Recently, numerous algorithms have been developed to tackle the problem of light field super-resolution (LFSR), i.e., super-resolving low-resolution light fields to gain high-resolution views. Despite delivering encouraging results, these approaches are all convolution-based, and are naturally weak in global relation modeling of sub-aperture images necessarily to characterize the inherent structure of light fields. In this paper, we put forth a novel formulation built upon Transformers, by treating LFSR as a sequence-to-sequence reconstruction task. In particular, our model regards sub-aperture images of each vertical or horizontal angular view as a sequence, and establishes long-range geometric dependencies within each sequence via a spatial-angular locally-enhanced self-attention layer, which maintains the locality of each sub-aperture image as well. Additionally, to better recover image details, we propose a detail-preserving Transformer (termed as DPT), by leveraging gradient maps of light field to guide the sequence learning. DPT consists of two branches, with each associated with a Transformer for learning from an original or gradient image sequence. The two branches are finally fused to obtain comprehensive feature representations for reconstruction. Evaluations are conducted on a number of light field datasets, including real-world scenes and synthetic data. The proposed method achieves superior performance comparing with other state-of-the-art schemes. Our code is publicly available at: https://github.com/BITszwang/DPT.

Recent transformer-based super-resolution (SR) methods have achieved promising results against conventional CNN-based methods. However, these approaches suffer from essential shortsightedness created by only utilizing the standard self-attention-based reasoning. In this paper, we introduce an effective hybrid SR network to aggregate enriched features, including local features from CNNs and long-range multi-scale dependencies captured by transformers. Specifically, our network comprises transformer and convolutional branches, which synergetically complement each representation during the restor…

Stereo image super-resolution aims to boost the performance of image super-resolution by exploiting the supplementary information provided by binocular systems. Although previous methods have achieved promising results, they did not fully utilize the information of cross-view and intra-view. To further unleash the potential of binocular images, in this letter, we propose a novel Transformerbased parallax fusion module called Parallax Fusion Transformer (PFT). PFT employs a Cross-view Fusion Transformer (CVFT) to utilize cross-view information and an Intra-view Refinement Transformer (IVRT) for…

Single image super-resolution (SISR) has witnessed great strides with the development of deep learning. However, most existing studies focus on building more complex networks with a massive number of layers. Recently, more and more researchers start to explore the application of Transformer in computer vision tasks. However, the heavy computational cost and high GPU memory occupation of the vision Transformer cannot be ignored. In this paper, we propose a novel Efficient Super-Resolution Transformer (ESRT) for SISR. ESRT is a hybrid model, which consists of a Lightweight CNN Backbone (LCB) and…
In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving image classification method that is based on the combined use of encrypted images and the vision transformer (ViT). The proposed method allows us not only to apply images without visual information to ViT models for both training and testing but to also maintain a high classification accuracy. ViT utilizes patch embedding and position embedding for image patches, so this architecture is shown to reduce the influence of block-wise image transformation. In an experiment, the proposed method for privacy-preserving image classification is demonstrated…
State of the art magnetic resonance (MR) image super-resolution methods (ISR) using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) leverage limited contextual information due to the limited spatial coverage of CNNs. Vision transformers (ViT) learn better global context that is helpful in generating superior quality HR images. We combine local information of CNNs and global information from ViTs for image super resolution and output super resolved images that have superior quality than those produced by state of the art methods. We include extra constraints through multiple novel loss functions that pres…
In recent years, privacy-preserving methods for deep learning have become an urgent problem. Accordingly, we propose the combined use of federated learning (FL) and encrypted images for privacy-preserving image classification under the use of the vision transformer (ViT). The proposed method allows us not only to train models over multiple participants without directly sharing their raw data but to also protect the privacy of test (query) images for the first time. In addition, it can also maintain the same accuracy as normally trained models. In an experiment, the proposed method was demonstr…

Lack of audio-video synchronization is a common problem during television broadcasts and video conferencing, leading to an unsatisfactory viewing experience. A widely accepted paradigm is to create an error detection mechanism that identifies the cases when audio is leading or lagging. We propose ModEFormer, which independently extracts audio and video embeddings using modality-specific transformers. Different from the other transformer-based approaches, ModEFormer preserves the modality of the input streams which allows us to use a larger batch size with more negative audio samples for contra…

Image retrieval systems help users to browse and search among extensive images in real-time. With the rise of cloud computing, retrieval tasks are usually outsourced to cloud servers. However, the cloud scenario brings a daunting challenge of privacy protection as cloud servers cannot be fully trusted. To this end, image-encryption-based privacy-preserving image retrieval schemes have been developed, which first extract features from cipher-images, and then build retrieval models based on these features. Yet, most existing approaches extract shallow features and design trivial retrieval models…

In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving image classification method that uses encrypted images and an isotropic network such as the vision transformer. The proposed method allows us not only to apply images without visual information to deep neural networks (DNNs) for both training and testing but also to maintain a high classification accuracy. In addition, compressible encrypted images, called encryption-then-compression (EtC) images, can be used for both training and testing without any adaptation network. Previously, to classify EtC images, an adaptation network was required before …
We present THUNDR, a transformer-based deep neural network methodology to reconstruct the 3d pose and shape of people, given monocular RGB images. Key to our methodology is an intermediate 3d marker representation, where we aim to combine the predictive power of model-free-output architectures and the regularizing, anthropometrically-preserving properties of a statistical human surface model like GHUM -- a recently introduced, expressive full body statistical 3d human model, trained end-to-end. Our novel transformer-based prediction pipeline can focus on image regions relevant to the task, sup…
In this paper we propose augmenting Vision Transformer models with learnable memory tokens. Our approach allows the model to adapt to new tasks, using few parameters, while optionally preserving its capabilities on previously learned tasks. At each layer we introduce a set of learnable embedding vectors that provide contextual information useful for specific datasets. We call these "memory tokens". We show that augmenting a model with just a handful of such tokens per layer significantly improves accuracy when compared to conventional head-only fine-tuning, and performs only slightly below the…

Transformers are successfully applied to computer vision due to their powerful modeling capacity with self-attention. However, the excellent performance of transformers heavily depends on enormous training images. Thus, a data-efficient transformer solution is urgently needed. In this work, we propose an early knowledge distillation framework, which is termed as DearKD, to improve the data efficiency required by transformers. Our DearKD is a two-stage framework that first distills the inductive biases from the early intermediate layers of a CNN and then gives the transformer full play by train…

Self-supervised pre-training and transformer-based networks have significantly improved the performance of object detection. However, most of the current self-supervised object detection methods are built on convolutional-based architectures. We believe that the transformers' sequence characteristics should be considered when designing a transformer-based self-supervised method for the object detection task. To this end, we propose SeqCo-DETR, a novel Sequence Consistency-based self-supervised method for object DEtection with TRansformers. SeqCo-DETR defines a simple but effective pretext by m…

Vision transformers require a huge amount of labeled data to outperform convolutional neural networks. However, labeling a huge dataset is a very expensive process. Self-supervised learning techniques alleviate this problem by learning features similar to supervised learning in an unsupervised way. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised technique PatchRot that is crafted for vision transformers. PatchRot rotates images and image patches and trains the network to predict the rotation angles. The network learns to extract both global and local features from an image. Our extensive experimen…
With the popularity of Transformer architectures in computer vision, the research focus has shifted towards developing computationally efficient designs. Window-based local attention is one of the major techniques being adopted in recent works. These methods begin with very small patch size and small embedding dimensions and then perform strided convolution (patch merging) in order to reduce the feature map size and increase embedding dimensions, hence, forming a pyramidal Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) like design. In this work, we investigate local and global information modelling in tra…

Recently, vision transformer (ViT) has started to outpace the conventional CNN in computer vision tasks. Considering privacy-preserving distributed learning with ViT, federated learning (FL) communicates models, which becomes ill-suited due to ViT' s large model size and computing costs. Split learning (SL) detours this by communicating smashed data at a cut-layer, yet suffers from data privacy leakage and large communication costs caused by high similarity between ViT' s smashed data and input data. Motivated by this problem, we propose DP-CutMixSL, a differentially private (DP) SL framework …

It is critical to obtain high resolution features with long range dependency for dense prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation. To generate high-resolution output of size $H\times W$ from a low-resolution feature map of size $h\times w$ ($hw\ll HW$), a naive dense transformer incurs an intractable complexity of $\mathcal{O}(hwHW)$, limiting its application on high-resolution dense prediction. We propose a Dual-Flattening Transformer (DFlatFormer) to enable high-resolution output by reducing complexity to $\mathcal{O}(hw(H+W))$ that is multiple orders of magnitude smaller than the naive …

The follow-up research adapted similar methods like masked image modeling in vision transformer and demonstrated improvements in the image classification task. Such simple self-supervised methods are not exhaustively studied for object detection transformers (DETR, Deformable DETR) as their transformer encoder modules take input in the convolutional neural network (CNN) extracted feature space rather t…
