New light species can contribute to the number of effective relativistic degrees of freedom ($N_{\rm eff}$) at Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) which is precisely measured by Planck. In this work, we consider an MeV scale thermally decoupled non-minimal dark sector and study the imprint of the dark sector dynamics on the measurement of $N_{\rm eff}$ at the time of CMB formation. We have predicted the allowed region of model parameter space in the light of constraints arising from the measurements of both $N_{\rm eff}$ and dark matter relic density by Planck. It turns out that the impact of the dark sector dynamics on $N_{\rm eff}$ is significant in case of a non-hierarchical mass spectrum of the dark sector particles.
In this paper we revisit constraints on the leptophilic dark matter (DM) arising from the DM indirect detection experiments. Interactions between the charged leptons and the scalar-type, Dirac-type or vector-type DM are written in terms of effective operators. After classifying all interactions that may give non-zero signals in indirect detections, we study constraints on the parameter space of these effective interactions from the latest results of AMS-02, Planck, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S., as well as the observed relic abundance. Main results are summarized in the Table. I. It shows that the $τ…
We consider the case of very low reheating scenarios ($T_{\rm RH}\sim\mathcal{O}({\rm MeV})$) with a better calculation of the production of the relic neutrino background (with three-flavor oscillations). At 95% confidence level, a lower bound on the reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH}>4.1$ MeV is obtained from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, while $T_{\rm RH}>4.3$ MeV from Planck data for very light ($\sum m_i = 0.06$ eV) neutrinos. If neutrino masses are allowed to vary, Planck data yield $T_{\rm RH}>4.7$ MeV, the most stringent bound on the reheating temperature to date. Neutrino masses as large as…
We show that the type-I seesaw, responsible for generating the light neutrino mass, itself is capable of accommodating one of the three right handed neutrinos as a freeze-in type of dark matter (DM) where the required smallness of the associated coupling is connected to the lightness of the (smallest) active neutrino mass. It turns out that (a) the non-thermal production of DM having mass $\lesssim \mathcal{O}(1)$ MeV (via decays of $W, Z$ bosons and SM Higgs) consistent with relic density as well as (b) its stability determine this smallest active neutrino mass uniquely $\sim {\mathcal{O}}(10…
We investigate constraints on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the mass range 10^{15}-10^{17} g using data from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and MeV extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Hawking radiation from PBHs with lifetime greater than the age of the universe leaves an imprint on the CMB through modification of the ionization history and the damping of CMB anisotropies. Using a model for redshift dependent energy injection efficiencies, we show that a combination of temperature and polarization data from Planck provides the strongest constraint on the abunda…
Upcoming measurements of the highly redshifted 21cm line with next-generation radio telescopes such as HERA and SKA will provide the intriguing opportunity to probe dark matter (DM) physics during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), Cosmic Dawn, and the Dark Ages. With HERA already under construction, there is a pressing need to thoroughly understand the impact of DM physics on the intergalactic medium (IGM) during these epochs. We present first results of a hydrodynamic simulation suite with $2 \times 512^3$ particles in a $(100 \ h^{-1} \ \text{Mpc})^3$ box with DM annihilation and baryonic coo…
If a fraction $f_{\rm dcdm}$ of the Dark Matter decays into invisible and massless particles (so-called "dark radiation") with the decay rate (or inverse lifetime) $Γ_{\rm dcdm}$, such decay will leave distinctive imprints on cosmological observables. With a full consideration of the Boltzmann hierarchy, we calculate the decay-induced impacts not only on the CMB but also on the redshift distortion and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, while providing detailed physical interpretations based on evaluating the evolution of gravitational potential. By using the current cosmological data with …
The next generation of solar neutrino detectors will provide a precision measure of the $^8$B electron-neutrino spectrum in the energy range from 1-15 MeV. Although the neutrino spectrum emitted by $^8$B $β$-decay reactions in the Sun's core is identical to the neutrino spectrum measured in the laboratory, due to vacuum and matter flavor oscillations, this spectrum will be very different from that measured on Earth by the different solar neutrino experiments. We study how the presence of dark matter (DM) in the Sun's core changes the shape of the $^8$B electron-neutrino spectrum. These modific…
A new U(1) gauge symmetry is the simplest extension of the Standard Model and has various theoretical and phenomenological motivations. In this paper, we study the cosmological constraint on the MeV scale dark photon. After the neutrino decoupling era at $T = \mathcal{O}(1)\,$MeV, the decay and annihilation of the dark photon heats up the electron and photon plasma and accordingly decreases the effective number of neutrino $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$ in the recombination era. We derive a conservative lower-limit of the dark photon mass around 8.5 MeV from the current Planck data if the mixing between t…

We examine a framework with light new physics, which couples to the Standard Model only via neutrino mixing. Taking the hints from the short-baseline anomalies seriously and combining them with modern cosmological data and recent IceCube measurements, we obtain surprisingly effective constraints on the hidden force: keV $\lesssim M \lesssim0.3$ GeV for the mediator mass and $g_{h}>10^{-6}-10^{-3}$ for the coupling constant. Flavor equilibration between the hidden and active neutrinos can be delayed until temperatures of $\sim 1$ MeV, but not below $\sim 100$ keV. This scenario can be tested wi…
Identifying signatures of dark matter at indirect-detection experiments is generally more challenging for scenarios involving non-minimal dark sectors such as Dynamical Dark Matter (DDM) than for scenarios involving a single dark particle. This additional difficulty arises because the partitioning of the total dark-matter abundance across an ensemble of different constituent particles with different masses tends to "smear" the injection spectra of photons and other cosmic-ray particles that are produced via dark-matter annihilation or decay. As a result, the imprints of the dark sector on thes…
Neutrinos are expected to freestream (i.e. not interact with anything) since they decouple in the early Universe at a temperature $T\sim 2~{\rm MeV}$. However, there are many relevant particle physics scenarios that can make neutrinos interact at $T< 2~{\rm MeV}$. In this work, we take a global perspective and aim to identify the temperature range in which neutrinos can interact given current cosmological observations. We consider a generic set of rates parametrizing neutrino interactions and by performing a full Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) analysis we find that neutrinos cannot i…
We consider heavy sterile neutrinos $ν_s$, with mass in the range 10 MeV $\lesssim m_s \lesssim m_π \sim 135$ MeV, thermally produced in the early universe and freezing out after the QCD phase transition. The existence of these neutrinos may alter the value of the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$, measured by the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and the ${}^4$He production during the BBN. We provide a detailed account of the solution of the relevant Boltzmann equations and we identify the parameter space constrained by current Planck satellite data and forecast the paramete…

Thermal dark matter at the MeV mass-scale has its abundance set during the highly non-trivial epochs of neutrino decoupling and electron annihilation. The technical obstacles attached to solving Boltzmann equations of multiple interacting sectors being both relativistic and non-relativistic have to-date prevented the full treatment of this problem. Here, for the first time, we calculate the freeze-out of light dark matter, taking into account the energy transfer between the dark sector, neutrinos, and the electromagnetically interacting plasma from annihilation and elastic scattering processes…
Very recently, the LUNA collaboration has reported a new measurement of the $d+p\to {}^{3}\text{He}+γ$ reaction rate, which plays an important role in the prediction of the primordial deuterium abundance at the time of BBN. This new measurement has triggered a new set of global BBN analyses within the context of the Standard Model. In this addendum to JCAP 01 (2020) 004 (arXiv:1910.01649), we consider the implications of these new results for our constraints on MeV-scale dark sectors. Importantly, we find that our bounds in the BBN-only and Planck-only analyses are insensitive to these updates…
We use present cosmological observations and forecasts of future experiments to illustrate the power of large-scale structure (LSS) surveys in probing dark matter (DM) microphysics and unveiling potential deviations from the standard $Λ$CDM scenario. To quantify this statement, we focus on an extension of $Λ$CDM with DM-neutrino scattering, which leaves a distinctive imprint on the angular and matter power spectra. After finding that future CMB experiments (such as COrE+) will not significantly improve the constraints set by the Planck satellite, we show that the next generation of galaxy clus…
About $26\%$ of the matter in our Universe is made up of Dark Matter (DM), which interacts with Standard Model (SM) matter only through gravitational or weak interactions. Many proposals have been made by scientists about the possible candidates of DM - WIMPs, axions, ALPs, black holes etc. And range of its mass could be extremely broad - from Planck scale to as light as $10^{-22}$ eV. Experiments to detect DM are extremely challenging, as DM does not exhibit appreciable interactions with ordinary matter. May be due to such elusive nature, so far it has not been possible to detect DM, though m…
We present the cosmological constraints on the cross section of baryon-dark matter interactions for the dark matter mass below the MeV scale from the Planck CMB (cosmic microwave background) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) Lyman-$α$ forest data. To explore the dark matter mass $m_χ\lesssim 1$ MeV for which the dark matter's free-streaming effect can suppress the observable small scale density fluctuations, in addition to the acoustic oscillation damping in existence of the baryon-dark matter coupling, we apply the approximated treatment of dark matter free-streaming analogous to that of th…
We investigate the possibilities for probing MeV dark matter (DM) particles and primordial black holes (PBHs) (for masses $\sim 10^{15}$--$10^{17}$ g) at the upcoming radio telescope SKA, using photon signals from the Inverse Compton (IC) effect within a galactic halo. Pair-annihilation or decay of MeV DM particles (into $e^+ e^-$ pairs) or Hawking radiation from a population of PBHs generates mildly relativistic $e^{\pm}$ which can lead to radio signals through the IC scattering on low energy cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. We study the ability of SKA to detect such signals coming …
(Abridged) Neutrino interactions beyond the standard model may affect the cosmological evolution and can be constrained through observations. We consider the possibility that neutrinos possess secret scalar or pseudoscalar interactions mediated by the Nambu-Goldstone boson of a still unknown spontaneously broken global $U(1)$ symmetry, as in, e.g. , Majoron models. In such scenarios, neutrinos still decouple at $T\simeq 1$ MeV, but become tightly coupled again ('recouple') at later stages of the cosmological evolution. We use available observations of CMB anisotropies, including Planck 2013 an…

We investigate the allowed range of reheating temperature values in light of the Planck 2015 results and the recent joint analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck experiments, using monomial and binomial inflationary potentials. While the well studied $ϕ^2$ inflationary potential is no longer favored by current CMB data, as well as $ϕ^p$ with $p>2$, a $ϕ^1$ potential and canonical reheating ($w_{re}=0$) provide a good fit to the CMB measurements. In this last case, we find that the Planck 2015 $68\%$ confidence limit upper bound on the spectral i…
