraction of metal-poor stars in our sample, we are able to follow the alpha-element evolution from [Fe/H]=-2.5 continuously to [Fe/H]=-0.7 dex. For the first time we are able to resolve the turnover from the Type II supernovae (SNe) dominated, alpha-enhanced plateau down to subsolar [alpha/Fe] values due to the onset of SNe Ia, and thus to trace the chemical enrichment efficiency of the g…
Chemical abundances of six extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.5) stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy are determined based on high resolution spectroscopy (R=40,000) with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. (1) The Fe abundances derived from the high resolution spectra are in good agreement with the metallicity estimated from the Ca triplet lines in low resolution spectra. The lack of stars with [Fe/H]=<-3 in Sextans, found by previous estimates from the Ca triplet, is confirmed by our measurements, although we note that high resolution spectroscopy for a larger sample of s…
We use a new mass modelling method, GravSphere, to measure the central dark matter density profile of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Draco's star formation shut down long ago, making it a prime candidate for hosting a 'pristine' dark matter cusp, unaffected by stellar feedback during galaxy formation. We first test GravSphere on a suite of tidally stripped mock 'Draco'-like dwarfs. We show that we are able to correctly infer the dark matter density profile of both cusped and cored mocks within our 95% confidence intervals. While we obtain only a weak inference on the logarithmic slope of t…
We present the radial velocity curve of a single-lined spectroscopic binary in the faint Hercules dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, based on 34 individual spectra covering more than two years of observations. This is the first time that orbital elements could be derived for a binary in a dSph. The system consists of a metal-poor red giant and a low-mass companion, possibly a white dwarf, with a 135-days period in a moderately eccentric ($e=0.18$) orbit. Its period and eccentricity are fully consistent with metal-poor binaries in the Galactic halo, while the projected semimajor axis is small, at …
Metal-poor components of dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way could be remnants of the building blocks of the Galactic halo structure. Low-mass stars that are currently observed as metal-poor stars are expected to have formed in chemically homogeneous clusters in the early phases of galaxy formation. They should have already disintegrated and should exhibit large scatter in abundance ratios of some sets of elements (e.g., Sr/Ba) in the Milky Way field stars. However, chemical abundance ratios are expected to cluster in very metal-poor stars in dwarf galaxies because the number of clusters forme…
Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Carina dSph revealed that this galaxy contains two dominant stellar populations of different age and kinematics. The co-existence of multiple populations provides new constraints on the dark halo structure of the galaxy, because different populations should be in equilibrium in the same dark matter potential well. We develop non-spherical dynamical models including such multiple stellar components and attempt to constrain the properties of the non-spherical dark halo of Carina. We find that Carina probably has a larger and denser dark halo than…
We use N-body simulations to study the effects of tides on the kinematical structure of satellite galaxies orbiting a Milky Way-like potential. Our work is motivated by observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group, for which often a distinction is possible between a cold centrally concentrated metal rich and a hot, extended metal poor population. We find that an important attenuation of the initial differences in the distribution of the two stellar components occurs for orbits with small pericentric radii (r_per < 20 kpc). This is mainly due to: i) the loss of the gravitational…
Many of the scenarios proposed to explain the origin of chemically peculiar stars in globular clusters (GCs) require significant mass-loss ($\ge95\%$) to explain the observed fraction of such stars. In the GCs of the Fornax dwarf galaxy significant mass-loss could be a problem. Larsen et al. (2012) showed that there is a large ratio of GCs to metal-poor field stars in Fornax and about $20-25\%$ of all the stars with ${\rm [Fe/H]}<-2$ belong to the four metal-poor GCs. This imposes an upper limit of $\sim80\%$ mass-loss that could have happened in Fornax GCs. In this paper, we propose a solutio…
The dark matter (DM) content of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy inferred from its kinematics is substantially lower than expected from LCDM cosmological simulations. We use N-body simulations to examine whether this may be the result of Galactic tides. We find that, despite improved proper motions from the Gaia mission, the pericentric distance of Fornax remains poorly constrained, mainly because its largest velocity component is roughly anti-parallel to the solar motion. Translating Fornax's proper motion into a Galactocentric velocity is thus sensitively dependent on Fornax's assumed dist…
We present a comprehensive metallicity analysis of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) using $Pristine\,CaHK$ photometry. We base our member selection on $Gaia$ EDR3 astrometry applying a magnitude limit at $G_{0} = 17.3$, and our population study on the metallicity-sensitive photometry from the $Pristine$ Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS). Working with photometric metallicities instead of spectroscopic metallicities allows us to cover an unprecedented large area ($\sim 100$ square degrees) of the dwarf galaxy, and to study the spatial distribution of its members as function of metalli…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are often conjectured to be the sites of the first stars. The best current contenders for finding the chemical imprints from the enrichment by those massive objects are the "ultrafaint dwarfs" (UFDs). Here we present evidence for remarkably low heavy element abundances in the metal poor Hercules UFD. Combined with other peculiar abundance patterns this indicates that Hercules was likely only influenced by very few, massive explosive events - thus bearing the traces of an early, localized chemical enrichment with only very little other contributions from other sources …
We present a study of short period, central helium-burning variable stars in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy LeoI, including 106 RR Lyrae stars and 51 Cepheids. So far, this is the largest sample of Cepheids and the largest Cepheids to RR Lyrae ratio found in such a kind of galaxy. The comparison with other Local Group dwarf spheroidals, Carina and Fornax, shows that the period distribution of RR Lyrae stars is quite similar, suggesting similar properties of the parent populations, whereas the Cepheid period distribution in LeoI peaks at longer periods (P \sim 1.26d instead of ~0.5d) a…
We present tentative evidence for the existence of a dissolved star cluster at [Fe/H]=-2.7 in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We use the technique of chemical tagging to identify stars that are highly clustered in a multi-dimensional chemical abundance space (C-space). In a sample of six stars, three, possibly four stars are identified as potential cluster stars. The initial stellar mass of the parent cluster is estimated from two independent observations to M*,init=1.9^{+1.5}_{-0.9} (1.6^{+1.2}_{-0.8}) x 10^5 M_sol, assuming a Salpeter (Kroupa) initial mass function (IMF). If corroborate…
We present the results of a low-resolution spectral abundance study of 25 stars in the Bootes I dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. The data were obtained with the LRIS instrument at Keck Observatory, and allow us to measure [Fe/H], [C/Fe], and [alpha/Fe] for each star. We find both a large spread in metallicity (2.1 dex in [Fe/H]) as well as the low average metallicity in this system, <[Fe/H]>=-2.59, matching previous estimates. This sample includes a newly discovered extremely metal-poor star, with [Fe/H]=-3.8, that is one of the most metal-poor stars yet found in a dSph. We compare the metallic…
The origin of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars and their possible connection with the chemical elements produced by the first stellar generation is still highly debated. In contrast to the Galactic halo, not many CEMP stars have been found in the dwarf spheroidal galaxies around the Milky Way. Here we present detailed abundances from ESO VLT/UVES high-resolution spectroscopy for ET0097, the first CEMP star found in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal. This star has $\text{[Fe/H]}=-2.03\pm0.10$, $\text{[C/Fe]}=0.51\pm0.10$ and $\text{[N/Fe]}=1.18\pm0.20$. The traditional definition of CEMP sta…
Aims: We describe our newly developed approach to detailed abundance analysis from integrated-light high-dispersion spectra of star clusters. As a pilot project, we measure abundances of several elements for three globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dSph, using VLT/UVES spectra. Methods: We divide the cluster colour-magnitude diagrams into about 100 bins and compute synthetic spectra for each bin. The individual model spectra are co-added and the abundances are iteratively adjusted until the best match to the observed spectra is achieved. Results: We find [Fe/H] = -2.3, -1.4 and -2.1 for For…
We use VLT/FLAMES intermediate resolution (R~6500) spectra of individual red giant branch stars in the near-infrared CaII triplet (CaT) region to investigate the wide-area metallicity properties and internal kinematics of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). Our final sample consists of 174 probable members of Sextans with accurate line-of-sight velocities (+- 2 km/s) and CaT [Fe/H] measurements (+- 0.2 dex). We use the MgI line at 8806.8 Å\, as an empirical discriminator for distinguishing between probable members of the dSph (giant stars) and probable Galactic contaminants (dwarf star…
The local group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (LG dSphs) are among the most promising astrophysical targets for probing the small scale structure of dark matter (DM) subhalos. We describe a method for testing the correspondence between proposed DM halo models and observations of stellar populations within LG dSphs. By leveraging the gravitational potential of any proposed DM model and the available stellar kinematical data, we can derive a prediction for the observed stellar surface density of an LG dSph that can be directly compared with observations. Because we do not make any reference to an as…
The effect of the local environment on the evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies is poorly understood. We have undertaken a suite of simulations to investigate the tidal impact of the Milky Way on the chemodynamical evolution of dwarf spheroidals that resemble present day classical dwarfs using the SPH code GEAR. After simulating the models through a large parameter space of potential orbits the resulting properties are compared with observations from both a dynamical point of view, but also from the, often neglected, chemical point of view. In general, we find that tidal effects quench the s…
We present a homogeneous chemical abundance analysis of five of the most metal-poor stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We analyze new and archival high resolution spectroscopy from Magellan/MIKE and VLT/UVES and determine stellar parameters and abundances in a consistent way for each star. Two of the stars in our sample, at [Fe/H] = -3.5 and [Fe/H] = -3.8, are new discoveries from our Ca K survey of Sculptor, while the other three were known in the literature. We confirm that Scl 07-50 is the lowest metallicity star identified in an external galaxy, at [Fe/H] = -4.1. The two most m…
